It's always important to reiterate the "edited you" dynamic on RU-vid - it's not necessarily that we're totally different in real life, but everyone puts forward the best version of themselves on camera. Great video Hazel xo

I'm glad that you understand that we're not all screaming fangirls! I know other video-makers often don't mean it to seem like this, but it sometimes seems like all teenage girls are viewed as shallow and obsessive; if I met a RU-vidr at a convention, I'd much rather chat about their content than scream manically! This was an eloquent video, Hazel, and I'm glad to see so many people getting in on this discussion!

I loved this. I've had a lot of thoughts about youtube culture in the past few months and I think this recent surge of people projecting the same thoughts has encouraged me to try making a video about it. RU-vid culture has been pushing me away from my love of youtube lately and there are a lot of things about it that I need to get off my chest. So thank you!

Oh, Hazel, that was so, so good. What a grounded and knowing approach to RU-vid celebrity culture. Chock full of smarts. Chock full of heart. It's like Condensed Cream of Wisdom soup. If I were of a mind to put any RU-vidr on a pedestal, you would be that RU-vidr. I will be watching this several times.

Just gonna take notes as I watch the video: I agree with what you said about idolization. I think its ridiculous to idolize anyone--youtuber or celebrity. No matter who a person is or how they got famous, we still only see what the media, or the person themselves in the case of youtube, decides to put forward. I never really realized before starting my own channel just how much viewers dont know about creators. In the 8 months or so that I have been making videos I feel like I've only shared about .0000001% of my life. Other than the few people I've had longer conversations with, no one knows how I react when I am angry or sad or happy even. Like you, I don't think I'm 100% myself in my videos either. "Treat somebody you haven't met like somebody you haven't met"--best advice ever Omg youre going to vidcon??? I'm going to vidcon!!! :D It is really inspirational to think that the people I watch on youtube who have achieved so much are also just normal flawed human beings. But I think the problem with fan culture is that people understand that fact, but then choose to ignore it. I think all of this insanity just stems from the fact that youtube is growing at an extraordinary pace. I think we are stuck at an interesting place right now because youtubers, whether they like it or not, are celebrities. I know no one went in to it intending that to be the case but it just happened. And they only way to show that you shouldn't be idolized is to do just that: show it. But showing yourself at your worst is also probably not a good idea because, first of all, it is more personal, and second of all its hard to want to break an image of yourself that you've built up. Im interested to see where this discussion takes us in the next year... wow, sorry that turned out to be so long!

I'm so surprised I've just now found your channel! I thought I knew about all the bigger Irish RU-vidrs. Guess not! I've watched a few videos on this topic in the last few days and it's such a tough one to even begin to talk about as there are so many variables among content creators and their fans. It makes it very hard to try and generalise. I think you had a good take on it though. Subscribed for sure :)

I hate to criticise, because this was a *VERY* good video, but I do feel that you spoke in a bit of a 'them' and 'us' kind of attitude, and it's important to remember that just because someone isn't part of a particular group of friends or doesn't have 10,000+ subscribers doesn't mean they are passive watchers that do nothing but scream at their idols. There are a lot of people that get treated like they can't see a creator's floors, imagine them complexly, or not idolise them, when they can. Overall, however, this was a clever, sensitive and well-rounded video, so I hate to nitpick, but I do.
@esmith634

I completely agree with your comment. It's important to remember, as I believe Louise pointed out in her video which may be why hazel didn't bring it up, that people who go to conventions are a minority of viewers, and those taking it to unhealthy extremes are an even smaller minority (not insinuating that going to conventions is unhealthy just saying that a lot of this conversation is based on the interactions that happen there). Glad you brought up this point!

Interesting point, VickyThePixie. I think (though I could be entirely wrong) that with the 'us' and 'them' attitude is because she needed to differentiate between youtubers and viewers. Though there is a bit of an overlap (some viewers are also youtubers and most youtubers are viewers), for the most part there's definitely a line - there are many more viewers than there are youtubers and for the most part, viewers don't understand what it's like to be a youtuber. There are even fewer very well-known yt's, thus adding another element to the 'us' and 'them'. Hmm...did I make sense there? Seriously - it made a lot more sense in my head. I watch yt almost every day and think of myself as a 'dedicated' viewer, but not enough that I would spend much money or time (how many hours do people have to wait in line to get a 30 second photo taken??? No thanks!) to go to a convention. I think most viewers are the same and it is important to differentiate between the different types of viewers. Most viewers don't take their dedication any further than just watching the videos. Most of us don't create FanFic, stand in line for hours and hours to see our favorite 'tuber for a few moments - heck, most viewers don't even comment on videos. Unfortunately, there is that very small percentage of viewers that take it to the next level - stalking on twitter, writing horrible and mean comments on videos when anyone voices an opinion that isn't 100% positive, screaming at youtubers whenever they see them and overall just going way, way too far. I think it's because of the small percentage of viewers that take it too far that Louise made her video. Personally, I'd be concerned for the mental health of those viewers that take things too far and I'd be worried about my safety if I were a youtuber. There are many incidents of celebrities being killed by their stalkers and quite a few youtubers are quickly becoming celebrities. That's got to be scary for some youtubers. (Wow - could I have written 'youtubers' any more times?! - LOL)
@madeofcoins

This was so well articulated and paced! Your points about putting people on pedestals so high that their flaws get concealed is so true. And not just for youtubers but for anyone you meet in life. Everyone puts forward their highlights and conceals their flaws, and that's made so much easier by social media. I so often forget this and this video helped drive the point home, so thank you!

I had an actor as my idol for seven years (started when I was 10) who I was absolutely in love with and then, after those 7 years, I had an opportunity to meet him and I realised that he was just an aging, small man. He was really lovely but I felt silly afterwards for putting him on such a high pedestal for all those years. I still am in love with the character he played (the 10th Doctor) but I no longer feel inclined to feel so strongly/intensely like that around people I admire, I'd rather meet them with appreciation and respect (which is what happened when I met him after those 7 years).

I think that many viewers simply watch videos to get away from what's happening around them, it's something that makes us happy and feel as if we "belong" to something. And then yes, obsessive fans do start appearing but for the most of us (I think) it's about having someone to relate to, not someone to worship. Your video was really interesting, and what you said was so very very true, lets hope that things can change for the better! (not that they aren't already pretty good :) )
@piperwhitehead8505

I was going to make a comment about the lord of the rings book in the background but this video deserves a deeper response. I think that the point you made about wanting to be a part of the youtube creator community is hugely important. I know that I've considered trying out youtubing and then deciding not to because a large portion of my motives seems to be because all my favourite youtubers seem like they would be so much fun to be friends with and how cool it would be for people to come to see me at gatherings, and this relates to something I saw in a charlieissocoollike video about how popular youtubers are mainstream celebrities. I used to think I was a bit above celebrity idolising culture because I didn't care about people like Kim Kardasian or people like that but that's not really true. People need to realise that by idolising youtubers or by youtubers creating an environment that puts them above their fans they're breeding all the negative things about mainstream celebrities.

Just browsing through your videos Hazel and I have to say that this is my favourite. The idea of a celebrity in itself is strange. When I was on work experience I was bored and started drawing on a magazine, giving Katy Perry a mustache and making Russell Brand look like a cartoon. As I made my way to the train station, a small crowd gathered outside a HMV as Russell Brand walked out. I hated the feeling I got. I knew of him him not about him yet he had no clue who I was. It was as if I had been stalking someone for years and not realised I had been doing it. I decided to just go home, I mean it was only an hour earlier I was doodling on the guy's face for gods sake!
@gracebeaumont674
@gracebeaumont674 10 лет назад
Thank you Hazel that needed to be said. I hate when people refer to others (be that youtubers, celebrities, whoever) as 'flawless' because they aren't and nor should they be, nobody can be flawless because what is an attribute in one persons eyes is a flaw in another's and everyone has flaws, everyone makes mistakes and absolutely nobody is perfect all of the time.

@vikkielora
@vikkielora 10 лет назад
I really miss the more 'community' style RU-vid before all the perfect filtering. I miss feeling like everyone is on the same level and friends rather than fans, and likewise (no offence) you tubers presenting themselves as such. Most youtubers now 'create content' based around RU-vid itself, such as collabs or quizzes, that can come off as if they are better than others, hence why young girls treat them as such. I think that sometimes it can be misleading to younger people. I'm not blaming youtubers for portraying themselves as perfect as I'm sure we all try to do, but it does mean that they are Segregating themselves.
@TheHazelHayes
@TheHazelHayes 10 лет назад
Completely agree. I think the main thing to understand is that most of us aren't 'trying' to be anything other than ourselves. Yes, we might filter ourselves sometimes but that's only because of our own insecurities or maybe being afraid to open ourselves up completely and be vulnerable in such a public setting. Or as I said, in an unintentional way. The other thing to remember is that a lot of us are much older than a lot of the people who watch us and in real life I probably wouldn't have a group of friends ten years younger than me. So me distancing myself a bit from the people who watch my videos is of course in no way because I see them as 'lesser' by any means, I'm sure you're all awesome, lovely people! :) It's just me trying to be professional and mature and sometimes put in place a bit of distance for the sake of everyone being happy and comfortable.
@vikkielora
@vikkielora 10 лет назад
As I said I totally understand that, especially with the pressure of a large subscriber base and people writing horrible things. I am a similar age to a lot of youtubers, and infact went to school with emma blackery, and so for me it can be a little upsetting but obviously you have to relate to the wider fan base and not just me! My main point is that those of us who have been on or watching youtube for a long time see a dramatic difference in the way that videos are filmed and the content in them, but its not a necessarily negative thing, it's just a thing!

thank you for this. i completely agree. i am so glad you guys are making videos addressing this because i always get a lot of secondhand embarrassment at the people who treat youtubers, and any 'famous person' for that matter, like some kind of god that can be screamed at and hugged and cried on, without respecting their boundaries. meeting people we admire does make us pretty silly but i dont think its an excuse to scream in their face.

Thanks for this Hazel! Really eloquently said! I would be interested to hear about views on youtube culture from really 'famous' youtubers that refer to their viewers as 'fans'. It would be interesting to see their take on this as I feel some youtubers feed into the whole 'fan adoration' and in turn, put themselves on pedestals as well as their fans do of them. Just a thought xx

This has been a really interesting couple of months as both a viewer and a very, very new creator. As someone who is trying to figure out exactly what I want to do on this platform and even if I want to use this platform at all, I've found these videos and discussions on what RU-vidrs hope to be and achieve and what they wish for their audiences to be very helpful. I appreciate that many of these creators are beginning to think about the celebrity culture around RU-vid--both what it is and what is could/should be.

Brilliant video, Hazel! I've had a RU-vid account several years now, and as excited as I am to see all of my favorite RU-vidrs growing & branching out into various creative avenues, it is slightly disconcerting to see "fans" arguing in comments, getting possessive over people we really don't know all that well, and the inexplicable screaming at conventions. *sigh* it's just all really overwhelming. It's difficult to separate the content we enjoy watching from the creator themselves. I dunno.

i think a thing that makes youtubers so admirable is that like you said you have anxiety and other youtubers have other issues and stuff yet they still end up living successful lives and being happy for the most part which i guess is why i watch so many youtubers because they give people hope as they are literally just people but overcome these issues which proves to others that they can too. but yah that's just my opinion on the thing ^^ great video btw x

Also, I think a lot of youtubers do understand this, but a fair few don't. We GET that you're not the same person on screen as off, and it gets slightly frustrating to be told that by every youtuber whose content we enjoy. When you first start watching youtube you do get caught up in it all, but it doesn't take long to notice the cracks in people and get it into your brain that you don't really know them. I think it's perfectly understandable that a lot of people have their youtube 'persona' which is very, very, very slightly different to how they are around their friends. I think most people in the youtube community are quite savvy about it but there is some confusion on both sides :D

I loved this video Hazel! I agree with the 'Treat someone you haven't met like you haven't met them', I myself met a youtuber in public, no need to name, and didn't scream, or run up to them. I calmly introduced myself and that way we could talk and it felt natural. I think sometimes the whole problem is the way the 'RU-vid community' has grown. Now more and more people do collabs all the time, it makes a bigger distinction between the creators and the youtubers when before it was more of a 'everyone on the same level' kind of situation. I think it is important for viewers to appreciate that the creators are just normal people with a public job, and for the creators to appreciate that most of the viewers understand that and a few minority are ruining that relationship. Thankyou! :)

Personally I've never really had this problem with seeing youtubers as more than just regular people. And I'm not saying that to be all like "look at me amn't I all special". It's just that, when I started watching vlogs and stuff, they were all still by and large a person sitting in their room with a webcam talking about giraffe sex or painting themselves purple. The sound quality was bad, the video was grainy, the editing was jumpy, it was largely unscripted, but it didn't matter because they were entertaining or they were saying something that you could relate to (like giraffe sex), and there was no gap. No one had over a million subscribers, there were no conventions, no pedestals, people were just people. I still see all youtubers like that, just in "1080p" now. I'm not sure when that went away or why or if there's any way it could ever come back. Like I wouldn't mind meeting you if the opportunity arose, but just because you seem like a nice person, but just that, a person. Not sure why I felt the need to say all that. Anyway, great video! Summed it all up nicely, you made good points and articulated them well. It's definitely an important topic to keep discussing and to keep in plain view so it's not forgotten about. I can see this being the go-to video on the subject. Keep on doing what you're doing :) Slan agus beannacht

I also really liked the inspirational end, when you say our flaws are not limitations. I've never thought like that! It balances the video nicely. Thank you (and lots of love from Sweden) xo

The best piece of advice in this video that would solve this whole fan/creator problem is to treat someone you've never met like someone you've never met. I think that it's important for a fan to feel free to express his or her appreciation of the content, but that fan absolutely pouring his or her heart out is putting the creator on the spot. I know that I wouldn't want to embarrass myself in that way, but it's easy to get caught up in the moment of meeting your favorite creator, something that you've probably been thinking about for a while. I think that the more personal messages that a fan wants to share with a creator would be better expressed through a letter sent to their PO Box or given to them to read at a later date... that way, the creator isn't pressured to react in a certain way or even respond at all and the situation isn't awkward. I also appreciated how you framed this video, because it was a lot more about viewer and creator safety than it was about maintaining a creator's comfort level. I don't think that a viewer is obligated to handle meeting his or her favorite content creator in a certain way besides what is dictated by the law, and I think that it can make a creator sound unappreciative of his or her audience when that standard is set. Introducing reason to the conversation and some good street smarts is a better way to get the desired result than shaming a viewer for being too enthusiastic or excited for the creators to handle.

This was so well thought out and well put, you and Louise really complement each other in your videos, such a good team! I loved the inspirational undertones to this as well, thats what I think youtubers should be, an inspiration rather than an idol.

You are so so right Hazel, I've been thinking about RU-vid culture for a while now and I'm glad that there's a discussion happening on that topic. In the end, all we can do is imagine each other complexly, respect each other as people equal to us and simply enjoy both the content we receive and the communities stemming from different RU-vid channels. Great video Hazel :) x

I really love the way you yourself admitted that you're someone who has idols and does the same thing that we're discussing, it really adds to the tone of the video :) it shows that you're not putting yourself in a position above it all (not saying anyone else does this, just saying you're the first to express the way you do it too!), that you understand why people idolise RU-vidrs and that you're coming from that place of understanding. It was a nice twist on this entire discussion, adding a good element to it in a way I haven't seen in other people's videos yet :) I don't know if I managed to explain what I mean too well in this comment, but hopefully you get the general idea :P great job Hazel!

I haven't much to add to this discussion other then i appreciate when youtubers acknowledge the fact that we aren't all obsessive fans. Sometimes i think that i would like to be involved in the going ons of youtube friend groups as i share interests with a lot of youtubers (those that they broadcast anyway) but then i realise that i can just go out into my own reality and find just as many like minded people. Excellent video Hazel, you delivered your point with sensitivity and eloquence! :) x

I agree with this point of view in many ways, but I think it's just hard, for us as human beings, to look at it like this. I realize that youtubers don't show all of themselves and I realize how much they've edited the video, but it's still hard, for me at least, not to connect the dots. I think it's just part of human nature that we judge a person based on what we see. How are we supposed to know what they are like off the camera? I can accept that there are parts they are not showing me, but I think it's just psychologically impossible to not make assumptions based on someone at all through their yt videos. You know what I mean? I've seen a lot of these videos on yt culture and while I know the argument of vids being carefully constructed and not showing all of the person, when I watching yt vids of creators I can't help but feeling like I know them. It's a tricky situation. I know I don't actually, but I watch hours of footage of them talking to me about very personal things. How can a person watch something so intimate and personal from a creator and then be told "you don't know me, you just know an edited version of me?" It's very hard to accept that reality, but it's true. That is just my point of view on it, thanks for the video :)

I agree with everything you've said, and also everything everyone else has said about this topic, but I feel like everyone is avoiding talking about the shitty stuff you alluded to and are going 'WE'RE NICE NOT ALL OF US ARE DICKS' which is true and a fair point, but as a fan I feel like all of these videos are making me feel like it's all our fault because we look up to these people. I'm not saying people don't take it to extremes and that we shouldn't be reminded that you are all human and flawed and that we don't know you, but idk it feels like everyone is blaming the fans for everything wrong in the community when in reality a lot of creators play up to it and contribute to the whole culture.
@vagary4665

I agree with all that Hazel said but I also agree with what you're saying towards the end. I wish more youtubers would acknowledge the behaviour of some other youtubers (many of whom are even in their own crowd) who encourage this celebrity culture. For example, the people who say they'll dish out "follows" on twitter in exchange for retweets as if their acknowledgement of a fan is some sort of prize, or who instagram all the celebrity-like events they attend and make the divide even bigger by mainly showcasing the glamorous aspects of their lives. I think many youtubers don't even realise that they themselves perpetuate and feed into the celebrity culture as much as their followers do. Thankfully not all, and thankfully there are some who are willing to shine a critical light both on themselves and their viewers. :)

I completely agree. I'm not going to blame specific people or anything, because of course as hazel said people have flaws, but this mindset of the creators as "these people are my fans" kinda messes stuff up because they treat us like screaming fangirls, so we act like screaming fangirls. it's like how some people are told they aren't good enough and they start to believe it. expecting your viewers to act respectfully and responsibly will cause them to try to.
@helenMUSEfan
@helenMUSEfan 10 лет назад
I believe that fans are indeed a big problem in this situation. I don't think that anyone is 'blaming' the fans solely, nor am I, but everyone is able to think for themselves and decide how they approach people and situations. The "screaming fangirls" choose to be screaming fangirls. They must be aware that by screaming at someone on a stage won't get them anywhere nearer to the person they so much aspire to be closer to. The way everyone should approach youtubers is in the way you would wish to be approached if you were the youtuber. I for one would hate a crowd of screaming people who come for a hug and a selfie. I would want to either actually have a conversation with my viewers and then maybe take a picture as a reminder of our meeting, or nothing in real life at all. I know that what I say is very hard to make a reality, but it's the way I see these things.
@thesuninwinter

I agree, I think the fans are a lot of the problem but they're encouraged so much by certain youtubers that they can't be fully blamed.

All of these conversations about RU-vid culture and idolization keeps bringing me back to older conversations that were going around RU-vid about shipping real people (aka youtubers). My thoughts on the issue was that viewers were never really shipping real people, but as you've pointed out, characters or filtered versions of real people. I know this is a bit off topic but people are obviously still shipping and that can be awkward and uncomfortable for youtubers being subjected to that. What I would say if you, hazel, or any other youtuber feels that way is to remember that we aren't shipping the real person behind the camera, but the characters and interactions we see on screen. Sorry for the off topic message but just came to mind!

I'm so glad that this has come into discussion because I have experienced something recently that has definitely put my attitude towards idolisation and admiration of you tubers, musicians, actors and the like into perspective. I date someone who is in a band, they're pretty well known in our area and at a gig recently I encountered some fans and observed their interaction with the band. It was weird for me to see these girls, lining up to take photos and squealing when one of the band members hugged them, because I just know these people as friends. It was obscure to see it from the other perspective, I know I have been the excitable fan many a time in my life and this experience really helped me to understand this behaviour from a different view point. Hazel and Louise, and everyone else who is engaging with this issue are doing something fantastic because rather than distancing the gap between the creators and their fans, instead they are bringing us closer not by sharing every aspect of their life but by pointing out that these people are real people, and have private moments and lives just like everybody else. As fans we need to learn to respect this, and appreciate them through other means rather than screaming and crying, which quite frankly is extremely intimidating and overwhelming. The youtube community is doing something great by engaging with this topic and I really hope the discussion continues!

Very rarely have I watched a video and not only agreed with everything said but also been able to identify the fact that I subconsciously have done and do do some of these things much more than I care to admit. Its hard when you've watched someone's videos for years to actually grasp that though you might share likes, dislikes and opinions that you don't actually know them, and its hard to come to terms with that when meeting your favourite people/youtubers. I think its so important that people upload videos about this because until its talked about and put into context sometimes it can be hard to know that you actually are idolising someone and reenforcing this barrier that's ever so present between fans and creators. I know for a fact that I've done it before, whether realising or not, and I know that most people have done it too. I think this video will be relevant for years to come, even long after RU-vid is considered old. Ever since the first broadcast technology there have been 'famous' people to look up too, radio hosts, reality TV stars, actors, musicians, podcasters, youtubers and whatever's next. It seems to be human nature to 'idolise' the people who put themselves out to the public, something about the media makes the audience feel insignificant to the point where ordinary people are considered extraordinary people due to status or popularity. I guess it starts in high school and never really goes away. Its a horrible thing, probably one of mankinds worst flaws, I think it must tie into our sense of self-consciousness. Build up these invisible barriers so we can compare ourselves to what we see as success.Whatever it is it really is horrible. It really really is. Thank you so much for making this video Hazel its probably one of my favourite videos on youtube, I thought every word was incredible and you made excellent points. If you've read this far thanks for putting up with my ramble I guess, I just had a lot to say it was a very thought provoking video.

Thanks for this video. I saw the Sprinkle of Glitter video while researching celebrity responsibility and ethics with regard to treatment of fans--because I have also seen people make themselves very vulnerable as fans. I liked what SoG had to say, and I also like your response, and plan to watch more responses to this. -they talk directly to you. It feels much more real and genuine than watching someone sit in a studio or whatever and talk in an interview. The lines become blurred and it becomes a very dangerous place. Ultimately, I think it's important to keep reinforcing the message, that although you all give your viewers a window into your lives, it is a very small window, and should not be mistaken for a complete and honest view. Thanks for an excellently worded, intelligent, eloquent and warm video Hazel

Another aspect of this topic; Many viewers, some of the time, may choose to watch RU-vid creators / channels as a means of harmless escapist fantasy. When watching a video as a 'time-out' from daily life they want to see who and what is on the screen as separate, removed from ordinary life in some ways. They may project all kinds of ideas and notions on to who and what they are watching. Just as creators only present a version of themselves, a viewer may choose a particular interpretation of who they are watching. This is fine in mature conscious moderation but can become problematical in the undiscerning mind and emotions of some young people. Personally I don't like to know too much about creators I enjoy,(I don't idolize), writers, painter, directors, youtubers, etc.. I want to enjoy their creations as ' art for art's sake '. I find that knowing too much, good or especially bad, about a creator distracts me from their work and sometimes may deminish my ability to appreciate their art. It is often difficult to entirely divorce the art from the artist.

this is so true, it's easy to accidently idolise youtubers and any type of celebrity because they always seem like they have so much more exciting lives and are these amazing, unreal people and you just feel like you're missing out. I agree with you 100%. I only started watching youtubers about a year ago, and Alex Day was the second youtuber I started watching and since March I've had so many realizations about youtubers (and life in general since I'm only 19 and trying to figure the world out). One of the first things I realized is not worded perfectly, but I cannot find better words for it "someone I idolized (without realizing I idolized him until now) was humanized to me in one of the worst ways possible". There is so much more I could say (and have said in writing which I made into a 13 minute video of me reading what all I wrote in my journal), but I also know that I will be figuring more things out for a long time regarding Alex Day, I just had a new realization about him a few weeks ago, but I believe everything you said in this video is 100% true.
