I'm thinking about starting my own grand tour. I have a couple of orange cones and a stopwatch. Race starts at 9pm in the alley behind my shed. I'm not sure where it finishes though.

For the finishing part, place a well constructed finishing arch at the end of the muddiest road you can find, take a shovel and remove some strips of varying sizes of mud from it, just to make it perfectly ununiform. Place some more arches displaying the distance to the finishing arch, which you already made sure was impossible to reach safely due to the ununiform mud. Then all you have to do is place to cones somewhere close, but not to close to the finish, just when you can see the riders approaching your muddy road. Don't bother communicating that the finish line is moved, only for some riders, because nobody's gonna fcking understand anyway, you might as well send post-pidgeons or something. Then ask the mother of the third cousin of your least memorable elementary school classmate to wait at the cones with a stoppwatch and a clipboard to write down all 150+ riders with their respective time individually. Most importantly, it mustn't be visible, that the cones are the actual the finish line, take all precautions to hide that.

So let me get this straight: there were two *different* finishing locations for various groups - cones laid out and a lady with a time sheet and stop watch - and this was decided in an impromptu fashion *during* the stage? Umm…what? Tell me I missed something 🤞 because that seems preposterous to me

The Vuelta organization has just been appalling in my opinion. It's not that it would be an outrageous issue, but whenever a smaller race has substandard barriers, issues with routes/management or any other small problem, there are strong cries that the race should be boycotted, reviewed by the UCI, stopped and the race directors be prosecuted. Double standards give Vuelta the dubious "right" to be unacceptably organized. There is quite a bit of talk online about all this, but come on, we get rider protests for way less, announcers aren't even willing to denounce how shit this Vuelta has been in terms or organization and safety.

Let's be clear here. Changes of the finish location can happen even during the stage. It happened even at the tour 2019 (?) so thats not the controversy here. However having two different finish locations absolutely is. Like what wouldve happened if Kämna crashed in between those locations? Would he be first on the time sheet yet 2nd for the stage? Also how can the route be unsafe to fight for gc yet safe enough to fight for the stage win? Just moving the finish to a single location wouldve been much better and the only reason it wasn't done that way is because TV setups at the original location. That is why vuelta organizers should be criticized. Because they put TV revenue above riders safety multiple times already
@animetributes6996

you keep saying they are suggesting the course is safe for the break and not for GC riders. Thats not what they are saying. The course IS safe. But a break rider risks losing 1 day of racing if the mud ruins them, a GC guy can risk 3 weeks of racing in the mud. They don't want to put GC riders, with so much to lose, in a spot to have a disaster over mud. Having said that, the course looked doable. It appears the organizers are still paying a price for their opening TTT disaster.

Isn't it possible the race organizers are making the time taking location decisions for reasons other than safety, like overall race quality? Not arguing this race has been well organized, because it has not, but wouldnt we all be a hell of a lot more disappointed if a gc guy slipped in the mud at 1.5k and fell out of gc contention than we would be if a non gc breakaway rider did so, even if he lost a potential stage win opportunity? Nobody needs to be saved from an injury for that decision to make sense from an entertainment perspective, which must be one of the primary considerations for the organizers.

@ManWalksDogs
@ManWalksDogs Год назад
that's the first 'week' in inverted commas; all the grand tours start over a weekend (sometimes the fri with a prologue), then have a full mon-sun before the first rest day on the following mon, so then the second 'week' has six race days, the second rest day the mon after then the third 'week' has six again, though five contested & one ceremonial/celebratory run-in with an attached crit & sprint finish. they often have less in that first 'week' if they've loaned out their 'grand depart' to a neighbouring country in europe that then requires a logistical travel day after that opening weekend to get everyone & everything back to the tour's own roads for the remainder of the opening 'week'.
