I remember when I convinced my dad to take me to see the Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie. When we got our tickets, the lady behind the counter was so disinterested and said "I suppose you want some cards" as if I was going to harass her for them and just handed me 4 sealed cards. On the car ride home I open them and discover that she gave me all 4 exclusive cards. Blue Eyes Shining Dragon, Sorcerer of Dark Magic, Watapon and Pyramid of Light. I never got to thank that disinterested lady.
The movie came out around 2004 so I was 12. I'm pretty sure I've still got them somewhere amongst my old cards. I never would have traded them...maybe except for Watapon.
@@GreenDinoRanger that's great to see. Look since I'm a collector myself I need some help. On TGS anime's video dedicated to Sorceror of Dark Magic at 1:27 I saw a magician I've never seen before second from right on the bottom (in red and white stripes) can you help identify it for me?
@@LegionUK Yes, but he likely side decked it when he gave away the way you summon it making it pointless... and then knowing joey loved time wizard subbed it back in knowing it likely wouldn’t be useless anymore.
@@MrBoboiscool Stil not a side deck monster, he left it out of his main deck and if he didnt place it back in before said duel it couldnt be used, you're right but its still not a side deck monster
I have a fun fact too, dark magician was called the "dark knight" in the arabic version, because magic is a touchy subject in here. we never noticed that something was off as kids but when i grow older i noticed he looked nothing like a knight supposed to look like, but it was till i learned English and i found out his real name was "dark magician" and everything made since outta sudden 😂😂
@@Rahul_Sastry bruh, according to islam judiasm and chiristanty, witchcraft and anything dealing with magic forces is extreamly forbiden, only thing that are related to your religon, for example for all 3 (for what i know, maby even non of them) horoscope, trying to see the future with the stars, is considered such force, in hebrew we call it "star worshiping" (or "star working"), BUT im not sure but i think we have a way to use the starts to try and forsee the future in the talmod through the religon so it wont be a sin. in islamist countrys they take it SO FAR sometimes, that they consider pokemons demons, and owening a game can get u arrested, happened not once check on google. not a rabbi or something like that so dont catch me on the word.
15:55 I'm pretty sure that this scene was designed to show that Yugi gave up a combo that he had initially planned on using in order to help Joey. That sacrifice had caused him to play around having a broken combo/unusable card in his deck which never stopped him thus showing once again why he was king of games.
i like that the Dark sage can be summoned by time magician it kind of explains why Yugi even had that in his deck to begin with as he doesn't use baby dragon + it shows how much of a big friend he is giving Joye one of his best cards in this case as he cant use Dark sage anymore as he doesn't have his Magician of time anymore
@@OTheDetective really yeah the chances of the effect going off on dark magician specifically are there but it was luck. and that time luck favored yugi
I still have my original Dark Magician. My buddy bought the Seto Kiba starter deck and I had never heard of yugioh before so we went to the store and I got the original Yugi starter deck since by friend already had the kiba one. I love that card. It's been years since I quit playing and I have gotten rid of most of my cards, but I still have that one and I'll probably hold onto it forever.
I remember I was 8 when the movie came out. They gave my dad and I each a card and I was so excited i got Blue eyes shining dragon but my dad got Watapon lol
I like the thought of the dark magician set being a tale of the dark magicians life. It starts as card flipper, a youth with an aptitude for magic. So he’s taken on as an apprentice and with his talent for magic he becomes the skilled dark magician. As he completes his training he becomes a dark magician. Through his life his exploits in magic get him a knighthood where, when fighting for the kingdom, he’s known as the dark knight. One day he happened on, and tamed a dragon hence the dark magician the dragon knight. As he became an adult, through his losses (his friend becoming a cursed archfiend) and his gains (a dedicated apprentice and his friends buster blader and Gaia as well as a great dragon) he becomes the magician of black chaos. After being alive for years and his mastery of magic he becomes known as a sage. He passed on and left his legacy to his student and became a legendary magician who could never be bested.
Given how the Shenanigans worked in Yu-Gi-Oh DM, I think it's safe to say that Yugi didn't have Dark Sage in his side deck. I don't even think that there is a side or extra deck in the anime as the holographic technology makes the changes automatically, and I've never seen anyone place cards on the field due to an effect.
This card brings back a lot of memories, he's actually my most favorite card of all the Yugioh series, back when I was playing the game years ago, I was always sad that there wasn't a lot of support for him, and eventually, I quit playing yugioh about 2013 or 2014, so it's nice to see new cards for Dark Magician! The best card in the world!
10:56 as another small note of trivia, each of the four skilled magicians are a reference to Final Fantasy, as the four most prevelent types of mages in those games are named after the same colors. Black Mages for their offense spell, white mages for supportive and healing, Red Mages for versatility as they can learn all types of normal magic as well as fight hand to hand, and blue for the use of learning monsters spells. Idk, I didn’t see it mentioned elsewhere and thought it made sense
A year late but just because a card supports a specific monster doesn't mean said monster becomes an archetype. Thousand Knives says If you control 'Dark Magician' while Eye of Timaeus says Target 1 'Dark Magician' MONSTER, not just DM specifically.
I actually really liked the looseness of season one. I don't really like playing card games, and it made the whole concept more interesting and real for things to interact in weird organic ways.
I can't believe how much attention to detail went to palladium oracle mahad's effect, i mean the backstory and the artwork is just... damn this is the perfect card game
"Perfect card game" *for a deck to be viable it's boss has to have 50 negates, be unaffected and indestructible by everything, and can nuke the field 5 times a turn."
I swear yugi has about 100 cards in his deck . he uses his magicians magic to make it appear as he has 40-60 cards in his deck when he really has 100-150 cards 😂😂
Amulet dragon having enochian could have another reason: It's the language of atlantis in the anime. That would explain why it's on amulet dragon and the seal of orichalchos, as both Dartz, the main antagonist of season 4 and the legendary dragons/knights originated in atlantis
I don't think those hieroglyphs are referencing that relationship, Jacob. If anything, It references what little doubt Timeus has for Atem. After all Atem did play the Seal of Orichalcos despite yugi and Timeus being greatly against it and Timeus saw Atem playing the Seal of Orichalcos as an act of betrayal. Timeus still had some doubts about Atem even after hearing Atem's heartfelt apologies and agreeing to help Atem again. as powerful as Amulet Dragon maybe, it's just a retrained version of Dark Magician the Dragon Knight.
Actually, Dark Magician the Dragon Knight is the retrained version, as Amulet Dragon was the one that appeared in the anime and was released first. And I admit that both theories have strong ground to stand on, but the only way to truly know for certain would be if Konami themselves told us, which probably won't happen
There's no doubt about, Jacob, but appearance-wise Amulet dragon looks like slightly incomplete fusion compared to Dark Magician the Dragon Knight, but don't get me wrong, Amulet dragon is strong in it's own right.
@@jakeblancaster8498 I agree with Jacob more because its made clear in the anime that both are fighting a war that started in Atlantis and the letters on the dragon originate from Atlantis
Fun fact to this years old video. The Japanese that he brings up basically just means Dark Magician. Imagine a Japanese person trying to say Dark magician in English but they have a super thick accent. That’s how you pronounce that.
I was actually about to comment that. The text that isn't contained is just Dark Magician written in Katakana, but the cards themselves read Kuro Majitsushi, which is just Black/Dark Magician in Japanese.
Yesterday: Rata does an Archetype Archive on Blue Eyes Today: TGS does a Yugioh Trivia on Dark Magician I'm not saying that's suspect af, but it's suspect af- *shot*
Kaibaman isn't really an anime character. It's a monster created by an anime character based on himself lol... and yes I realize this comment is a year old but oh well
I wish they could agree on a standard coloring for Dark Magician. Half the cards feature him as Anime Purple (my favorite) and the other half feature him as Manga Blue and Red. I would also appreciate some lore for the Arkana’s Red Dark Magician.
I like to think of the Mahad-Dark Magician and the Arkana-Magician as two different men. Arkana grows up to be The Black Executioner and Mahad grows up to be Sorcerer
They've even got some lore with the dimension Dragons, and timegazer eventually becoming Nirvana High Paladin. The pulse of the dragon (something ONLY talked about on Dragonpulse's card) could be another thing to talk about
Love the passion, thoroughness and attention to detail you bring to your work! Can really tell that you take the time to put together high-quality videos.
Tbh if time wizard was in yugi’s deck to begin with it’s safe to say that yugi had already had this strategy long before he met joey so technically it was never planned this way it was just an unfortunate convenience for joey
There actually was one match winner card that was legal for a while, Victory Dragon. It's banned now, but when it was legal there was a ruling made that you weren't allowed to surrender to avoid its effect.
I pulled a sorcerer of dark magic when I went to see the movie, best day of my childhood lol It's still a beautiful looking card in terms of the artwork, second only to the original dark magician
Did you know that I gain 300 Attack points for every "Dark Magician" and "Magician of Black Chaos" in both players graveyards? I even helped Yami Yugi defeat Pandora using this awesome effect! Being the Dark Magicians faithful apprentice sure is a lot of fun!
I call shenanigans nor because he used Dark Sage but because he summoned it. It specifically states in order to be summoned, you have to call the coin toss for Time Wizard.
I've noticed that Dark Magicians have a focus on Xyz monsters, Red Eyes on Fusions, and Blue Eyes on Synchros. They all have Fusions and Rituals, but they prioritize those summoning methods.
As a Dark Magician collector, it was great to see someone finally making a list of every Dark Magician Card. Considering every other incarnation is in here, I am surprised Apprentice Illusion Magician isn't in this though, and I think Diffusion Wave Motion is begging to be called a Dark Magician card and you mentioned it earlier in the video but not in the spells list.
The Yu-Gi-Oh! movie story always resonates with me because I feel like I got the shaft in a slightly different way. My cousin and I were planning on seeing the movie, which he had already seen but no one could take us for awhile. I was 11 and he was 12 and our grandma was the one who ended up taking us but by the time we were all ready to go it had left the theater. I was so mad about this and I actually somehow managed to get one of the promo cards from the film...which was also Watapon.
I have all those cards! I found my collection when cleaning my attic. Lol... brings back some good memories when i was younger. I have the signature series for the Gods also.
Honestly I think its shengians as in the sense that yugioh didnt take damage but dark Sage was probably a just in case as he wasn't expecting time wizard but knew it might happen.
Time Wizard only does damage if the player that used its effect calls the coin toss wrong, then it damages them. If they call it right, it just destroys the opponents monster.
As someone who is very interested in overall lore, be it anime, movie, or manga, this was a real treat. This, along with BEWD, get me smiling from ear to ear whenever I see any cameo past the original series (along with his apprentice of course!). The artwork in general is pretty neat, but I will always love the original purple depiction. Also, I had not linked every protag's ace card having the same attack/defense (still working through 5Ds at the moment).
Still no barrel dragon 😢 Not even a bandit Keith trivia. Someday barrel dragon will be in the spotlight. Do me a favor Sam and show my boi some love. Edit: p.s keep up the good work man.
Well Yugi did have time wizard so he could have had the card for it in the rare moments he needs it and since he knew Joey had time wizard he knew he had to put his counter card in.
I know your pain. I had something similar happen for a game called Cardfight Vanguard. Back in 2015 I was at a sneak preview event for a new booster and after the tournament I went to the counter to get another kit, there was one particular card in this set I really wanted for my deck and it just so happened to be the most valuable. A friend of my cut ahead of me in line, I didn't say anything cause I'm super laid back and he was handed the packs I would have gotten had I kept my place in line....he pulled Chronodragon Nextage...the one card I wanted most, and I will never let it go
In regards to Amulet Dragon having the letters found on the Seal of Orichalcos on it, remember that Atem used the Seal of Orichalcos out of desperation in his first duel against Raphael. After Atem cleansed himself of that taint, Timaeus must've been able to purify the leftover power of the Orichalcos with the help of Dark Magician and used it to make itself stronger.
6:37 blew my mind because I didn't even know that backstory of the OG Dark magician, but the character design alone led me to think that In my head. You then confirmed it and 💥BOOM💥, mind blown.
When it comes to the time wizard and dark sage thing, since yugi had the time wizard in the first place, it’s probable that he was going to use the dark sage with the time wizard. giving it to joey farce him not to use the combo for the tournament, and decided to spec it back in in the finals. while it was kinda shenanigans, it did make cards in yugi’s sub deck virtually useless and one less than usual
Fun fact: I went to the pyramid of light movie as a kid with my mom and brother, he got the great Sphinx my mom got watapon and I got the magician, instantly traded for shining dragon
I always assumed Magician of Black Chaos was either an evolution the dark magician would eventually take OR I though he would be like the Dark Magician's master of sorts; maybe someone like Mace Windu from star wars; this very skilled and genius sorcerer who was able to master both light and dark magic (Hence the Chaos in his title) so he'd be someone to look up to by other mages. And some of the higher magicians would be some council.
Magician of Black Chaos _is_ the Dark Magician. Within the lore of the franchise, a ritual using the power of chaos transforms him into his chaos form. The same is applied to Gaia the Fierce Knight becoming Black Luster Soldier (Chaos Soldier). It is also referenced in the Ritual Spell "Chaos Form" which supports both monsters as well as Gaia the Fierce Knight monsters being support cards for the BLS archetype.
teah yugi has like 4 or five decks they have had some competetive win people think of yugi just think of dark magician as his only monster 4 or 5 decks thats a understatement dude has to much support nowadays
I had the red Dark Magician years ago when I first made my deck as a child. It was a rare one too and unfortunately I didn't know it could've been incredibly valuable. I think you could guess what happened to it.
15:17 well the dark sage explains why yugi had the time wizard to begin with. probably he thought "i have only summoned dark sage once, so yeah time wizard isn't that useful for me" so he gave it to joey
@@conspiracycornerpodcast4302 doubt it. and even then, what were the chances of having dark amgician and time wizard at the same time in the field? for all yug knows he might have had won the duel before that happening
@@ianr.navahuber2195 Eh, season 1 Atem was kind of a dick. He would have let Kaiba die if Yugi didn't stop him. I can see hom setting up Joey. Of course, in reality, it was nothing to do with that and just jank Duelist Kingdom nonsense.
I love dark sage as it is a magician who mastered magic and allows it's owner to make use of magic cards on both your own turn as well as the opponent's turn.(well at least in the episode of the anime that he mentions in this video where Yami Yugi and Joey Wheeler were fighting each other)
Iv always liked the Dark Magcian, and he was my favorite monster until like a few years ago thanks. Then he got dethroned by Blue. Always loved the first artwork of him. Too bad I didnt get a verison like that until I got world championship 2009. Man I miss yugioh video games.
In GX, Flame Wingman started as Jaden's ace and later, it was said to be Shining Flare Wingman. After he got Neos, it was then set in stone though Flame Wingman did still get some notable screen time afterwards. With regards to 5D's, Yusei used Junk Warrior a LOT but that's because of how reliable the card itself was. In that respect, it's like Jaden's use of Flame Wingman when Neos is still around. It's a way to save the bigger guns for later whilst showing off your A-Game.
