I’m conflicted. I like HxH but I see people overhype the shit out of it. Hakusho is simply better in every way imo. Better protagonist, deeper themes, better soundtrack, better villains. I like both but Hakusho is literally timeless. Oh and hakushos ending was def rushed, but at least it did get finished unlike hunter lol.
@Remix God Gon is not like a normal protagonist he's extremely complex. He's morally gray and takes things to the extreme that was the whole point of the chimera ant arc. I think his character was executed extremely well
Better sound track? There was like four songs for almost the whole anime or somewhere around that amount. I will admit the op is better than hxh tho. and deeper themes? Actually watch hxh before having these terrible takes.
@@animekidben6171 I mean YYH has similar themes at play, but I think its themes are ones that people with more life experience can relate to better. Like with Toguro's and Sensui's quests for repenting in ways that they deem to be appropriate for the sins they committed: Toguro being obsessed with power to the point of becoming a monster, and Sensui becoming broken for defending a race that was just as, if not more brutal, than demons.
This Show Was Definitely Slept On It Should Have Been On DBZ Level But The Fact That Ppl Wasn’t Paying Attention To Stories lines Back Then Was The problem They Was More On looking for Fights. But Yuyu Hakusho Had Real Personal And Strategize Fights And Ppl Wasn’t over power Thats What Made The Fights So level Out And Suspenseful Yusuke Vs Toguro should have had the Same impact like goku vs Frieza
Absolutely agree with you my friend, I may be biased due to to the fact Yu Yu Hakusho was my introduction to anime; but every time it’s rewatched, it only improves in my eyes
I am on season 4 of Hunter x Hunter (2011), and while it is excellent I do feel YYH is still better. However, that may change once I've finished the anime and caught up with the manga. I always, and will always tell people to watch YuYu Hakusho ESPECIALLY if they like HxH.
I watched Yu Yu Hakusho when I was a teenager, I was around 15 years old. I only had one friend at school that knew about Yu Yu hakusho and we used to talk a lot about it, fun times. Since I've watched Yu Yu Hakusho multiples times, it is one of the best shonen out there. I've never understand the hype around Hunter x hunter, don't get me wrong I think it's really good but at times I feel like fans overhype this manga like it stand alone above the rest and can't be compare to other manga/anime. Yu Yu Hakusho despite its flaws is consistent in quality, there was no dull moments. It's a complete package
Hunter Hunter comes off as Togashi's jaded parody of one piece. every thing anyone likes in hunter hunter was done first and better by Yuu Yuu Hakusho. I've seen both versions of Hunter hunter 4x I've seen Yuu Yuu innumerable times and the manga is one of the greatest pieces of literature in human history and a magnum opus among the medium of story telling in general. hunter hunter is a disappointment that fails to live up to Yuu Yuu Hakusho the way baby Sasuke is a disappointment that fails to live up to Itachi..
I love both HxH & YuYu but the latter is definitely my preferred of the two. Love the whole main cast and while it takes a bit to truly get going I think it has more heart and humor. And it’s a complete story; hopefully HxH gets the chance someday to be one too.
I just finished watching YYH for the third time and i'll just say that hunter x hunter is just better in everyway (or most of every way, i do really like the cast and villains). I think if people decided to rewatch it then their opinion would probably change. Just try getting through those earlier arcs and watching a fight go on for an entire episode, sometimes longer cause the characters keep talking (like how Touya knows that Kurama is buying time to free himself and yet still just talking). Or that it can take 3 minutes for the episode to actually start because of the opening and recaps. Or how the animation is basically a slide show for most of the fights and repeated animations. YYH manga is around 30 years old and it shows in the animation and story. It just hasn't aged all that well. Power scaling akin to dragon ball z, sudden power ups, emotions making you stronger, long fights, etc. Regarding the characters, while i liked them a lot, you can tell that Togashi was making it up as he went. Like, giving Kurana and heie their backstory in the final arc. As with other things like the world building and power scaling. Like, Yusuke being a descendent of the Mazoku. Togashi took what he learned from writing YYH and made a better series with HXH.
I keep hearing this and people tell me to watch Hunter x Hunter, but when I tried (literally yesterday) I didn't really like it at all. Yu Yu hooked me immediately with imo one of the greatest first episodes of all time. Also I think the age difference in cast makes me gravitate toward YYH. I really loved the plot of YYH. I obviously can't compare it HxH much seeing as how little I watched of that show, but to me YYH was like the best possible cheesy 80s type of story. In the dark tournament and before you have the old lady master who's student is forced into a death match with her former lover who happens to be the strongest demon in the living world. It's definitely cheesy and has cliche to it but it's executed so well I just don't care. I welcome the cheese if it's done at the level YYH does it. I actually want to watch HxH but I haven't been given a better reason than "Trust me it gets really good at Yorknew/Chimera Ant." But I just can't make myself watch something I'm uninterested in for the promise of better future content. Also I can't decide on 99 vs 2011 if I do decide to keep watching. I watched the first couple episodes of each and I think 99 does everything besides animation better, but obviously it would be jarring to watch 99 then jump to 2011 later in the series. The first episode alone was done so much better in 99 it was staggering. I'm not saying I don't like HxH, but so far it isn't resonating as much as YYH did in the early episodes. HxH feels like an old school nintendo or ps1 rpg to me, which isn't a bad thing but not necessarily my preferred style.
@@deaj8450 I mean i don't know what to tell you besides it does get better later on. York new and chimera ant arc are standout arcs. But the first arc is easily the worst arc if not counting the short arcs. I recommend giving something more than just an episoide. Also, if the 99 version is something you liked more then just do it. There are people who do like the 99 version more. Once you finish york new then just move to 2011 version. It may be a big shift but if you do get into the story then it won't matter.
@ben99ny69 Yeah I'm on episode 6 at the moment, I stuck with 99 after watching up to the same plot point in each version. I do imagine it will get better as most shows do, I think what turns me off of it is mostly that I don't really feel any strong affinity for Gon or Leorio, though I like Kurapika, and specifically it feels geared towards a younger audience than YYH so far. I will say the only moment I've truly disliked has been the old lady's quiz near what I assume is still the very beginning of the exam. The one about which loved one you would save. The whole "silence being the correct answer." was really dumb to me, the actual answers to her questions are just going to be different to anyone depending on who you ask and you can't save everyone all the tme. I didn't understand what the show was trying to teach, or maybe I did but just disagree. But that's just one scene, the rest so far has been good to meh so I'll keep watching for a bit until it either captivates me or I'll find something else. I'm running out of anime I'm actually interested in watching, there's almost no recent anime from the last 10 or so years I've liked. It'd be nice to have another hundred plus episodes of good content in my brain if this ends up being great.
@@ben99ny69 Unfortunately I'm close to dropping it about a dozen episodes in. I think I'm too old to be the target audience, it feels like it was aimed for a much lower age than YYH and I'm just not able to get into it like with other anime. I'm not sure how I feel about the genre, or the way it's written. I've been told it's like an anti Shonen and I agree. Unfortunately I don't think that makes it a good thing, because everything is subverted to the point where my expectations are for everything to always be subverted. Therefore eliminating the point of subversion, and I honestly haven't liked the "unexpected" stuff much so far. I'm sure it does get better, so I'll try to watch up til Yorknew but man... I'll probably just be one of those weirdos who doesn't like it, I'm used to having unpopular views. For instance I also like Fma 03 way more than Brotherhood which is probably sacrilegious in some part of the world.
@@deaj8450 You like what you like. I don't like berserk and i've never seen any say that before. HXH is not targeted towards kids. Hunter x hunter just has a childish outlook but its much more... dark or grim i guess. Hunter x hunter doesn't just subvert expectations. Its just a good shounen. It does its power system, fights, power exaclation, arc structure, etc better than basically every other shounen.
Also, I want to add some more thoughts. People typically say that HxH has better writing. I disagree. YYH kills the main character in episode 1. HxH is about a boy searching for his dad. YYH has a much more unpredictable story in this regard, and also is much more creative. I think the power systems are equally as good. Spirit / Demon / Sacred / Life Energy is so simple that you can understand it super easily with nothing to memorize. Nen is super complicated but also EXTREMELY good, but there are times you’re wondering how you’ll be able to remember everything about it. The show does a good job, though. Also, I appreciate that we watch characters gain their powers progressively through both shows, but YYH was much faster. Remember that Killua only got Godspeed toward the end of the second to last arc. Gon only got it in Greed Island. Leorio didn’t get his until the VERY END. I think YYH has the superior soundtrack but both are amazing. I think that Meruem is the greatest fictional villain of all time, even surpassing those in YYH. But I think the other YYH villains are a bit better than Hisoka and Chrollo, but it’s close. So Meruem is my second favorite fictional character, but Yusuke took that title from him. YYH is more geared toward adults I think. And most important of all… YYH has a charm. It’s unlike anything else I can describe. It just has this… aura to it. It might be due to the beautiful way it’s drawn and animated, the surreal nature to the spirit world, the incredible characters and story, and the best intro ever. But… I just don’t know. I think a lot of it stems from Koenma, actually. He’s one of my favorites, and he just adds SOOOOOO much to the show. I don’t know what else more can be said about it. :)
I agree if YYH had a remake it would boost it popularity by alot. I prefer Yusuke as a character rather than Gon. But Yusuke is older than him and therefore cooler he smokes and drinks and gambles he's basically a yakuza in training. Also Togashi planned to kill off Kuwabara and Genkai but the editor forced him to revive them. At least Genkai should have stayed dead if not both. But yea Hiei vs Bui. Yusuke vs Togoro. And Yusuke vs Sensui are in my top 10 anime fights. Very strong and underrated series
I'll go a step further and say that Toguro not killing Kuwabara or Genkai ties into his character far better. It's reduced by DBZ and other anime making characters not really die, but if you isolate it to just YYH, it makes a lot of sense. Toguro isn't a fan of killing but does what he needs to. So if he can fake Kuwabara's death and hope Kuwabara goes along then that's pretty up his alley. And Genkai coming back is because Toguro basically predicts the best case scenario.
Honestly I think it’s hard to compare the two as they both seem like different works. If Hunter x Hunter is praised as this “deconstruction” of Shonen. Then YYH is an monument to early battle series Shonen like Dragon Ball and Fist Of The North Star. Though I will argue that I think some of Hunter X Hunter ideas and aspects definitely were influenced by Togashi’s works on YYH. So you really can’t have one without the other.
Ive been saying Yu Yu Hakusho is better than Hunter X Hunter for years. Overall, i say HxH is to over rated. Plus the protaganist and character development in HxH to me is done poorly imho. I dont like Gon, I dont like Killua tbh and Leorio is about the only one out of the 3 characters i actually like in HxH
I loved YuYu Hakusho…it’s better and shorter. I tried HxH but end up taking breaks because…full truth I found it less entertaining. When HxH hits it hits hard and is interesting but YuYu got to be interesting quicker and HxH pacing is damn near Dragonball like at times

I don't think preferring Yusuke over Gon is controversial. I saw plenty YYH vs. HXH discussions online and many would agree with you (and rightfully so imo). Overall, great video. YYH has been my favourite shonen series for a long time. Yeah, the last arc was mediocre at best (mostly due to Togashi's health at the time), but Dark Tournament and Chapter Black were simply amazing.
Its just true. Togashi literally gave up on both at a point, but Yu Yu Hakusho had a more coherent plotline, pacing, and narrative focus. HxH he is just all over the place sometimes even when the power system has such potential with good integration with the world. Just the story of the group in YYH is by far better, with better protagonists and antagonists overall. Growing with the boys was just a treat. Flame of Recca also gets a raw deal in the same way YYH does. If they had a decent remake it would almost guarantee them popularity.
Thank you. I only watched Yu Yu Hakusho because Hunter x Hunter was my all time favorite show at the time, and Togashi created it. I eventually realized while watching Yu Yu Hakusho, that I actually loved it a lot more than even Hunter x Hunter! It is a true masterpiece! Both are. But Yu Yu Hakusho is just the best.
They are both good. I prefer HxH because towards the end of YYH it got to be very DragonBall Z ish. The fights became who had the biggest Lazer peen. Togashi is GOAT though. 🐐
I agree that the ending is lacking in certain ways. If I remember correctly I thinks its because Togashi was rushing the ending. Although, I still love it for everything it did well.
Eh the battles in HxH consist of a lot of standing around and having nen powers that require pages of explanation just to know how they work makes them a lot less watchable then YYH
the only characters I can agree with being better for YYH is the main cast… I can give you multiple people that are just as interesting as Toguro in HxH.. Hisoka, Illumi, Chrollo, Meruem just to name a few.. the world building in HxH is better & the characters have LESS plot armor than any other anime.. I would say HxH’s best two arcs stack up evenly with YYH’s. They’re both about even as whole, it comes down to preference.
@@e6em more depth doesn’t make a character better, a show that can be good on its entertainment value alone should be a contender in a valid comparison. Hxh is a more boring show then yuyu for most people despite its depth.
I personally also prefer yuyuhakusho,firstly yusuke is the total oposite of gon's character arc,they both start as a top dog in their town like gon is the only person strong enough to fish the biggest fish in his village and yusuke is the thoughest kid in his town,like he beats entire groups of people his or older age,taller or his hight and bro is not really that tired,trully a manace, and yusuke becoming better and better as he matures from a delinquend to a dude that has a future ahead of him,friends and family that supprts him and most of all a young man that has found himself after all his fighting and depression,then we have gon who started as a simple overpowered child and never really changed much untill the chimera aunt ark,gon is not an adult,he is like 11,misses a father figure to teach him how to live and be responsible and not be reacless,and he remains like that till the end,carefree,caring only for those that he knows as friends,world can die but god bless he will go to hell if they take killua,and after kite's death got finally experiensing grief he can't live with himself knowing kite is gone for good and sacrifises his life in a fit of rage knowing he was not gonna live the fight either way,trowing his future,his friends and the world in mind in thr most backed up corner of his mind only and only to beat pitou,gon never grew up and even for a bit before his fight with pitou he became so corupt with his hate that he treatened to kill the inosent girl pitou tried to save,conclusion to all this long as fuck coment is that yusuke grew a lot in the 4 years of the events of yuyuhakusho and gon didn't in his show,he kept taking risk after risk and it chosted him in the end almost his life and his nen for the rest of his life
Id say yu Yu for nostalgia purposes and fond memories it was really fun and amazing wish the last arc ended on better terms thou but hxh omg it's just so grand in every way and with it announcement coming back andthe reaction it got , the impact of hxh is something. Imo is so much more better written and challenged and changed the genre to the point were people still confuse it for a sheinen I also like hxh charcters more vilians are so well written and protagonist are about equal I think but what they did with gon and killua at the end and what they are doing with kurapika in manga is unbelievable there so much crazy shit going down with the 13 princes, beyond,the zodiacs, the phantom troupe ,HISOKA omg, and don't get me started on the dark continent. However I will say it could change with a modern yuyu adaption with a better ending ✨ regardless nice video!
Real anime stand the test of time , let posers not see yuyu Hakusho . Im happy knowing that popularity dick riding fans aint watching real good shows n can stick to the wak shit .Coming from a fan who saw yuyu first then saw hxh I can say yuyu is better in certain areas n hxh is better .the area were hxh is better is just the powers system established in the hxh story its complex n simple at the same time which works . Yes the stories arcs in hxh are lackluster (hated the chimera ant saga thought it was wak af )compared to yuyu , yuyu had better storyline with its tournament style battle going on .in all they both are great but with characters depth i too I pick yuyu over hxh .gon's personality was too generic compared to urameshi.
I’m glad Togashi got to do the manga he wanted with HunterxHunter. But not only can you see all the bones of HXH in Yu Yu Hakusho but the story and characters of Yu Yu Hakusho remain unblemished if not look even better when compared to manga that came out since. Also the music and 10/10
Hxh has better world building and thematically is stronger, Yu Yu hakasho has better characters and character arcs including villains, only Meruem and Killua reach the main cast of Yu Yu hakasho - any maybe Kurapika. Gons arc in the chimera ant arc is great but still not as good.
I just had this conversation with a friend the other day. I was saying I wish i finished hunter x hunter before I watched yu-yu hakusho. Both are great series but I felt like I almost did myself dirty by experiencing it. For some reason it just took away some of the magic of HxH.
i watch hunter x hunter and yu yu hakusho and honestly i watch the 1999 version first that had more filler so my experience with 2011 was way less fun because most small funny filler scene were gone
Oh man Yuyu Hakusho is so so much better than HxH, not only main characters but also YYH gave us one of the best villains (if not the best is at least top 3 for sure) in anime ofc I'm talking about Younger Toguro
YYH is considerably less progressive and nuanced, an awfully rushed ending due to a lack of passion from Togashi and the blatancy of his lack of interest extends beyond the ending in how slowly the dark tournament initially progresses with the first half being nothing but repetitive fights that don't need to occupy multiple chapters and episodes. Contrary to this I feel as though every scene in HxH is meaningful in one way r another and that it's actually trying to amount to something much more potent and applicable than YYH, HxH has a terrifically expansive and consistent cast whereas YYH has a couple of Okay characters with the standout of Sensui as I feel he's by far the most memorable and clearly the one Togashi put the most work into, every panel he has adds something to his character and I would say he's the best character between the two followed by meruem and netero. Cons8idering how much i like sensui I should also note that I think Black chapter is an amazing arc whilst carried by Sensui is an amazing take on humanity and differing perspectives of it, driven by Sensui's tragedy of self crafted prophecy and obligation due to circumstance actually allows it to be one of the best shonen arcs ever but not at the hands of the main character. The first ep of YYH is no doubt one of the best hooks ever but in saying that i do believe that conflict was resolved too quickly and it could've been given way more time to develop and stuff but I'm not too peeved by that and will give it points there. After the first ep however it just goes to side quest after side quest with awful pacing and 0 development which literally takes like 20 eps until dark tournament in which we go another 20 eps of substance less drivel that does nothing major for any character. After the dark tournament and black chapter we have the absolute mess that is three kings, a lazily written shit show of an arc with no ambition to properly explore the demon plane and just threw in a few backstories to force development late on wh8ich ultimately culminates to a decent fight between yomi in yusuke in the anime but nothing that special considering it feels so shallow. It doesn't make sense for it to feel so lifeless with the whole series resting on its shoulders but its such a forced speck of "profundity" that i couldn't bring myself to care about. Saying this HxH manages to just be so incredibly efficient in its craft, giving characters like netero and meruem such brilliant character arcs in such a short period of time and having them not feel rushed whilst also complimenting the series in its entirety. YYH is also incredibly outdated with plenty of transphobia going unpunished and an incredibly shallow female cast that are all treated as nothing outside of their respective love interest. So put aside how funny you think yyh is, how you love liking unknown stuff and just pay attention to what's being shown in hxh as there is so much more heart in it and the payoff from this is just too potent to even conceive that YYH may be better.
i sometime like yyh way better sometimes, but sometimes hxh break my expectations a lot more, especially the chimera ant arc and the unique power system, the nen system is actually great
Yuyu is just cooler looking and that does it for me. The style of of hxh is strangely simplistic and too friendly looking for my taste. Maybe people find that appealing or don't pay it any mind im not sure. Also this is coming from someone who hasn't finished either series cuz with most anime and shonen in general i feel it can just get too absurd beyond belief and i dropped them pretty easily. So don't mind me.
Neither show is lesser-known but I will say this Hunter x Hunter doesn't look like a show that I would have expected the manga artist of Yu Yu Hakusho to make. I do not mean that in a good way I'm not going to fight just because multiple people like it. I'm going to go with what makes sense to me so I do respect people's opinions bat like it. However they are so different that you would think a different author was the one responsible for hero X hunter. In my opinion it's a lower quality than Yu Yu Hakusho. If people like it that's cool. I will say this I tried watching some episodes of enough to where I can see if I like it or not I didn't. I tried to watch it I just didn't like it.
After finishing both I really liked Yu Yu Hakusho but I still prefer hunter. I enjoy nen as a combat system more and also personally I like the hunter villains more with the exception of togoro who's probably my favorite villain. However I honestly wasn't too big a fan of yomi or the other kings I didn't like sensui that much either. However I love chrollo and the phantom troupe. Merum is possibly one of the greatest written characters of all time. Also netero is such a cool character loved his back story. However both are really great I think it comes down to preference they are both testaments to how great a writer togashi is and shouldn't be competing more of something you enjoy together
to me the difference betweeen gon and yusuke is that imo gon doesnt actually have any morals and doesnt know the real difference between right and wrong, its only the right way if it benefits gon
Definitely disagree with a lot of your takes. I am pushing my friend who likes HxH to watch YYH but I think HxH is far better in pretty much everything apart from its fights. I find Gon to be far more compelling due to him starting out as a fairly morally innocent child, I disagree with the take that he's amoral but his morals are definitely a bit twisted. Seeing how his mindset is affected by Kite's death is way more interesting than most of what happened with Yusuke. I also think that the supporting cast is more interesting in HxH, there wasn't really anything on the level of Kurapika finding out that the phantom troupe is dead and losing his lives purpose or Killuas unhealthy friendship with Gon. But we do get more time with the cast of YYH so I'd agree that they're more likeable as a group. For pacing, I think the anime for both of them screwed up, the chimera ant arc felt way too long though I was a kid when I watched that and that probably affected my perception of it. The dark tournament arc definitely dragged out for way too long, the final fight was worth it but still. idk about the YYH manga but judging from the chapter count, the pacing seems to be far better, and I absolutely loved the chimera ant arc in the manga. I haven't seen anyone with a convincing argument that YYH's better but that's just because I think HxH is that good.
Some of your points I agree like yusuke being a better mc than gon and the fights are more enjoyable than hxh but other than that hxh is really well written manga in terns of characters, story arcs, villains, power systems and world building, Yusuke to me is more enjoyable mc his character development is fantastic going from a problematic kid to mature man but I also feel that gon maybe not as cool as yusuke but he’s more realistic he acts and behave and treat people like a kid even from his decisions, the villains in yyh are top tier but hunter kinda wins for having MORE top tier villains but the tournament arc in yyh is way better than hxh.
Can you really say lesser-known are can we just say that they made no attempts to capitalize on the success of Yu Yu Hakusho when if they did it would be just as popular I would even say more
