Goldstein -Europe - Tim Flannery -The Ukrainian Night - Marci Shore -Humankind - Rutger Bregman -The Odyssey - Homer -AI Superpowers - Kai-Fu Lee -The Age of Surveillance Capitalism - Shoshana Zuboff -Congo - David Van Reybrouck -How to Change Your Mind - Michael Pollan Psd: I would love to see in the future book recommendations from Yuval. Excellent forum for two current & progressive intellects of our time. Because such discussions have lasting pertinence but also a specific historical context, please ALWAYS INCLUDE THE DATE of the original talk/broadcast somewhere in the details/notes for the program/talk. Many thoughtful points were made, but I particularly appreciated the distinction between Optimism and Hope, in that Hope generally suggests more individual activism versus the more background or collective scope of Optimism. Modern humans have the intelligence & technology to communicate/discuss, develop & create/implement social systems that will enhance human lives & develop/harness even greater human potential, but only through broader consensus building, collaboration, and collective commitment/action built around maximum participation/buy-in of the individual citizens of the world.

Mr. Hararri, we admire and appreciate your work a lot, you are without doubt one of the greatest achievers of our time but when it comes to science or vaccination you don't mention the negative aspects of it but just the posetive ones.. Today everything has turned to business and very profite oriented, untrustworthy.. One question, what do you think about the pharma lobbying and the big businesses the doctors are making with vaccination while the poor nursing staff and other less fortunate people are working so hard just to meet their basic needs? Here in Germany doctors are just making more money out of the crises like never before .. I thought being a doctor demands a lot of responsibility and ethical behavior. .Another question in terms of climate change, why don't the rich just stop flying for fun or shopping with their private jets all over the world , or reduce the lavish lifestyle they are living by? , or does it just apply to the average consumer ? 🙏

You are correct, except the part about him being a great thinker. He suggests that we have no freewill, while choosing words and language to convey a message corresponding with, what he sees as reality. How can he do that if he has no free will? Why does his message matter if I have no freewill to hear it and modulate my behavior as a result? He is a fool pretending to be a scholar. If we all have no freewill, how does he question a person's response to the manufactured virus/covid crisis. harari is an antchrist, you will see.

What is the problem? For me, the problem is our essential vulnerability and insecurity as individuals. Fear in all its forms and permutations makes us do incredibly stupid and cruel things. The fear of being alone and even more vulnerable than we would be were we with our tribe or group brings us to sublimate our sense of what is fair and just to the press of the group. The answer is simple, but never easy. We must each face our fears, every time they come up in us, and learn to bring courage into our everyday lives. In this way, we can at the very least face what needs to be faced and do what needs to be done in the moment.

You can tell right away from Rutger's line of thought the insidious ways structural privilege works: when you're lucky enough to be born in a long established, solid, social welfare democracy (The Netherlands) It can really bias your view on society. His work would hugely benefit if he were to spend a few years away from the First World or study Fanon or Mbembe with attention.

These are also the societies that brought innovation on all kinds of fronts. This means that at least we have a shot as a species to get more peaceful. Of course these societies aren’t perfect at all, but they do serve as models for the world as a starting point. Showing that humans are capable of moving in the right direction. Thank you for this debate, very interesting... The thing I'm stuck on is that, it's not about "right" or "wrong", or "good or bad"... it's more about entitlement, greediness, empathy, convenience, selflessness, shrewdness, values, principles and the ego... and pessimism and positivity vary according to one's upbringing. For example, I grew up in Venezuela where I've experienced a very corrupt government, developed countries exploit the country only for its natural resources. Taking for the country... But it's only due to my experiences of having travelled and observing different ways of doing things is that I have been able to come to my own conclusions as to what is "good/bad".

These conversations always make me think in unexpected ways! What is really good and I want to share my thoughts :) What I think the lesson to be learned with the pandemic is that if we are able to collaborate in large numbers as a species, we have to be able to develop better and faster collaboration frameworks for our human society to be able to overcome real problems more efficiently and not only to drive forward in lucrative technological advancements, it doesn't matter if for covid-19 or the climate change, because what I observe daily is that society has advanced knowledge to overcome problems but is not flexible enough in mass scale specially to implement the solutions because of inappropriate policies, obsolete structures and dystopian ideologies.... it's amazing that our smartness is being always misplaced and not for the common good is like a layer of our completeness as an human specie is missing and I think that is the fundamental issue that has to change.

The "moderator" clearly didn't want the discussion to be done in a moderate way, she repeatedly tried for a "battle of the minds", illustrating Bregman's point about the negative influence of the media which focuses on bad news, its motto is "If it bleeds it leads". This constantly reinforces the negative view of human nature which Bregman is trying to show is mistaken. Despite her, the two gave a good example of a shared interest being discussed in a nuanced, informed, moderate way.

We definitely need Global institutions as a response to relationships and businesses that have become globalized without the proper institutions to regulate human relationships. ECOCRACY is the alternative to DEMOCRACY, the only form of government capable of guiding human relations in a globalized world.

I'd like to hear from Rutger and Yuval what they say about the relevance of Nasim Taleb's 'Skin in the Game' or 'Antifragile'. Rutger says nice equilibria are possible, but Rutger and Yuval agree this is not automatic, and really bad ones exist. Taleb puts emphasis on the fact that only one catastrophy is enough for an end, which demands some antifragile strategy for humanity to avoid disaster. A long 'nice' situation may lead via complacency to a bad one. And we are living through risky times.

Tuvalu, I have been rereading your books again. As a Rotarian, I am trying to convince Rotarians to establish RIPA(Rotary International Peace Academy). There are military academies in the U.S. but none exist for the peace academy. Your thought please.

Hi Yori. I appreciate your comment. My father was a committed Rotarian and I got to attend meeting with him a few times. He was also dedicated to world peace, not as a cliche, but as an actual goal. He was President of People to People International when he died. On his deathbed he told his doctors that he would be giving a speech in Hong Kong in six weeks which would be translated into many languages. People to People was established by US President Eisenhower for intellectual and cultural exchange between countries. I’m not certain of its current state, but you may find a framework there without having to reinvent the wheel. He traveled all around the world from China to Romania to Jamaica visiting with other judges and lawyers. But I’m sure many categories of exchange were made: businessmen, bankers, artists, etc. I think you’ll find it to be of interest.

Very good points here! The questions around large scale societies are powerful, please also look up the works of Riane Eisler. The domination versus partnership scale provides a universal frame. Partnership shows practical pathways for a better future. The four cornerstones build that possible future (1 Family & Social Structure, 2 Gender Roles & Relations, 3 Economic & Social Relations, and 4 Narratives & Language)

To keep this in perspective, the internet was shutdown in Uganda this Jan for 5 days and extended for another month for a partial lockdown. The threat of Tech feels remote to me for authoritarian regimes that can simply shut it down and head back to the stone age.

In The Human condition, we are highly competitive. We can put other down(gossip), we can self-improve, or we can lift others up. As Humans, we are in all three states at once. Gossip is also Comedy. We all need a sense of Humor. We like people that self-improve. The only one we need more of is the Goddess State where we lift others up. The amount of energy we put into each state can vary each day. What will you choose today?

I totally agree about global collaboration and global politic, we need unification. I'd like to see youth and younger population to have power. I wouldn't like to be policy maker, because it implies a lot of responsibility and I guess many people think this way, it's also a really dirty game, but I'm really tired of seeing old man dictating their view when they are corrupted and completely disconnected with the majority of the world. We should be able to vote on a social media platform about ethical questions related to society and changes, I'm pretty sure we would be able to define trends and common goals. This will show the power of democracy, because everyone could express themselves in the confort of their houses.

interesting dialogue, but we have to be critical when it comes to this type of dialectic between (pessimistic & optimistic) point of view. Because it is the OBSERVER state, like audiences in a show. Rather, we are PLAYER in this human stage, who MUST be active ; looking for success and learn from failure, Despite of taking sides, and STICK to one team. Note: Sound setting needs to be taken in consideration in next videos. Thanks Yuval.

Yuval:1 Rutger:0 Quite the mismatch. Given the aggregate of the exponential increase of existential threats we collectively face as a species, I'm going with Oscar Wilde: "The basis of optimism is sheer terror." The threats are time sensitive and we are far too late. We don't need hope. We need courage. Courage to face what's coming. Twenty years to REVERSE carbon emissions so that civilization as we know it will survive in a recognizable form by 2200. With the unbridled profit incentive (capitalism) at stake? Guess who wins? Courage, my friends, courage.
