Interesting reading the drumming 'experts' on this thread. Zak is an absolute powerhouse of a drummer. You don't get a job in The Who if you are, as many on here put it, basic, competent and doesn't have the 'touch'. REALLY? He is a class act. Many top drummers tried to fill this seat, Zak makes it his own.
I didn’t even know who Zack was until I saw a video of this same song in Hyde Park. He’s a perfect drummer for them and I do wish The Who would’ve started out with a drummer like Starkey instead of the disaster that Keith Moon was!
Such a great Moon replacement. The only drummer on earth who could make sense of Moon's playing and recreate it so that it has the same vibe and sound. Extremely impressed every time I hear it.
Agreed. I like Kenney Jones, but I thought he was all wrong as the replacement drummer for The Who. You could really tell the difference on the studio albums It's Hard and Face Dances.
but but but Zak plays the drums with power so cleanly and Moon played like Moon ! I really like both but you must agree they play the kit differently . I tried hard to play the drums like Keith 50 years ago BUT I couldn't then and and today !
Zac plays the drums because of Keith Moon and not because his dad is Ringo. Zak's godfather is Keith Moon and he gave Zac his first drum kit. Ringo didn't want his kids to burdened with his legacy and didn't want his kids to play the drums, but Keith ignited the spark that we see in Zac today.
@@jimjamescassidy9873 I'm sure he had a lot of mentoring. But he is the perfect replacement for Keith Moon. Seems to have a feel for Moon's style and timing. It also looks like he's playing a similar kit as Moon's. Kenny Jones is a great drummer and filled in well after Keith Moon's passing. But I like Zac better.
I just saw the Who in 2022 in the (05/15/22)Cincinnati show and thought Zak was killing it- I'm not a drummer so maybe I am wrong but to me he was fantastic!
Zak's a truly amazing drummer, easily as good as Moon and technically better.. and one of the very best in the world right now. The only thing Moon has on him is that these are his beats that Zak's emulating. Not sure how Zak is with is own original work as I've never heard it, but even so I'm sure his dad is very proud of him. I've played the drums for 40 years, and I've never seen anyone play better than Zak.
Jonny Rocket A question from a non musician. Are rock drummers (in general) prone to arthritis? Read about the late Neil Peary struggling with this. Thanks.
He doesn't pinch the stick between his thumb and index finger, but holds it with the middle, ring and pinkey fingers, leaving the index finger relaxed, which allows free movement of stick without tension.@@jabold
Second favorite drummer ever first is Keith moon good camera work saw the who in Raleigh and had seats on the side like that and watched zak the whole concert
Happy Birthday Zak Starkey born on September 13, 1965. He is an English rock drummer who has performed and recorded with English rock band the Who since 1996. He is also the third drummer to have appeared with English rock band Oasis. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zak_Starkey
Zack swings the sticks just like Keith. Now if only Zack could swing his body and head in the seat like Keith did behind the drum kit. WOW. FLASHBACK to the Who's beginning years.
12:55 .. I've been listening to this song for 40 great years, and this version of the drum solo never even occurred to me. in some ways, i think zak is better for the band than keith. i know that's sacrilegious, and I owe keith moon sooo much as a player -- but my Lord zak starkey has staked his own claim in this line-up. truly gangster.
Only In rock n roll can't the Beatles drummer's son be the godson of the who's drummer...the fill his shoes and carry that weight.....crazy....but he is great.
No one has compared ZAK to John Bonham and Phil Collins.. Where I see his technique as a combination of both these two. I agree with everyone though, Zak is truly a Great Drummer!
Great job, Zak. Keith would be very proud and pleased his Godson carries on his seat. But sadly the bass line just isn't as good as The Ox ( Thunderfingers). Who is playing bass here?
OK as a 47 years gigging experience as a guitar player , I can clearly see how good Zak is, just the sheer power is awesome, let alone all the fills etc, but from a drummers point of view.. just how good is he? is he better than Bonham or Keith moon? from a non drummers point of view, id say he is way ahead, but is that correct? I'd really appreciate answers from experienced drummers please
I guess you can’t play moon’s parts without the facial expressions, The drumming follows the melody and so all over the place and exhausting. but it worked amazingly with the music. Zak doing great job nailing the vibe and feel.
I wonder if The Who had an actual drummer, instead of the disaster that Keith Moon was, if they would’ve been more popular. These guys are old and they STILL kick ass!! I know this was a few years ago but they still sound just as good.
Watch Moon's drumming performance at the Tanglewood music shed on July 7, 1970 (it's usually available on RU-vid). I was there. Moon was at the height of his creative powers. There is absolutely no comparison between Moon's dazzling drumming and the basic competent drumming that Zak is providing. Zak's not in the same drumming universe as Moon.
Zac is not trying to replicate Keith Moon nobody can he was one on his own ,he has his own style of drumming as do other drummers ,he is a fully respected competent drummer and fits in with the Who just fine .they wouldn’t have him drum for them otherwise .he far out classes his father Ringo who was basic and good enough for the type of music of his time ,but music changed and groups demanded more aggressive drummers later on .Zac is a great drummer and gets the job done like a professional he is .
Moon was goofy and I don’t know how he held shit together that deserves a medal in itself so moon was amazing but this dude is better than moon by far please
