I was just going to say the same thing and saw your comment. Winnie is absolutely amazing and has come a long way despite nasty people like Yu Tsai in this industry. So proud of her for standing up to an ignorant, Yu Tsai.
Btw what I'm saying is based on video I saw a while back, a compilation of her being not so great, I'll see if I can find it. But yeah, her being disrespected due to her condition is sickening, she puts BOUNDARIES and LIMITS and that shouldn't be difficult to considerate
I think she was very immature at the time. But then again SHE WAS 19!! Like she had the right to be immature. Love Winnie now. She deserves her success.
Don't forget this the same guy who argued with Johnny Wujek the creative director on Cycle 19 and 20, who is actually a decent guy compared to Jay and him and argued in Jordan's photoshoot and made Jordan uncomfortable. And the next cycle, they replaced Johnny with him! What the hell?
When i watched this season , When Winnie came back into the competition it felt like she didn't want to be there ...but i now looking back it kind of explains it , with the treatment she got . Even the other models were calling her 'stuck up' & 'ungrateful' .

This reminded me of an episode of Hell’s Kitchen where there was a contestant named Robert, and Gordon Ramsey often called him Bobby. The contestant asked to speak with Gordon and told him that his dad was named Bobby and he had a rough childhood and being called that impacted him poorly. Gordon genuinely apologized, told him he wished he had told him sooner so he could have avoided putting him in that position but that he was glad he spoke up, and assured him that he would call him by his full name moving forward. Definitely the opposite of this horrible interaction. Even though he didn’t have ill intent, he recognized that it was impacting someone negatively and apologized and changed his behavior. Kudos to him.
When I started reading this comment I got a little nervous, expecting that Gordon Ramsey reacted the same way as this guy. But of course, Gordon continues to be one of the most considerate people in the business. You have folks like Gordon whose “persona” is to be rough and difficult, but in reality they are so kind and cool. Then you’ve got folks like this guy who pretend to be cool but are in reality just arrogant jerks
As someone who also has vitiligo, nicknames like that are almost never received positively. It takes an enormous amount of confidence, and a very high self esteem to be able to just be okay with it. This show had mostly teenagers as target audience, and as Chantelle said, there would absolutely be people who watch it on TV, and just think its okay for them to start calling others names like that. Getting called panda, cow, zebra, is not a compliment when you have vitiligo. It makes you hyperconscious about the way you look, and can ruin your entire day. All the stares, whispers and sidestepping is enough. We don't need your "cute" nickname. Also, it doesn't help that Yu Tsai is a massive c u next tuesday.
I don't have vitiligo and I find that extremely disrespectful. She didn't consent to being called that. He's an acquaintance to her, they aren't friends. He needs to learn his place and what's socially acceptable.
She was being very patient with him, she didn't call him offensive, or a racist or rude or anything, she just calmly explained how it was an issue that she'd want him to stop doing. She even said she understood his intention with the comment, and yet SHE is meant to be the problem. I feel bad that she had to finally just accept that he was gonna keep calling her that regardless, when she really gave him an opportunity to gain perspective and learn. But then again this is ANTM and he is the creative director so that would have been too much to ask I guess.
The amount of GASLIGHTING this photographer did to Chantelle. And to think, she was also trying to help HIS image by telling him she doesn’t want others to think of him negativity
She grows up her entire life thus far being called nicknames such as this and I'm sure there's a lot of trauma attached to being bullied for her skin. I'm really proud of her for standing up for herself graciously. Him telling her how to feel was disgraceful. He has no idea what she's been through and he has no right to tell her how to feel. Not even "tell" her how to feel; more like demand her to feel a certain way because he won't back down despite being completely wrong and tone-deaf. This show is so disappointing in their treatment of human beings. She's not there for your amusement.

She's not just any model she's WINNIE HARLOW. I had no idea she even came from this show!! This is how a super model acts. Stood up for herself and stayed professional the whole time.
She said in an interview once that ANTM did NOT provide any real modeling opportunities, she said it was just one big reality show and not an actual competition. She got her modeling opportunities on her own and no agency even knew she was featured on antm
Yeah, I think she's said that Tyra recruited her from Instagram and that she had some other contacts from IG before the show. But I know she's definitely said that her modeling work after the show had nothing to do with her being on it.

She didn’t come from this show. Same thing with Nyles. They were both from the “transitional” time where social media was really at the peak and models. Singers, actors were all coming from Instagram and Twitter. ANTM recruited them to try to save themselves because the traditional “agency scouting” style of finding models that ANTM was built on just doesn’t work in the modern world.
Winnie Harlow’s success in the industry isn’t because of the show, it’s in spite of it Not only did she received the Angry Black Woman edit, she had SO many micro aggressions from Tyra and production. As well as the panda incident, Chantelle/Winnie was given a (bad) ombré to “match her skin” and got told off because she was expected to choose a zebra print suitcase in a photoshoot and she said that it was offensive. I’m sure there were many more but that’s just what comes to mind straight away
Ikr. Especially, she got a horrendous edit that doesn't do her any favor. Tyra didn't condemn Yu Tsai's behavor nor did she support Winnie after this argument. Honestly, I think Tyra even hated her for sticking up for herself becoz the girls ain't allowed to voice their opinions.
I watched a vid of Winnie saying that the modelling success she has now came from work she did after the show, not even remotely related to the show, because the show does nothing for any models career. Needless to say, Tyra is kind of salty about that. LOL

Yep this is the one that really pissed me off. I hate yu tsai. He once told a model on Asia's next top model who was crying/upset on set to : "get the hell out of the set" and made her breakdown even worse. He actually made Mr. J looks like an angel. When someone doesnt like your "nickname" and you keep insisting on using it....its called Bullying.

If you put a logo of some kind on the footage box you might be able to get through the copyright claims. That's what MasterofBlackjack does for 90 Day Fiance content and somehow he gets away with it.

She literally handled it perfect, and he still tried to turn the narrative to make her look like she gave an attitude, she was literally the sweetest and held herself much more than most of us would have. I already liked Winni but now I have a lot more respect for her
my dad has vitiligo and those ''nicknames'' are never endearing and i'm pretty sure that most people with vitiligo hate being called that sort of name, even my mom who has been married to my dad for 30+ years would never call my dad a "panda", that man was so disrespectful

Story time: I went to a school where all ages mingled, and the oldest would play with the youngest during recess. Me and a friend had nicknamed one of the small kids smiley. She was always one big smile and it was meant positive. Her mom calls- turns out the girl hated it. I explained we didnt mean it bad but id never use it again ofcourse, and i was sorry about her feeling bad. Never called her smiley again. Its THAT SIMPLE. I was 12. ffs he should be more mature than i was then
I once had a high school teacher who asked me, in earnest, when joking/playing around becomes bullying. I told him “When the other person asks you to stop and you don’t”. It’s really that simple.

i have vitiligo and i do not like being called a panda or a cow or anything like that. i don't get how he could just brush it off saying that it was never insulting and demeaning when it clearly seemed to be. alright, he did that as a fun, loving gesture but when she said that she didn't want to be called that, why did he go out of his way to reason himself instead of accepting the fact that it is indeed a demeaning hurtful thing? what if people think that it's ok to call someone with this skin disease like that when it's already too much to live with vitiligo because of society's view on it?
Skin conditions are so terrible to have to deal with. I "only" have psoriasis but if it's really bad, people look at me strange as well. It's not contagious, folks. I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like to live with vitiligo and to have to deal with people like him. Just terrible, self centered, and rude.
He is ableist probably. He thinks that abled people, without facial differences, are inherently superior to people with vitiligo and that he can belittle her and tell her what to do.
The thing is she even said herself that she knew it came from a loving, caring place. Yet, she continued to get riled up and take offense. It is clear that he has called her this before and she was okay with it before. Now she wants to say it isn't okay. In an industry like this, that is deemed as being difficult to work with. If she had a problem with him calling her that, she should have said that to begin with. But, she didn't and instead made it an issue during a professional setting. It is frustrating when someone is taking offense to something that wouldn't offend them before. If you're going to switch up on people like that at least understand why you're going to have some resistance. Also, it has been proven that she is difficult to work with. Not in this case particularly. But it is easy to find compilations and personal experiences from people that view her as difficult and arrogant.

It’s beyond disrespectful that even after she made it clear in a very easy to understand way I.e kids seeing him call her panda and then using it to other people with Vitiligo, that he doubled down on his point and gaslight her and the situation. For him to THEN come for her career and label her as “difficult to work with” is insane and typical narcissist behaviour.
When I was a child I literally played barbie dolls as if they were on ANTM... I loved Tyra so much and loved the show, this is how influential a show can be on a literal child, maybe back then I thought the models were treated right. Now that I re watch with you, this show is Tyra being an evil, calling models names and making them feel bad, now I have 0 appreciation for Tyra.
I felt the same way I used to LOVE Tyra now I look back and realize I was seeing things through the rose colored glasses of a child and it sucks. ANTM was my show but I still noticed when her mask would slip and the bully in her would come out.

If this was in a professional work place, Human Resources would be called in. If you can get in trouble calling someone love or sweetie, calling someone with a skin condition Panda is definitely unprofessional language and you would be out the door. Especially since we have proof that she told him very reasonably why she did not want to be called it. They tell these girls so often that they are unprofessional when most of what they themselves do would not be tolerated in an actual workplace. No wonder the modelling and fashion industry has a bad name if this is what these young girls are told is reasonable.
He attempted to gaslighting her as if she doesn’t have any right to not accepting to be called a panda. Pandas are cute, but calling someone with vitiligo a Panda can veer into calling this person any other animal with patterns and it could be spiteful so NO.
It's silly to turn it into a discussion about the likeability of the animal. Even if 100% of people the world loved pandas and every other spotted animal, if she asks you to stop calling her panda, you should stop. Toucans are beautiful birds. That doesn't mean someone with a big nose needs to be grateful when you call them toucan "with love". Anyone can see how it hits different to be called a "panda" because of your skin condition or "toucan" because of your big nose. And threatening to call her "porcupine" when she rejected "panda"... That was SO childish!
The way he continued to call her animal names after she addressed the problem was him indeed proving her point by calling her a porcupine in a way that was mean , malicious and bullying. And when he further goes the length to mention he can change and addressing if she could? No Yu Tsai she doesn't need to change. She was fine. Only you need to change Yu Tsai, just you.

She approached that confrontation with such maturity and he was acting like she was being a diva. Also, "When I gave you the nickname, it was to help you." How? How is panda ever a helpful nickname?
This moment was iconic for me only for the fact that Winnie was in the right and articulated herself correctly. So that they couldn't turn it her later at panel. Yu Tsai was such a nasty bully that production made him aplogise so that the public wouldn't turn on him and finally I realised that this show had 0% to do with modeling
As someone with VERY visible psoriasis and having had a visible skin condition since I was 10... This entire conversation made me quit watching this show when it aired. Just such disgusting behaviour from Yu Tsai
Her "attitude" is her willingingness and readiness to stick up for her and others bcos of self respect. He knows EXACTLY what he meant, esp in an industry like modelling the model is expected to endure sooooo much more than just " cute nicknames" that's why it's such a toxic industry. I'm bald due to alopecia, and if someone with whom I was working called me baldy, even if it came from a "loving place" I'd still be embarrassed and offended. I don't want the fact that I'm different to be called out. It was completely inappropriate for him to call her what he did.
This among other problematic scenes happened before the cancel culture. India winner from cycle 23 told that she was body-shamed by one of the judges (the least judge that everyone could think would’ve bodyshamed someone) but editors chop that scene off because now they’re aware that it is not normalized those behaviors anymore

I feel like ANTM edited this confrontation out of order so they could end it on a "positive" note. Him walking off while calling her a porcupine and her crying was most likely the end of that discussion. The whole scene is just off the wall.

Yu Tsai apparently missed the memo: When someone tells you the nickname you're calling them is offensive, it is NOT up to you to answer, "No it isn't." Your one and only job is to stop calling them that.
I remember watching this episode when it aired and I absolutely could not BELIEVE she was being portrayed as unreasonable. But I guess that's just par for the course on this show.

This clip reminds me of why I never confronted my white friends in high school who would say racist stuff to me or about how I looked. I'll tell you it damn well isn't like that today but....I hope people see this is why "Well, they didn't say anything about it bothering them" is not an excuse.
I have white skin, I can’t tan. My whole life random or not so random people of all sorts of skin colors have told me “you’re soooo white…that’s not healthy/doesn’t look healthy/not normal…spend 30 minutes in the sun everyday”. Or they’ve even asked if I’m unwell because I look to white. Like wtf. I eventually started to tell people to shut up because it’s not ok to comment on peoples skin colour, black, white, pink, brown…it’s all offensive.
But she DID say it bothered her. I can't comment on your friends, because I don't know what they said or how you reacted. Some mixed race friends enjoy race jokes and are not bothered by race-based nicknames or whatever, so I do think it's important to let people know where you draw YOUR line. But here there was no question. Yu Tsai cannot say he didn't know or that he thought she liked it. She told him and his responses were so ridiculous, "I call you panda to help you", "If you don't like panda then I'll call you porcupine!"

I will never understand why Yu Tsai still hasn't been canceled. I remember watching this on TV and being really uncomfortable at his blatant ignorance, and the fact that he would exercise his authority to demean someone for calling him out is absolutely disgusting. I wish more people saw this and STOPPED giving him work.
I forgot about this one.... I remember being upset by this and I still cant believe rewatching this today, he is actually arguing to justify that its ok to call someone something especially when they say they dont like it, so disrespectful, that took guts for her to call them out and say she doesnt like it, that should be respected, not many feel they have that power to say no (myself included) she is just stunning inside and out, mad respect for her.

I watched this years ago, and even at that time, I really disliked how defensive he got. They tried to make it look like she was nagging and complaining about nothing. She had every right to speak out when someone said something relating to HER body/looks.
It's VERY obvious that she's lying about being ok with it and shifting the focus to others to impress upon him that he needs to NOT do that to anybody else. She doesn't see it as "loving". Who is he to her? Nobody. They're not even friends. He shouldn't feel like he can call her that whether he means well or not and he sure as hell shouldn't feel like it's ok to totally ignore everything she says!

As someone with visible vitiligo like winnie it can be very dehumanizing. People are so obsessed with the skin condition that they forget that we are people. I've had strangers just come up and touch me or grab me to satisfy your curiosity. Like I just wish people would just leave me alone and if you see someone with vitiligo just leave them alone unless you are wanting to have a conversation outside of there skin condition
“Chantelle is not going to make a good model”- Well she turned out to be right up there among the most successful contestants to have come out of the show (in terms of a modelling career). She is pretty much a supermodel now!
GIRL ! i absolutely love that you have done these series about the show . You have truly shed light on how these models were treated and I’m sure they are all very thankful ! BUT ! , have we seen any apologies from any of these people ? Mr jay ? The photographers ? The people who allowed a girl to get sexually assaulted during filming ? If not ? IT IS TIME FOR IT TO HAPPEN . These videos have been widely viral everywhere you cannot tell me Tyra and some of the people involved with the show have not watched .

I am glad I found another RU-vid creator that has seen the problems in ANTM. This part here reminds me back in Cycle 1, Ebony where the white women in the salon were making rude remarks about shaving their names in her head and a lot of racial undertones in this cycle. I wholeheartedly felt terrible for Ebony and now Winnie. This is so unacceptable and I am glad that this is being called out as it should. The fact that Tyra allowed this to happened in sickening. As others have said, Tyra is indeeded a bully and a mean girl.

There’s a HUGE difference between setting boundaries and “having an attitude”. People just use that term when their shitty behavior gets called out. Manipulative and gross.
I also have vitiligo and empathize, but honestly this mostly took me back to HS and having my last name butchered over and over again and being told to stop being argumentative when I tried to correct them. It's not "being difficult" or "being disrespectful" to advocate for respect.
