Zack Fair and Cloud Strife are a couple of bloody bros, opposite as balls but in a way it defined Final Fantasy 7. In 1997 FF7 original made a hero who resembled nothing that came before. Cloud, especially in the Remake can be petty, moody and a pretty crap person tbh. He fails too many times to mention in the Final Fantasy 7 story and yet he is regarded as the series most famous hero. How? The answer is Zack Fair and as much as this video seems like a Cloud Vs Zack discussion, it's actually a case as to why they are honouring to the transition from the old era RPG hero to the more nuanced characters we have today.
Big spoilers all throughout including Final Fantasy 7 remake ending, Crisis Core, Advent Children, parts of the FF7 story that will appear in remake part 2 and beyond.

This goes unsaid, but I actually feel like Zack and Cloud have less of a “friends” dynamic.. and more of a “big brother, little brother” dynamic.

Zack was intentionally written to be perfect and poised to be the hero of FF7. He is the man Cloud is chasing to be after all. But turns out Zack, the traditional hero, has failed and the responsibility fell onto Cloud. So the hero Zack always wanted to be, was what Cloud became. So in a way, they are both chasing each other.

Zack's line of "if it were me, I still wouldn't give up" perfectly captures who he was. The guy literally faced an army with nothing but a sword and his smile knowing full well he was gonna die there. I wouldn't consider Zack the stereotypical hero type who never falters since we do see plenty of moments of his doubting himself and in moments of weakness and sadness. The difference is how he deals with it all. He never let's it pin him down and fall into depression. He moves forward, not unscathed but mentally strong enough to carry the weight of the negatives in his life but not let it define him.

Zack is the stereotypical male hero the same way Aerith is the stereotypical female heroine.

Zack is an idealistic Hero because that's what he WANTED to be, he tried so hard to be a hero, he always tried to do the right thing and there are moments in Crisis Core when he doesn't know what to do. Cloud in the other hand didn't care to be a hero, he just wanted to be strong and be popular and get Tifa's attention.

Exactly because of his many "flaws", which makes Cloud just a normal every day character, is he so awesome.

I think you have misunderstood the whole arc if you say that Cloud gave the Black Materia away willingly mate... He was manipulated by Sephiroth and Jenova... kinda a huge plot point in the whole FF7 story.

Cloud and Zack are two sides of the same coin; so are Tifa and Aerith. Zack and Aerith are idealistic tragic heroes, Cloud and Tifa are relatable, flawed, and broken heroes.

Still calling Cloud "emo" or "angsty" is so dam idiotic. Cloud actually has problems. He's a multidimensional character who actually goes through real trauma and development. Not everyone is going to react to these things in the same way and to think that they should is borderline idiotic.

Cloud is not emo. He’s a jerk with a heart underneath, there is a difference. Yes he was a bit of a loner when he was younger, but that does not make him an angst lord emo. There is alsonthenfact he does not really know who he isnfor 75% of ff7 og. Advent children made him just one big bundle of angst (i get it he had survivors guilt ect ect, but that was not every day normal cloud) Squall from ff8 is the angst driven “leave me alone” ff protagonist.

Zack is written to be a fairly typical hero, almost stereotypical in a lot of ways. He succeeds at everything he does; he’s charming, funny, makes friends easily; he’s outgoing and personable. We never see Zack struggle in the same way as Cloud because he wasn’t written to struggle like Cloud (even their names were meant to reflect this, Zack “Fair”’and Cloud “Strife”). And yet, despite everything Zack has going for him, he fails at probably the most crucial moment of the series: he tries to fight Sephiroth in Nibelheim and loses.

That's what made Cloud interesting was his weakness

I love them both. I relate to Cloud in so many ways. His difficulty in showing any kind of emotion or affection, him thinking everything bad that happens is his fault. That's why I feel so close to these characters.

How many times does Cloud have to kick Sephiroths ass to prove his manhood?

So Zack is meant to be the generic MC, while Cloud is meant to break the norm and be a different kind of MC, but at the end of the day, they are both awesome and amazing MC of the FF7 universe.

I've never been an energetic optimist. Zack is a better person, and i wish i could be like that, but Cloud is more relatable. I'm not into natural superheros, I like stories about people that start off not good enough and become something better.

I think that what makes Cloud a true hero is his growth during the entire game of FFVII (original game). I mean, to understand his personality you have to go step by step through what he had to endure in life.

I love protagonists that are extremely flawed and are morally gray in a lot of ways. One of the reasons I love characters like Guts from Berserk, Kei from Gantz and recently Eren from the later arcs of Attack on Titan.

Cloud is a mirror that sometimes reflects sephiroth and sometimes reflects Zack. Only later in the story does the mirror shatter and cloud have to regain his own corporeality. In kingdom hearts cloud speaks about sephiroth being his embodied darkness. If that's the case then Zack is his embodied light.
