You're one of the 1st I learned from, nearly 10yrs ago, when I started out looking for the best value/performance/sustainable building techniques & materials. So far down the rabbit hole now, & way past the earthship concepts & basic thermal properties my late father & I talked about... but still some crazy ideas to implement. Thx holmes! Hope to also pass on whatever knowledge I can that might help others (planning a youtube/social media venture).
Here it iz!! Must DIY ICF build of 5-bay garage w/apt above (someday woodshop). 2nd floor pour, ICF roof, backside butted against excavated slope. Off-grid, in the Montana, fire-prone woods. What have you got for me? 🤔
Yup!! Lots of folks here are going to ICF their houses. In my case, i want to ICF the entire, two story building and gabled roof. It'll be a one-stop, ICF shop. The 1st story is, i imagine, pretty straight forward. Pouring the 2nd story floor, then a roof, whale that's another. Pour one story at a time (cold pour for the 2nd story), or the entire shell at one time, pouring the second floor slab later? Then how to tie-in an ICF pitched roof? The process is as daunting as is the sequence that pours must be done in. Mind you, i'm not asking for special attention in this. If, however, it's a subject that might interest your viewers, then i'll toss in my bid for a vid on it. Though i have the raw land to build on, i have not yet made a plan on size or design. It will be something like 32' x 70'. -Anywho, thanks for the come back.
Email if you need consulting btw. kody@uptokode.com. But super basic this is how we built this place. -footings -6’ frost wall pour, then backfill trench. Both sides -pour 10’ of ICF wall for main level walls. Just higher than floor. -set floor and sheet -set & pour 2nd floor walls. -pour rake walls separately. You don’t have to but it’s easier to manage the day.
WOW!! I guess I haven't thought about how long I have been watching your channel. I remember those very early HOW TO sheetrock and taping videos.. There is a reason I've been watching for so long!! lol.. I am extremely sold on ICF building, but for me, in Florida, that only covers the strength and insulation goods of the outer walls. I'd really like your opinion on a very substantial roofing system that will also handle solar panels in a high wind, hurricane prone area like Tampa Bay, Florida. Honestly, I want to build a bomb proof home that is super efficient and that I will not need house insurance on. Insurance here has literally gone THROUGH THE ROOF!!! So has electric power and we need safety and efficiency here in a huge way! I've been telling a buddy about your channel and the envelopes you build. He says: I want a house I can smell a week old fart in!! lol.... It's funny, but he's kind of correct!! Hahahaha...
