The purpose of the two-headed axe is you can keep one side very sharp with a steep bevel for chopping a tree normally and the other side more dull with not as steep of a bevel for hitting things like roots near the ground where your edge could hit a rock or something. Source: Wacked a tree or two.

Fun fact for anyone who sees this. A double bit axe has two blades for a reason other than looking cool. It has to do with edge retention in different materials. One side of the axe is sharpened to a different angle than the other. The sharper of the two sides is for chopping higher up on the tree, where you aren't in danger of smashing your axe into the ground, and the other side is for work closer to the ground, where the different angle is a sturdier edge that won't take as much damage when you invariably clip the ground by accident.

The 2 headed , wood chopping axe is good as you only need sharpen them half as often but , yes you need to spend more time sharpening

The purpose of double bitted axes in history was (likely) primarily for woodchopping, so you could chop until the first got dull, then keep using the other side for a good while before they have to stop to sharpen the blades.

1:55 to answer that this is because double headed axe are actually much more balanced for swinging around, and the second axe could be more fine tuned for splitting logs vs for cutting down tree

Bit late but a double headed axe has two heads, they have different edge angles on either side. One side is for stuff like splitting and not sticking as much, that side has a Steeper edge angle, the more shallow side is for biting deep into a tree. To take the chunks out and fell the tree. Essentially a 2 for 1 deal

double headed axes are basically a backup axe. if one blade gets dull in the field, finish your work with the other side then go sharpen your axe

If you look closely at the thumbnail the wing of the bird looks like an eye, the tail looks like feathers at the top of the head, the eyes look like a nose and the legs like a neck

This is a bit late but the reason lumberjacks have two heads on thier axes is because when one side becomes dull they don’t waste the day walking back to the camp. they just use the other side

The reason some axes have two blades is for woodcutting, one blade is kept extremely sharp for easy felling of a tree, while the other is kept a bit more dull for chopping roots, as striking the ground is a quick way to dull any sharp blade, so one blade is kept a bit more dull.

double headed axes, also known as a double-bit, have two blades with two different bevels. One is a thinner bevel to chop into wood easier and to also dig in deeper each cut, while the other is broader to split, making each hit drive the wood further from itself. Essentially the thinner is for cross cutting while the thicker is for rip cutting/ splitting.

The reason for a double headed axe: lumberjacks who got paid by the tree actually needed differently ground edges. One was used to remove bark, including moss and maybe little stones and all that, and the other edge had a more flat grind and was solely for cutting the clean wood. Thus allowed them to cut trees down more easily without having to re-sharpen their axes all the time

To my knowledge, double headed axes were originally used so that lumberjacks could keep one side super sharp, and one side more dull for different types/thicknesses of wood, I could of course be wrong but thats what ive heard

There is actually a very good reason to have a double headed axe, especially in lumberjack work/logging. Two different heads for two different purposes, instead of carrying around a sharp chopping ace and a dull splitting axe have them both attached to the same handle to save weight and the extra weights helps in the swing.

usually they'll grind the two ends of the axe at a different angle, one for felling and one for another purpose such as splitting or limbing

Two headed axes are quite useful. I have one and the two heads have two different grinds so i have one for splitting and one for felling and hewing. It also does weigh more but that’s a benefit as it can hit harder

they make double headed axes because the lumberjacks liked to sharpen one side razor sharp to get through the big knots of the trees and they’ll purposely keep one side a bit duller to get through the part of the tree that doesn’t have any roots.

Forget those "Arm sleeve" things, just quickly scrape a large portion of the scale off with a steel wire brush

Use mustard on those burns!!! It not only prevents the burn from blistering but it also makes it as if you never were burned in the first place! Apply directly to the effected area in a thin layer and voila burn no more!

As a note to him mentioning grinding is scary. One thing I was taught and wish I had listened to, is as soon as you're not scared of a tool is when you hurt yourself. 2 screws in my wrist and a hand that will never work properly again is exactly why I will remain scared of any power tool, but especially grinders, and even moreso the 9 inch since that was what, in a split second, almost took my entire hand off.

The reason is because like a lumberjack you keep one blade edge sharp like a knife to cut and a v shaped edge on one side so if striking a harder surface it will damage your edges less.

The only historical reference I'm aware if for double headed axes being used for chopping was to give a variety of cutting vs chopping edges on a single tool. By changing the angle of your edge. You can make a more sturdy or more precise edged tool.
