For this past Garifuna Settlement Day, we start with the Garifuna phrase au bun amuru nu (I for you, you for me).
This video takes place in Seine Bight, a Garifuna village at the heart of the Placencia Peninsula in Belize.
Pinched by real estate development on either side, it has remained true to the culture while struggling to build a future for its youths. It is a proud, resilient community. One that shows you don’t need a lot to be happy, to maintain one’s culture, traditions and the promise to the ancestors.
When I travel to Placencia, this is one of my anticipated stops. Mrs. Agnes Ramirez makes one of the best bundiga dish in Belize. And during Battle of the Drums competition in Peini, Punta Gorda, the young people of Seine Bight always compete with energy and high skill.
