People need to stop thinking of Yuri on ice as “that gay anime about ice skating” and more like “that ice skating anime that the main characters happends to be gay”
The main characters of something never happen to be anything. The authors create with intention. They could've made the characters straight if they wanted to, and still told a beautiful love story. They made the characters gay because they wanted to, it's not something that "just so happened to be". It was a relationship portrayed well and without baiting, but it was still intentional.
My opinion on Yuri On Ice is that the gay representation was pretty good and the ice skating was satisfying to watch. I didn’t like parts of it, but don’t even lie to me, the opening was amazing
I think the point everyone misses is it's not an anime based on relationship of Victor and Yuri. It was an sport anime with a gay-ish couple in it. And opening is AMAZING!!!!!!!!
I think it’s more like: 90% of comments: people who disagree with Yuri on ice 5% of comments: people wondering why he likes Papa to kiss in the dark 5% of comments: other
I honestly liked it because the whole ice skating thing was awesome to me. I’ve never watched an anime about ice skating. It’s the ice dancing that won me over.
Exactly.I loved the animation in the ice skating and the songs won my heart(especial the song about agape, sorry I don't remember the whole name).I found it very interesting actually and I liked Yuri and Viktor's healthy relationship.
I liked the show, but it's frustrating that the story was so rushed. It could have been so much better if they had taken their time with each competition instead of trying to cram everything into 12 episodes.
The main attraction of yuri on ice for me was the character development and the challenges yuri faced, also how yuri realized he wasn’t alone, and victor really did help with that. For me, even though I personally really liked the relationship in it, I loved the development even more.
And I loved the skating routines too. I related a lot to Yuri’s inner struggle to calm down and do his best in competitions, I’ve faced plenty of situations like that :D I thought it was really cool that the characters were based off of actual international figure skaters. And the relationships for me were an interesting detail in the story, but not the main focus for sure.
@@YetMorePlaying Super Lovers was done right though and I'm not just talking about their *ehem heavily intimate scenes but also the characters perspectives, certain conditions of the relationship to be considered and issues of the said questionable relationship between the two (non-blood related) couple; plus from the very beginning it was already stated by the other party what kind of relationship they want from the other person while fully acknowledging the expected consequences to be had and limits needed to remembered. They felt a lot more like two mature self-aware individuals trying to properly make it work than most couples.
@@persephonepomegranate9652 wanna know the sad thing about boku no pico and that whole trilogy of yikes there actually really well animated, and actually really well written and even voice actors are really really good
I think the part about Yuri on Ice that people liked was that it didn't adhere to that uncomfortable yaoi trope of dubious consent where it's like, there's a dom and a sub and the sub gets borderline raped. If you need an example, Sekaiichi Hatsukoi had this problem and it was really uncool. Yuri and Viktor were just kinda .... in a relationship and the show treated it like it was normal. That's literally it. It kinda just seems like that normalized vibe made people happy, it's as simple as that.
Alannah I think graviation had rape (or almost rape), but it involved only one person (the raper was unrelated, and the other person of the couple came to help him). Shukisho also didn't have it, but... still... splited personality isn't for anyone. Betrayel knows my name also has nothing to do with rape. They don't even kiss (thoigh it's obious there's something) So yeah, there are more.
Somehow, I just realize that fact (Yuri on Ice doesn't have the noncon/dubcon rape thing like almost all of bl manga/anime). Thank you. You have opened my eyes lmao
I have a confession, when I first watched Yuri on Ice i barely cared about the Vikturi ship. I loved it because of the characters, humor and the competitions. I’m part of the LGBT community and I don’t really like how especially with yaoi how it’s treated like a fetish. I was happy with YOI because it wasn’t overly sexualized and it was a healthy relationship. It wasn’t incest or violent, it was two people loving each other and that was the beauty of Yuri on Ice.
Yui Sakura Well I’m not a gay man, I’m a bisexual female (actually pan but most people don’t know what that is). Anyway, I can’t speak for them but I can speak as part as the community. From what I can tell we don’t hate yaoi or yuri most of us just hate how it’s looked at like more of a fetish. Gay men are real and aren’t something to be looked at by straight girls cause it’s “hot.” Yaoi is made by women for women, that’s why is kinda screwed up. I like YOI cause it’s actual representation rather then something hyper sexualized. It’s about a healthy relationship between two men who love each other. I wouldn’t even call it yaoi, it’s just a love story.
leilaniart Well, just because it’s portrayed more realistically doesn’t mean it isn’t fetishized by Fujoshi anyway lol. I personally think it’s totally fine to think that way, as a huge fan of Yuri (the genre) myself. I think that very anime way of portraying relationships has some charm to it.
I actually was avoiding Yuri On Ice because eeh, I was more of a shounen person but when I watched it last january, I learnt that I needed a bit of vanilla in my life. Legit cried because of the dog.
I actually love Yuri on Ice for the story, the characters, the evolution. I think the whole theme of figure skating and high level competition interesting, and liked the fact that Yuri isn't the typical overly powerful undestructable men affected by nothing that we see everywhere. I could relate to him. As for the Yuri/Victor part, it wasn't even central to the story. It wasn't exceptionally unusual, but that's why it was great - it was just healthy, and realistic. I'm not LGTBQ, but it felt good to watch a healthy relationship instead of the usual funked up ones with two highly unstable characters - even if the later is more "exiting" on TV.
Anas S my problem with the show was that it was so overhyped and basically shun out every other good series because a good portion of the fanbase were like “OMFG SO HOT BL OMGGG.”
the thing is, like you said, the yaoi part isn’t even the focus, but people did overhype it when the yoi had a lot of other good qualities throughout the season
Nice to see someone isn't just hating on it or watching it only because of the gay stuff. I honestly can't watch an anime about ice skating because, but I don't hate it because I understand why people would like it
Apart from the LGBTQ part of YOI, I just appreciate that it’s one of the only stories that tell real figure skating stories (which is why I liked it because I skate). Like other things are like “I’ve never skated before this but I loved it and then I skated for like ten minutes and I can do a double flip, wow!” And YOI was real and was like “I can do a quad toe but my quad sal is sketchy af. But now nearly a year later my sal and toe are strong and my quad flip is pretty good for only learning it for like eight months!” If you don’t like the LGBTQ representation let’s appreciate the figure skating accuracy that no other media that I’ve seen has done well
I agree with you 100%. The reason i watched that show was because of the figure skating story/theme than the yaoi factor. Also i was extremely fascinated by the fact that so many of the characters on the show were sort of like the actual figure skaters and that for the animation and sound the figure skaters recorded those noises and choreographed it. its my guilty pleasure anime after-all.
26:30 That's definitely not true, at least in my case. I've watched a lot of Yaoi before watching Yuri on Ice and I can say with certainty that Yuri on Ice is up there as one of the best. I think what appeals to a lot of people, at least to me, is the way the relationship is presented in comparison to many other LGBTQ themed anime. Yuri on Ice portrays a healthy, un-fetishized relationship between two people unlike many of the other LGBTQ themed anime that have elements of abuse, both physically and mentally, incest and over-sexualisation.
@@viki7268 Yeah, true. Probably should have worded that differently. It's just that, in this video, Joey was comparing Yuri on Ice to a lot of yaoi. I was just trying to get my point across that Yuri on Ice is better than a lot of those.
Scarlette Chanelle so true. Most people actually really like the anime for everything it is. The fact that they had a healthy relationship (gay or not) was just an added bonus. The relationship had very little to do with the anime itself but was still amazing. But the whole story was just amazing and inspiring and you can never forget that absolutely beautiful opening!
Yuri on Ice was far from being my first "shounen-ai" type anime, (I've been a fujoshi for more than a decade) but the reason I still found it kinda special and different was the way the "romance" was "nothing special." It wasn't the main focus of the story, it felt quite casual and there wasn't any real drama around it, type "oh my god, but he's a man, I can't, we shouldn't, no...anh~"... Also no one in the background is going "oh my god, but they're men, they can't, they shouldn't, no... eew". It was quite refreshing. But I think it's "cute with a lot of flaws", not OHMYGAWD BEST ANIME OF THE MILLENIUM!! So I would agree with "too much hype" and "fangirls need to chill."
as a lesbo, the representation of just their cute n warm relationship was great. it was too hyped n i hate that fangirls were just like obsessing over it for the wrong reasons, but im still glad it got the attention
I know this video is almost two years old, but here are my opinions on Yuri on Ice. Yuri on Ice is not a Yaoi. There was nothing sexually explicit about their relationship. Now that that's off the table, I actually liked the representation in the show because it wasn't *the entire purpose of the show.* Victor and Yuri's relationship was kind of a secondary part of the show. It's an anime about men's figure skating... That being said, I agree with a lot about what you said about the show. The show definitely has flaws, and people need to see that!
He only mentioned the gay part and then compared it to yaoi which is stupider. He didn’t mention the music, the damn figure skating, or the character development of Yuuri and Yuri.
But I feel like most of the community watch it because it have BL in it. I actually decided to watch yuri on ice because of the yaoi AT FIRST but ended up falling with the ice skating. Though I must be honest with you that if it was a straight relationship I might not even click it and never know the beauty of ice skating because of it. Since the yaoi part is the one that attracts a lot of people's curiosity I think it is fair for Joey to criticize on the yaoi part
@@souko3455 ive always loved skating. I got the hang of it the first time i went on ice. I also liked sports manga/anime. Probably my reasons why i watched this.
@@ohhello6427 Yes ofc there will be people who watch purely for the ice skating, but I believe most watch it for the yaoi I mean look at the huge ass fandom. But this doesn't mean yuri on ice is all about the yaoi. The ice skating and music is also very beautiful. I just want to say that it is quite normal for people to judge the yaoi part since most of the fandom focused more into it
Here's the thing about YoI's relationship - the POINT was not to make it special, or make it stand out, but to rather show that the relationship between two guys can progress very normally and typically (shoujo cliches withstanding). And even then, to me, the focus of the show was still the sport itself. Yes there are two canonically gay characters there. Yes they got together. But its still a story about a skater on the brink of retirement making a comeback with the help of a coach who just so happens to be the person he idolises. (Note: YoI is primarily a sports anime. Not Yaoi/Shounen-ai. Not Romance. SPORTS.)
L10 F0T14 I couldn’t even really get into Citrus. It wasn’t that interesting and I actually totally forgot I started that until I watched this lol. But with Yuri on ice, I was watching it when it first came out and I was super excited for the next episode and was looking forward to it. I had my friend update me when she saw a new episode come out. Yuri on ice had my full attention when I put it on and I would sing and/or dance to the opening. It was very enjoyable
@@amberb.6395 Same here! I've been a huge fan of YOI for years and because it was fully released when I watched it I just binged it over a week easily but with Citrus I got three episodes in and,,, dropped it. YOI in general is a great anime but citrus is,,, kinda garbage NGL,,,
L10 F0T14 totally agree. Yuri on ice actually excited me from the moment it started. I swear it’s that opening lol. But yeah, I think I got maybe 2 episodes in on Citrus before I dropped it. It really want that interesting. Yuri on ice just has something there that captures your attention and the story keeps it there
How exactly does Papa to Kiss in the Dark "do the LGBT thing so much better"? I mean they are father and son... Still I totally agree otherwise. There are way better yaoi series, and as far as I am concerned Yuri on Ice is closer to a sports anime than a yaoi. I mean have you seen literally any other sports anime? I swear they all have mild homoerotic undertones.
The reason why yuri on ice is as popular as it is, is simply that it portrays a realistic, healthy gay relationship, that doesn’t take over the entire plot. Because real relationships don’t take over someone’s entire life like it seems to do in anime, yuri has a life outside of being gay, he’s a figure skater and THATS the main focus. There’s obviously been yaoi anime but they’re never realistic because it’s just akin to fan fiction. If there is an anime that portrays a realistic, healthy, gay relationship then tell me about it. But I can’t even recall a straight relationship in anime that’s portrayed in a realistic light
Or maybe some girls just like seeing two good looking dudes do what ever the fuck they do. I don't care since I enjoy yuri and I like watching two good looking girls do whatever the fuck they do. No hate
Alan Kao completely valid reason to enjoy something. like why criticize anime on being not special while lots of people have different reasons that make one anime special to them
FUCKING EXACTLY!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! I feel like so many people are hating on so many anime just because it was apparently "shit" but they don't dig deeper to see why it would appeal to some other audiences. I mean, I genuinely enjoyed sao not because it was fantastic but the idea of a op protag in a virtual world! Don't know about you but that's pretty cool to me.
I totally agree with you! Yuri on Ice was the first anime I watched that had a healthy and realistic romantic relationship. Not only a healthy gay relationship, but a healthy romantic relationship in general. When it comes to romance in anime/manga (it doesn't matter if is yuri, yaoi, shonen ai, shoujo ai or shoujo) most of times the unrealistic and unhealthy relationships are romanticized. Now I know a few others animes/mangas that portrayed healthy relationships as well. But Yuri on Ice was the first I ever saw do it and became popular because of it.
OK AMANDA umm, no. It clearly states their ages in the anime and I’m pretty sure all of them are at least 20 or over. If not, all of them are over 18. I haven’t watched the anime in a couple years but I know they are all of age
SimplyRachel oh right! I almost forgot about that. Like I said, it’s been a few years since I’ve watched it. Good thing I ship Yuri and Viktor the most lol. I didn’t really ship Yurio and Otabek that much. Very good friends though
I think yoi was upraised not because of its exciting relationship but its a realistic relationship. I'd like to see something representing a community that may (key word here mates, may)feel misrepresented more accurate over exciting and that's why I believe it is regarded as highly as it is.
Agreed. A realistic LGBTQ relationship in anime is really boring, tbh. The more Hollywood type romances are extremely far away from what the reality is. YOI just showed two dudes in love. And to some people they got all upset and we're like "this isn't yaoi?!?!!" "Where's the lack of consent and stereotypical sensei and kouhai relationship" Yeah.....real gay guys aren't like that. We're arguably pretty boring. It's not super glamorous and you often can't pick out couples just from a random lineup. There are extremely muscley guys that only want to be fucked and dominated by fat glitter covered feminine dudes with below average dicks. Everyone's different and that's perfectly fine. It's honestly kind of toxic for so many straight women to be so into a INCREDIBLY SPECIFIC and UNREALISTIC depiction of gay relationships. Not just some of us, but MOST of us are not like that, like, at all.
spiderdude2099 - It's not toxic to like yaoi as long as you understand that it has really little to do with real life, it's only fantasies. Also I'm not sure for today's young girls but my generation has been told forever that "domination is hot" (over women of course). Just watch any Harrison Ford movie, for example. He's supposed to be hot and sexy, he makes his move, the girl steps back, says "no", he forces her into a kiss and now she's just melting because she "secretly wanted it all along." Those scenes are not supposed to feel creepy, there made to be sexy and "passionate", and you take them as such. It's really hard not to get influenced by what you see on tv growing up and a lot of romantic scenes in tv shows and movies depict this kind of domination or violence and a general lack of consent. So just like our sense of beauty is shaped from society since our birth, so is what we think "love" or "flirt" is supposed to be. But then you grow up and realize that no, when a guy makes his move and ignores you if you say no, it's not sexy... Still, it's hard to get totally rid of a lesson well learned, so we still feel kinda hot if it's a "dream guy" on paper. (Though I personally prefer my guys in yaoi to be on a more equal footing with fun, bubbly relationships.) ^^
Møca Lykke Yeah that's fair. I think gay or straight we are influenced lot by the media about what "romance" is or looks like. I know not all women or men think any of its real. It's mainly meant to entertain. However, I do think some people take things way too far and start seeing relationships and yaoi undertones in everything. It's really unhealthy for 2 straight male friends to be told by society that any deeply emotional moment between them is "gay" or a "bromance". There's nothing wrong with two straight males being friendly and emotionally open with each other. And unfortunately because people jump to saying stuff like that is "gay" way too easily, they get embarrassed and see it as something to be avoided because unfortunately in today's society, doing something that people call "gay" is seen as negative and something to be avoided. It just further encourages straight men to be emotionally out of touch towards everyone they know.
See, I would have strongly disagreed with that title. But then I discovered the Masterpiece known as Banana Fish. Something that came out over 30 years ago
I’m going to be honest I found yuri on ice a very emotional anime (I cried a lot) the animation was nice and the relationship of yuri and Victor it was always light and cute.
XII-CYBER couldn’t agree more. I watched it when it was first coming out and holy crap. This anime had me laughing one minute and crying the next. Sometimes at the same time lol. It was just absolutely beautiful. The opening, the art, the relationships were just a plus. Actually, Yuri and Victors relationship wasn’t supposed to happen. It just did because it was so natural and that’s what I love about it. I never heavily focused on the relationship aspect of it, although my friends talked about it a bit when we talked about the anime. I just loved the opening, the art style, and the story so much
Jane Rain No one honestly cares if you’re part of the LGBT except for other members, and constantly telling people that you’re part of that community like that’s all you were about really does annoy people, not because they hate gays or bi’s or lesbians or trans, it’s because that’s all you ever talk about no one wants to talk about the same subject for the rest of their life
Same here! Honestly, I do like Yuri on Ice, just mostly for the side characters, the interaction/character dynamics between the characters but not for the Victor×Yuri ship. And No. 6 is pretty good! I loved it! I really enjoyed the way the relationship builds/develops between the main characters while they don't neglect the story and mystery for the sake of the relationship, nor do they make the female "love rival" (Safu) a hateful person just because she likes one of the main characters (Shion). Sure, she have parts where she could be disliked but overall, she is a affectionate person who cares deeply about the ones she love.
The reason YOI was so special to a lot of fans is that it showcased a healthy LGBT+ relationship which has been lacking in a lot of shounen ai/yaoi anime. Yuri and Viktor could rely on one another and grow together and were respectful of one another. There wasn't the usual tropes of non-con or dub-con that are so prevalent in a lot of shounen ai/yaoi. LGBT+ people could relate to Viktor and Yuri and say, ok that's a relationship I could want or aspire to. The relationships in Gravitation and (especially) Papa to Kiss were not healthy relationships (one pretty abusive and the other incestuous). Banana Fish is a great show but the relationship is part of a much larger overarching plot and the end.. is.. well you know how it goes if you've seen it. YOI ends on a happy note with Viktor and Yuri able to move forwards. That's not to say other anime won't do a better job in the future (Already Given is amazing!) There's also shows like No. 6 and Doukyusei which preceded YOI which have solid relationships. YOI really was just the first breakout series that had a normal relationship between two people who just happened to both be men.
i would’ve been fine with the yoi opinion if you didn’t recommend an incest anime and yeah, yoi definitely isn’t special, but it was very fascinating how they incorporated something like ice skating to make it like an aspect of a romantic relationship. and imo, i wasn’t even that invested in the ship. the art, the music, and the other characters are also part of why yuri on ice was special to some of the fans
Papa to kiss in the dark as a "good representation of an lgbt relationships".... was a joke right? A show were.. SPOILERSWARNING: where a plot point is the guys angst over whether or not he's not committing incest/pedophilia with his real father is a reason for him to be upset?!?! thats a joke right???
I hope so. YOI's LGT+ appeal is how natural and how little of a detail they made Yuri and Viktor's BL was. I won't call it yaoi since it is a pure and non-sexual romance.
Have you seen/read Gravitation? I mean, wow, emotional manipulation galore. Apparently, the mutually consensual relationship in YOI isn't considered interesting because the characters don't go uber-angsty.
1983 manga Banana Fish’s relationship between Ash Lynx and Eiji Okumura was the damn most wholesomest, realistic lgbt+ relationship I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing, and tbh it tops Victor and Yuri any day!
what about the anime? i've never watched/read banana fish and i would like to watch the anime if its good. and if the relationship is better than victor and yuri, i would love to see it! update: i watched it a few weeks after making this reply and i wholeheartedly agree. this anime is definitely in my top 5 favorites
I mean I'd love to put it as better than Viktor and Yuuri but the anime has the Bury Your Gays trope. Like...I love it. Its great but ffs why can't gay people ever be happy?
I’m late to this rodeo but I liked YOI for the representation of Yuri’s anxiety and how not only Victor but his family and friends helped him with that. I saw so much of myself in Yuri that I laughed the hardest in my life at a show. I also cried the hardest in my life at a show. The relationship Yuri and Victor had you may debate is cliche but the BL community struggles a lot with unhealthy relationships in their stories and AT LEAST Victor was non-abusive and supportive of Yuri in his quest to be the best ice skater he could be. You don’t have to like YOI but I’ll be damned if I sit by let you compare it to Papa to Kiss in the dark. Gravitation was my first BL anime and I also adore it but the relationship is also unhealthy in that one so yeah..... I get your point Joey, sometimes things are hyped because of the gay and I feel that with some comics and/or manga I read but YOI as far as I’m concerned is special and I will sing it praises until my dying breath.
does joey have seen yuri on ice completely? cause it doesn’t look like he has watch it completely. cuz boi, papa to kiss in the dark better the yoi??????
Joey doesn't give a fuck holy shit I didn't expect him to mention that at all. The uke is like 15 years old and the seme is like twice that age and he thinks it's better? LMAO
Doukyuusei is outstanding and I hope you get the chance to watch/review the film! It deserves much more popularity than it received and is probably the best BL out there (unique art and animation, quirky personalities that deviate slightly from established tropes, and it's lighthearted, sweet, comedic) 💕
"there's better animes that represent same sex relationships better, here is some recommendations!!" Me: oh? like no. 6? doukyuusei maybe? "Papa to kiss in the dark" Me: wait...... what the hELL
tbh n6 wasn't that good. i enjoyd it and liked nezumi's and shion's(if i remember their names right lol) relationship but yuri on ice is still better that n6
yuri on ice was the first anime i ever saw. I honestly love it. I do respect everyone's opinions, but i didn't just watch yoi for the lgbtq+ representation. I was drawn to it for some reason and as soon as I heard the opening I was like "ok, im definitely watching this." I really love it, although it couldve been a bit better. however, it made me feel better about myself, being pan. I didnt know how to come out and I felt super uncomfortable and I wasn't sure what to do. yoi gave me a sense of courage ig? idk how to put it but yeah. it helped me feel more confident to be myself. I respect your opinion, joey. I just wanted to share mine too. anyway goodbye!! its like 4 am and I just became a huge fan of joey and I saw this video and I was like ooohhhhh nooooo. but yeah, I completely get it.
yoi sure wasnt the first gay anime but it is like the first mainstream, well received anime which contains a not-fetishised-totally-normalised gay relationship. a massive step for _japan_ . disregarding that is pretty dangerous
The problem is it is too ambiguous in the sense that they didn't make it explicit. If we are going for a homosexual relationship, then let's go for it instead some swings here and there
@@cojinmango I don't understand why people are complaining on the ambiguous representation of LGBTQ+ relationship in YOI. First and foremost YOI is a sports anime, it isn't an anime that's centered towards the relationship aspect of the plot. We literally see Katsuki grow as a character on shaping who he is as a figure skater. It doesn't need to be explicit about their relationship at all. Second of all, if the producer actually followed your advice on making it "explicit", safe to say that YOI wouldn't have gained this much attention and you wouldn't even know it existed. YOI would've been put in a time slot like 2 or 3 AM in Japan, because it wouldn't be appropriate for the general audience. The writers had to go out of their way to show LGBTQ+ representation in a famous medium in an otherwise conservative country. I guess they should apologize for not feeding you with enough yaoi content. Heck, YOI is literally in part of the minority that had LGBTQ+ elements in it, that isn't absolute shit in animation, because no big animation company would fund this if there's some conflict in time slots, meaning less profit.
@sofie rossussy @Mango I was honestly confused if they were in a relationship or if the various scenes were a form of fanservice until it was brought to my attention after the show ended. I think it should have been explicit meaning "not vague". I think saying directly "I love you" would have been enough to clear that vagueness for me and some of my friends who were also confused. Of course actions can speak louder than words, and when I thought about it yes their actions are pretty romanticized. But that acknoledgment would solidify those actions even more. But maybe even that would be too much for the general audience.
@@KATinBLACK Representation of the LGBTQ+ in mainstream media is still rather taboo in most Asian countries, and this includes Japan. Tbh I'd also love to see some form of acknowledgement that they are romantically involved, but I can understand why the director chose to go about the show in a roundabout way.
100% agree my dude. I know that show is SO FUCKING BAD and sometimes frustrating to watch but I still enjoyed the first season on some level. It is still fun to shit on though lol.
yuri on ice is way more deep than people see it as. it goes over depression and anxiety, the mental exhaustion of professional skating, the animation, etc
Why is the focus for Yuri on Ice on the LGBTQ factor and not that it's about ice skating? That's what I enjoyed it for. The inner demons the characters faced. The moving music. The motivations and goals that drove the characters to competitive figure skating. Maybe the hate comes from getting stuck on one aspect of it instead of enjoy it as a whole?
Not gonna lie, my brother got me to watch it and afterwards I was like "That was barely shonen Ai, that was just a cool sportsanime" Also JJ should've won
Yeah, it gets pretty annoying when people just slap their dicks all over the place and act as if that's what the show's all about when they support it so much.
Papa to kiss in the dark...really? I mean gravitation is my all of favourite BL Anime, Shuichi best boy! Even though the Animation and the Manga has its own quality, I guess...xD But I really, really love it and will always love it...BUT! Papa to kiss in the dark is never ever better a BL representation than Yuri!! On Ice! I mean, I watched and loved Yuri On Ice, too´, but I can see where the opinion is coming and I can think of many BL manga/ Anime which could be better, then it would be: -Vassalord (Sooo underrated!!!! Please read the manga!) -Mo dao zu Shi -Given -No.6 -Kizuna -Hybrid Child -Ai no Kusabi (Althought it's very kinky, but I love Riki-Boy) -Yami no Matsuei (Manga is better) -Lesson XX -Zetsuai (Buuuut it's veeery psychological, but kinda realistic, too I guess) -and much more... Althought I think that Yuri on Ice is not a bad anime or overrated. I think the Anime deserves its hype, because beside the BL respresentation it has its own animation qualities. So much was worked on, every Ice skating scene and choreograph was very detailed prepared. The music is sooo good and I get, that the relationship between Yuri and Viktor seems at first kinda forced, but maybe because not many get the rich russian charme, I guess? I can fucking tell you, that Viktors behaivour is so clishee russian, it hurt my stomache of laughter, because it's so true! I know some rich russian uncles, aunts etc. And they were kinda the same, when it comes to be very touchy, flirty and spontaneously... I got to knew the sister of my aunt, who lives in Russia, but kinda decided to visit us - like: "Uhm, I'm kinda bored...let's travel to Germany! I book high class and VIP of course!" Or a relative of my mother, who has a mansion. Travels like six - seven times all around the world per year - again very spontaniously. So Viktors characteristic is very rich russian and the anime represented it very well. Like Yuris bevhaivour is clishee japanese. But the show could combine those two culture together in such a beautiful way. Like I said, I understand the opinion and also that people think it's forced, but for someone who has many russian relatives I can say, that the Anime is not overrated. Overhyped - maybe - because fans can be very... yeah, but the show itsself is very good. The comment wasn't supposed this long, but I kinda felt deep to the writing...xD So I guess no ones gonna read it anyway.
if people only focus on the gay part of YOI doesnt that make it a mediocre anime at best? The gayness of an anime shouldnt be the only part that makes a show good. In that case, any crappy show with two guys kissing would be considered good.
You make a good point but YOI is more than just being gay. It's just the fandom memeing about it so much, well..."half-memeing" because it is very much not far from the truth but still the point still stands that YOI is more than what the fandom jokingly say it is.
As a yuri fan, I was a bit taken aback when Joey said that Citrus is a good LGBT representation, because it's far from it (though I do agree that the manga is actually good). There's MUCH BETTER LGBT/Yuri representation such as *Bloom Into You* (manga, with upcoming anime in Fall), *Asagao to Kase-san* (manga with a recent and a really good OVA), *After Hours* (manga), *Aoi Hana* , *Comic Girls* and heck, even *Yuru Yuri* . It's kinda a similar case with YOI, it's one of the more popular yuri but that doesn't mean it's a good representation.
I love kase-san! And true what he recommended isn’t the best, especially for lgbt rep, but there’s nothin wrong with people likin it. I know people like problematic relationships but I hope they understand they aren’t the best rep
perlen omg YES I love bloom into you so fucking much it’s legit my favorite manga. And asagao San to kase San had such a nice ova and defitky had enough content for a 10 episode anime if they FUCKIG WANTED TO MAKE IT
Just because you don't like Yuri on Ice DOES NOT mean that you don't like the LGBTQ community. It's just like how even if you dislike a movie with a strong female lead, that doesn't mean you dislike strong female lead characters. It just means that you happened to dislike this one yaoi show out of the MANY yaoi shows out there. If you dislike it purely BECAUSE the relationship was gay, then that's a problem. But if you just dislike the show, then there are many reasons you can have that opinion and people shouldn't get so triggered by it.
The Queen of Happiness you’re right, but it’s gay. yuri on ice also isn’t BL/yaoi/shounen ai but most people label it as “yaoi” because it’s gay. whether that’s right or wrong the word yaoi is mostly used to describe gay mlm anime...
b C it’s stated by the author that Ash and Eiji are indeed in love, but not sexual... the reason is Ash is too tired of sex. I mean who doesn’t after all trauma he’s going through 😔 it’s stated numerous time on the show how much they love each other (heck, both are ready to die for each other). It’s true even until the last scene it’s never stated they are lovers (Ash said he’s enough with the feel of befriend with Eiji without really being his friend). But then again... their love is so pure, they are practically soulmate 😭💕
I will agree that Yuri On Ice isn't special in regards to the lgbtq+ representation. What's unique about this show is that it doesn't CENTER around the relationship like many yaoi and yuri shows, it's simply a sub-story that affects the main story. I'll give an example: Love Stage is about a guy who fell for another guy thinking it was a girl and the story revolves around that, with Izumi's dream of being a mangaka kinda in the background. Yuri On Ice is mainly about Yuri's growth as an ice skater with the more romantic parts being quite subtle and not really the main focus. That's pretty much normalizing lgbt relationships, which is something few shows, anime or not, do. Other than that, the animation, music and characters are all enjoyable. Yeah, it's not the best at representing, but it damn does the job of normalizing gay relationships.
Kathryn Kiefer well, that happens too. Some people are more into the romantic side of a show, that's why shipping exists in every single fandom. The story of Yuri On Ice is simple and inspiring, so finding interest in other parts of the show makes sense.
OrbitalForce YT 1. Because straight couples are normal as is, aren't they? 2. It would make no sense in the story if Viktor was a girl for example. Male and female ice skating competitions happen at different times so it would make no sense for Viktor not to compete. 3. Hot Spring scene.
The thing is, Yuri on Ice isn’t classified as yaoi or shounen-ai and it’s not based on ugly stereotypes like incest, pedophilia or sexual harassment (Citrus, Papa). The relationship between Yuri and Victor was showered as equal and loving without any sexual content which is also common for most of the shows that includes LGBT couples. It was special because sport animes don’t include any LGBT couples especially within the main protagonists. The development of their relationship might’ve veen a little bit cliche but who cares, it was a good, healthy development and as a LGBT person I really appreciate that.
This is exactly how I feel about it. It's special because it didn't follow the tropes that tend to haunt same sex relationships in anime and manga. Sometimes nothing special is exactly what you need to make it special.
I like when shows (anime or not) make a couple gay and don't even mention it, that's normalizing. We don't need parades, pride days, SPECIAL events... we just need to normalize what is natural. And Yuri on Ice did that GREAT. :3
something being entertaining and something being good rep are not the same thing and that's why you're YoI take is a 0/10. For example, Citrus is one of my favourite Yuri series of all time. I enjoyed it and thought it had a great story. But I, an avid anime viewer, am very desensitized to the step sister/pseudo-incest dynamic because it's not new in an industry where straight up incest happens. It would not be very good for rep. Representation is important and meant to represent a normal, functional relationship that doesn't have some kinkyesque subplot. That's what Yuri On Ice!!! did really well in. My favourite anime movie, Doukyuusei, is something I highly recommend people check out. Not only is that animation beautiful, but it's really good representation. They aren't step siblings or anything, they're teenagers doing teenage stuff but also dating. I also heard Banana Fish is really good but I haven't got around to watching it.
Burc Banterman not the point i was trying to make in this comment here. i was talking about this guys gross misunderstanding of representation and thinking a dad fucking his son is good rep lol. but why is it wrong to think representation is important? never said it makes a show good. like, a show can have phenomenal animation but the writing can be fucking shit. representation, for me at least, is one of those things i can critique a bit of animated media for. like the animation, the art style, the music, voice acting, character design, etc. i just add representation on that list
The reason is I love Zero Two but I also think that Darling in The Franxx is an awful show. People always think that's contradictory and don't seem to really care about that opinion. Thus I think its an unpopular opinion. I can say that for many other characters as well.
Well I think Yuri on Ice isn't just about the relationship between yuri and victor... I heard that it was one of very few anime about figure skating and that it was really appreciatedby figure skaters like Evgenia Medvedeva.. so I don't think we should see yuri on ice just for it's gayness, I believe there are anime that do it as good as yuri on ice or better, but we should also see the rest of it and I really liked the show for figure skating (and I'm gay myself lol)
Okay, a lot if people might not believe this. I've watched Yuri on ice a couple of times and I am only just finding out that Viktor and Yuri were a couple. Yeah I know they kissed once, but the fact that it was never talked about again and everyone just pretended like it never happened it made me think Viktor was just so happy that he kissed Yuri. I know it sounds crazy but I'm serious 😂
When I first watched it I didn’t even know they got engaged, I quite literally thought they were exchanging good luck rings platonically. That my fault tho I’ve watched many other shows without knowing characters were in love
I HIGHLY recommend Banana Fish for those who want to see a greatly represented lgbt relationship in an anime. It also has an amazing storyline and a very good soundtrack.
@@moimoiyoop I get what you are saying, but Banana Fish isn't an anime/manga that fetishes rapes. The scenes in which Ash gets raped or sexual assaulted are seen as bad. The anime is indeed wholesome, it is a great work of art. If you dropped this masterpiece because of how Ash was treated, then I'm sorry, you didn't understand a damn thing about the whole story. The fact that this anime brings up the severe problem of male prostitution is a fucking important concept, because nobody talks about it. This anime/manga doesn't centers its story about romance (even if there are sweet and tenders moments between him and Eiji), and this is what makes it special. The relationship between Ash and Eiji isn't forced throughout the whole thing, it is more a background element. All the rape scene were not put in there as fap material, they just serve as a way to make people understand what Ash went through his childhood and what he must go through now that he is a teenager. Most of the enemies in the anime/manga know how he used to be Dino's "pet", and used this information to take advantage of his body, since they see him as nothing more than a prostitute who knows how to use a gun. I hope you change your mind and decide to give the anime a chance, because it is definitely worth it.
@@moimoiyoop If you want light love between boys I suggest Thai dramas, they are literally the sweetest thing you'll ever watch. One example is Two Moons, if you have never watched it I suggest you look it up! Lastly, what I wanted to say about Banana Fish is that it's important to understand that it shows a little piece of reality that nobody cares about, the hardships that these two boys had to go through, there is just so much more than rape, which isn't the plotpoint of the whole thing. But, everyone has tastes, I just really wanted to explain what this anime really focuses on. Also I hope my English doesn't suck too much otherwise I've written a poem for nothing
YOI is one of my favourite animes atm, but I do have to admit there's something very plain and very average about it. I loved Yuuri's character bc he goes through big character development and I think that's really inspiring. He's sweet and talented and I like him a lot. Viktor on the other hand...there's something artificial about him. I do like him, but there's something very unlikeable and off-putting about his character. Anyway, Banana Fish (NOT a yaoi ffs) is a show that portrays a romantic relationship b/t two men that goes beyond the physical. Like I imagine Ash to be the kinda dude who, if somebody asked him what does he love about Eiji, he wouldn't say _his sparkling eyes. His beautiful face. His bangin body_ or some shit like that that you find in yaoi. He'd probably say he loves Eiji's fearlessness, willingness to learn, kindness, and ability to judge somebody on the basis of their merit. And I have no doubt Eiji would say he loves Ash's leadership skills, complete selflessness, and honesty. My point is that Ash and Eiji don't need to kiss or have sex for their relationship to be romantic. It's the way they check in on each other, communicate with each other, listen to each other, help each other out, and understand each other. They would die for each other. They stay loyal to each other to the very end. *THAT IS FUCKING LOVE.* For these boys, a physical relationship isn't necessary. In fact it hardly exists. But that only enhances the emotional connection they share, and that's why I find Banana Fish to be one amazing, fantastic show that portrays romance without it necessarily being romantic. Doukyuusei is also incredible. It's slow, passionate, sweet, heart-warming, and profound. It's like an obligatory romance--the characters come together because they're required by the laws of nature to. They compliment each other. They're nervous. They're unsure. They're realistic. They don't fall in love quick, but when they're in the slew of things, they are in the fucking slew of things. It's gorgeous and I love it. Rant over, send tweet
AWMdiva499 your description of banana fish and asheiji perfectly captured everything i’ve ever wanted to say about them. ash and eiji’s relationship will personally remain my forever favorite (like, not just in anime or manga, but across all forms of media and even in real life relationships), i really haven’t seen any other beyond-friendship relationships like theirs that doesn’t rely on a physical connection. i think yoi did a good job at portraying a mlm relationship without sexualizing it (unlike all other yaoi anime do), but... for me, ash and eiji’s relationship is... on a whole different level. that thing you said about them, that if they were to compliment each other it would be on personality traits and not physical features, it’s true and it just shows how “platonic” bonds can be just as fulfilling and beautiful as relationships with physical bonds. they are truly, in all aspects, soulmates, their souls are one, they’re spiritually connected, and that’s what soulmates really mean. that’s also what “platonic” relationships actually mean, as the word was founded and first defined by plato, but people just use t nowadays to label mere friendships. i wish i had a relationship like theirs’ irl but it’s never gonna happen, sigh...
Ash Hanok Lol same bro. I've actually watched all the yaois he recommended heads up if you go out to watch papa to kiss in the dark yoi is still better. Gravitation though is really good and i recommend that 100%! 😁
I don't exactly hate YOI, but I agree with Joey; there are better yaoi and yuri anime/manga/even doujins out there. YOI was just very heavily hyped compared to the others.
So here's the thing... Yaoi has always had a very strong rape culture, which a lot of people are sick of. I think people were just finally happy to see a yaoi about two guys who genuinely fall in love, and not just because the uke got Stockholm syndrome. Sure, it's not the first of it's kind that did that, but pair the cute relationship with men who ice skate, great music, and a beautiful opening animation, and the fans (Including myself) go wild. The fact that you would think an anime about incest represents the LGBT community better is a little ridiculous. Yuri!!! On Ice might not be the best representation either, but I'm damn positive that it's better than Papa To Kiss In The Dark, or Citrus. Both of which I have seen.
What about Yarichin bitch club, no rape, doesn’t pretend it’s something else than it is, just straight sex 😂 (soon getting an OVA) Ten count, fucking amazing. No rape, gonna get an anime adoptation. hitorijime my hero, the age difference is meh but overall it’s nice. No rape. Then we could go on, but yeah overall it’s a strong rape culture. Especially in the omega verse series.
Ten count seemed kind of rapey to me because black haired dude kept touching red haired dude even after he kept saying stop... that was towards the beginning of their relationship
Agreed - As much as I love Yuri On Ice, it could have been represented a little bit better, there are still scenes where I question Viktor's actions in which NO ONE in this comment section has mentioned that I've seen so far. But yeah at least it's better than Citrus and Papa To Kiss In The Dark o.o Hopefully there will be a more wholesome anime with lgbt representation in future with no nudity, and no fetishy rape kinda thing - something that aint NSFW to summarise it. Apparently Doukyuusei is good but haven't got around to watching it since it's a movie. Hate my attention span sometimes.
it's not special to you, but this rep is so hard to come by that it's nice to see and easy to latch onto. It's not just crazy fangirls who like this show. Just let us have this lol
13:00 Yep, I went to Japan and a young High School Boy interviewed me. He was practicing his english and asked me why I was interested in japan and I told him I liked anime. Not too sure if it's because of how i said it but he was confused by my answer. I'm now understanding that it's probably because they consider western stuff as anime too, so if I just say I came to japan for anime they won't understand and will say, "Don't you have anime in North America too?". I finally understand now as to why I had to specify. In the end I just told him, "Japanese culture" because honestly, if i wasn't into anime I still would have gone to Japan, the place is amazing.
Yuri on ice was a really well animated sports anime representing an untapped sport, and had a really nice soundtrack. The relationship wasn't that great though.
As a gay kid, Yuri on Ice is special to me. I know it's not the first or best gay series, it's the most mainstream and accessible one. I also find it funny and cute and I like its story.
I totally agree with your opinion on Yuri on Ice, The hype made it good but their relationship was lacking. Personally I like Doukyuusei, an anime movie about two male classmates falling in love, a lot better because their relationship is realer. Yuri on Ice was lacking in the representation department and there are better shows with better representation. That might be an unpopular opinion but it's true
Sometimes when i think an anime is boring, I just tell myself its because i have depression and lose interest in things i usually find enjoyable. I just lie to myself
