This trick has been a revelation on my own rebuild. Mine were seized pretty tight. Pliers were threatening to chew up the outside of the piston, and one of those hand-held piston removal tools just didn't have the grip required. It was hard-work, but the socket trick was the only way I got them out! Brililant.

Hi Del, you probably don't remember but about 3 years ago I messaged you saying how I enjoyed your video's and it helped me through my cancer treatment even gave me the mojo to get my RGV sorted, you and penny kindly sent me a cap and some stickers, well the treatment seems to have worked and I'm still here watching every video!! just wanted to say I'd decided to have my 6 pots on my bandit 12 rebuilt, and the next day this video pops up, so I gave it ago myself and have saved myself about £150 😊😊👍 cheers

Dell - I know this video is 5 years old but I have to comment on how much this video has helped me. I'm not a mechanic but very mechanically inclined. I've restored a number of motorcycles and with every one, I learned a bit more and take on progressively difficult jobs. My 1984 Virago caliper rebuild cost me nearly $300 CAD through nothing more than my ignorance and lack of knowledge having a shop do the work (and that was just the front brakes). I came across this video before I tackled my latest restoration, a 1987 FZR1000 Genesis that I plan to take back to factory new. The air compressor and socket tips were absolutely essential since all the pistons were stuck with this one too. I was able to do all the work myself with seal kits being well under $60. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Del, I know the vid is a couple of years old but I'm sure I've seen one of your vids where you explain how caliper seals work and you say in that vid to insert the seals and pistons only to use brake fluid as lube, but on this vid you are using red rubber grease? I'm confused now.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
Hi buddy, the red stff I used was a simple red rubber lube and in my case it was supplied with the seals... you can buy it in tubes or tubs, it's a mixture of castor oil and liquid clay, so it's safe on all rubber and won't contaminate your brake fluid... but if you don't have any, then brake fluid is a good solution.

The Suzuki brake setup is crap. I have had several Suzukis with the same setup. Better to replace the six pots with a set of Nissans. Or the master cyl with one from P.F.M , Brembo, I.S.R with a 19mm bore, instead of the Suzuki one which is 17mm if I remember right. Or better still swap the lot. I used P.F.M discs AP calipers and an I.S.R master cyl.

Question, (maybe I'm not looking hard enough online): I dis-assembled the Tokico front calipers and took out the pistons. The pistons came out relatively easy. Can I polish the pistons and re-use them? (I just noticed they're expensive for me to get a different set). I haven't taken the pistons out of the rear brake, those are not coming out as easy ( I haven't tried my compressor yet). How about the rear pistons? Can I also polish them and re-use them. // Quadruple zero steel wool? I also have sanding paper all the way up to 3000 grit. // What should I look out for in a piston if I can't re-use it. Thanks a lot. (By the way, an expression I use now, from watching your Street Fighter build: "It looks Beef"). Thanks again

First thing first: Why have stopped posting those quotes on the whiteboard. Apart from very satisfying technical content that extra short reminder of wiseness was always a perfect finish . I was unable to decide where to post this question (Busa Caliper Rebuild or older ones) as i have something in between. So i've double posted it. GSXR 1000 K1. Changed the Rotors but not the pads as there was enough meat on them. But now they are moving inside and with rotation at lower speed you can hear that rattling noise. Even while rotating forward and backward you can see the pads hitting those spaces at either end. Rotor on the left side where this sound is coming from has clean rotatable and free bobbins. On the right side tried a lot of cleaning with brake cleaner but 7 of them are not rotatable by hand. :( Also tried brake grease on the back of pads and piston faces that did not help either so washed and cleaned them again it. Pistons are all cleaned up (and wd40 lithium sprayed). Moving aahhh... freely (last one comes a bit late but same behavior on both side) Haven't missed any assembly parts as well. Wondering if you could guide me in the right direction. Thanks.

yeah if it were me, id replace the bolts and pin that were wire weheeled.. id be afraid that there was metal taken off with the grease, reducing their size and holding ability. the organization used in the tear down and reassembly was spot on though. great video

Metal isn't taken off by wire wheel cleaning, just unwanted grime and corrosion, it also allows you to inspect the threads to see if the corrosion has eaten it's way in too far, and make the choice to replace if it has ! It would be an interesting experiement to take a dirty bolt and wire wheel it, then closely compare the major and minor diameters againt a new bolt.!! as long as it wasn't badly corroded it should be the same.±

Are these calipers particularly prone to seizing? Just bought a 2000 model that's been standing for 11 years in a dry garage but one caliper is really hanging up. Great trick with the rotating piston!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 года назад
Yes Simon, they do have a pretty bad rep for jamming up.. but if they're maintained then should work as well as any other caliper.

Beautifully done Del! I love the piston ratchet remover! I don't want to be a safety Nazi however, a little hand cleaner will go a long way. When those rubber gloves meet up with the turning dowel rod in the lathe. It snatches up the fingertips quickly, instantly removing any associated fingernails along with a terrible pinch bruise on the tips of what is left of the fingers. Ask me how i know this! Keep plastic / rubber gloves AWAY from the lathe. Please!

A cordless drill works perfectly for turning the pins if you do not have a lathe

Thanks, but why 2 pistons are smaller than others? I removed my 6 pistons with a pliers but I damaged them outside.. I need to replace them by new?

Contact Wemoto.com they sell TRK piston kits, they come with new stainless pistons, new seals and all the other rubber parts required to refurbish, it will be a great upgrade for you.

Kids in the background? Does the grease you are using on the piston o-rings and pistons not effect the brake fluid?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
School holidays mate, neighbours kids!... And the rubber grease is inert and does not harm to brake fluid, not that any more than the merest hint of it stays on the piston wall once you slide them in, as the seals, obviously, squeeze all the rubber grease out...

what did you used during the cilinders assembly? it was grease? is it not a problem mixing with brake fluid? thank you

Not grease, it's a silicone based red rubber lube, designed for this application.

Great video, made me confident enough to tackle my own caliper rebuild. Anyone ever suffered with weeping around the bleed nipple thread after a rebuild?
@mikedobkin7548
@mikedobkin7548 Год назад
I find that a couple of turns of PTFE tape around the threads prevents any leakage - essential to make bleeding a breeze

Dude ur awesome. What kind of grease did you use on the pistons and seals? And was that just carb cleaner to remove the grime?
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 Год назад
Brake cleaner yes.. pretty much the same stuff as carb cleaner.. and i used Silicone based Red Rubber Grease ! Thanks for your kind words.
@randomrides
@randomrides 4 года назад
Del does the red rubber grease you use not contaminate the brake fluid? Also noticed you used it with the fuel tap assembly? Thanks
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 года назад
The red bubber lube (or Silicone grease) does no harm to the brake fluid, only use it sparingly, and the tiny amount that comes into contact with brake fluid has no detrimental effect on the brakes operation what so ever.. in fact, lubricating the seals will help them glide more smoothly against the metal bore of the cylinder..

I'm rebuilding my calipers in a few days on my 2006 Suzuki GSXR 750 and have a couple questions if you don't mind? First, what was that stuff you were rubbing on the outside of the pistons and the inside of where they go? Was it brake lube? I was under the impression that the only thing you lube it with is brake fluid. Am I wrong? Also, on Tokico calipers, is there a direction (up or down) for the seals to go in, or does it not matter which way you put them in? Thank you in advance. I'm thoroughly enjoying watching your vids.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 4 года назад
Hi there, good to hear from you... these seals on your Tokico's are square, so will go in either way up, it's the slot in the caliper that's angled... the red lube is red rubber grease that came supplied with the seal kit, you can also lube with clean, fresh fluid just as easily, both work well... good luck with your projects, hope they go well!

@Moonfleet41

All I can suggest mate when a system gets jammed up and stiff, is re-build everything cos no single unit seizes up in isolation, they will most likely all be as bad as each other, so re-build the master cylinders and calipers, then replace any lines that look past their sell by date, plumb it up and it'll be good as new!
