What we're witnessing here is just a hyperdistillation of what happens to friendships as we age throughout young adulthood and into middle age. Pretty much all of these instances resemble what most of us go through with one friend or another as we grow up and start to plant our roots...there's the friend we talk to but don't hang out with much, there's the friend we ended things on a sour note with and created a wound that just won't heal, there's the friend that gradually faded away and became almost a stranger...a lot of these friendships manifested in collabs and we can see the major beats play out. Yes, it's "just content," but it's also who these people were at that moment in time.
@@ZackarySmigel I expected to hear, at least in passing, definitions for booktube, breadtube, disabilitytube, etc. and a mention of how huge Spanish, French, and especially Indian RU-vid are. Just out of curiosity: before reading this comment, were you aware that there are tens, if not hundreds of disabled RU-vidrs, just among the English language channels? Or that a few (English speaking) DisabilityTubers have around 1M subs?
this video is going to blow up, 100%. only 14 subs and the quality is insane. You've earned a sub for sure. edit: 57k subscribers later and this video still rocks. ive watched it maybe 4 times because its so well done
@@RohitchaharXDi mean makes sense. Most of us are probably coming over from the recent video about RU-vid algorithm and checking out what else he has. That video seems to be exploding so with how new this channel is, it's basically growing almost 1 to 1 with that video. Kinda neat to see actually
gus eddy break up was really a crazy time. gus used to (idk if he still does) as some sort of wholesome aware guy. he even had videos criticizing people like chris brown or wendy williams, pointing out their wrongdoings. their joint podcast was really fun and lighthearted, one day it suddenly stopped and i had no idea why... until i read some comments and found out. sabina's story was basically all about 'i almost died, healthcare system lets pregnant people, my ex treated me terribly'. and sadly maaany people thought she posted that video just to ruin gus? and smaller commentary channels who spoke about the issue would point out 'hey why the big guys aren't talking about this, is it because gus is their friend?'. gus' friendly image, how much he shown himself as the dude with nice family, who seemingly is a green flag. hell i hadba blast watching the booger court video. if anything gus ruined his own image the moment he decided to treat sabina the way he did, her telling her story was her own right. it was jarring to hear how the "real" gus was different from his youtube persona. eddy was caught in a crossfire, and ultimately chose to cut all ties with gus. which honestly could've been a career-ending move, as his brand was inherently tied to gus. i personally can't stand gus, mistreating a pregnant partner is never okay. doesn't help one of his first comeback videos was about faking injury or something like that
Yeah I used to love his content, but now I can't even look at him anymore. The "wholesome" facade he wore only for it all to be a lie just made me lose all interest in him or his content. Especially finding out the terrible shit he did to someone that I cared about *because* of his channel.
god I was such a big gus Johnson fan, and when his abuse blew up online, that was honestly the only time I felt betrayed by someone famous. I loved his videos, he was one of my all time favorite creators, I frequently showed my mom his videos, and he always seemed like such a stand up guy. so crazy to think back to the dozens of sketches that I would watch over and over again, and think of gus as a bad guy. I of course never can go back to his videos, but it still makes me feel weird whenever I quote something in his sketches that I still find funny. weird how one of my favorite creators can do such a violent 180 for me.
Hello, my name is Zackary Smigel. I've been creating RU-vid videos since I was a kid. You might have seen me from my real estate education channel Real Estate License Wizard, where I obtained 60,000 subscribers and over 5 million channel views. I have since left that channel for creative pursuits, and this is my first crack at starting something new. I'd appreciate a like and subscribe if this content interests you and I captured your attention for even just a few moments. This is my first video using this style and format. The first time using a green screen and these editing techniques, I know the audio and the green screen key weren't perfect. That's again, because I never used a greenscreen or shot video like this before. I promise you, my viewer, that I will improve my technique as I create more entertaining content. I hope you enjoy! Don't forget to like and subscribe for more! EDIT 6/20/2023: Wow Smosh just got back together! Crazy News!
People making silly vids for strangers on the internet turning into influential micro celebrities and THEN beating the shit out of each other for money is very strange indeed.
The way you were too sane and normal to assume Anthony and Ian had a falling out and were just being respectful about it online but also I cannot imagine how amazing it must have felt for them to say they are literally going to go back to making intimate sketches on their own literally less than a month after you posted this............unlessyousecrelyknewthiswholetime?!?!?!?! 😵🧐🙊👽🤔
Huh. The timing of this video, with the Smosh section, was perfect to show how fast some of this subculture stuff could change and take unexpected changes with what happened with Smosh soon after this came out. It's crazy.
clicked without looking at views or sub count. Title was interesting and holy shit. I totally expected you to be in the 100k-250k sub count range and this vid to be in the 250k to 600k view count range. So good bro, keep it going. I see you with a youtube plaque for sure dooood
I feel like RU-vid is pushing your content in every way possible. About two days ago, one of your videos appeared on my homepage and while I did notice it I did not watch it until a day later when more and more of your videos started to appear and now they are everywhere. anyhow, not that i mind because you actually have some great content!
i introduced a guy in college to gus johnson and always sunny bc i wanted an excuse for us to hang out, the pipeline from that to republican fratboy was so unexpected at the time but in hindsight not so much...
Wow it’s awesome that the algorithm recommended this to me, I watch an awful lot of RU-vid and this is a great video. Subscribed for more content like this.
Funny how I found your videos from youtube recommending me your (very justified) critique of the youtube recommendations system and now I'm just binging all of them!
And as messy as this all was, it gets infinitely messier when you realize this is just a subculture of a subculture of a subculture of a subculture of RU-vid. There's beauty RU-vidrs, true crime RU-vidrs, mukbangers, etc. bigger than most of these RU-vidrs ever were that a lot of people following this subculture have never heard of(and vice versa), with their own schisms and alliances.
Very neat idea for a video, and I love your reason for making this one! Amazing first attempt at a video (at least on this channel versus your real estate one!)
Luckily, after this video, Smosh got back together and they are on the right path, their sketches have the old school flow but fresher topics, sensing what can be a sensitive topic to joke about, yet the fun, funky and crazy shenanigans are still there, while using cameos and their Smosh Pit team as well
i do have to say as a fupatrooper myself(h3h3nation apparantly) i thought it was widely known we are fupatroopers? also the past 2 years since frenemies has beeen so fantastic you missed the whole we do it live era, debate king era, streaming 4 hour eps 4 days a week and the many many other giant points about our subculture! but much love you are very well deserved with this fire video i expect to get recommended more from the algo thanks king!
There's so much h3h3 lore its hard to cover it all in a small segment. I definitely could've expanded. Maybe if I do a part two I can cover more! Thanks so much for the comment!
@@ZackarySmigel I was going to comment something similar. This is a great video, but there is so much more to h3 culture. I'd love to see another video like this just more expanded! great job dude, def deserve more views for all this hard work.
Wow. To prove your point, I used to watch Gus and stopped watching him or anyone associated when I heard the drama that he forced/pressured Sabrina to have an abortion. I didn't wanna look at his face. I had no idea it was an ectopic pregnancy (which will kill you) and apparently the real point of contention was lack of support during the surgery? Idk, when she said that I could immediately imagine he was really a jerk. I still don't want to watch any of Gus, Eddy or Sabrina. But just goes to show, I didn't even know the drama of a creator I actually followed. Forcing your gf to have an abortion seemed pretty indefensible to me. But turns out it was literally the one possible exception. As for his other behavior, I guess his collaborators can discern for themselves what they're ok with.
not everyone that has an opinion hates what they are watching, they might just be critical to try to reach through to the majority of peoples' common sense
I feel compelled to comment for the algorithm because although youtube did recommend you to me, this video should be in the 6 digit view count at least. Wtf this was so well researched and comprehensive. Great job dude!
It's wild watching this now knowing that Ian and Anthony bought Smosh back and that Creator Clash 2 was a massive failure with no money going to charity.
I had your latest video recommended and went back to watch this because I'm into internet history. It's really well done. I knew of all these creators but didn't know the history of a couple of them. Creator Clash seemed so weird and cringey to me but RU-vid fandoms are intense, especially when you're in high school. Subscribed!
I've been on RU-vid since 2010 and I've never watched any of these creators, it's been entertaining to watch from a distance without an emotional connection. When it comes home to roost it's very upsetting and sobering though.
I think it's extremely important to point out that there are massive differences between Sam Hyde and old Idubbbz. Idubbbz merely made edgy videos, where he sometimes said racial slurs or had some insensitive opinions. Sam Hyde publically donated to the Daily Stormer, a neo-n*zi site. Hyde is not merely edgy, he is an outright racist who hides behind layers of irony.
the only evidence of sam hyde donating to the daily stormer was a donation thank you message on their site, literally anyone could make a donation with someone else's name on it, especially sam hyde
I'd love to see a list of like the 10 largest and most influential subcultures. I always find myself wondering what other huge subcultures and niches are out there. Perhaps individual videos of individual creators from different subcultures that we could list together in one big playlist or something.
Historical CosTube is my favorite niche! :) Bernadette Banner is probably the most well- known, but my favorite are Abby Cox, Nicole Rudolph (who the hell make their own SHOES???), Morgan Donner, NotYoMommasHistory, and Bianca from Closet Historian. Sewists who dabble more in history bounding, Rachel Maksy being the beast, Stitchery and Mariah Pattie, Adjacent to this is sewing & crafts: Moriah Elizabeth is the beast... and probably Jazza, but see also NerdECrafter, Dollightful, Super Rae Dizzle.
HistoryTube / historical reenactment is also big (Living Anachronism is my current favorite among those channels). Booktube is massive, and channels focusing solely on fantasy are many. Heck, channels solely about Tolkien and Middle Earth lore publish more videos than I have time to watch (I recently found Part-time Hobbit, and promptly subscribed). Disabled and/or chronically ill RU-vidrs are also many, some of them make videos mostly about disability, technology that aids us, societal attitudes etc. while others have a different main focus and only sometimes make videos specific to the disability community. I have collected some public p1ay1ists, if someone is curious, as disabled own voice videos are pretty hard to find by searching, RU-vid tends to push doctors', teachers', and physiotherapists' videos, instead. Media analysis and critiquing is also huge, my favorite is the Lost in Adaptation series on Dominique Noble's channel. It will soon have over 300 videos, IIRC. And those are just some subcultures I happen to know about, and only in English. There is a vast RU-vid out there in tens of "big" languages and probably over a hundred smaller ones.
I hate post 2012 RU-vid. It was about people sharing fun, quirky stuff. Now It's a business with people that have no business being in these positions of fame and responsibility.
Hey man! Happy to see you here! Thanks. It was my first time EVER using a greenscreen lol. I'm still working out the kinks from a production standpoint, but I feel like im improving constantly. I hope to hit my stride within a month or so. The plan is one video every week until I'm monetized and then after that one video every other week or more. So far, so good!
Ethan was heavily inspired by Sam Hyde early on. He even had to edit in the description of a particular video that it was a tribute after he was exposed.
This is the only type of junk food content I even give a chance, not your vid but the stuff your talking about. I’m well aware of the fact it’s some tabloidesque crap but it’s mine as no one I know is into RU-vid as deep as I am. Good shit bro
Now reading the comments and seeing that you didn’t even have 10k suns a week ago it seems and this video is 2+ months old is insane, shits high quality and gets yt which I love. Let’s hope the algo keeps on hitting and making you grow more and more
I love your style, and how you approach discussing the topics you choose! You’ll definitely be blowing up in due time!!! Best of luck, and see you around the RU-vid realm. ☠️ Hahahaa!
im really curious to see how the dynamics of parasocial relationships will change in the following years... it feels like people are constantly getting more involved with time passing, as the internet and its culture become more and more influential
I just started the video, but at minute 1:46, I wanted to ask if everyone is seeing the same impressions because all the thumbnails shown to you have been shown to me. By the way, I'm an older (54) RU-vid viewer who's been watching since its release. I know all the creators and personalities, old and new, but I haven't kept up with the fallout. I might be too old to care about their drama, but I am enjoying your content.
I wonder if there are other components to how we subconsciously associate RU-vidrs other than the genre of their content. Is style a stronger indicator of where fanbases will converge and branch out? Tone? Video length? Scriptedness? Subject matter? Why is it that the phrase “commentary RU-vid” usually calls to mind comedy commentary creators like Jarvis Johnson or Eddy Burback as opposed to more straightforward, in-depth commentary from the likes of The Right Opinion or SWOOP (I say this with a hearty respect and admiration for all four of them, fwiw)? Why would that genre implicitly only cover Internet media commentary in the first place? I think you’re onto something when it comes to untangling the way we understand genre on this platform, because I think a lot of it boils down to who’s friends (or enemies, or even, dare I say, frenemies) with whom. Then again, there’s certainly precedent for that kind of thing in the arts; a nineteeth-century British poet’s chances of being well-known are going to correlate at least somewhat to their proximity to Lord Byron, for example. Still, it’s interesting to think about other ways these things might be categorized.
You give Smosh as an example, but little did you know... Now Ian and Anthony are back together and OWN Smosh again! (also, I think you meant to say "if you are between the ages of 30 and 40" Smosh was breaking out when 20 year olds were still in diapers 😂)
Many of these "content creators" become so during adolescence. That way-of-being made them famous and very wealthy with little effort. Now, they are unable to grow and mature in character or intellect without it all crashing down. And most don't have any actual education or employment skills.
Great video, and the second one I've watched. I've never paid a *whole* lot of attention to most of these creators or subcultures, but there were other creators I watched a fair bit at times over the years. It's nice to have a little peek into these subcultures that were only ever vaguely on my radar. You got yourself a sub! :) P. S. I love a good video essay! 😁
Well, we can't be completely divorced from context. True, we need to be rational about our relationship with these creators and their creations, but that also means that we need to be critical. Two people have beef about art/creative direction is one thing, two people having "beef" because one of them has sexually assaulted someone is a completely different situation and they need to be treated as such.
Gonna binge the channel to bypass the algorithm and **then** subscribe to further up heave the confusion the algorithm will experience. (algorithm engagement post) I learned Ethan Klein makes quite a good Fester Addams impression. 5:23 Actually, Wrestling got close for the Americans. They believed it was real, they couldn't tell what was fake and they invested emotionally in their idols.
I disagree when it comes to judging people who stay with RU-vidrs who have done horrible things. By continuing to collab with an abuser, you are condoning the abuse they did. You are able to look past their abusive actions and continue working with them to make money. There is something rather gross about that.
Thank you for the comment. I think that's definitely a valid criticism of the culture and current environment we live in. The issue is that many people believe what they want or actually believe one party and do not believe the other. It's a mess, which is exactly why I made this video. It can be confusing and frustrating for any new person exposed to this; they must watch hours of content to formulate an opinion. It's insane. That's why I tried to provide the facts and allow people to formulate their opinions. At the end, I said just to enjoy the content, which is true for the most part, but I really wanted people to understand the unsurmountable mess that is RU-vid subculture and formulate their own opinions. I hope that makes sense. Again, thanks for the comment!
Ian and Anthony were not friends at that time, as they had talked about during the coming back video. Even before that, there were clips showing how they were arguing with each other. I remember one of the Pokémon parody they made. It was hard to watch.
I only follow very few of them these days, but I was into the UK part of youtube's subculture in my teens. It was nice to see the collab culture they had at the time.
RU-vid should allow users to curate content in a way that's more engaging than playlists. And there should be some juice for this curation on the main page, when it is topic-relevant with the user's habits.
why would him telling her to terminate an ectopic pregnancy be a bad thing? Those kill you on their own if they grow too large. They never make it to term. like what??
Yeah, I was wondering about that too. It sounded like she was pursuing a surgery to salvage it, but from what I read this stuff seems pretty unsalvagable.
This is just confirmation that I never have been and don't care to be cool. 😂 I've been on RU-vid as a watcher since the early days... and have never heard of these!
Best to appreciate the art and not understand too much about the artist. There’s been so many times where I find out something about somebody’s personal life and it trains my view of all of the work they’ve ever done so I would prefer to just not now. Ignorance is bliss as they say.
