Today as part of Autism Awareness Month, I wanted to talk about what it's like being a small craft RU-vidr while also being on the spectrum. Because let me tell you, it is WEIRD.
Normal crafting content will resume next week!

This was a horrible video to make but I hope the handful of people I've talked to about being scared to start their own channels can find a bit of comfort in it because if I can find a way to make this work, you definitely can too. That said, if anyone needs me I will be hiding in a blanket fort. 🙈

One of the best videos I have seen in a long time. As a old woman (64) I finally starts to see my autism, I need so much to understand why I never fit in and feel this sense of confusion in social interaction. Thank you so much. ❤

I have to say I find the breaks between sentences where you edit out looking away to be something that makes your videos so much easier for me to listen to & digest. The slight breaks gives my brain time to process what was said and re-engages it at the start of the next one. It’s something I struggle with a lot watching other videos and in everyday conversations and it’s a welcome break from that ☺️

I love this video, Michelle. I'm not autistic (though I do have some neuro atypical tendencies) and I'm one of those that found you through cross stitching, but I genuinely love all of your videos. Like I've literally been checking my subscribe list hoping to see a new one and I don't do that with any other channels. You ARE authentic, you ARE a breath of fresh air, the self deprecation makes me smile, and the pride in what you're good at makes me grin. Keep it up!

Omg that is such a sweet comment thank you so much! I'm just some random talking about crafts, the idea that people actually look out for my videos is still a bit of a shock lol. Honestly this video was supposed to go out last week and I chickened out, last night I turned off comment notifications and went and hid in a relaxing bath instead because I was freaking out so much. But reading comments like this makes me feel like it was worth the stress so thank you, thank you!

Marvellous! Thank you so much, so uplifting and affirming. I’m going to adopt your “No more Peopling today”. Maybe a tee-shirt? Great phrase. I’m particularly touched that you did this - it must have felt so scary. So far as I’m concerned, it’s just confirmed my feeling that you’re a lovely, lovely person and a wonderful, engaging RU-vidr. My new hobby will be going through all of your videos clicking the like button. I wasn’t diagnosed until the age of 63, and once I had that diagnostic perspective, I came to pretty much the same conclusions about the pros and cons as you’ve talked about here. In my case, it’s a bit late in the day but I’m so glad and thankful that you not only have all that sorted now but that you’re sharing it with others so they can benefit too. Beautiful. ❤

This comment honestly means so much to me, thank you 🥰 I'm in a few communities with people diagnosed later in life and I know about the grief it can cause to look back and think "what if?". The fact is times were different, and it sucks that there was no understanding. I grew up in the 80s for example so this sort of stuff still just wasn't talked about and I was "the weird kid" (didn't figure out why until I was an adult). But my niece was picked up and diagnosed while still at school, so we are seeing progress and all we can do is try to accept our situation and be happy for those who come after. And make really terrifying RU-vid videos, I guess! 😅

What a great video. Yes, I'm one of those who watch for cross stitch and a little bit for crochet, but I find all your videos enjoyable and informative. There's a joy in watching someone who loves a craft or art and expresses it well. Your videos are a great success in my book, so kudos to you. And no need to feel bad about not cranking one out each Wednesday. I think a lot of RU-vid channels would benefit from more quality rather than quantity. I'll watch every one you post - they're well edited, have a great sense of humor, and I love your teaching style. All this demonstrates the care and work that goes into each one. Thank you for this very honest video.

Michelle, I so appreciate your honesty and know that you have helped others understand more about autism itself and those who are unique because of it. I started watching your channel because of your ability to clearly explain the blackwork process but stayed because you were willing to be your authentic nerdy self. I think I watched 4 of your videos in a row and felt like I had known you my whole life. My compulsive, obsessive, multicrafting self had found a channel that inspired my creativity and encouraged me to be me. I know it isn't always easy to be so honest but thank you for choosing to do so anyways.

You do yourself down a little too much lovely - there’s 5.2k subscribers here who all like the niche you have carved out for all of us multicrafters and you’re doing a great job. ❤👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 It’s an odd feeling, sat watching this and going yup… yup…. Oh right, not just me then…. Yup…. I’m not diagnosed with anything, stupid online self-tests put me right on the border of ADHD and David reckons I probably am (he is), but for me this is (read always considered) totally normal. It’s the first time I’ve heard anyone else talk about the need to overexplain to ensure I’m not misunderstood and I don’t hurt people’s feelings and it’s sometimes actually done that 😅😅😅 I thought that was a weird me thing, now I know I am not alone. Maybe you and I shouldn’t have an in person conversation though, we could be stuck for hours…😂 EDITED TO ADD - by this I mean that you've listed some other ND traits that I've not heard before which just make sense, and maybe it's time I thought seriously about getting a diagnosis. LOL - there I go overexplaining for clarity again... Thank you for sharing and being open with us all. And don’t change what you do - you’re doing grand. (And less of the “slow growth”, Mrs 5.2k subs to my 800… 😅😅. You’re actually doing rather well and at a fair clip!)

ADHD brain here and the two share a lot of similarities. I finally saw a professional earlier this year and started taking medication. I may or may not have cried when I came home from work that first week, made dinner, hemmed a pair of pants, and still had energy to do something else before bed. I couldn't believe other people's brains worked so efficiently and mine hadn't for so long. Can't say I hate the hyperfixation tho...😂

Thank you Michelle for sharing all of this, I've learned so much from this video! I was particularly surprised by the idea of "reminders to eat", weirdly enough! 🤭 It sounds impossible for me to forget to eat lunch for example! I was also very surprised you have trouble with eye contact with the camera, it really doesn't show in the videos! 😊I could recognize myself a lot in the "preparation before a trip" as I also need to know the menus and the vibes before going to a restaurant, but it might not bother me as much as you when I don't. I really loved that you also show the qualities your autism brings you even if it might feel weird to compliment yourself, it is super interesting! 🥰 I definitely noticed you were very good at tutorials and you keep my attention throughout your videos, I think you also have great pacing! I would definitely say your passion and authenticity is refreshing and made me a loyal viewer of your videos! 🤭🥰

Ah thank you Marie this is such a lovely comment! So interestingly, it's called "interoception" which is basically your sense of the signals your own body is sending you. Yesterday afternoon I got a terrible headache, like, really really bad. BUT I was focused on finishing off this video, so literally didn't notice that I was in pain until the upload finished and then suddenly...BAM. You are exactly right about putting people into bones. Two of my cousins are autistic and very different. One is non-verbal and insular. The other very verbal and to the point, has a close group of supportive friends and varied interests. I learnt from an early age one label but infinite personal variations. Even those labelled 'normal ' are not identical so it floor's me why other identifiers are supposed to mean identical. That's what annoys me so much about the modern labels being used today with some tiktok influencer being held up as the example for all people of that persuasion. Thank you very much for this video and I hope it educates many. Please don't cut out your 'banter' in the videos! I love it and I'm sure many others do as well. ❤
@TheGiddyStitcher
@TheGiddyStitcher Год назад
Ah thank you so much for this comment. I completely agree, there's no one thing you could possibly say that fits all autistic people and yet there are still such strong stereotypes, it's not helpful at all. I have friends who become non-verbal when overwhelmed, and people just assume that means they're incapable of independent thought and intelligence and will treat them like toddlers. Meanwhile a kid I know just got diagnosed recently and she's the most confident, outgoing person, even I was surprised! Then we have people like me, totally capable of seeming "normal" on camera but also literally run away from situations that ask her to make too many decisions unexpectedly. Ok I have no idea what the end goal of this reply is so I'm just gonna repeat that I agree very much haha 😅

Bravo! Thank you, thank you, thank you. As a mom of 2 daughters, one with autism, specifically Asperberger’s … you not only put my last 32 years of life with Melissa into perspective but passed along important information and tips that I might use when I get all those exhausting questions from family and friends … ie. why does she have to eat English muffins and only 1% milk every morning, why does she always leave the bathroom door open when she’s in there, why does she have issues when it’s windy, why can’t she discard things when time to do so … trying to answer all the “whys” has been so frustrating. My why is why can’t people see her for who she is … she’s Melissa, a 32 yr old young lady who is athletically gifted, holds a job at our local amusement park for 12 years now, is very dependable, never says no to her employer, loves jigsaw puzzles, her hand-eye coordination is impeccable, loves socks and pajamas, Olive Garden is her favorite restaurant, she loves all her family and has daily connection with her grandparents, loves watching old Carol Burnett shows, just completed one year living in an apartment on her own and just wants what everybody else wants … to be happy! So, thank you! I loved your videos that I’ve watched … I haven’t binge watched them all yet. Keep being you ❤

Thank you so much for making this (and you don't need to respond to this comment by the way). I'm not a RU-vidr but I've recently come to realise (in my 60s) that I am on the autism spectrum. Neurodivergency wasn't a thing in my childhood, so I've just spent my life being labelled - which affected my self-image and self-esteem. Although much less severe than the challenges you have faced, a lot of what you said really resonated with me, particularly with regard to working in the corporate world. So many times I went into a performance appraisal feeling confident that I had been doing a great job, only to be completely blindsided with a manager starting off 'we need to talk...'"when you said X, it really upset Y" etc. Thank you for making a really relatable video and doing a great job of explaining what life is like for you.

It's funny because this is the type of content I watch all the time on my personal account! For years now, I've gone back and forth between thinking I could be autistic and thinking that's an absurd idea. (The same for ADHD.) And when you were "coming out" on your previous video, I knew by point #2 where you were headed. I feel so many of these challenges - especially the executive function and socializing (I CANNOT seem to maintain social media accounts at all). I am SO with you on the niche thing. I basically think of the vintage aspect as my niche, instead of the individual crafts, but I don't know if it's working. I try to make the videos I would want to see and just keep believing there's got to be others out there like me - there's no way I'm THAT unique. But it's definitely slow going. Same with the intro thing. But I figure, if they would click away that fast, I'm probably not who they're looking for, anyway. And I'm the same with ideas - there are just too many things I want to make, I'll never run out. I'll only run out of time to make them. I do lack the information gathering thing - while I GIVE too much (clearly - hello wall of text) and have a compulsion to explain myself (even when I don't want to), I fail at gathering it because I just cannot retain anything. My memory is a sieve. (This also plays into the executive function, because I'll want to start a thing, but can't seem to hold on to the information and plan long enough to overcome inertia, which I get bad.) For example, I forget how to cast on knitting every time I start a project, which adds steps to starting. Gonna have to try your tip about holding your expression. I don't have an issue with eye contact, but I still look to my notes or other things frequently. Of course, my bigger problem is my rambling! Such a big chunk of editing time goes into turning my rambling into coherent sentences. Normally, after writing this much, I'd go back and delete all but a few sentences. But since you put yourself out there, I will too. Solidarity!

This video is so affirming for me, a fellow autistic person and a jack-of-all-crafts! I've just started learning cross stitch (and general embroidery) this month, and your excitement for crafting all the things feels like looking into a mirror. I am disabled to the point that I struggle with employment, but people only see how I jump from hobby to hobby and the way I pour my passion into them, and they don't understand why I can't put that energy into a full-time job. This is a great video to help everyone. My son (16) is autistic and he's "nothing like" other autistics, my nephew on the other hand is far more to the stereotype of autistic. There are so many different ways of being and if I'm really honest I never noticed you even were! I know things present different in girls as well as being such a broad spectrum in and of itself. I love your videos because it isn't just one thing. Most other cross stitchers I watch (there aren't many of you tbf) but they all knit and or crochet or game too or something else. I think if you've developed hobbies as we have you can't just stick to one thing, that kind of monogamy leads to burn out which is no one's friend lol 😂 I'd been a bit behind on videos so also saw the one about learning a new craft saying Vs doing and my goodness I felt personally attacked lol 🤣 I've been wanting to 'know' how to knit socks for years and saying it's what I want but never actually trying too hard to do it. Well yesterday I made the Mr drag me to a lovely cute not so close yarn shop where I got all new supplies. I then came home and watched a full tutorial and then realised I didn't have any cheap practice yarn 🤦🏻‍♀️ then today I noticed an entire bag of random sock yarn, so I casted on and am currently on my second round of ribbing 👌 thank you for pushing me to do something I've only dreamed of lol!! Do love your videos and hopefully everyone's been nice in the comments. You don't deserve anything less ❤

Completely agree! Every single person has their own "thing" and the less we expect everyone to work in the same way the better, imo. It's interesting, a lot of autistic people hate crowds (and busy cities especially) and find them overwhelming in a similar way that you do. But I, despite my issues with noise, absolutely love them beause being one in a crowd makes me feel anonymous and like nobody is perceiving me so I can just be free 😆 No such thing as normal, we're all our own type of weirdo and I mean that in the best possible way.

I’ve watched since the beginning because I felt immediately attracted to your direct communication, as you said “weird facial expression” and soooooo much information! It’s really really really nice to feel like I for somewhere with someone. Even if you are a across the pond! ❤❤❤❤ Ps, I make technical training videos for a living, and love that we have the same tricks to getting around some awkwardness ❤

I will watch any video you put out even if it's a craft I'm not going to try myself just because I enjoy your videos and listening to you. My husband also watched today's video and said to tell you he enjoys listening to you (he's frequently in the other room and not watching the video) and likes your delivery. Thanks for making this video! You truly rock and it's just amazing how everyone's brain works differently! I can definitely relate to a few of the things you mentioned, although, I am not diagnosed as neurodivergent. Transitions is a big one. Once I sit, I sit, and then I tend to forget about things I started, like laundry. Laundry takes like the entire week. I also feel like I can come off as lazy and uncommunicative because I don't enjoy phone calls and I often put off responding to emails and then just completely forget to respond to said email. Or all the questions or information in the email is overwhelming that I just shut it down and forget about it! I used to have a really hard time doing new things and going to new places, but luckily anxiety meds help with that now! But I think it's great and brave that you made this video! I really enjoyed watching it! And I edit my videos the same, lots of pauses that I have to cut out!
@TheGiddyStitcher
@TheGiddyStitcher Год назад
Oh you do not even want to KNOW how many different steps my weekly laundry project (which repeats automatically in my todo list) consists of. Stop what you're doing, you need to load the washer. Hey, stop what you're doing, it's two hours later now and there's washing in there that needs dealing with. Stop what you're messing around with, you need to put the washing away and also check whether you're thirsty! Sigh😑 There is definitely a lot of crossover with other things, ADHD, plain ole anxiety, etc. How much of it is actual autism and how much is the inevitable PTSD we all seem to end up with by about age 5 is up for debate.

Thank you so much for making this video! My husband is autistic and a lot of what you have said I can see in him. I have a habit of not exactly forgetting he is autistic but definitely not paying enough attention or recognising how he is trying his best even if he doesn’t appear t be doing anything . We have a 7 year old who is currently being assessed for ADHD so I am trying to juggle 2 different types of neurodiversity’s and acting as a communication conduit between the two of them as they butt heads all the time. My husband isnt great about communicating how his brain is working, especially the detailed stuff so hearing about things from you perspective has helped me understand him better. I love your videos an even though I no longer do all the crafts (the worse my metal health is te more I entrench in to just cross stitch) I enjoy watching them. Your videos are a breath of fresh air after lots of regimented floss tubes all in the same format. Thank you again xx

Oof that sounds hard to be dealing with both in one household, you must be basically a saint! I think it's honestly just hard to describe internal experiences a lot of the time, especially when your communication styles are working at cross-purposes. Honestly, the amount of times per day I have to say things like "...and this is not a hint for you to do X or a subtle complaint about Y I am just literally just saying Z" 😅 I hope your youngling can get the help they need, I hope things get a bit calmer for you soon, and I hope you can feel better and your love of the different crafts can come back out to play 🧡

It's definitely a rollercoaster, but all the things said in this video are things NT people need to hear! The ADHD (brain bees) has a strong intersection with autism, so I wasn't wholly surprised when all 4 of us took the RADS test and aside from himself were well into the 100s. One thing you missed is your organisation (spreadsheet) skills which dip into seriously impressive. Eurovision will never happen without a spreadsheet again.

Lol, I was trying to focus just on stuff that affects RU-vid and shockingly I hardly make any spreadsheets at all for that! I had Dave take a quick screener test once, thinking if we get on this well there must be *something*, and he somehow scored zero. Zero!

I have already shared this video with those close to me; for second-hand confirmation... I'm a 47 yr old female with 3 children and 3 grandchildren. Due to money/medical/insurance/life reasons, my youngest (21yr old) child has never been diagnosed, but we all "know" he's "high-functioning" on the autism scale somewhere. *Side note: I also have a 27-year-old [diagnosed since childhood] autistic nephew.* The thing is; I've often said, "If the Autism Spectrum was just a bit wider, I'd be on it". Watching this video, however, has made me think that it's Quite Possible I've just gone my whole life "undiagnosed". Don't get me wrong, I don't see ANY of this as a negative but as more of a Personal Realization. I so often hear, "How is it that you can excel so easily at "A, B & C", but yet stumble so thoroughly over "X, Y or Z"? Thus far, my answer has always been a frustrated shake of my head [with hands thrown up] and a verbal, "I DON'T KNOW!" I honestly think you have given me the key... I SO identify with 90-95% of what you just described! Rest assured, I'm Not predisposed to identifying with every "oddity/disability/newly-discovered-medical anomaly" or whatever. I sincerely see this Eye-opening discovery [about myself] as a refreshing breath of air. I may broach the subject with a professional, but just understanding more about Me is liberating! Thank you for being You, and for putting Your struggles "out there" for the internet to see! Stay safe and craft/be happy. 😘

Fabulous video! As someone else who does ALL the crafts, your channel is definitely the one for me. I’m one of those pesky neurotypicals (though of the introverted variety so I totally get the limit on socialising!) I work with and line manage a couple of autistic colleagues. I’ve found that we learnt from each other how to work together, acknowledging our ND/NT strengths and weaknesses. For me, it’s been a lot of learning how to curb my worst NT vagueness (Um, it would be nice if perhaps you could consider doing this thing) and getting to the point! (Do the thing!) I loved the metaphor that Fern Brady made recently that NT/ND are just two different operating systems, and for me it’s about learning what we have in common, where we differ and meeting in the middle.
@TheGiddyStitcher
@TheGiddyStitcher Год назад
Thank you! Yes I've heard this OS metaphor used a lot and I think it really does apply. Trying to achieve the same thing can look so different on a different OS, but it doesn't mean it's not possible you just need a different approach! The vagueness is an interesting one because it can be very frustrating to be on the receiving end of, but also asking people to clarify or our directness in general can be interpreted as being rude. So it catches us coming AND going! 😅 We're all just people though, I'm so glad to hear your team have learned to work together because I think those different perspectives and ways of thinking are actually really useful to have in a work environment.
