Your Face Will Change! For Better Or Worse...

The bones in our bodies are much more dynamic than we think, so when it comes to our breathing and mouth posture this is a big deal to me.
People with myofunctional issues are more likely to have longer faces with flatter features. At the same time, they are more likely to have issues like TMJ pain and sleep apnea.
The good thing is, no matter how old you are, it's never too late to make changes to your breathing and tongue posture through myofunctional therapy.
The best time to have the greatest changes to facial structures is in growing children - we can literally guide the growth of their faces by helping them change their habits.
In adults, bone is regenerating and remodeling all the time too. This means that we can also guide these changes - it's just slower and subtler. Still, if you make changes when you are 30 it's better than when you are 40 or 50 years old.

I'm telling ya'll.. this works. I have an asymmetrical face. One side is more developed than the other. Of you have the same issue, chew with the other side of your mouth, keep mewing and do facial exercises. It's been 4 months and my face is starting to even out and I haven't had any health problems ever since. Put your tongue up the roof of your mouth, teeth not touching, close your lips, and breath through your nose.

I’m 14 and I’ve been mouth breathing for a few years. I recently noticed the changes in my face. I looked at other pictures of people who mouth breath and I feel like I look like them from the side profile. If I change my habits now will the changes in my face go away or will they stay there?? And how long will it take for me to see results? edit: it’s only been 3 months and I’m already seeing some good results! My whole face just looks way better! Edit again: I am now 16! and i can honestly say that i’m pretty happy with the way i look now. ever since learning about mewing i’ve always tried to do it throughout the day as well as making sure i’m breathing correctly. and the changes were slow but they make quite difference in the way i look. especially around the chin area ive always been a little insecure but since i learned about all this stuff it’s helped. my jaw and chin area is more prominent compared to before and i know that i still have a long way to go :)

erin at 14 you can DEFINITELY make the changes. It'll be a slow progression but you're still developing and you're really young so with years of consistency, I'd be willing to bet that by 18 (which will come faster than you think) you'd be much better off than you would otherwise, and by your mid-20's you're golden 🙌🏾 it's like the woman in the video said, the problems and symptoms get worse over time so we may as well do what we can to change it for the good rather than allow the damage to continue.

I know this works, I was searching for something else and something popped up about nasal breathing, I found it fascinating and did more research. I started doing it 24/7, fortunately I had no trouble doing this, I know this is a strange thing to mention but when it happened to me I took nasal breathing very seriously, I have always been a nose picker, with 24 hours I stopped because my nose was completely clear, their was nothing to pick, next I was having difficulty getting in and out of my car, very soon this went away also if I had to get on my knees to pick something up I had to grab something to help me get up, not any more I just bend over and pick it up, my posture is now extremely good, I sleep like a log, when walking up hill its a lot easier, I'm not stopping to get my breath, their is lots more but I think you get the gist, just to prove its never too late I'm 77. and of course it good for your well being, sadly I tried to tell my younger brother about this, he just stared at me and said don't be stupid everybody breaths through their mouth, he has bad posture, a terrible temper and other issues/

Hi Sarah, this something that is never mentioned on Nasal Breathing Benefits, it worked for me and I'm in my 70's I am a band leader and often people would say that I was not speaking very clearly, one woman even offered me elocution lessons! it never happens now my diction is good, also I don't speak as fast, my closet friend says my speaking is much clearer, I put this down to nasal breathing and tongue thrust.

However, whenever I fall asleep, my mouth opens. So I was wondering if you have any tips on how to keep proper tongue positioning at night when I am no longer consciously placing my tongue on my palate.

Hey Sarah, question. I’ve always been a mouth breather because of a moderate deviated septum and have only recently learned to adapt and breathe through my nose after seeing your video. I have noticed improvements! However, I’ve noticed that the lower half of my face is slightly longer than average, from what I’m guessing is a result of my mouth breathing. As I’m only 18, is this something that will become more proportionate to the rest of my face over time as I continue to nose breathe? Thanks

I’ve been doing this since I had bioblocs and invisalign. Luckily I only started mouth breathing in my early teens (when I was 10 my teeth were perfectly straight, but by 13 were crooked) so it wasn’t so set. I have a question though- I’m planning to get a nose job. My surgeon is an ENT so breathing issues are far less likely but they are still a concern, and nasal breathing has helped me considerably. Should I talk to my surgeon about this? And what can I do to prevent relapse during the healing process when the nose with inevitably be blocked with blood etc?

Hi Sarah, I think i don't get the probably most important thing. --> Where the TIP of the tongue should be, when at rest and when we swallow? Should the tip of the tongue be on the incisive papilla, or behind that, on the palatine ruggae? I'm trying to correct my tongue position by myself with pretty good results because i think that i'm good to subliminally remember where my tongue should be, and my breath (and other stuff like posture and relaxing) is MUCH better since i'm doing that (keeping the tongue on the palate) BUT my main problem is the fact that i can't understand if the tongue should "finish" at the incisive papilla ( the "n" spot is "the spot" ? ) or if behind that, with the tip of the tongue resting "into" the palatine ruggae ? So basically my question is : where is the spot? On the incisive papilla or palatine ruggae?

I am in the same situation as you. I do think they do have some detrimental effects in the shape of the face, according to Dr Mike Mew, but nevertheless it's good to practice myofunctional therapy so you get the habit when you take them out finally. Also, breathing through your nose has many benefits apart from making you look better :)

I'm really just trying to figure this out. I noticed that while meditating I'd have increased gas and burping. But if I placed my tongue differently that would go away. Through putting tongue positioning and breathing in the search bar I became aware of mewing. I'm continuing to learn as I go. Who would have thought tongue placement was this important though? But it's extremely important.

Okay, but see I have allergies nearly every day so I can't really breathe through my nose.....allergy medicine only helps for a a little while. Or will this all just change with puberty? I am currently 16.

Hi Sarah. I used to breathe mostly through the mouth (my adenoids where taken when I was 7 because I always had a blocked nose but I guess the habit persisted...) and I ended with a very long face (my parents have normal faces as well as my other family members). Now im going for surgery to correct it. Can I still benefit from correcting tongue position and breathe through the nose? Will it help my face to look shorter and with more forward growth? Thank you.

depends how old you are, if you're over 25 your bone isn't that malleable anymore. if you have very good nutrition and exercise daily (keeping you always in anabolic state) then yes you will see changes, but it will take many years.

My face is asymmetrical I’m 45 I don’t like the changes because I lost fat in my face and it’s more noticeable. I wonder if it’s too late for me. I noticed that my thong was resting in the bottom of my mouth because of the marks of my teeth.

My bottom line question is should the tip of the tongue be on the rough of your mouth 24/7 or is it only while eating. I'm 15 about to be 16 and i have a jawline that goes downward, so I'd like to begin better tongue posture now so in a year or two I can see beautiful results. Please get back to me asap!!!!

@shaistalodhi2362
@shaistalodhi2362 5 лет назад
you should place your entire tongue against the roof of your mouth not just the tip. start by touching the back of your two front teeth with your tongue, then pretend to swallow and close your mouth. you will know if you are doing this right if you feel tension around cheekbones and your chin shouldnt be hanging. you should feel just a little tension but not too much as then you wouldnt be able to hold you tounge there. To answer your question your tounge is supposed to be on the roof of your mouth unless you are talking, eating, drinking. just keep your tounge against the roof of your mouth, lips closed and breath through your nose. it will be hard first few weeks or even month so leave reminders for yourself and youll get used to it and get good results i hope this helps stacy Best of Luck

24 hours. When you are sleeping, when you eat use your tongue to activate the salivary glands and help crush food. When you are awake hold this position as well. Make sure you are also swallowing correctly

I have an asymmetrical face because it's been four years my right side isn't much developed because I don't chew there. It's a failed RCT and I get fillings done. They fall. And I don't chew there it hurts. They're a deep hole that if food got stuck it won't be get out. I'm 21. What should I do?

Hi Sarah, I'm 22 years old and have mouth breathed my whole life. I also have an underbite which I now attribute to the mouth breathing. Unfortunately I had orthodontic work throughout my childhood and teenage years, but they never thought anything of the mouth breathing. Recently I have been practicing nose breathing with my tongue on the roof of my mouth, but this gets exhausting and I can't sleep like this as the force keeps me awake. Do you have any recommendations for keeping the tongue in the roof all night? - Sophie :)

@grandcanyon2 6 лет назад
Sophie Burns mouth breather 26.7 years. Iam now 30 takes effort and practice. I have now practice proper oral posture for 3 years about. Better face better air way. More alert. The hardest part was the first 6 months tears and discomfort, very hard to do without surgery or palate expansion. I've had no surgery or palate expansion.

It took a lot of will power for my to hold that posture. It's been 3 to four months and to my surprise my mouth isn't crooked anymore. I used to struggle holding my mouth properly. I was alway told I was attractive, but I was alway self conscious about holding my mouth a certain way and being seen from the side. I thought my mouth poked out to far and my mouth was noticeably not symmetrical. Luckily it wasn't enough to make me ugly. But since this my mouth sits perfectly. I'm no longer afraid to be seen from the side. I know it's not wishful thinking because I did this for weeks with seemingly no results. 3 to 4 months in and big difference. I'm in my late twenties and I think it's possible idk that because I've been doing things to increase my hgh that I'm seeing quick results. My bones a guess are still growing

Hi Sarah, I make a conscious effort throughout the day to breath through my nose. But it seems that I breath through my mouth during sleep. The only thing that keeps me breathing through my nose during the night is my removable retainer I still wear from my days of having braces. Do you think I should continue to wear that during the night? Ideally I would hope to correct the problem without needing that assistance from the retainer.
@sarahkh12
@sarahkh12 6 лет назад
I don't know whether or not it's your retainer, but it could be that your tongue is not in the correct position? If your tongue rests in the bottom of your mouth, when everything relaxes at night your mouth will open. Not sure if that makes sense! It sounds like you need myofunctional therapy though :)
@sameasnow
@sameasnow 6 лет назад
buy a chin strap on amazon just wear it loosely and it will keep your mouth from falling open
@sarahkh12
@sarahkh12 6 лет назад
You can try using mouth tape - there are several brands out there. However, depending on the shape of your mandible, you may not physically be able to keep your mouth closed at night without the aid of an appliance, tape, etc. If you have a vertically angled mandible (like me!) you will have problems...
@Sourdoughgirl
@Sourdoughgirl 6 лет назад
I also have a retainer after 3.5 years of ortho. My retainer has a piece of plastic that covers the entire roof of my mouth keeping my tongue from making contact with it. It was a hard decision but I end up ditching the retainer because my snoring was getting worse and if I continued on like that I would have full blown sleep apnea. I don't know how much this will affect my teeth but the worse comes to worst, I'd rather having crooked teeth than having to sleep with a CPAC machine.

Sunshine Raccoon it can make you head shorter from the top to bottom, as it brings your jaw to be more horizontal. So yes it can make it shorter. If you have a good maxilla and zygos then I think you can make you face appear wider too :)
