Mads Stays Noided With that reasoning your saying you don't believe Funhaus or almost every RT affiliate/partner deserves to be monetized. The original commenter said nothing about those videos being made for the four year old demographic. He simply said they weren't getting money. You don't have to be four to enjoy educational content. As for the violent side of it, it's again not being made for that demographic. The violence isn't what they're focusing on, it's the history.

The thing that pisses me off the most about Elsagate is the fact that many people pointed this out nearly two years ago and RU-vid is only now taking action. I get that it is hard for a big company to be flexible, but it doesn't take over a year and a half to acknowledge or even address this, proven by the fact that as the second the MSM picked it up, RU-vid suddenly tried getting its shit together.

Why doesn’t RU-vid start a “Verified” system, where only channels who’ve been verified can have content available on RU-vid Kids? Channels can submit a form to be reviewed and verified by them, and if something is manually flagged, they lose their verification. It’s like the FCC’s broadcasting license program.

Regular RU-vid is already Adult RU-vid, seeing as how their is specifically a "RU-vid Kids". I don't know why Google is operating on the assumption that everyone who uses RU-vid is 10 years old; age-restricting shouldn't be nearly as aggressive, because, again, RU-vid already has a Kids' version. Why is content specifically not for kids being treated like tons of children are going to be watching it? Was this strategy created entirely out of a soft Swiss cheese?

Can I just say I love this podcast. I get to experience and enjoy the Funhaus personalities that I love so much while also learning about something I care about. I don't know what I'll do with RU-vid knowledge I've learned from this podcast over the years but God Damn do I love it.

My sister has recently deleted RU-vid from all her devices because her kids were addicted to it. They would forego eating, drinking and going to the toilet to watch RU-vid. I had a red app on my phone and whenever they saw it they would interpret it to be RU-vid. They could wake up, turn on everything that needed turning on without instruction and go to RU-vid and they would just sit in front of the tv all day listening to creepy nursery rhymes that were computer generated voices. Some stuff on Kids has a lot of effort put into it, where there is real people and children on the screen doing activities and whatnot, but a lot of the million-view stuff was exploitative of children (children eating bagfuls of lollies, or unboxing toys, supposed to be reviews) or the computer made view farms that you guys have mentioned. This isn't just a case of; "oh, the new generation is more tech-savvy". It really isn't.

It's interesting to bring up Adult Swim because it seems that they set up their content so that kids don't stumble into the deep end as it starts with "tamer" shows like King of the Hill or Family Guy (show's mom and dad watch) and then starts going deeper and deeper into more graphic content after midnight. They then seem to slowly recover so if a kid wakes up early Adult Swim is replaying the "tame" shows that mom and dad watch normally.

I agree wholeheartedly. RU-vid can't fail at being a successful business and not take responsibility for it. You guys are the perfect example. A channel that is backed by an internet-based company that could offer RU-vid partnerships and things, and help them as a business, but instead are being ignored and pushed away.

Weetos King The thing is it is easier to just get rid of the app. I have 3 kids of different ages and they all watch different things. I just don't want them to make someone rich watching videos that are not inventive, creative, or educational, and RU-vid puts that crap in no matter what I block or what controls I have on it. If you're allowing your kids on RU-vid, you're a bad parent. There is a reason why to make an account on here, you have to be 13+ years of age. Same rules on Facebook and Twitter, apply to RU-vid. Want to use a table to replace your mediocre attempt at parenting? Fine. But you need to monitor their intake. This isn't like placing them in front of Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network on the TV, it's RU-vid, there's a theoretical endless supply of real fucked up shit on this site that aren't made for kids.

As a parent of 2, my daughter used to watch RU-vid kids on her tablet all the time until we found out on the local news that there were sick freaks putting in subliminal messages into their skits (which consisted of Elsa, Joker, Spiderman, Hulk, etc doing weird shit). It's not that parents are just giving their kids tablets and fucking off to do something else. We genuinely care about our kids, and want them to be able to watch what entertains them. It's just the fact that sick people out there ruined that with their nasty messages they were putting in the videos. That's not a fault on parents but the sick creators.

Lars, you've just became my favorite youtuber, seriously, I am not being ironic. From every podcast I consume you are the only one that is really focusing on this issue (elsagate) and none of you don't even have kids, from what I know at least :). Since you first raised the problem a few weeks back I've done my own research and realized how true this is and started REALLY monitoring and filtering what my 4 year old is watching on the tablet. As I see it, there could be a way to implement a "RU-vid Adult". However, with RU-vid's algorithm as it is now, it would not get rid of the bad stuff on RU-vid Kids. It's a very interesting topic, and I hadn't thought about it until this podcast. Thank you, Funhaus, for making me think a bit deeper on solutions that could be beneficial one day.

Or for that matter expressing a lack of understanding of the history of use of the "gate" suffix itself (ie watergate)? My contention is and has been the conspiratorial overuse of that gamergate crap by Laurence, my contention is only that it is overused by him and that there much more applicable scenarios and scandals to use in juxtaposition to the subject matters in which he uses it as a comparative context which is frankly just my opinion. I am a parent, I have a three year old. I in NO WAY think I am the quintessential parent, I'm just considering every day he's alive at the end to be a win. That being said when other parents tell me they've had to watch Frozen or Cars or Peppa Pig ten million times I never understand that. Along with free will, kids also like structure and repetition. There's so much of the world they don't understand that when they find something they do, they want it over and over and over and over again. Much like you guys mentioned, there is a century of content I can show my kid, and at this moment how and what he watches is completely in my control. If a show comes on I don't like, we don't watch it. It sounds harsh, but he doesn't miss what he doesn't know about. I've even put on movies I watched as a kid, gotten 20 min in and realized that he might be too young and turned it off. Put on something else and life goes on. And because we've always treated his intake of content like this, he never really asks to watch the same thing multiple times. You guys touched on this and I just has to comment my support for it.

as for the argument between shaker and grinder, the answer is simlpe: always use grinder, that way the pepper is always freshly ground and basically just better. if you have problems while seasoning your meat with the grinder becoming slippery and what not, also simple: just pre-grind. just take some small plate or some nonsense like that, grind some amount of pepper into that and apply with whichever hand you want. take that Lawrence

i own a 3 year old and this is just a another parenting "thing". i grew up during the birth of the internet with parents that had no idea wtf was going on. i saw everything.... everything. i know the internet isnt for kids. you just have to keep an eye on what your kids are doing. the second i hear/see something weird, it gets blocked.

In Response to ElsaGate and RU-vid Kids - I think the best solution (at this time) would be to remove the More Views=More suggested. RU-vid Kids Suggestions should stay strictly within their subscribed channels (as when we were kids with our specific channels of Cartoon Network, Nickelodean, and Disney). It would render the bot farms basically useless, and it would allow parents to better understand what their kids are watching. Essentially, I am looking to stop the spiraling effect that is constantly occurring. It's not the best solution, but it would stop the spread of violent and pornographic stuff among RU-vid Kids.

This RU-vid addiction thing reminds me of that TED-ed video on addiction and how fast we consume content: (click video - watch video - repeat) and porn mags decades ago (just a few pages) vs internet porn videos today. It is waaaaay too easy for kids to sink into this and they'll NEVER stop, unlike us. Also, pitting machine learning algorithms against human creators with (evil) intention will not work. The biggest problem is the scale of it. One of the points they kept trying to make was that the videos need to be manually reviewed, that Google needs to hire more employees and provide a curated subsection of videos. RU-vid receives and successfully stores 300 hours of video content per MINUTE. 18000 hours of content would need to be watched and reviewed every hour. Google would need to hire a literal army of thousands of reviewers. This volume of incoming data is not a problem that netflix or cable television has to deal with and it's unfortunately a problem that brute force cannot fix. Anywho, thanks for the episode guys.

My niece's just got grounded from their tablet bc they were using RU-vid kids and it was possible for them to click on ads that would open a browser in RU-vid where they could click on links for flash games that would take them to porn sites.....so this is pretty serious yeah

If you search for the freeform tag "Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics" on Archive of our Own, there's over 28,000 works, and that's just on Ao3, not including other sites like Livejournal, Fanfiction .net, and smaller fan sites. It's relatively obscure to anyone not in the know, but it's extremely popular in fan fiction circles and thousands of artists/writers embrace it in their fan works. It's super hard-netting because it is highly collaborative but really only exists online.

RU-vid Kids needs to switch to a manually approved model that actually encourages content creators to create quality educational content with huge payouts due to high demand. Basically they need to make a "Netflix for kids" service that produces quality content which provokes genuine thought and learning about the world rather than the wonderland-esque ADHD pipe dreams that RU-vid's algorithm currently encourages.

I just want to add one thing to this. RU-vid is a HUGE company which is itself a subsidiary of an even larger company. Why is this important? Because the individual pieces of a corporation rarely move independently. Even with small companies there is very little overall independence of the individual pieces. RU-vid is likely very aware all the issues facing the platform, and they probably have a good plan to fix them. Executing on those plans however is a totally different thing altogether.

Bruce's wheeze at 58:23 gave me a good chuckle. Love listening in (and occasionally watching) you guys (and Elyse) while playing Factorio, sadly I don't see any ads running but I hope every view helps a bit. Also you guys watched that Peppa pig thing last week, and I thought: "Wow, they're watching a youtube poop? ... hang on, this isn't a youtube poop, this is trash. Poops are supposed to be funny and to show off a creator's ability to use a given material to bend it so they say different things and stuff like that, to show off their creativity. This is just edgy." I realized that yeah, kids could be watching that stuff because it just ends up there, but I don't think it would be that hard to separate them from the real stuff since most of them have a YTP tag in the title or something similar. Quite bizarre, but you know, money fuels everything.

Why is it that James is always drinking a protein shake every video now? It's like he's trying to get us to think he's getting swole but the truth is he hasn't been beefy in years. He's still in great shape, so no need to cry about it, but in his waning years he doesn't have a lot left in the beeftank and it's a little sad. If I was James I'd be pushing out reps through every podcast. I'd be tying weights to Elyse so every time I banged her I was also lifting 400 pounds, I'd rig up my pc so it could only be used if I hit my macros that day, and I'd be eating pocket eggs every 15 minutes. You only got 1 life to be ripped James. Make it count.

Can't believe this Elsagate stuff is only gaining traction now - my 2-year-old niece started finding these fucked up videos like 9 months ago; we had to put really heavy parental controls on her iPad, and even then they occasionally sneak through.

On one hand, parents should be checking in on what content their kids are consuming often enough that they can catch problems. On the other hand, RU-vid is offering this product that they say is only filled with child-friendly content and the fact that they aren't delivering on that SHOULD be called out and parents SHOULD be upset that RU-vid is not doing what they said they would. Putting all the blame on parents is letting RU-vid off the hook.
