I have the previous version of Opium. Mine is a very strong amber. I only wear it in winter and not often, but I always get compliments when I wear it. It is nothing like Shalimar.

I am so impressed on your knowledge of the Opium wars. As a child growing up my father always reminds us about the terrible scourge of opium drug.....so while in a way I am trying to appreciate the perfume for what it is, this name always reminds me of the stories told me to as child. As the younger generation grow up the experience gets diluted out and less and less is being remembered, just like the newer iterations , it changes and gets 'diluted' from the original.

I so wish I could get the vintage version! I’m in love with the 2009 EDT, I can’t image how much better it would be. But it’s so expensive

All the established designer's perfume fragrance's have been ruined with the reformation process. It's got to the point that the illegal cheep copies actually smell just the same if not better than the modern day watered down ones. Hope that makes sense 😄

Agreed, I notice they (mostly) smell nice, but they used to be intoxicating.

I love the smell of this original opium too.i have it for April the week after my birthday because I am using Black opium extreme or Elle on the month itself.

Thanx for the Video!! The new Opium smells more like the first 1977 Version than the Version in between that was pruduced by gucci ppr. 1993-2009. Of course there is a much missing inside but its still strong and long lasting. And it have the "vibe" of the first Version.

These will never be the same because they don’t use the original ingredients! Illegal now. Never will we get those deep heavy notes again. Also, it’s hard to get the originals that don’t smell turned.

unfortunately the EDP is no longer being sold in my country. the EDT is still very easily available in the 50ml but the 90ml EDT is becoming hard to find here.

Dear Dacob, this look was fabulous on you! What a beautiful jacket too. I love the Opium aesthetic but the new formula definitely grates on me a little. I'm a Coco edp lady all the way. Was gifted my first bottle in 1988 by my mother for my 16th and was hooked. Inés in the adverts was my idol! As for YSL give me Rive Gauche any day, a couple of sprays and this 50 year old is 18 again xx Keep up the good work. Your enthusiasm and intelligence are inspiring.

Thanks for your review. If the vintage and original version of Opium from the 70s to 90s is still available, 1) where do you get it from? and 2) isn´t the smell totally off by now that it would smell just as off as the synthetic reformulation? I think all their Absolute special editions are so much real perfume than what they produce now. To me the best of them all is the Opium body oil. I enjoy it more than the new reformulation Opium.

I have a vintage Opium from early early 1980s. I also have an edp from late 2010s. I layer the 2010s version with Kayali Vanilla 28 and it comes much closer to the original.

l'oreal ruined opium when it takes over ysl beauty in 2008. everything prior to that was acceptable. but the best opium era was the Charles of the Ritz era when it first came out in 1977 and up until 1986.

I cannot get enough of your perfume reviews! For some reason the last ysl Opium I have tested had a strong note of coffee... (which I'm not a fan of, with the exception of Killian fragrances) perhaps it was a flanker, I'll have to revisit... You mentioned in one of your livestreams that you have a video on ambergris, how do I find it? I would love to see what you had to say there!
