Imagine... you find yourself in a spot where you were unable to ride your motorcycle to solid ground. I found myself in just such a situation, and it gave me the perfect opportunity to deploy and demonstrate a "z-drag" pulley system. It's a 3:1 mechanical advantage pulley system comprised of two mechanical prusiks, a mini pulley, three carabiners, and a length of static line and 1" webbing.
Your knowledge, skill, and physical fitness will all come into play using this system. It will only ASSIST you...it's not an electric winch. Having friends helps tremendously; as operating this system solo WILL test your fitness.
There are options for the individual components of this system, and buying a complete system that is ready to deploy right out of the box does exist. I choose to hand-pick the components based on my desire to have the ability to separate and use the components for other uses not discussed in this video; as well as size, price, and most importantly... load rating. ADV bikes are heavy and depending on terrain, can demand that your gear lift the bike at near-vertical angles.
Petzl, Kong, etc all make excellent rescue/mountaineering equipment... but based on the factors above as well as progress capture efficiency, I choose CT Climbing for the most important piece of this system. (Based on time of purchase - 2020)
Below is a list of the components I have, and how many are required:
CT Climbing - RollnLock x2
GM Climbing - Mini Pulley x1
Carabiner x3
10mm STATIC Line 50ft (DO NOT USE DYNAMIC/CLIMBING ROPE [See Below])
1" Webbing ~10ft x2
WARNING: Dynamic/Climbing rope/cord is elastic and designed to stretch when a load (climber) is falling in order to absorb the shock and protect the climber. Using dynamic rope in the system will stretch and create an unsafe load (spring) in the system. USE ONLY STATIC LINE.

Thanks for posting. I’m new to dual sport and off-tossing and want to get a pulley system. Hook ‘em horns!

Green Chili makes a good looking ready to go system. I’m looking forward to doing a video on an electric winch system in the near future.

Good video and a nice setup. I have a Z-Drag system that is 4:1 pulling from the bike side and 5:1 pulling from the anchor side. It works quite well, though I have only used it for practice so far. 🤞

I this system to a 4:1/5:1 setup, also only used it to practice, but I pulled my loaded bike up a 30-35* slope on a test run. Worked great and have plans to use it in the field to complete my ride through Brush Creek!

I used my new 4:1/5:1 system to pull my wingman’s bike up out of a riverbed n Mendocino NF last week. I’m never leaving the pavement without it!

Thanks. I recently needed this system but had sadly left it at home. I was stuck in a ravine for five hours. Since then I have upgraded this system to a 5:1 mechanical advantage, which I now consider the minimum for use with a heavy ADV bike. I hope to do an update or new video of the updated system soon.

I use a 6 to 1 purchase system off of my sailboat, that's 4 times less effort to pull on than the 2 to 1 Z-Drag you show. Mine also has the sailboat block with the cam that locks the rope so you don't have to hold the tension with your hand. Flick the rope out of the cam, and it lets free.

I have since upgraded my system to a 4:1/5:1

If the seat hight was lower, one could actually sit on the bike and pull with both arms, right?

I would say 9/10times, no. One hand will need to stay on the handlebar to keep it straight.

Have you tried anchoring the bike on the forks or bars so the system keeps the bars straight?

Just the CT rollnlock are gonna set you back almost 150 bucks, for that price you can buy a recovery system from green Chile adventures. It’s a all in 1 5:1 system specifically designed for motorcycles. Thanks for sharing tho.
@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 2 года назад
That’s very true… and they make awesome gear. I definitely recommend a 5:1 system too. The 3:1 is a bit “under-powered” for a bike this heavy.
@rocketcitymoto2883
@rocketcitymoto2883 Год назад
The way you have it set up is a 2 to 1 system. Thay's why youre having so much trouble pulling it. If you start by tying the rope to the bike and adding another pulley, you'll have a 5 to 1 and make it a helluva lot easier.
@BlueADV214

I have upgraded this to a 5:1 system… I need to do a new video for it.
@rocketcitymoto2883
@rocketcitymoto2883 Год назад
You should! I've watched this video at least 5 times. :) I am getting all my components together for a 5 to1 with a couple extra components to easily convert to a 15 to 1, although that might be overkill.

Do you think the redundancy of a shovel would have allowed you to clear a driveable track in the snow? Just askin', I wasn't there. Thanks for your effort in making the video.
@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 Год назад
Maybe, I do carry a shovel now and I have upgraded that pulley system to a 5:1/4:1 advantage system (which should replace any 3:1 z-drag system). Looking back though, I have to be honest, being a better rider and knowing how to turn off my traction control probably would have been even better… but, even these days my 5:1 has saved me and my buddy’s bike more than once.

Suggest using zip ties as “studs” on each wheel for additional traction......

I'm sorry but I wasn't too impressed, maybe you normally ride mostly street to justify those tires for one. That is also a pretty heavy kit for the amount of effort and money you spent, a decent length of 1/4" polyester sheathed Dyneema led through your forks and wrapped around your rear hub twice before tying off to a spoke makes for the most powerful winch that you are already riding. Put her in first gear and climb like a goat while you are still on the seat. Next time it would do wonders to really get stuck, waste of your time to stage a shot just to demo your new toy and then end up turning around anyways, the snow only gets deeper at the snowline. But good on you for trying to put some helpful content out there, I haven't seen any of your videos before, I'm just trying to be helpful too after a cup off strong coffee. I just ride a ktm 1090R.
@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 3 года назад
Well, it wasn’t staged and I didn’t set out on that trail just to turn around… unfortunately (humbly) I wasn’t that good of a rider back then and I just didn’t have enough time to chance getting the bike stuck again and potentially having to walk out and suffer the ordeal of trying to get a tow (tow trucks don’t leave the pavement in this area btw). I’m really glad you seem to know what you’re doing and ride the best bike ever apparently. One day I hope to be as awesome a rider as you are. Enjoy your coffee, D

Hey bud, Get some decent tires on that monster and you could probably ride it up that hill
@BlueADV214
@BlueADV214 2 года назад
I hear ya... since that day I've learned a couple of things. 1) Even the off-road traction control sucks... being able to spin the tire to get through mud/sand/snow is a must. 2) Trailmax Mission tires aren't quite the 50/50 tire they make it out to be... I like them, but switching to a knobbier Motoz Rallz very soon.

I don't under stand why at the first of the video your not on the bike with it running and pull the rope as your letting out on the clutch ? Your trying to pull the bikes complete weight . Any turning of the wheel by the engine would have make things a lot easier . If you put the rope under the back tire and then set on the bike as you let out the clutch it will pull on the rope as the tire turns . Its like you pulling on the rope but the tire turning is doing the work . You can also wrap the rope around the hub . Standing there trying to pull on the rope with the bike not even running is about stupid . On the other hand if the bike was not running for some reason and you were pulling it up a hill so you could go back down it to bump start it that's another story . Watch this video at 4:53 . You can see he wraps it around the hub on the disc side and the back wheel does the work . ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kYf2iUY4jZ8.html.

Lol, well the short answer is I didn’t see that video before that day and he has way more experience knowledge than I do. There were a couple other things I’ve learned since that day which might have actually prevented the need to pull that kit out. It was still a good test of the capability and limitations of a 3:1 system and I now use a 4:1/5:1 system… which I haven’t demonstrated yet. I plan on doing that later this summer.
