Do you remember "The Zone" on YTV? Not those segments with Sugar. I'm talking about PJ Phil. And even before Snit was around. Check out this rare bit from "The Zone" of 1994 on YTV.
I used to watch Phil and the zone all the time!!! I used to come back from french school and was excited to watch english television and sailor moon even though teachers did not liked it!
One of the greatest moments of my childhood was meeting PJ Phil and PJ Katie and getting their autographs when toured across Canada. Seriously, I can still remember it and it was awesome.
you can tell Phil LOVED his job and talking to us, he was like that cool older kid in the higher grade you always wanted to be friends with, and he really tried to convey that via the letter reading and stuff, R.I.P. old school YTV
This is why I love Canada, such diversity. Phil was Philippino (I think). A relativley small minority in Canada. But looking back, he was the host of the country's largest kid's television network back in the 90's. Something you would rarely find in a lot of other countries
I don't know what to say....I really really really miss the 90's...The culture and everything else around me really shaped who I am today, it's so great to be able to watch snippets now and just WISH that I had taped everything.
The Muppet Show ended on YTV February 11, 1994, and You Can't Do That on Television stopped on February 27, 1993. This was when Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was at 5:00pm followed by The Adventures of the Black Stallion at 5:30pm, so sometime between Feb and August 1994.
power rangers was the shit, i remember i asked my mom to record power rangers because i always came home from school right after the show and i got so sad when she didnt.
Latchkey kid chiming in here. Like many kids who grew up in the 90's, both my parents worked full time leaving me in front of the TV a lot. This guy pretty much raised me. Favourite PJ Phil moment ever was when he went on the air and started ranting about how WUTV Fox 29 in Buffalo copied the YTV zone format, down to the talking TV bit.
We were so lucky those born in the 80's to of grown up during these golden age times. DJ Phil was my favorite host by far but then again by the time of Sugar and whoever they were came around I was a teenager doing light drugs(Ganja/Shrooms) not even bothering with YTV. I wrote The Zone a letter to be read when I was like 9 or 10 but it never made it because that letter would of had to ship across Canada. I knew that though but did watch in case it did haha.....also wrote Video Arcade Top 10 and Nicolas Picolas actually recieved it and read my letter on air but thing is...I never used my real name but then again neither do most of these DJ's. So much for that prize ;)
Oh my god. I remember watching this exact segment in 94 when Phil explained why the Muppet Show was cancelled. It was somewhat of a big deal for me when they took it off, and this segment and Phil`s explanation stuck in my mind. Of all the hundreds of clips you could have posted, it`s really weird that you posted one of the few I actually remember.
I am so glad to have had somebody like PJ Phil to watch when I was growing up. Phil was goddamn sincere, funny, friendly, and it is a shame he is not the host of any TV shows right now (that I know about). Phil and Snit were such a big part of my childhood years, and a whole lot of other kids. I remember I went to Pladium in Toronto for a vacation one year... And he was filming GAMERZ. Because he was pretty much my idol I was too scared to go talk to him. So funny now that I think back on it.
I remember this one letter that had me in tears, apparently this kid had fantasized these shows out of thin air. When Phil finally realized it, he was ROFL literally.
Phil is in a whole other league, though! I appreciate Stephanie Beard for what she was, though! They had plot lines when she was a part of the Zone! And she did the voice of Chibi Moon in the English adaptation of Sailor Moon! She's awesome, but Phil was the Zone King. They're too different to compare, in my opinion!
Man, this was the VERY FIRST Zone segment that I saw, and it's what got me watching YTV. I was flipping channels, saw that Power Rangers was on, and watched it. I wanted to see if the station had other awesome shows, so after Power Rangers was over I continued watching. This Zone segment followed. I was four years old (very nearly five). The nostalgia has hit me so hard that I'm a little dazed.
Older YTV destroys what they're doing these days. This guy's hilarious. I like how he doesn't talk like a baby to kids, too. It's so cool. He even takes that one kid to task for writing in yellow. It's not a lot of hosts can pull it off so well.
damn, i was like 8 years old when i watch phil being host of ytv... he's the best host on that station EVER. its strange now that we're now the same age as he was back then... miss the guy =\
i watched the muppet show on ytv with my mom, when i was 3-4 im 21 now i still rember coming home from kindergarten and finding my mom on the couch watching the muppets and being suprized she liked it too,i sat and watched it with her, after that we would always watch it together, she would tell me about each of the guests on the show. sometimes me and my sister would catch you can't do that on tv.
OMG!!! I REMEMBER THIS!!! And the Tv what talked and that stuff!!!! I miss the old classic YTV. I havn't been on that channel for years but the last time i was on it was completely different!
oh man... i completely forgot how deep that canadian accent can be. living here in vegas 4 years i missed it. i remember that show. also the one where the kids call into santa during the christmas season. memories...
Peterpan was on YTV, but it was when we were very young. It showed in the mornings, because in the mornings, they showed programs that were suited for younger audiences. Such as Big Comfy Couch, Peter Pan, and more....
dammm I remember Phil.I also remember saying "Where did Phil go?!?".The zone was sooo much better back in the day.The shows were way better and they seem more mature then the kid shows of today.
Wow, I remember watching the very last segment with phil. It was a sad afternoon for everyone. I never saw anything this far back though, i was only 2 years old at the time..
they had Doctor who? i don't even remember that. This is awesome. I can'beleive somone kept a tape of this for 7 years. kudos to your uncommon foresight.
I used to mix up Phil and Paul up all the time! the PJs were the best! This is the first time I've ever seen someone explain TV schedules to the audience without making us look like babies! YTV pwns TVO!!!
My God man, this was my child hood...well going in to my teen years... FUCKIN LOVED THIS SHIT! PJ Phil was always awesome. He was always so entertaining and cool.
ahhhh back when you actually had to WRITE a letter to the zone instead of typing an email...i remember after pj phil it was that white guy, then jennie, then paul, then jennie left, then sugar came, then paul left then carlos came. i think theres another chick on now too...man ytv reminds me how old im getting...
haha, couldn't figure out the reference from the other ppl's comments but now you mention it, i think i do remember haha. such were the good ol' days... that phrase makes me feel much older than i am. lol.
Oh my geez, this is so old. I remember watching YTV like this when I was 7 years old and it sure was alot better than YTV today. At least The Zone in the 90's wasn't as stupid and corky as The Zone today.
oooh man!! Lol ytv in 1994... hm, I defs watched Power rangers back then!! Ahh to be 5 again. lol. ..Woah, I never knew they used to have doctor who on YTV!! Damn, I missed the best ytv days T_T (love the new series)
this is so pimp, i miss the PJ days. i used to write to them cuz it was my goal and dream to have my letter read and artwork shown to the camera. i thought it would have been the coolest thing ever! i got a cool postcard from them though. PJ Aashna was my fave
Wow, I loved the Zone abck then, I remmebr when PPhil played his guitar one day, I think he was playing and singing I wanna fly away by Lenny kravitz. I also remember them having a series of creepy advertisements before Halloween... good times.
I would always see the YTV logo on shows like the Zack Files, which was Canadian. I had no idea it was some awesome network like Kids WB. I wish I could have watched this stuff as a kid.
Oh man, this is ridiculous. I remember these YTV personalities being a lot older than this. I think he was only about 22 in this clip. Though he looks like he could be 18 or 19. Anyway, thanks for the memories.
I had a pink power rangers doll! My sister had the yellow one! WOOT! We used to play power rangers with the little boys next door and across the street every day until one day the one across the street got too excited and hit my sister in the face with a piece of 2" wooden dowell. LOL! Then we weren't allowed to play with him anymore...
I met pj Katie and Phil like 18 years ago. They came to my town and were signing autographs at wal mart. Lol One of my oldest memories, it was pretty awesome.
