A gay Jew speaking at a Soros-funded university in central Europe about the benefits of nationalism... What a weird timeline that we are in... Also: first Milo, now this guy... It really worries me that to point out the good in nationalist ideas and not have your career destroyed you apparently have to be gay AND jewish AND famous. Only the combo of these buffs will make you impervious to political correctness

As much as I bow down to Mr. Harari, as a "third culture kid", I'm not quite sure how to think about his argument that nationalism makes us care about strangers... I grew up moving to a new country every five years (From Germany to Indonesia, India etc.). Do I feel nationalistic about any country? No. Does that make me not care about strangers? No. In line with Harari's argument, my experience taught me that my own "tribe" / my family are the most important people (I guess even nationalists might think so). But beyond that I care about people of all nations equally - not just those of "my own country", so I would argue my lack of nationalism generally made me more empathetic. Alternatively perhaps the argument that nationalism helps us prioritize which people to care about based on proximity, is closer to the truth.

He said nationalism makes people care for strangers when compared with what we had before nationalism emerged. Of course, it doesnt mean that being nationalistic is the only way to care for strangers. I lived my entire life in brazil, but i feel the same way you do

A nation is a team, and hence a locus of pride. That's why nationalism works. Harari doesn't make a solid case for the viability of globalism.
@themsuicjunkies
@themsuicjunkies 4 года назад
The only viability he offered is the only one that is. That is that you can't have local/ national solutions to supranational, global and existencial problems. It just wont work. Cooperation and empathy its the only logical chooice. Thats basically why we are fuck, because its too hard and there are many reasons for it to be imposible. Maybe climate change when problems arise, it already be too late but i can imagine the world cooperating till its bitter end. But Technological disruption is gonna be just impossible to regulate, prevent abuse and complete monopolies, not to say anything about creating truly universal( global) safety networks for people that you wont ever meet and have nothing in common with you.

I live in Brazil, where a so called nationalist conservative became president. One of the catchphrases, from his presidential running, was "Brazil above all, God above everything". He was elected as part of this nationalist wave which hit South America as it did in Europe. Now, in his first year on office, every week we know by the media about some act of nepotism or patrimonialism of this person. As an example, he used to give some office jobs to friends and friends's relatives, made use of a national aircraft for personal reasons and, lately, are trying to give a post as embassator to one of his sons. At this point, It would be very embarrassing someone insisting that he is a symbol of nationalism, haha.

Please develope basic ideas of how we could cooperate on a global level - in a kind of global Accordance, Deal, Treaty, Alliance - with specific instiutions allowing the even smaller regions (1-5 mio) to maintain and foster their traditional culture, and still connect peacefully in all respects with hwowever of some other region - far away or nearby neighbour...; perhaps the state becoming a benevolent-intermedeary for business-partners or cultural congenious partners...Thank you.

Thank you Yuval for changing our perspective towards nationalism. It is about time to wrestle the meaning of nationalism out of the hands of fascists. It is about time to stress the importance that nationalism and globalism need to cooperate to create a positive future. To divide globalism and nationalism will support the agendas of those who promote fear and hate.

The Nation state is an artificial construct. Nation States were established almost entirely by violence. They force a single mold. Force people who are different, different languages, different cultures. All forced into having one common goal. To serve the Nation Rulers. Borders are shaped by war. Nationalism is not natural, because it has to be enforced. I urge you to look at the opposite perspective. Then make up your own mind.

Patrick Correa you misinterpreted my post, I’m sorry for that🌻I’m nether a nationalist not somewhat totally on the opposite side. For me it seems the Extrems of both sides are out of touch! Who gets to say what is natural and what not? The world is exactly how it is in this moment! I can’t see that something is not ‘ natural’, though that doesn’t mean I have to like it or can’t change a situation for the better! But we have also to except that we have evolved into nations and have to deal with it.

Regarding global basic income. It can be established since it demands a minimum amount of administration. But creating it via direct taxation would be impossible at the current moment partly because of nationalism and welfare chauvinism. A better solution is idea as Manna coin and private donations as via Give Directly. Otherwise, a publicly funded GBI would demand some kind of global taxation as of CO2 and financial transactions

Nationalism is simply, a reaction to Globalism, and not all Nationalism is a negative. In a multi-cultural society, those who have been disenchanted, for their own survival, need some sense of identity. And they find this through "nationalism."

I appreciate his endeavor to (re-)verify the importance of Nation and to instill in this notion a spirit relevant today against its corruption. Yet he seems to have based his arguments on rather artificial images about both nationalism and tribalism.... About 'tribal chaos', in which 'no one cares about anyone other than his or her own intimate relatives and friends"...That's not true. Chimps pass infants back and forth among female members to take care of them collectively. Human tribal life as numerous anthropologists have reported, does show a care for "other" members that are neither friends or intimate relatives. Yes tribes split. But what is left in a single unit also doesn't only comprise friends and relatives either...We have evolved enough to know, a "fight and leave" norm should not be followed, even it was tens of thousand years ago!

I'm surprised no one in the audience asked for a sensible definition of the term "nation". Harari mentioned the German history of formerly separate Prussia, Bavaria, Saxon etc. which already were at a much higher level than just tribes. They were already nations. German nationalists of the 19th century tried to establish a united Germany to make progress away from aristocracy towards democracy and parlamentarism. The new organisational body of power was meant to establish a new political order. The United States of America emerged by similar principles. Modern nations often are manifestations of political ideas. And still there almost always are smaller units of power which make up the nation, like a number of states or counties. The unit of a town, the Polis, is where the word "politics" stems from. This already is larger than a tribe. Harari somehow left out many intermediate levels and dimensions of human organization and territorial group identity. Why exactly focus on the level of the nation? And while nations, as mentioned, often are the product of political ideas, one could also take concepts like religion and science as elements of civilizatory progress. The national level actually could be totally left out, it is just a rather arbitrary backdrop. Civilization could work just as well, maybe even better, without nations at all, but just a territorial hierarchy of organization, without giving that much brand weight to the national one. How is the nation that essential? What is it that makes it special? Ironically, Harari mentioned being somehow culturally special as a nation's quality, but this is true for territorial units of any size and hierarchical degree. When praising the civilizational progress a larger body of cooperation provides, the more abstract and neutral way would be not to pick out nationalism because of the structure a nation provides, but to name socialism because of the structure a society provides. Or even communism because of the structure of communities, also transcending tribes since the dawn of civilization. Those isms went catastrophic just as nationalism in the 20th century. However, to aim for a less binary understanding of these concepts is just as important as it is with nationalism.

You liken a world government to an orchestra in which all instruments are the same. I would argue that a federal world government with many political competences devolved to nations and regions, wouldn't that be like an orchestra with a conductor? India would be an example of a federal state with vastly different cultures, or, on another level, the EU. When he explains what fascism is, replace "the nation" with "the economy" and you kinda get the system we're in now.

Yuval to be consistent with you thesis I believe you may want to recalibrate the questions to politicians and add: “ how do you intend to promote our interests while advancing cooperation with and between other nation states”.

From an early age that I understood that all political, social, and economic ideologies are not developing and not being a nihilist, I think that for now is yes a mixture of democracy and capitalism is what that fells more "natural" for us as social beings. Many things in modern democracies have root in social ideologies like nationalism and communism and even monarchy. Nevertheless the notion of nationalism as presented by Yuval Harari, make me think about many things specially the future and unfortunately or not I have the feeling that my nationality is only a piece of plastic that I have to carry in my wallet with a bad photo of my beautiful "visage"... maybe meaning that my nation is not that good in making "national marketing"? ...or that we are as social beings simply are becoming bigger than only being part of one nation with the globalization? I would like to be... I don't know Icelander and Japanese as well 🙂

Yuval made one only mistake, Trump didnt reject globalism, he rejected unfair commercial trades, that's why he reviewed and signed a new trade with Canada & México, new trade with southkorea, new commercial deal with Vietnam, a new trade about frakking oil, aluminium and Iron trade with the EU (the most protected and close market in the world). And also he was dealing a new commercial agreetment with China.

When in Rome do as the Romans do, with limits, realizing that in a globalised society Romans must also think "when in the world, do as the world does." While maintaining national civicism, we need to promote globalism more. Treat foreigners as national "strangers". Why does Harari say a global government would be dangerous? Because international law would not be violated as it is now by Israel and the USA, whose support he apparently craves, favouring capitalism and denouncing a convenient and traditionally narrow view of "communism." He remains shamelessly silent against the reality of oligarchy and income and wealth inequality. A kind of consent. Disappointing from such an intelligent person. Intellectually dishonest sellout.

There is for example "liberal nationalism" which is not evil per se but authoritarian and state-centric. So called liberal nationalists tend to be against European citizenship and democracy, against free migration and constitutional patriotism, and in favour of high-tax welfare state, prohibitions and collectivist policies often directed towards Muslims and poor individuals as beggars.

So theoretically Harari should also be against a European Union, since he's against inter- supra- national governments/governance.

Prof. Harari is interesting enough that I keep listening to him even though I find his presentations cogent only about half the time, perhaps less often than that. This is one of the gratifying occasions, not because he has convinced me, but because I've believed all this, down nearly to the last detail, for many years already. Nationalism is like personal pride: it is not intrinsically good or bad; rather, there is an ideal healthy level. Too much and you are at war, too little and you collapse inward upon yourself.

I think that was a brilliant talk . But. What I'm asking myself is, isn't what he depicts as nationalism, just humanism ,reduced to a national ingroup. ?
@yurona5155
@yurona5155 5 лет назад
The distinction between the two concepts only becomes meaningful if/when the moral concern for the nation comes into conflict with that for fellow human beings in the outgroup. Humanism means you make 'being human' the primary metric to base your moral decisions on whereas nationalism means 'belonging to a nation' is the overriding factor.
