The tail end of Game 1 where Joseph had multiple outs, completely wiping out Cimos board yet Cimo was still able to assemble lethal through it all was simply absurd. What a deck
9:20 "There will be a light at the end of the Tunnel" Can anyone lead Gage to said light, I think he might need help finding it after the last 2 months of Prog
@@cameraredeye3115 I think a smart ban would be Mystic Tomato actually Gage has only 1 while Cimo has 3, Cimo has good stuff that floats into it like Newdoria, cards that play around it like creature swap and other recruiters and quiet frankly, it will deal more dmg to Cimos chaos recruiter deck than it does to Gage
Dragon Rulers show that a Tier 0 or near Tier 0 format can have an enjoyable level of diversity or interactivity. (Zoodiac does the same. Not so much Dark Armed Dragon or Tele-DAD formats.)
I second this. So many great decks we won#t get to see here. OCG Synchro Cat. Kin-Tele-Undead, triple Trishula Infernity, 3-Axis Fire Fist, Dark Matter Hieratics, Clownbalde, PePe with Shock Master and Azatoth etc.
history of duel links, other games, etc. would be cool too, by the point this series ends and the ocg series ends, master duel would be an entire historic format itself, so like there would be a solid 20+ episodes of that
Lots of nostalgia here for me. After dropping out of regularly playing Yugioh sometime early-mid 5D's, I made a proper stab at competitive/regular play late 2013 and early-mid 2014, as I entered uni. 4-Axis Fire Fist was MY deck. Loved it, played it repeatedly, had a blast. Such fond memories of playing around this time and interacting with the 'group' at uni. I would however fall off Yugioh around the time of Secrets of Eternity and go balls-deep into MTG instead, however. But I'll enjoy riding the nostalgia wave for the next few episodes.
Secrets of Eternity was released in January 2015. This set introduced the Infernoids, a series of monsters that can Special Summon themselves to the field by banishing other Infernoids from either the hand or graveyard. Notable cards in set include Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, Qliphort Monolith, Uni-Zombie, Nephe Shaddoll Fusion, and a card that would bolster Satellarknight to combat the Burning Abyss Shaddoll meta, Stellarknight Constellar Diamond. In this series, both Nyhmnim and myself will be opening 24 booster packs or 1 box of a core Yu-Gi-Oh! booster set. We will build a deck and play a best 2 out of 3, and the winner will receive a small prize to upgrade their deck. HOWEVER! Each episode, we will open another box of the next set that was released moving in chronological order, constantly upgrading our decks before dueling each other at the end of each episode. This is the Yu-Gi-Oh! Progression Series.

Did Cimo just not notice that he milled spore in game 1? He could've went for blackrose without committing to the normal, he could've made the second one after the first was stopped, or he could've made a synchro with the dandy tokens afterwards.
Honestly Dragon Rulers looks like the best format I’ve seen so far in history. The fact that there are so many variants to the deck but not having a billion negates like modern yugioh makes me want to try it.
Yeah absolutely post-ban list Dragon Rulers was the best format I've ever played in hell the original Dragon Rulers format was fun if you were playing the mirror but not so much if you didn't wanna play Dragon Rulers
If dragon ruler didn’t exist, or if it was gentlemen’s agreed not to play it for a tournament it would’ve been the best format we’ve ever had. Most diverse comp deck lists we’ve seen in a while
@@tysonpotato3495 I mean, the 2014 formats are basically the same thing with less dragon rulers, they're some of the best and most diverse formats in the history of the game , particularly 'fire-water' & 'ycs las vegas' formats with basically this card pool & 1 or 2 more banlists
Hey Cimo, I know it's kinda a meme to dunk on u a bit for ur great protag luck and all, but I just wanna say, I really do appreciate all ur doing for the community and all the entertainment u've provided us, especially since the pandemic and all things Progrussy began. It's been a real blast, and I super appreciate all the work that has to go into all the research u guys dig up for these History Of videos, too.
Can confirm, there was a fairly consistent FTK that used Stratos as a core combo piece that abused Divine Wind of Mist Valley that got a significant number of cards put on the banlist. Other notable cards in the combo are Ancient Fairy Dragon, Black Garden, Genex Ally Birdman, as well as a fusion I forget the name of that has 1 Pyro + 1 Machine as it's materials
For those who are wondering when the dragon rulers end I believe it's when dark matter dragon came out which I believe is when secrets of eternity came out or the set before it
I feel we need to see MBT's perspective too. Since we can see Cimo's hands we always know how ass his plays are. MBT shouldn't be excluded from our unwavering eyes
The Dragon Rulers are for me, in spite of the collective hatred for them, some of my favorite cards to ever exist in this game. They have that weird feeling to them that, yeah, they are definitely way too strong, yet it's like they wouldn't feel right any other way. My favorite deck with them was actually the Chaos Rulers with N95, that'd be created much later. That one was plain silly. Kinda wish it lasted a little longer, but I absolutely get it why that'd be a terrible idea. I just kinda want to see the game in complete chaos sometimes.
Dragon Rulers and Fire Fists, my favorite Zexal era decks! I wasn't playing during these time, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the cool decks we've been seeing
Fire fist is legitimately one of my favorite archetypes, and fun to see it represented here. Did either of you ever play 3.5 or 3 axis on this series? Is rooster out yet?
Alex, you summoned Lyla in all three games but only milled 3 in End Phase in the last one. Don't know how determinative it was, but given how badly game 2 went, it could have made a difference? Anyway, fun episode
That's one thing that I did not like about Lightsworns (even though I loved the deck). It's the little text at the end to mill during the end phase. Can be accidentally overlooked sometimes.
in the first game, he did miss the required mill 3... but in the other two games, it was either skill drained or fiendish chained. i think even if the first game he missed timing... he would have still won based on how mbt was playing
9:31 Please Cimo, tell yourself this next Prog episode. We're at 10 consecutive episodes with a Chaos deck in it. This message is brought to you by PLEASE BAN CHAOS SORC ALREADY GUYS foundation LLC
1:58 4 MBT's deck: 4 Access Fire fist 4:50 Cimoooo's deck: Dragon Rulers 9:29 Game 1 16:22 reading is fundamental to learn monster effects 20:44 game 2 24:33 the light brigade is out of the house 25:45 game 3
Man seeing this it’s no surprise that later on people just decided Card Car D was the normal summon in Fire Fist lol. If you don’t see bear you just die
This is why a lot of people went to 3-axis or 3.5 axis fire fist when Rooster came out because the level 3 pool was significantly better. Level 4 was basically just bear.
I would like you guys to show as many of dragon rulers variants as possible, and also I do like to see how dragon rulers during this time were compared to other decks. I love that Joseph is playing that fire fighters ... thing... .. forgot the name of the deck..
I feel like if the babies never existed, Dragon Ruler splash would have been a generally well received best deck, and probably wouldn't have needed to be hit as hard or as quickly. I think the speed and variety in this format is actually really welcome
@@jacobjensen7704 I know, I was playing during this time but only within my family. We all knew dragon ruler was strong, but this was before any of us took it seriously so we were heavily behind the meta. I just want to see what else was amazing at the time to see what I missed out on. (We we’re still on rescue rabbit firefist / Six samurai back then)
I love backrow battles, probably my favorite part of "classic" formats is all these back and forth spell/trap interactions. You'd think putting more of these kinds of effects on monsters would help make the game even more interactive, but somehow the opposite happened with hand traps being the most relevant ways of interacting with decks people are willing to make use of. Even the best spells and traps in use now are generally floodgates and board wipes, compounding the problem.
The difference is that Trap Cards are not searchable, you need to hard draw them. These kind of effects on extra deck monsters isn't good because you pretty much have access to them all the time. You also need to set traps first and wait a turn before you can activate him which means you can destroy them before your opponent can use the effect. Negation effects in my opinion are only balanced in trap cards and actually makes trap cards very viable.
the one major problem with this series (and a couple others you make) is i really, really wish that whenever cards that hadn't been previously played in this show before come up, you'd actually READ the effects of all of the relevant ones. this is a point in the game where i wasn't playing, and it's why i fell off about halfway through last season of progression: i didn't know what half the non dm staple cards did, and that made the games really hard to follow without having a wiki up and pausing every minute or so.
This episode really shows why people developed 3.5 axis Fire Fist after Rooster finally came to the TCG. Bear was kinda the only good Fire Fist monster... and that's it for level 4's. The level 3 pool is much better once Rooster comes to the TCG, thus why people did a hybrid of the two.
@@ojamagear220 Instead of setting it. I get that he was most likely trying to bluff since Lance was not enough to contest Tidal anyways, but if he gets rid of Tidal Cimo doesn't have enough cards to bring him back out
I actually really enjoy watching dragon ruler game play. It's very back and forth and requires skill. If the pilots have said skill required to play the deck is another problem...
I started playing competitively when this banlist released. I hated the format before it so i refused to start going, saw this banlist and have loved the game since haha
Stratos actually did a lot wrong, he was a core card in Divine Wind of Mist Valley FTK, which was consistent enough that it got a bunch of cards hit. Other cards used in the combo are Ancient Fairy Dragon, Black Garden, Genex Ally Birdman, and a fusion that I forget the name of that has 1 Pyro + 1 Machine as the materials that does a ton of burn damage
Why does it seem like any card with a mil only mills your hood cards? Played the twilightsworn solo round for the Gren Maju deck and managed to banish gren and punishment dragon every time.
Having played in this era, later on when we got vulcan the divine and a few other support cards the 3 axis deck was better. Might have been due to wolfbark getting hit on the list. A fate later suffered by chicken & spirit.
Pendulums were added to the game, which many old-school players swear made the game absolutely unplayable and unfun, but in reality the pendulum era was a lot of people's most fun experiences with the game and Yugi Boomers just be Yugi Boomers
pendulums were almost completely irrelevant until late 2015 anyway, & really it wasn't till early 2016, whole formats of 2015 & 2016 would practically require you enjoy playing burning abyss mirrors though xP the super recursive xyz deck that almost never dies either via banlists, viability or in actual play
God I hated ruler formats. Nothing could really compete too well with them. Flood gates were only good if they stuck, and they were the only chance you had. Rulers were just too far ahead of their time
Great video! Kinda random question, but does anyone have any recommendations for channels/videos that review the current metagame in depth, including decks, play strategies, etc.? I feel like I have a hard time keeping up with how the game changes so fast.
