I think the fact that no one bats an eye within the tower maybe due to the fact that the tower desensitises people from killing and other things that would class someone as a war criminal.
@@drbonehead I think this can further be expanded to not just include this but other emotions as well. If you look at a lot of the high rankers they seem non chalont in a lot of situations that would cause people to react but they just shrug it off. Of course there are exceptions to this but generally speaking it seems to be a common thing
Nope. She can at most be a genocider. War criminal would only apply if she was involved in a war with her "nation". Since there doesn't seem to be a concept of nation, but more tribes or floors, and that we haven't seen her act in that context... hard to call her a war criminal. On top of that, murder isn't the main criteria to qualify a war criminal; it's more often the stuff you do besides killing people (killing civilians is a war crime but we don't know if she's fighting civilians or military of some kind I think). But if she's wiping out a tribe because that's what she's been ordered to do, she's probably at least an accessory to genocide 😅
Part of the appeal of Tower of God, to me at least, is a lot of the characters being 100's-1000's of years old, and how that much time can affect the way they solve problems and treat people.
To me just about everyone in the tower is evil in some way but that's just the way the tower is and it doesn't stop me from loving Yuri or having Khun as my 3rd favorite anime character ever. I also love White and despite his crime's think he's the hottest man in the tower.

It was something I was very vocal a lot of years ago. Everyone entering the Regular system is or an awful people or someone ready to do awful stuff for power and status, this is why I didn't think Rachel was "evil" or such because she is just an overall normal Regular morally wise... she seems a monster only because she did to someone the reader care. Said that I will place those awful acts in two tiers, the ones aganist people in the regular systems (regulars and rankers) and those made aganist normal inhabitants... As you said the Regulars/Rankers chose to enter this context, they are all like people playing the Hunger Games or any other hyper competitive events where murdering or be murdered is in the realm of possibility.... The story something seems to paint be a Regular as it is something noble but really it's not. You may remain overall clean only if you are so superior to the others to bend the rules in your favour.... This is in the end Baam's case, often he avoided to performe awful stuff because he can performe something impossible in theory... He remained clean because he could broke the system.... Most regulars can't. To Yuri, she is an awful person like most Rankers, in this specific case I don't know if label her more awful than normal... she is a rappresentative of the Absolute power in the tower and was sent there to performe a task... In this she is "right", as far as we can tell from her other feats... she seems to not enjoy doing those stuff and avoiding bloodshed when she has a choice, in that case she had no choice. It's not too different from Baam's action while under direct orders from FUG. Her carefree attitude while doing this is probably written to humor readers but also, it may also be read as "I had to do it, let's not think too much about it"
The other distinction with Rachel and what is hateable is the nature of betrayal. While killing and scheming to climb is certainly the norm, even enemies (Ron mei and bargav, angel and buelsar, etc.) have shown that there is some standard of trust between teammates that provides a bottom line for morality in the tower.
@@HeartofStarkness I mean yeah but we have example of people abbandoning their family, partner and children to become a Regular...Also in the case of Rachel she was quite forced to do so by Headon. She is in the same boat of Baam obeying FUG or Yuri obeying Zahad. If we add the layer of Rachel "knowing something about Baam's nature" turn the stuff weird because I am 90% sure Rachel did that for her interest but also fully knowing Baam would not die or such
I'm glad that I could be the inspiration for this one. I'm also (shameless plug time) the guy who did the Hot-or-Not poll btw and that is actually still active if you or your lovely wife would want to take a look at it, I am planning on doing an updated version right before the anime comes out also where the slate will be wiped clean and all the new characters will be added. To be clear as to my intent though, I don't think Yuri is the worst character or anything, but just that people apply morality selectively with their favorite ToG characters. People like Rachel are pieces of crap and evil but characters like Yuri are let off the hook completely. I was also mostly just finding it funny how people gloss over it and how the moment is played off as comedy despite her doing something really messed up.
One thing we have to keep in mind they live in a completely different world than ours with completely different morals, and War crimes so Yuri do this could be just another Tuesday on the job. So we should not judge them under the same laws we do in our world.
I think people need to stop judging fictional setting by the same standards as our own world so much, obviously different story and setting can differ in their similarities to our modern day earth and how much we judge them should be based off of that. A story like Tower of God is so fantastical and fictional where the politics, ecology, cultures and even the physical structure of the world is so different from what we have that it makes sense that the people that inhabit this world would also have different sets of morals and values compared to what we know, so it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to call someone like Yuri, Bam or even White a criminal because in their eyes they have done nothing wrong.
Not all peoples kill in tog or have the moral like peoples called white baam on hidden floor normal habitant were hating killing peoples and same on floor 20 Even somes member team sweet sour doesn't want kill peoples .
If Yuri is a war criminal, imagine Maschenny lol I'm even surprised you didn't mention her or Tiara... they're the ultimate psychos of the series (I still love Maschenny tho) But tbh, killing is a normal thing in the Tower. You don't really have any laws about what people should do and what they shouldn't, and it's not like Zahard or the FHs would care enough about that when some of them don't even care about their own children 🤷♀
Who would I think of when thinking about "criminals" in ToG? The real question would be who wouldn't I think of as a "criminal" in ToG...? If we focus purely on murder, then, as far as I'm aware there's like potentially a single innocent person of that... Rachel, if anyone, lmao. EDIT: Not necessarily psychopaths all of them. Psychopathy is about a lack of guilt and empathy since birth, if anything most of the cast would be socipaths (same as a psychopath, but "made", not "born"), but realistically, most of them are just regular-ish people who have just grown up in a world were all of those acts we deem "criminal" are normal. Much like how at some point in the not too distant past, it was considered normal to burn heretics at the stake, or to own slaves. I'm sure many a character, if raised on earth would not be criminals. White and many of the Khuns we've seen, on the other hand, might still treat the Geneva convention as a checklist
But we all know who's from the main cast isn't war criminal (just a regular one), & it's Rachel (even there she does't allowed to be more than a regular😂).
she isnt this is set in a an fantasy world and its not realistic to compare our reality,culture and society to tower of god, she is suspicious and violent but war criminal as a concept doesnt exist there . all in all there much worse people that can be called that but in the end there is no such things as war criminal there.
two points of consideration. first being that why'll what Yuri did is most definitely a war crime by any modern metric there is not enough info to succinctly call it a genocide. secondly why'll the "just following orders" is usually not a suitable defense there can be no denial that coercion plays a central roll in this case given the treason charges Yuri was facing doe to the last station incident.
If my memory serves me right Evankhell murdered the previous ruler of the floor of test no ? And he/she sent Baam to kill everyone on every battle field they could find for training purposes during the S2 break. I think that's good criminal material right there
Also after all this time she's still pretty Pro-Jahad. Yuri still values her position as a princess and the only reason why she's disregarding the rules is because of Bam. This was made pretty clear with a conversation with Tiara (i think) forgot the chapters tho

Tower of god is a complex world we cant judge people in it by our own standards noone there is a definite good guy or a bad guy,everyone falls into the area of grey, the morality is grey,the motivations are grey amd a lot more. The right and wrong is a very vague concept in and of itself.
People are often forced into or pushed into situations where they feel the necessity to kill people by more powerful people. Yes, low rank regulars may kill people but who is oftenpushing them too? This could in some people mind make higher ups even more guilty like people doing or adminstering tests not less guilty
I never thought about how little life and justice matter in the tower. I can't even blame the people in the tower though because I never cared enough to think about it.. maybe this is to show the depravity in the tower's system under the rule of Zahard and Great Families?
The towrr is corrupted 😂. They are on the protagonist side right now but I think we forgot how evil characters like Yama, Jinsung, Karaka, Yasratcha are. Wangnan and Miseng are the only few remaining pure souls in that tower
It can only be a war crime if there are international laws to attempt to prevent such things…. How can you be a war criminal if there are no laws around but instead a lot of upside to doing horrible things. I feel like the tower heavily promotes this violence
At least it’s better than simping for the literal devil like Yura. But in all honesty, the standard of life in the tower is vastly different from our world. It’s entirely survival of the fittest, which is why the zahard empire can be seen as good because within the rule of the empire, this wanton killing is restrained. Granted there is still abuse of power by the 10F, but random tankers aren’t able to kill on a whim. As shown by yuri ofc, this does not extend to those outside the empire, but you could argue it is at least better than complete lawlessness.
our world have still war all around continent this still restained and sometimes go beyond where World War begin . Same for tog but we just seeing peoples and warrior but normal peoples are living normal life like 20th floor. But obviousky zahard let peoples doing what they want this maximum capitalism system . Like army never acted before baam came after genesis war on big scale .
and on top clearly the whole TOG world imo shouldn't be judged from our modern standards. just about any theme in tog imo, because it's clearly a fantasy world with its own rules and morals and on top like many themes are also culturally different even by our own modern standards, i think some part of fans focus way too much on interpreting and looking at TOG through "American" cultural pov which is a bit strange to do since it's a Korean work with enormous references to its culture and even its modern day societal problems (ex, Hell Joe etc).
