Use with caution in small dogs. It is not a perfect drug with minimal effects as the company tauts. They have not mentioned the effects we witnessed in the trial ie; pale, collapse, low BP, death.

My mini dachshund/ aust silkie mix has small tumor between pads on bottom of foot. Can't do surgery because of location and couldn't get margin. So it is Stelfanta or amputation. We have to travel 70 miles for the shot. I have asked several ladies cal vet offices to kind of be there for us if needed and in case we need something like a med etc and might not be able to travel ,70 miles sometimes. Each place said they have no experience on this and would not want to get involved. Seriously!! We are in our late 70 s and doing our best. So worried. Will hBe to kind of live separately because of our second dog. But also worried about the open wound...taking him out if it's raining etc etc. trying to remain strong and calm for our Chewie but it; s difficult

This is amazing. My 4 year old Frenchie was just diagnosed with Mast Cell Cancer on his paw. We are biopsying next week to see what grade he is. Praying Stelfonta will be an option for him. Otherwise, we'll have to amputate his leg which is concerning because he had slipped disc back surgery last year so we are worried how his back would hold up without two hind legs.

My 9 yo male Boston Terrier has gone through a Stefonta treatment twice on two separate tumors in just over a year's time on two different legs. He also had two tumors successfully surgically removed from his torso last year. He's currently 11 days post treatment and seems to be improving. His wound, on his upper front right leg, is currently healing, but he wasn't doing so well a few days ago. He wouldn't eat, his wound was infected, and he was weak and lethargic for a few days. If you experience this, go to your vet immediately. They can handle this situation and my dog was so much better within 24 hours after a vet visit and is nearly back to himself once they treated his side effects (nausea, localized infection, pain). The Stelfonta treatment can be a tough road, but the drug really works. I expect him to be running around again in a week. By the way, his first Stefonta treatment was without any bad side side effects and he was completely healed in 3 weeks, though he did have an ugly wound for a week or so. That tumor was less than half the size of the current one, so that may be a reason for his current problem.

The advances in vet medicine are exciting. Im thrilled my Pitt bull is a candidate, however she sometimes sounds like she having difficulty breathing so I won’t get my hopes up too much till I confirm. Hers is on the side of her paw . It’s painful for her when she walks. I’m keeping her on the histamine blockers till we can return for stelfonta. Thanks for the explanation and case examples. I can make a more informed decision.

Such exciting news! We just signed up a dog from our Boxer Rescue to the trial in Australia. I have a few questions, if you have a minute: 1. At this stage in time Stelfonta is only used for MCT, do you know if there are studies about other tumours? 2. I believe it can only injected in solid tumours, is that correct? 3. Is there a disadvantage in sedating a dog for the injection? Thank you again, looking forward to your answers :-)

My dog had this treatment a couple months ago. Two different tumors. One in shoulder area, one in hind leg. Both have dissolved completely! She was in very little pain, did limp a little first couple of days. But, the wound healed up really faster than I thought it would and she is diabetic. I highly recommend Stelfonta injections.

Why can’t we use the Pet Tumor Tracker app in the US?! Our three dogs have had so many lumps mapped by our vet but we’re spending extra time, worry, and money bringing them in extra times because we can’t recall which lumps have been mapped and deemed skin tags or cysts, and which are new lumps needing to be checked out. There are so many we can’t keep track and we NEED this app!

Thank you for this information, very helpful. I have an 11 year old pug who has had 6 mast cell tumours and seems to just keep growing new ones. He has had 5 surgeries in the last year alone, and each one has me more nervous than the last. He is otherwise in good health but given his age, breed and inclination to continue to get small grade 1 tumours, I am keen to know whether he is a good candidate for Stelfonta..

Hello, i am a vet student and thank you for your excellent videos. I am looking forward to learn more from your contents. I am working in a clinic besides my school. We have a French bulldog patient who has a mast cell tumor at behind in his tarsal joint. Acording to results, it is grade 2. The size of it approximately near what you have said it should be. Actually we didn't know about Stelfonta. The tumor has been removed as surgically. The area is really hard and it is not healing easily. In this case, what should we do? Thank you very much!

Dear Dr. Sue I’m a subscriber of your RU-vid channel from South Korea. I saw your video about the “STELFONTA therapy”. Actually, my dog was diagnosed with mast cell tumors inside the mouth. The first symptom was nose swelling, especially right side. Although it got well after medical treatment, we took a Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy because there was something rising inside the nose. The doctor said that mast cell tumor inside the mouth is a quite rare case and he doesn’t recommend surgery because too broad regions including teeth should be removed to completely remove tumors. Furthermore, cancer therapy (I guess drug treatment) is essential even if he could do surgery for my dog. So, he said that the surgery would make the quality of life diminish. Along the way, I found only one hospital that provides STELFONTA therapy in South Korea. I think it’s my last hope. So, I was wondering if you could give me some information or advice about this therapy. 1. What do you think about thie doctor's opinioon? If you agree that the surgery is not recommended, what do you think of the STELFONTA therapy? Is there any possibility to cure completely? 2. Have you ever tried this therapy for the same case (same region, mouth) with my dog? If so, could you let me know the prognosis? 3. What could be possibly happened as a side-effect or aftereffect when my dog gets this therapy? I guess that loss of smell and loss of teeth would be. 4. Is it okay if the STELFONTA is injected into a weak mucous membrane like inside the mouth? Thank you for reading this long reply. It would really be appreciated and helpful if you send any response to this. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Yeo-Hyun Hwang

Hello Dr Sue ✌️ I hope you can help me with a problem with my dog Bigfoot. He is a pit bull mixed and he will be 14 years old Monday..he has cancer and over a year I don't know what kind it is because my vet said it was too advanced to treat he has a tumor in his neck it was on one side and now since April it's grown around his neck like a horseshoe but so far it's not affected him eating and drinking and swallowing etc. he also has one in his right testicle that never descended down but anyway what happened about two months ago he was having trouble walking in his hind legs they would just shake like parkinson's disease and they did that for probably a year and One day he just couldn't get up to walk and I took him to the doctor and she said that he had a pinched nerve in his back well he kept trying his best to walk and he did get back on his feet off and on and then he lost his mobility and couldn't walk and I got him a harness and that helps him for a while and about a month ago he bloated up so big and fast my vet said to give him gas x pills and I did and it relieved it in a few minutes but ever since then he bloats up every time he eats and now he has pneumonia again for the second time after just getting over it he lost about forty pounds from not eating for five days and I kept him going with pedialyte and chicken broth and finally he started eating again and not even a week he got it again and my vet said that she doesn't know what is causing it that it could be a number of things and I asked my youtube vet from our pets health Dr Alex avery and he said that he would keep getting aspiration pneumonia again and again till the problem was fixed but he didn't know what is going on with him he too said that it can be a number of things.. have you ever encountered this problem before? Lord knows I need help with him to try to solve the problem... he is on prednisolone again and he is on gabapentin three hundred mg four times a day and she said for me to increase the dose. He is on tramadol 50 mg pills twelve pills a day and he is on fouresmide two and a half tablets every 8 hours and he takes 250 mg pills at once time.. he is also on probiotics vetri-mega and cetrizine 20 mg.. he is currently on cephalexin 1500 mg twice a day and ciprofloxican 1250 mg once a day... he is in bad shape but he still is happy for the most part I hate to give him up I know that his age has got him if nothing else but if I could get help him the bloating I would be happy.. do you have any suggestions?

For 1cm masses on legs, how wide (diameter) is the injection area? Would the wound be limited to a small area? Also, the surgeon said that, if we were to perform surgery instead, they would "scrape the muscle" at the same time to ensure now mast cells are on it. Does Stelfonta address these "rogue cells" that are nearby?

Note .some are saying it is just an injection. Well it is not just an injection. The injection is done in a fan type diagram. About 12 different directions. So I am doubtful the dig would respond like any other injection or aspiration. They are turning the needle about 12 different directions. Wow that is scary.

I'm in the UK. Back in Sept 2020, I noticed a golf ball size lump on my dog's [mini Schnauzer] leg that appeared over 2-3 days. [Locum] Vet took samples and came back with advanced, aggressive, malignant MCT. Booked her in for surgery and the day I turned up my own vet was back.She said she wasn't in favour of surgery as the margins would have to be large and where it was she may well not heal. She would likely end up lame, and if the prognosis was bad, not a great way to spend last few months of life. I agreed. She mentioned Stelfonta which had been approved 6 months earlier and available for about 2. She could only find details of 3 dogs in the UK that had the treatment, and although it was early days but they were all on the mend. We started treatment in October 2020. There was a lot of drugs to give in addition, the steroids, anti-histamines, strong pain killers, anti sickness and anti-dizziness pills. Up to 15 pills a day at 8 different intervals. I wrote out a schedule and kept track. The tumour dropped off and left an open wound which certainly got attention during walks! The pain and sickness lasted a few days, but then she started to pick up and healing was quick. By November 2020 we were pretty much all done. Scans and tests showed that she was clear (Locally, lymph, liver, spleen etc) The overall cost was comparable to surgery (I'm sure increased availability will push the price down some), the bad parts lasted a week, and overall were manageable. Much better than a lame dog, and margins that didn't catch it all. My girl is doing fine, still chasing squirrels, smelly as ever, a little bald patch where the tumour was is all. When I think of how it could have been! I thik myself lucky I had a vet that kept up with current research and treatments etc. I definitely advocate this drug if the vet says it is an option!

Don't be fooled. While we are only 5 days post dosing with Stelfonta, it has been rough. Our dog, Dixie, was treated with Stelfonta and the 7 things they DON'T tell you are that: 1. Your dog will be in pain and crying for 48-72 hours 2. Your dog won't eat and you can't get the pain meds in them for about 48 hours 3. The dog is miserable for at least the first 5 days. 4. Your dog will have a dripping wound starting at 24 hours post dose 5. You may think they only have one tumor, but Stelfonta will attack the tumor(s) locally - for us, it's more like 5-6 wounds. 6. The wound smells like rotting flesh for a few days 7. The option to do nothing may be the kindest thing for them. My opinion: you should think long and hard on whether this is beneficial and if you (and your family) are willing to support your dog through this very difficult treatment. I hope it's worth it.
@angelmission
@angelmission Год назад
I didn't experience all of that with my dog. She didn't cry at all. She did limp the first day or two. Her appetite was even better than ever because of the steroids she was given prior. My dog was not miserable. Yes, the wound is a weepy one and kind of nasty. This only treats the tumor it is injected into. The wound can be smelly. I don't agree. Doing nothing will end in a horrible, much more painful death. I know first hand. I highly suggest this treatment if the tumor is small and in a treatable area. HIGHLY Recommend!

@@angelmission Hi, Angela. We are considering Stelfonta instead of surgery on our pups leg. Two 1cm masses. Surgery would require 2cm margins (or 5cm diameter total), which is not easy on legs. Where was your dog's injection done?

Hi. My baby little foxie has stelfonta treatment. It didn’t work made the tumour angry and worse I don’t think it’s that good for a small dog. Vet said would kill the tumour but it didn’t Have spent 6k but I can’t win throwing money at it and will just give him lots of love now vet said they can’t operate anymore 😞 I’m shattered. I don’t trust all these vaccinations anymore Dogs so much better than humans

After using Striving a in Veterinary Oncology, I would never use it again nor work for a hospital that does. In small dogs I've had a dog turn white and we almost lost her initially, she suffered ally of pain and needed the leg amputated. Never never never would I recommended this in small dogs. The only ones I've seen do ok is large dogs.

Hi. This evening my dog's vet let me know that a small mass on/near one of her nipples is, unfortunately, a mast cell tumor (the vet aspirated it a couple of days ago). She is a Pit/Boxer mix (I guess that puts her at high risk for the tumor), and will be 6 in a few months, and she is otherwise really healthy, with a major appetite and lots of energy. I just wanted to clarify something you said here--is surgery still considered the best way to proceed when a tumor is not on something like a leg, paw, or ear? I'd prefer that she avoid the trauma of surgery (she is a rescue dog who still gets nervous in unfamiliar surroundings if I'm not with her), if possible, but obviously I want to find the course of treatment that is most likely to work.

@@SmoothBassVO Hi. We opted for the surgery (Stelfonta was sounding more and more like snake oil!). It was traumatizing for both my dog AND me (I cried like a baby when I dropped her off for the surgery), but it seems that the tumor was removed completely with wide margins, and no other signs of cancer were seen by the vet. She healed up well--although she HATED having to wear a jacket-thing all the time so that she wouldn't lick the incision--and now, a year later, she's completely healed and healthy. Thank you for asking.

The price varies with the size of the tumor, but in general the price is comparable to the cost of surgery with your veterinarian. Best to see a veterinarian for an estimate. Thanks for watching! :)

Why would be surgery be preferred to Stelfonta if the criteria deems the latter treatment appropriate? Seems like an incredibly 'clean' way of removing the tumour. Do you know what the numbers are re dogs being disease free after surgery?

I've done a ton of research on this and I agree with the question. I feel like it's simply because the gold standard treatment has always been surgery. I don't agree with "this is the way we've always done it..." thought process. There's a lot of reasons a pet owner would want to chose Stelfonta over surgery (which often has to be coupled with radiation and/or chemo.) vet-us.virbac.com/stelfonta: STELFONTA® removes 75% of canine Mast Cell Tumors with a single treatment* 75% COMPLETE RESPONSE 87% of dogs had a complete response* after either one or two treatments combined** * Complete response was defined as complete removal of the tumor. ** Results from pivotal field efficacy study: 68/78 dogs achieved a complete response at 28 days after one or two treatments of STELFONTA®. 89% of dogs disease-free* at 12 months

@@l.p.9568 Thanks Lisa P. for your kind replies. There's talk of degranulation with stelfonta treatment but surely thats likely to be a risk with surgery as well, and there is no way surgery is going to be as 'clean' in terms of excising tumours. By the way we are a bunch of Aussies who are long term investors in Qbiotics, who discovered isolated, and trialed Tigilanol Tiglate (TT)/ Stelfonta and are trying to monitor its progress. There are several vet and human trials in progress, and Stelfonta is the first of many applications approved for TT.

@@rogerparker4468 My lengthy reply to you was lost somehow. :( But basically, I agree with all you said. Curious if you know: why hasn't it been approved in Oz but has in Europe/U.S.? And my oncologist is just nervous about Stelf. until more trials have been done so she's sticking with the "tried and true" surgery method but that just isn't a good solution for many situations. I have 2 littermates, one with confirmed MCT and potentially more down the road, and the other with similar DNA could be prone to them too so following the "tried and true" method is not going to be viable for me should more MCTs rear their ugly heads.

@@l.p.9568 Wow, 'nervous', really? Despite the huge trial results and thousands of treatments to date in Europe and now the US as reported by Virbac. Maybe need to change vets. Amazingly the reason why stelfonta is not available in Australia is solely due to the Australian regulatory body. It moves with molasses like speed. Though Qbiotics have assured shareholders stelfonta is at late stage approval. Maybe later this year? Its a scandal really. Regards
