In 1955 Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar returned from a year-long hiatus with a new star and a new format. Bob Bailey took over as Dollar and producer Jack Johnstone moved it to five fifteen-minute episodes a week format. This is probably the best-known and loved incarnation of the show.
We have edited these five-part episodes to feel like a single episode. Videos of beautiful scenery have been added for a unique OTR experience.

What sets Bob Bailey apart from the other actors who played JD is, Bob’s portrayal is not merely reading lines. He infuses certain characteristics throughout the series.
@HearthandHomeEntertainment
@HearthandHomeEntertainment 2 года назад
Also, I think the format of the 15 minutes shows spread out over a week (or if you are tuning in to the show over an hour) vs 30 minutes to set up the story and end it gave him more time to flesh out the character more. All in all, a very enjoyable show.
@brwnlady

@@HearthandHomeEntertainment Yes. The 30-minutes shows seem rushed. I still can't believe how many times I scrolled past the show. As with many shows, some of the foreign accents are brutal. But BB is wonderful. I'm still putting some names to unfamiliar voices.
@loritracy1385
@loritracy1385 8 месяцев назад
@brwnlady --Not just the foreign accents but the opinions. The way they treat Mexicans in general but the police specifically. Like children who just can't be expected to do well without his oversight.

It's more normal for the best person at a role being the first person, and subsequent replacements are unsatisfactory imitations. But Bob Bailey came along late in the day to the role, and was just head and shoulders above all his predecessors. He brought so much more depth to the character in the role. The other actors were bland and generic, and their understanding of the character was superficial. With Bob, you understand exactly what he was like. Dollar lived for the excitement and had a lot of confidence that he could think his way out of a tough spot, but he lived life knowing that every day could be his last. The thought of taking fewer risks to prolong his life would never occur to him, it just wasn't who he was.

Wish he would have had a chance at the television version (more than a pilot episode) of Johnny Dollar. Read where there were 3 attempts (1949-1958-1962) at a television show and all 3 never made it past the pilot episode. They said because Bob was only 5'9" and 150LBs that it did not work due to his smaller physical stature. No excuse to the other 2 actors who also failed. When I think insurance investigator, I do not think of big burly dudes. Not sure why 5'9" and 150 was considered too small??? Seems you would want a smaller agile guy that is quick on their feet.

Yeah I can't believe that this show wasn't one that made the successful transition to TV. Especially during the Johnstone/Bailey years!
@brwnlady

Seems to me, his smaller stature would've worked better. The fight scenes would've made a big guy seem more like a bully.
@spliceoncharlie

@@brwnlady You are right. Seen him in a movie with Laurel & Hardy, "Jitterbugs." I see no reason why he would not have been a perfect insurance investigator. The producers missed getting the true "Dollar" into television.

Thank you for this! There was a specific episode I was looking for where Johnny Dollar is conducting an investigation, and he approaches a house with the lights on and loud party sounds coming from inside. As he gets closer, he realizes that the noise and party atmosphere are pre-recorded sounds being played through speakers to give the illusion of a lively gathering. This clever ruse was set up by the criminals to mislead anyone who might be watching the house. It blew my mind when I first listened to it, and ChatGPT says the episode is called "The Dancing Turkeys Matter" but I can't find such an episode. Do you know which episode this might be from?

I'll have to do a little research and see if I can find that one. It sounds familiar. If anyone else remembers this one please feel free to share!
