People get hung up on brake dust from back in the day when we had asbestos linings. You probably inhale more brake dust riding than you would changing pads a few times a year.

So, back in April, I bought "budget" brake pads for my 02 FZ1 from ebay. They were DBX & GOLDfren for $41.99 total- 2 front and 1 rear. Last week I changed my tires and did some PM's on the wheel bearing and brake calipers. Well, during the pad inspection I noticed the friction material was separating from the backplates. Long story short- the backplates have two holes drilled which the friction material is pushed through during the manufacturing process, this is all that's keeping the pads "bonded" with it's backplate. I barely touched the pads and they fell off the plates! MORAL = Don't cheap out on brake pads! For $20 extra I bought EBC organic pads for all 3 calipers. $20 can mean life or death when it comes to motorcycles! Shit on my chest!

Kawasaki may advice that the pads can be replaced without removing the calipers and you proved it could be done, that said it looked fiddley. For the sake of two bolts I whip the calipers off and use a screwdriver on the old pads to open the pistons up which makes life a lot easier. I can't think of any downsides to doing it this way or am I missing something? Lastly, for the amount of work you do on bikes, a bike bench will make your life a lot easier and may possibly help with your filming, not that is in anyway a critisism of you current content.

Have a pair of fucked brake pads off a mates bike*, they are thicker in the middle than the are at top and bottom. If you put them together you can rock them top to bottom by a fair bit ! *It was like that when he bought it; new pads, disks and brake lines fitted front and back. I know because I was with him when he bought it and we changed the few bits and pieces in my garage.

I agree with the buying new perk, I know every slight screw up I made on my Inazuma haha (broke a little plastic piece on a fairing, accidentally pierced a hole in the reservoir tubing using a pick to get it off I just cut it shorter and reattached). This is why I think I'm just gonna either buy new or bikes with ~5k miles on so they're almost bone stock. My FZ1 had 3k on the clock when I bought it and it had one odd bolt holding the headlight cowl probably done by whoever wired the heated grips I was pretty confused at first but replaced it with the OEM part.

Matt, do you not clean the discs when changing pads especially when the friction material is different?
@dirtygarageguy
@dirtygarageguy 4 года назад
LOL no - applying the brakes does that - what are you gonna clean them with? An angle grinder?
@raydavison2972
@raydavison2972 4 года назад
@@dirtygarageguy I meant clean them of the old bonded on pad material, you can see the discs are partially (Not badly I accept) glazed. You then have a clean disc for the new pad material to grip. Some medium grit emery paper and brake cleaner do the trick. Or if you want to get fancy, these tools are designed for the job: www.brushresearch.com/brushes.php?c1=6
@dirtygarageguy
@dirtygarageguy 4 года назад
But why? Looked at the BRM page - it just cleans the disc. The rotor wears like the pads just usually not at the same rate. Anyhting on them will be gone in a week.
@raydavison2972
@raydavison2972 4 года назад
@@dirtygarageguy Agreed, all it does is clean the disc which is the whole reason behind my original question. The old bonded in pad material (And other road contaminants) does not always just get get wiped off and the non-uniform surface affects braking performance more and more as time goes on. It is particularly important with a pad material change. - Does it make them dangerous? Not usually, certainly not when they are as little affected as yours currently are but a badly affected disc is similar to a glazed pad which most will accept can be very dangerous. - Does it affect braking performance? Most definitely and it depends upon how bad they are how much they will be affected. - Will it bother most people? Probably not because they don't realise what they have lost and most rarely use maximum braking. It's much the same as properly set up suspension, most people with fully adjustable suspension never touch it and will never know the joy of how well their bike could handle.
@RayWolfwinski
@RayWolfwinski 4 года назад
Can someone please explain to me why rotors are almost never changed on bikes when the pads are worn out. I come from the automotive side and rotors have limits to thickness and rotors do get thinner as they are used. But why in bike work no matter what they don't do new rotors but do new pads and slap it together. Maybe I'm new to bikes and just can't get my 4 wheel brain around it. P. S. I have a 2019 Z900 ABS and a motorcycle safety instructor.
@dirtygarageguy
@dirtygarageguy 4 года назад
"Can someone please explain to me why rotors are almost never changed on bikes when the pads are worn out. " 1) the pads are the sacrificial ablation material. 2) The discs are still within spec 3) have you seen the price of discs? - car rotors are usually quite cheap because of the number produced and they're usually cast - which is a cheap process
