When I was a teen I always thought that Joan Of Arc was the type of music that cool college kids listened to, so I got into it in hopes of being cool like those college kids. Now I'm 28 and I still feel that way, even thought I'm past college, and I know that those cool college kids were just in my teen imagination

This is great. I'm a fan of 10+ years of the kinsellas and friends. But I have to say, the guy who's so disillusioned by Tim's capn jazz lyrics for tokyo and ooh do i love you really matters to me in some way, because ever since Tim revealed he was tripping on mushrooms for the first time in his life when he wrote those lyrics, they don't have any sense of literal meaning. But at the same time they have all the meaning, in another context. It's fucked up. I still sing along to capn jazz on rare days that I wanna hear it and its good shit. Just fucking different, being an adult, thinking of the silliness of youth and their motives. Utopian anarchy headspace... its all surreal and again, yet so close to home on some days. I hope anyone who cares enough to read this can make sense of it Lol.

I saw Joan of Arc in my hometown about 10 years ago. There was about 50 people there and Tim burned a heckling audience member so hard. I wanted to meet him after the show but knew that I’d probably hug him and for too long and that he’d probably not be wild about that. I also got tears in my eyes at 7:07 when he introduces his grandmother and Bluegrassish starts playing…

Out of all the bands that I loved as a teenager, Cap N Jazz are the ONLY band that I still love as much at 40 as I did at 17. They were children when they wrote, performed and recorded these songs, yet their music was so original and important. The way everyone who was into the so called 2nd wave of Emo never called themselves Emo and never identified as Emo. Tim Kinsella who is to 2nd wave Emo as Muddy Waters is to Chicago Blues says he was never Emo or felt or identified his band as Emo. At the time any band that was straying from the Pop Punk model and doing things that were different and original was being called Emo. Bands that sounded nothing alike were all lumped into the same genre. I feel like it was called Emo because nobody knew what to call it and people have a need to put everything into a box. I remember in the late 90s early 2000s the rumors in Chicago were that Tim was a dick. If you asked for specific stories of him being a dick you never heard one. They wouldn't have situations of him being a dick he just had this reputation amongst his fans. I was standing next to him at a show at the Metro, I think it was Tortoise or The Sea and Cake and Joan of Arc had played earlier. It was 20 years ago or so, I wanted to tell him that I loved his music and thank him for making it. However I didn't because I was afraid he would be a dick. Same when he worked at Jynx and Rainbo. Seeing this video I have a feeling that all these rumors about him being a dick are complete bullshit. They're just lies from journalists who hate that he has the balls to make the music he wants and not give a damn about what they think. Shame on me for believing lies that and not thinking for myself. I could have shaken the hand of my musical hero.

Listened to Joan of Arc a bit, but listened to Cap'n Jazz a lot and still do. Anyone who enjoys Kinsella's voice/music can check out Algernon Cadwallader; definitely influenced by Kinsella's music, but similarities are exaggerated. Singing off-key doesn't belong to anyone. It was trippy to learn about the infamous "Virginia". When Banhart describe's Cap'n's sound being tough and vulnerable at once, I doubt he must mean it in the sense of having the strength of character to show vulnerability in music, which hadn't been a thing in a lot of punk up to that point. Even if a band, like Minor Threat, Black Flag, etc, etc, had a song that related to vulnerability, it was toughened-up, which is pretty childish/cowardly. I always figured punk from the midwest, like Capn' Jazz was a reaction to the rising levels of macho bullshit in punk at the time anyway.

Cap'n Jazz / Joan of Arc have both been on my list of bands to check out for the last 20+ years. For whatever reason I just gloss over it every single time. Then a couple days ago I randomly decided to finally take the time to get a feel for them. I gotta say, it wasn't anything close to what I expected. I figured they'd at least bear some sort of resemblance to American Football. Although I do love American Football, I was pleased to find out Cap'n Jazz / Joan of Arc sound nothing like them. However.. the level of pretention here is just through the roof. I get that Tim Kinsella is just wired differently than your typical songwriter, in that sense I greatly appreciate his authenticity to himself. But I just fail to see what Cap'n Jazz / Joan of Arc are actually bringing to the table in terms of creativity or innovation. It feels like Tim is happy to forego quality if it means he can be more prolific. The vast majority of the songs I've checked out seem to have a seed of a good idea, but these ideas are rarely given time to blossom and fully bloom. Everything feels halfway done. Rushed. I realize this is going to be a very unpopular comment. But someone needed to say it.

A year late, but it's got a contact microphone in it (which picks up the vibrations in the object/surface it's affixed to instead of from the air like a normal microphone), which is then sent into effects. So Melina can whack it, scrape it, thump it, sing into it (though that requires putting your face right against the miked object), etc. and it'll make sound. Then it can be warped into crazy chirps and bloops with pedals. It's more of an experimental percussion instrument than a guitar.
