Whose opening move is to discard his entire hand...lucky he didn't open with any monsters. Oh who am I kidding? You need an astronomical amount of luck to use Guardians to begin with...
@@aliastheabnormalMy headcanon is that he can just mentally ask his monsters to move around in the deck with their bond so… make of that what you will. Regardless, there’s no doubt that nobody IRL could replicate this without absurd luck or literal cheating.
Rafael to this day remains one of the most iconic characters in the series. Tragic backstory, fantastic player, wonderful arc, and of course the first to beat the pharaoh in a fair duel
If only his archetype was playable and related to his backstory. An archetype related to having no monster in the grave would have been cool. Nowaday only eatos is actually related to it
I've always liked the whole gimmick of them basically sharing their weapons with each other before they get on the field so you have more than one monster with the same effect
Part of me always wondered what the Inspiration behind the Guardians was. Their designs seem almost random with a Lizard Monster, a Mermaid, Various warriors and Eatos who has a Native American inspired design.
I don’t know if we’ll ever get Guardian support in the future, outside of maybe the remaining anime cards being printed in Animation Chronicle packs, but I wouldn’t be against them getting a support wave like Gate Guardian got earlier this year.
I honestly love this archetype. I'm so glad it's finally getting attention... Edit: this maybe a little for me to be saying this, but am I the only one thinking that Celestial Sword - Eatos should've been treated as a Valkyrie Card, and not a Noble Arms?
I think many people would love a retrain of these cards along with the cards in the anime. Maybe even make a guardian card that represents Raphael. Ishizu got a retrain so hopefully we get some cool Guardian monsters and support cards.
They should really get versions where you can Special Summon them by showing their appropiate Equip Spell in your hand and then forcefully equipping that Equip Spell immediately (though, all Equips will either also need to be retrained, or Elma needs a new one. They could make Guardian Shield the new Elma Equip Spell since it's the only other Equip Spell Raphael uses and it was equipped to Elma). And then drawing 1 card upon Summoning them in that specific way, to make up for having used 2 cards at once, and it's in the spirit of Guardian Treasure.
I always loved the flavor of the three guardians he interacts with 1. Baou corrupts him and turns him dark 2. Tryce empowers him and turns him light 3. Grarl rejects him because grepher is already earth meaning even with the axe his path won’t really change
it'd be dope to see grepher actually going through each guardian besides grarl and does like similar effects to the equips and at the end of mastering them he finally is accepted by grarl who because they are already the same attribute resonate more together, making Guardian Dai Grepher, Master of Arms essentially seeing him being able to wield multiple guardians at once.
Also it'd be cool if they had a field spell that allows you to swap the equip target for the spells, and discard an equip spell to search for a guardian monster Oh another cool idea is make Celtics guardian have grarl and the other grephers from the other guardian timelines have to team up to take down the Dark Grepher timeline it'd be a cool storyline with cameos from updated vanilla monsters with "Guardian" in their name all using a Guardian weapon at some point or becoming an equip spell themselves oh you could also have an updated sword hunter and armed samurai Ben Kai cause they are equip heavy cards and Maha vailo already got an update
Actually, just making it so the field spell makes it so you can, for example, Reveal 1 Equip Spell or "Guardian" Monster in your hand, and grab the corresponding card from your Deck (HOPT, obviously), and then allowing you to Special Summon the Guardians under the previous conditions would be a grand thing for the archetype.
@@JR384 magic has a keyword called living weapon. lore-wise it's because the phyrexians (bad guys) experimented with modifying weapons to work on their own, this is reflected in the keyword creating a 0/0 germ token and attaching the equipment to it I mention this because it would be good if the guardians could also have something similar, a token that is created to get the equip spell on the board, then after moving the equip spell to the guardian the token dies. it means you don's have to give your opponent any effects and can give the guardian their respective weapon
{Insert name of Field Spell here} Once per turn, you can reveal 1 Equip Spell, or 1 "Guardian" Monster in your hand, to add 1 Equip Spell that lists "Guardian" in it's card text, or 1 "Guardian" Monster from your Deck or GY to your hand. As long as this card is on the field, "Guardian" Monster's can be normal summoned (from your hand), or special summoned by other card effects without their corresponding equip spell being on the field. If they are, you can add an Equip Spell card (from the deck, GY, or is banished) that list that monster's name in its card text to your hand. "Guardian" monster's equipped with an equipped spell card that list their name in it's card text, cannot be sent to the GY, or be Banished.
Idea to make the general game loop of the guardians easier: _Noble Arms Arsenal Summoner_ Level 4 Spellcaster/Flip/Effect (This card is always also treated as a “Guardian” and “Noble Knight” card.) _FLIP: Add 1 “Guardian” or “Noble” card or Equip Spell to your hand (From your deck or GY)._ _While this face-up card is in the field, Your opponent cannot target Equip Spells you control for card effects, and if an equip spell you control would be sent to the GY, it returns to your hand instead. Cards returned to your hand by this effect are negated for the rest of the turn. Once per turn (Quick Effect): You can apply 1 of the following effects, then flip this card facedown:_ ⚪️Target 1 monster you control, then add 1 Equip Spell to your hand (From your field, Deck or GY) who’s name is mentioned in it’s effects. ⚪️Target 1 monster you control: Until the end phase, If that target would be targeted for an attack or opponents card effect; Special Summon 1 “Guardian” or “Noble” monster (From your hand or deck), ignoring its summoning conditions, then change the target to that summoned monster. ⚪️Target 1 Equip Spell you control, then add 1 Monster to your hand (From your field, Deck or GY) who’s name is mentioned in it’s effects. ATK/1600 DEF/1600
Fun fact: Guardian Baou and Flameberge were two of the cards in my first ever pack opening. And to this day, Baou has been one of my favorite monsters of all time, mainly due to Nostalgia. Also, I had zero clue about YuGiOh Lore, so Baou was just a cool card to me, not this soul possessing sword.
Oh my God i love Guardians.I know they are terrible in real life, but I still adore them. Eatos is my favorite card in the whole game.I can't wait for Backup Gardna and Crystal Seal. I really like how Rafael loved those cards, looked after them and protect them.
Fun fact about Arsenal summoner: In German, its effect excludes the entire Gravekeeper archetype. If there is going to be a Gravekeeper's Guardian one day, it would have to be explicitly included again. All because the German translation team settled for "Grabwächter" rather than "Grabhüter".
Guardian much like Charmers, we're a set of cards that never intended to have any sort of synergy with each other. As in, Konami never expected you to build a deck around them. Yet, we're turned into an archetype by very specific support cards. While Charmers are more well known by their link forms and channeler forms. Guardian is only known for 1 useful monster and various equips used in other specific decks except Guardians.
That would be a nice theory if they didn't also make *Arsenal Summoner* in the same set they debuted in. Therefore, they are given archetypal synergy, but they bungled it with the localization of other cards haphazardly labeled "Guardian."
@@D-HavocWould have been the funniest Frog the Jam clause of all time had a whole lineup of Guardian supporters showed up early. We’d have been much more inclined to go “Slime Toad” sooner knowing any keyword from here could be retroactively used for a theme.
If ishizu who never won a duel in show can get meta defining card retrains then the archtype that beat the pharaoh fair and square should be given at least something
one of my favourite anime archetypes and one of my favourite villains. actually a sympathetic backstory and he beat yugi fair and square, which makes it all the more impressive. unlike most other villains I didn't root against this guy, I just respected him. one of those guys you hope gets a redemption arc in the end^^
I remember the card ‘Fairy Guardian’. I always had a soft spot for this card and thought it would be cool for it to get some love with this archetype. This archetype is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me, thanks for the video!
A decent idea I have for a support card : It searches the monster and spell that is listed in it's card text. It's have a hard once per turn. I'm thinking it's effect would read like this, "Add a "Guardian" monster to your hand and if you do add an equip spell card that is listed in the monster's card text." It should also have some protection so it's not vulnerable like maybe a once per turn destruction immunity and maybe targeting protection if there is a "Guardian" monster on the field.
Rod of Silence - Kay’est was part of a degenerate combo with Power Tool Braver Dragon, which could equip it and Smoke Grenade of the Thief, which would pop the smoke grenade upon resolution of the dragon’s effect.
Honestly, I loved the Guardian cards as a kid, and i tried to get them all. naturally i pulled almost none of the super rares or anything like that. then i got a bit older and realized "wow they are cool man do they suck" so yeah i'd love for them to come back with new effects and actual play ability!
Actually I'm pretty sure that it was the same freak storm that killed Mako Tsunamis father as well. Also the art of gravity leash is dragon ball Easter egg when yam ha tried to use Vegetas gravity training it's the exact same pose! The more you know.
Despite using Power of the Guardians in Duel Links often in event farming decks, I never realized until now that it's related to the Guardian archetype.
Okay so I did a tiny bit of thinking about how I'd retrain these, and here are some of my thoughts. 1. Nix the archetypal effect, replace it with something like not being able to activate effects or attack if they aren't equipped with their respective equip (except for the one's that don't have that effect), we'll buff the effects so that when they're equipped with their matching spell they can be useful, and try to make them somewhat fit (perhaps a negate of Kay'est, position change on Gral, etc.) 2. Make it easier to search and equip spells, maybe make a version of Backup Gardna (in archetype obvs) that can like reveal one half of the pair and search the other, something like that 3. Require or get bonus effects from a graveyard with no "guardian" monsters in it, no monsters at all is a bit strict and kills most hand traps. 4. Allow for recycling of the equips and new spell/traps, since we have some discards we can add more, this will also let us play other cards that actually want to be in the grave while keeping our GY "Guardian" monster free 5. Create a Field spell, working name: Seal of the Guardians, boost attack of all Guardians by 500, probably search on activation and maybe help to summon once per turn. 6. Consider putting a Eatos retrain in the ED, using only Guardians as material and shuffling them back, consider making her banish cards face down given how many cards like being banished normally.
The archetype could be great of backup guardna was renamed backup guardian, and the negate attack was restricted to guardian equip spells. Also if they got a field spell that ignored their summon and Special summoned them and tutored the equips from deck/gy, and they got contact fusion retrains that fused with the named monster and equip, and had quick effects related to them and they got a rota from gy/deck that added an equip and the named grain from gy/deck.
Guardians?! The only archetype that absolutely clapped Atem?? Surely it must be very strong IRL. If not currently, for sure at its release in Goat format. It even has a banned card??
They made cards for Gate Guardian, which is a 4-card "archetype". Recently they release the Yubel cards for a once 3-card archetype. If they don't make new Guardian cards, it will be very weird.
guardians really need something like a preparation of rites, and maybe it could create a token to attach the equip spell to or we could go balls deep and make a field spell that makes them like magic's equipment, staying on the board until removed by card effect and have an equip cost
This archetype was such a tragedy. I wanted to like this group of monsters, but the problem was the means to summon them. As you needed a specific Equip Spell Card face-up on the field in order to summon them. Meaning, you needed another monster on the field, it doesn't matter if it's on you side or your opponent's side of the field, but you also need that Spell Card equipped, let's say Gravity Axe - Grarl, in order to summon Guardian Grarl. So in order words, if you, hypothetically, managed to get both card required to summon one Guardian Monster, you would need a minimum of 2 turns to summon them normally. And this not including the possibility of the other monster not getting destroyed during your opponent's turn, and with using a card like Double Summon. The worst part about all this is, for reasons that utterly baffle me, the key monster that was needed to make this deck work isn't available in the OCG and TCG. And that card was Backup Gardna. It's ability to wield an Equip Spell Card and then unequip the card to equip to another monster was highly beneficial. Combined that with a high defense of 2200, and it being a Level 4 Monster, making it very easy to summon, and it's not going down without a properly defending itself.
Mechanically, they probably should have been reversed, with the equip spells being unusable unless the guardian is on the field, maybe even letting you search the equip when you summon the guardian.
@@MrShukaku1991 And to add more to the Guardian Archetype, have the monsters with Guardian in their names be part of the Guardian Archetype. Never understood why Celtic Guardian, Winged Dragon Guardian of the Fortress 1 and 2, and the others aren't treated as part of the archetype.
@@OmnicidalClown1992Because having "Guardian" in their name is tcg only. They aren't "Guardian"s from their Japanese names. Celtic Guardian for example is Elf Swordsman in the ocg
Fun fact :Bao is a caracter in yu gi oh GX he apared as one of the supreme King minions, once the supreme king was defeated, he tried to take advantage of the weak state of Jaden to kill him, but he failed since Jaden still had the fight spirit in him.
I would love to see support for the deck, specially because guardian eatos is my favorite card to the point that i used to play it in any deck that i could make it work, i even make a fun deck with her dreadscyth by using spirits to go into rank 4s, but yeah even with support the deck at least could achive fun statues, because just like you sad it need a good field spell and probably a retrain of every one of the monsters maybe even a new eatos and dreadscyth for the boss monsters, and making then have a summons effect that by revealing they corresponding equip you can special summons them from the hand, a field spell that onces pero turn adds either the monster or the equip or the ability to re equip equip spells, maybe a universal equip that counts as any of the other equips, and with a game style of not letting your monsters go yo the graveyard, and once eatos dies having a new dreadscyth that auto summons it's self from the deck and while eatos remains on the graveyard it will keep summoning it's self and re equiping it's equip cards form anywhere, but with the draw backs of nuking your field every time it returns, not allowing you to summon anything and only being able to equip one scyth and also having the ability yo return all banish cards to the graveyard. As for the new eatos it could have the effects of being able to special summons it's self by having no monster on the graveyard or by revealing her equip spells, then once pero turn she can banish up to 3 monsters from the graveyard and once pero turn quick effect she can target on banish monster and for the rest of the turn neither player can actívate effects form monsters that have the same name of the banish one and finally she would gain 300 atk for every banish monster.
I actually run guardian eatos with a combo of blue eyes and cyber dragon. You can use future fusion to rapidly dump cards into the grave for your 3 card fusions and when you are ready you can even use eatos as a tribute to force out dreadscythe. Also drawing cyber dragon and eatos on your opening turn is amazing if you are going second.
I actually had to look into this, and I'm not entirely sure if Skyrim Oblivion was the first to do this or its the other way around since Developments were roughly around the same time. So I'll put it like this "Baou is similar to how Umbra works" as they both take hold of their host.
I loved these cards! Such a fun idea, plus as a Magic player I have a fondness for janky stuff (auras work like equip spells). I tried to make a Guardian deck on Master Duel but unfortunately it was very bad. In my experience, the worst part was honestly that Eatos and Dreadscythe don't really work great together specifically because of the summon requirements. Eatos is fine on her own, a little odd but fine enough. Dreadscythe however is very much a difficult card to use since it requires Eatos but also has the issue of needing to be in the hand to get that summon. In my opinion, it'd be a lot better with just three things: Backup Guardna is a must have, it just kinda needs to be there. Dreadscythe's summon also being possible if Eatos is in the graveyard. And something to better enable either Eatos or Dreadscythe to actually win (preferably both) like a spell/trap with an effect that puts any number of Guardian monsters into your graveyard (Dreadscythe) or banish monsters on the field (Eatos) but require the respective monster to activate. Even with that, I think it'd just be a janky anime deck
main difference being auras can only be attached to your permanent unless stated otherwise. I remember the first time I used skull clamp and tried to attach it to my opponent's token, learned REAL quick there are big differences between the games
@@Sillimant_ Skullclamp is an equipment, not an aura. The difference here is that you can only *equip* things to creatures you control unless otherwise stated, however Auras can go on anything most of the time. Normally, an aura reads: enchant creature. This is basically just "enchant target creature" but I believe isn't technically targeted. This is why enchantments like Stasis Field are helpful. Equipment are honestly better than auras in my opinion since you can reuse them but some aura focused stuff can be downright busted! I'm looking at Calix...
I've gotten some decent use of Guarded Treasure in one version of my exodia deck. It's situational though since sometimes I need everything I have in my hand. But, if I can get it off early and just drop some stall stuff that I don't need right then, it adds up quickly.
Power of The Guardians has already both saved & destroyed me in a few Duel Links duels. I didn't realize it was part of this archetype. which means Rafael might have some really obnoxiously powered decks at higher levels once he's finally implemented into the game. although I still look forward to getting each arc's characters added into the game :)
@@Sillimant_ I've only been playing for about a week so I don't own many cards that can do that kinda thing yet. & I don't own share the pain yet either.
Rafael has always been one of my favorite Yugioh characters. To this day his first match with Atem is one of my personal favorite duels. One other tragic thing about Rafael, is that after he was rescued, his surviving relatives took his dad’s inheritance and wanted nothing to do with him (It’s extremely likely that Rafael’s relatives abandoned him out of greed). On top of that everyone wanted to befriend him so they could have his fortune. This made him feel even more isolated than when he was on the island. As a result he had no friends (presumably until Dartz Valon and Alister came) and only appeared in public when dueling as everyone wanted to take advantage of him. He has such a tragic and powerful story. This makes me love Guardian Eatos even more as Rafael likely does view her as his surrogate mother. What I wouldn’t give to see a rematch between Atem and Rafael, not as enemies, but as friends. Plus I would love to see more of his deck as he was only featured in 2 duels (not counting Mai’s since it was basically offscreen). The only cards that wouldn’t be in his deck would be Guardian Dreadscythe and the Seal of Orichalcos due to his bad experience with the cards. Lastly what burns me up about the Gaurdian Archetype is that Backup Gardna hasn’t been made into a real card (Seriously why not?! It would make the cards immensely easier to summon) and the way Konami drastically reduced Guardian Eatos’s power. Maybe Konami was afraid it would make her way too powerful, but still, if that’s the case just ban it then. Aside from those two complaints I love Rafael and his Guardian Archetype. Loved this video TGS, it’s a masterpiece. 😇😇😇
I swear that Guardian Eatos and Guardian Dreadscythe got released later after Dark Crisis, I think it was the XYZ era that they got released or maybe reprinted because I remember having a Guardian Kay'est as a kid during the 2000s and then during the XYZ era I got both Guardian Eatos and Guardian Dreadscythe and Dreadscythe's equip spell.
You can play a Guardian deck due to all the monster cards that came before them having Guardian in their name could be the equip targets of the summoning conditions and keeping several copies of Tailor of the Fickle can help shift the equip cards around
I would love the Guardians to get a few new cards and re-trains. A field spell that negates the Equip spell summoning mechanic(call it Island of the Guardians) and Backup Gardna would speed up this archetype, plus a spell or trap that negates graveyard effects like Necrovalley would be good as well.
Celestial Sword Eatos embodies my frustration with Yu-Gi-Oh's edge case rulings. A simple "When" instead of an "If" ruins an entire card, because of the mistiming ruling. Why is that even a thing in the first place?
The funny thing about Noble Knight and Noble Arms is that because they were TCG exclusive the OCG retroactively forced cards that were never meant to be connected to them into the archetype by choosing to name them "Holy Knight" and "Holy Sword" instead of choosing to translate the archetype as it was. I can only assume that the Japanese staff simply wanted to mess with the TCG.
Guardians were easily one of my favorite original series archetypes and i want them to have viable support more then probably any other currently existing archetype.
Fun fact: Arsenal Summoner can also grab Gate Guardian. Also I would love to see them get new support. And if Gate Guardian can get support so can them.
I would love it if you were to do the, Atlanteans, Phantasm spiral dragon, Mermail, IceJade, Worms, Aliens, Allies of justice, Mutants Archetypes next as those are ones with great lore i think and i havent seen you cover yet
Guardians could've just gotten retrains, like Ishizu monsters and Dagger Elma could get an errata that gives her hard or even soft once per turn. Let's say, you can special summon them from the Deck if their corresponding weapon is on the field and if they are equipped with them, they gain an additional effect, manipulating the graveyard (banish monsters in opponent's graveyard until they'll have the same number as you, negate both sides' GY effects for a turn, both sides can't special summon from the GY this turn etc.)
