The Warlord Era is one of my favorite periods and Yuan Shikai ushered that in through his miscalculated ambition. In many ways he reminds me of Yuan Shu who similarly declared himself Emperor and alienated himself from all his support and dying ignobly shortly thereafter.

Yuan Shikai was kind of a paradox: on one hand, he was a very shrewd leader, and got on with the time (he was living in); on the other hand, his ambitions, and greed/lust for power blindsided, and consumed/took the best out of him!

Really great documentary, it is nice to see a well done video that tells the story of Yuan Shikai and put him more in a positive light. It is quite interesting how he is seen in a brighter light by Chinese historians as well. He was previously demonized for putting Cixi in power and also betraying the Republic, but now some historians view Guangxu's reform as inviting foreign interest into China as well as being damaging to the modernization, as opposed to being positive and strengthening China.

Your videos are fascinating! I'm working my way up chronologically from your one on the First Opium War. Would you consider doing a video specifically on Chinese monarchism after 1912? For example guys like Zhang Xun, Shanqi (Prince Su), and the Royalist Party? It's an interesting bit of Chinese history that isn't always well-covered in English. Shanqi and the Royalist Party, in addition to being monarchists, were also tied to a few Japanese-backed plots for Manchurian separatism, which preceded the establishment of Manchukuo. There's some curious intrigue to discuss on that subject.

Yuan wanted to be Emperor the whole time, but he misjudged the mood the of people, and hadn't consolidated his power enough, before he made the big move. This is likely why Mao, and Xi haven't done the same, even though their powers are basicly like that of the emperor just minus the 2000 years of culture behind it because the people embraced the western ways due to having a weak military and sceintific culture from years of isolationism, which is a shame as gunpowder, which brought them down, was the very thing they invented when scentific scholars where allowed rather then just confusion ones.

@@History_of_China I honestly believe that at that point the writing was on the wall. The vast majority of people in China wanted a Republic of some sort and with leaders like Sun Yat-Sen, I believe that the end of Imperial rule in China was inevitable. Not to mention the fact that the Qing were descended from foreigners & the majority of Han Chinese wanted an indigenous Han government. The old customs imposed on the Han like the queue hairstyle were humiliating to many Han Chinese who saw the Qing as Manchu tyrants. Am I right ?

@@History_of_China The more I think about it the more Guangxu seemed like a Chinese Gorbachev. His reforms were good in theory, but too little too late. The fact that the reform faction failed to consolidate military support before launching reforms suggest inexperience and naivete.

There is a mod of the Warlord Era for HoI4, but it doesn’t have any focus trees yet. If you wanna have a go at the more fantastical but more finished, the Kaiserreich alternate history scenario for the same game has an international intervention help Wu Peifu stop the Northern Expedition and the reestablishment of the Qing under Zhili dominance. China then falls back into a second warlord era in 1936 when Sun Chuanfang loses his grip on the South to KMT remmants and Yiguandao fanatics. Also for some reason Chen Jiongming and Tang Jiyao are still around.

@@charsensei878 hey. We've been discussing this whole matter at Samurai Archives. What you're saying is not entirely true. Are you referring to something in the Tokugawa epoch or are you referring to Minamoto Dogi, Nippon Koku-O (Yoshimitsu) who was the grandson of the great general and despite what historians have said and what he himself may (or may not) have secretly wanted, he was not the Tenno. Just because he wrote letters which were EXPECTED to be over the top deferential, does not mean he officially accepted vassalage. Furthermore, Edo period scholars and diplomats particularly during the bakumatsu when the bakufu's powers were being philosophically and practically discussed (and questioned) would suggest he wasnt legally able to accept it even if he did. That would be the prerogative of the Dairi. Now there IS a letter in question and as I said were discussing this at Samurai Archives as to if that letter is actually the work of the said Uji no Choja or his son Yoshimochi. You are very welcome to come join the discussion should you like.
