Peep the unboxing video here: • YOW Calmon 41” Surfska...
In this video I take the YOW 41” Calmon surfskate on its maiden voyage! This is my first “long” surfskate and I’ve been waiting patiently to ride it because I wanted to film the session for an authentic first impression experience. If you want to know more about the board including why I got it watch the unboxing video here: • YOW Calmon 41” Surfska...
I learned a lot while making this video and hope you find it helpful. If you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments. Thanks for watching! #YOW #surfskate

Great video! I like how you reflect on how the board feels while you're riding it! Reminds me of myself trying a new snowboard. Many people make the mistake to judge a new ride instantly without adapting to WHAT THE BOARD WANTS YOU TO DO!! I love how you're like "I think I need to ride this more like a longboard!". You're instantly reflecting on everything after the first turns feel sluggish and unexpected. Also, later on you say that you're curious to watch this video yourself to see how things look. That is huge..., and it's great that you're mentioning that to your audience. Board sports are soooo much more than just lifestyle and coolness factor!! Love it!! Thanks for the video!

Looks like you were having so much fun !! Thanks for the vid man ! It's actually the only one I found out there on the internet and it's perfect because I just wanted to see how the ride would be like ! That board is soon going to be part of my surfskate Quiver (Toledo / La Santa / Black Tip) ! Cheers man :D

nice YOW. Just got the YOW -Arica 2022 model a few days ago and it's time to say goodbye to Carver. Hope to see you somewhere here in L.A. and We can skate together sometime. That Calmon is probably broken in by now. Cross steping or nose riding seems crazy with the Meraki truck but I would like to see more videos of what you are now doing on that thing now. Blessings !!!

Thanks! I'm having such a hard time deciding between a long-board or a surfboard to start skating, but I might just get both with this one. Really cool video. Thanks again! :3

Haha it’s a tough decision for sure. If you’re interested in learning how to pump or move the board on your own with no “pushing” with your leg then a shortboard is the way to go because it’s easier to generate your own speed. If you’re ok pushing with one leg and maybe have some soft/slow downhill runs around then the longboard is the way to go because generating your own speed is a lot harder on a longboard (as seen in the video!) But it never hurts to have more than one board in your quiver for options! Thanks for watching 😎

I love your stoke on this new board! Actually surprised we haven't run into each other one weekend. I added softer bushings to an eskate to allow it to carve and am on the boardwalk whenever the waves are flat. Still working on tighter turning with a waterborne adapted 30" x 10" surfskate. I'm basically you circa 2018 and working towards a breakthrough... awesome videos... appreciate you sharing these behind the scenes work sessions!

@@justaguywithabible2313 I have 70 mm Orangatang Stimulus 80A wheels. The board is super chill and nice to ride. I have the yellow one. The grip tape gets dirty easily as it's a light color. If you want to ride in a bowl than that board would be too big and it would take some time to do manoeuvres. If you would want some longboard dancing on it it has a good length. If you want to transport it with a car it's a bit big, I don't think it would fit in the trunk but it would fit on the back seat. Or you can't put it on a skate backpack (too long and rather heavy) If you plan to do radical surfskate manoeuvres like bottom turn I would rather get a shorter surfskate. I don't regret my purchase but I also have shorter boards.

I love your videos, especially because of your voice acting. I'm thinking about buying this one, but I'm not sure....Could you make another video with the exact difference in terms of riding between "normal" surfskateboards and this one? I'm not a surfer so I don't have a comparison.

Hey Ben, great video. How has this board held up over time? I'm keen to get this board but am concerned that the cork will wear thin quickly and look super dirty fast. Look forward to hearing from you and thanks for the great videos.

Nice, Ben! Curious to know what wireless mic you're using. It's fantastic.
@BenConley
@BenConley 2 года назад
Hey Steve great channel man! Glad you asked haha. The mic is the Movo EDGE-DI-DUO Dual Wireless Lavalier Microphone System for iPhone and while it sounds pretty good, it’s totally unreliable in the field. At least on a moving subject. I’ve used it for several of these skate videos and experienced signal loss on all of them. This particular video was the worst. I had to trash a lot of footage/commentary that was ruined due to cutting in and out. Super bummed because the concept is cool and I was stoked to have a wireless mic solution for my iPhone but never again. Back to old reliable - Sennheiser lavs, my H6 Zoom and will sync in post (when I shoot on my phone). Thanks for watching!

@BenConley Год назад
I've been meaning to! But yeah I'm def on my shorter boards more often because with the longer board I need the right spot with a subtle downhill to help with momentum/speed. I don't love pushing with my foot (especially barefoot) and pumping with a longer board feels awkward. A nice long subtle downhill run is ideal but I have to go looking for a spot like that. And then there's the walk back up the hill (barefoot) when I'm done with the run haha. Thanks for watching!

Eventually, what would be the ratio of you riding your SmoothStar #77 vs your new YOW? Cross stepping hasn’t cross my mind at all.
@BenConley
@BenConley 2 года назад
That is hard to say…if it’s anything like my surfboard quiver I tend to ride the crap out of a board once I get it to really get to know it then go back to the other boards to feel the difference. Conditions and mood also matter haha. Careful with those cross steps if they do cross your mind. Thanks for watching!

hello, what do you think? is a longer board or a shorter one better for learning to pump? greetings from Switzerland
@BenConley
@BenConley 2 года назад
I personally think a shorter board is better for learning how to pump because it’s easier to create movement rail to rail. But if someone is new to skating in general I would prob recommend a longer board for stability. Hope that helps, thanks for watching!

Cork surface vs standard surface?
@BenConley
@BenConley 2 года назад
I plan to do a follow up video about some of this because I think time will help offer better insight but in short the cork top for me is best for barefoot riding and super cruisy stuff. When I try to push it barefoot with more agressive turns traction gets a little dicey especially at the beginning of a session when feet are more dry. With shoes it’s less of an issue. Standard is def better for exfoliation 🤣

I do! Def has helped with cross stepping. In fact just got some Surfline footage riding the nose on my 8' Wave Bandit all thanks to practicing on this board. Def helps to have a little slope versus simply pumping it around. Leg pushing helps. Thanks for watching!
