CORRECTION NOTE: I release when Zant was talking about the "Royal Family" he was likely meaning the Twili Royal Family. Regardless there is still a good chance he murdered the Hylian Royal Family as part of the Invasion under the command of Ganondorf. Sorry for any confusion there :)

Considering Zant was speaking directly to Midna in that cut scene where he's bemoaning the do-nothing royal family allowing the Twili to stagnate, I'm _pretty_ _sure_ he was talking about the Twili Royal Family, not the Hyrulian.
@L337M4573RK
@L337M4573RK 3 года назад
Of course Zant was referring to the Twili Royal Family as the "do-nothing" royal family! Midna was and is the Princess of Twilight, and Zant usurped both her and the rest of the Twili Royal Family prior to his assault on Hyrule (it's depicted in the cut-scene where we see how Midna became an imp, and it's alluded to when Midna tells Zant why none of the other Twili sided with his dark and mad ambitions before (i.e. "it was your eyes, Zant"))! Also, it's possible that the Hyrule Royal Family may have perished shortly before Zant's attack on the entire land of Hyrule, due to the existence of the Hyrule Castle Graveyard! (Didn't you notice how some of those graves still looked fairly new? The sheer number lingering spirits that Wolf Link sees when using his "senses" in the Hyrule Castle Graveyard (let alone the upper parts of Hyrule Castle) should have been a DEAD giveaway!) Finally, Zelda could NOT use her Goddess Powers to stop Zant and his forces initially because all 4 Light Spirits had already had their Light Orbs stolen from them and broken into Tears of Light at that point! The best she could do with her Goddess Powers at that point was to protect herself in some way, or to possibly create triangular-shaped areas of Triforce "force" around the throne room (as we see during Phase I of the Boss Fight with Ganondorf). Zelda CHOSE to surrender in order to PROTECT her remaining guards and the rest of the Kingdom from further senseless violence/bloodshed!

@@L337M4573RK "Finally, Zelda could NOT use her Goddess Powers to stop Zant and his forces initially because all 4 Light Spirits had already had their Light Orbs stolen from them and broken into Tears of Light at that point!" Did they? Rewatch the scene. The assault on the Castle happened first, and THEN spirit-transforming Twilight is spread throughout the Kingdom - the people were watching huge billowing smoke rising from the Castle as they were transformed. Strongly implying that the Light Spirits hadn't actually been attacked until _after_ Zelda's capture.

I've always thought that too. The fact that Zelda doesn't talk much about the Royal Family in general means that she may as well be the last remaining heir to the throne of Hyrule, a very common theme in the Zelda series.

Yeah, it explains her subdued demeanor in the game too. Her parents recently dead, being thrust into that role alone and then having Twilight stuff happen while she's inexperienced. Bearing the weight of her people's lives and surrendering to protect them. People say she's cold in this game, but it strikes me as being more akin to sadness.

I honestly have a different opinion on how the twili invasion played out. While in game we can travel between Ordon village and Castle Town, and even back again in less than an in-game day's worth of time, I don't think that's an accurate representation of the travel time between those locations in universe, and is just a game mechanic time system. Ordon is so far south of Castle Town that I believe that the time it takes for information to travel from one location to the next would be closer to several days, possibly longer if taking one of the longer routes (which likely would have been the case considering the shortest route is blocked off until you complete a side quest to clear it). I also don't feel like communication between Ordon village and Castle Town would have been super frequent. Ordon Village is a middle of nowhere farming town, and Castle Town is the seat of power for the Hyrulian royal family. I always got the feeling that the request for a sword the royal family made to Ordon Village was made made urgently, either as a result of some kind of siege prior to the infiltration of the castle, or Zelda receiving a prophetic vision of an oncoming attack (creating a champion mentions that women of the royal bloodline are known to receive premonitions), but since the people of Ordon Village were too slow in making and delivering the sword, it ultimately ended up being useless, hence why no one mentions or raises a fuss about the fact that Link just keeps the sword that was meant for the royal family, even after he gets the master sword. Also, think about this for a moment; the people in castle town seem AWFULLY calm for people that should know their royal family was recently overthrown from power. None of the NPC in castle town even MENTION the shadow beasts that invaded the castle, even when the area is still in twilight and you listen in on their conversations as spirits. It seems to me that the people of castle town have no idea as to what's going on in the castle. And for that matter, if Zant had truly seized all the lands of Hyrule and was assaulting the entire kingdom all at once, wouldn't Ordon Village have been covered in twilight at the same time as Castle Town? It seems to me that he seized the seat of power first, and then expanded outwards (not like a messenger could escape the twilight to warn the other provinces what was coming once he won anyway). The reason Zelda didn't use her triforce powers to fight back was because her triforce powers simply aren't very combat oriented. She holds the triforce of wisdom after all. Ganon has immense power because that's what the triforce of power grants him (I believe the attacks he uses while puppeting Zelda aren't anything he couldn't do on his own, he's just using Zelda because he knows Link won't go all out against an ally), and Link, as the bearer of the triforce of courage, never seems to have any magic abilities without said abilities being gifted to him in the form of medallions or favors from great fairies or whatnot. Zelda's triforce of wisdom gives her just that, wisdom, in the form of the premonitions that the women of the royal family are known to receive. As for explaining the King and Queen's absence, I believe a theory I've heard elsewhere (I can't remember where precisely, but it was some other Zelda-tuber here on youtube), that Zelda's parents actually passed away shortly before any events depicted in the game, and she was actually soon going to be coronated as Queen Zelda, but then the invasion happened and all that went out the window until Link could fix everything. So here's the timeline in my mind: Prior to the events of the game, Zelda's parents pass away, and Zelda's is going to be coronated as Queen in the near future. However, Zelda receives a premonition of an incoming attack on the castle, and chooses to postpone her coronation, and sends a request for a sword to Ordon Village (a sword which doesn't arrive in time to help with the invasion, so she ends up using a sword that's likely older, although hypothetically the requested sword could have just been meant as a ceremonial sword for the coronation). The very sudden attack on the castle isn't known to the people of castle town, let alone the rest of the kingdom. And before anyone cites the scene of the people of castle town looking on at the burning castle after Zelda surrenders, they could have assumed that to be some terrible accident in the castle (honestly I'm inclined to doubt that fire actually happened at all and wasn't just symbolic or something given the condition the castle is in when you go through it as a dungeon. Yeah it's got some damage in the floors and stairs on the upper levels, but I don't see any, let alone many, singe marks to indicate a recent fire). Because Zelda knew the attack was coming, she was able to have her forces set up to defend the castle, but since she didn't know where the enemies were coming from, couldn't exactly set up an offensive maneuver. Her attempts to defend the castle fail, and Zant can see clear as day just how out matched Zelda's and the people of hyrule are against his forces, hence why he feels he has enough leverage on his side to make the life or death ultimatum despite not having seized the rest of hyrule. It's not "I have all you lands and people, and if you don't surrender, they'll all die." It's "You fell THIS easily with the best warrior you had readied in advance, do you really think the rest of your kingdom will stand a chance once I finish you and move on to them?". And that's when Zelda realizes just how out matched she is, so she surrenders. Once she surrenders, Zant puts the lanayru province into twilight, and starts expanding the twilight from there. I believe that during the opening cutscene where Russel is asking Link to go to castle town in his stead, lanayru province is already in twilight, and by the time Link has just rescued Talo and the monkey from Farron woods, and Russel says that the woods have felt strange lately, the twilight is in the eldin province, and is about to expand into farron. Probably overnight, the twilight then expands to farron, and we all know what happens from there because we play through it. This is just my interpretation, but it always seemed like a fairly solid explanation to me.

@@HyruleGamer Actually, I was JUST replaying my HD version of the game, and based off some of the NPC lines, Ordon might not even be a part of hyrule kingdom. It's possible it's mistranslated, but in the beginning cutscene of the game, Russel talks about Hyrule like it's not where they live, and if you talk to Fado (the guy from the goat hearding ranch) before leaving the ranch on the day Link's meant to deliver the sword, he'll also hint at ordon village not being part of hyrule kingdom, saying he's kinda jealous you get the go to hyrule when he's never really set foot outside their little ordon village (would have quoted the line exactly but I didn't know you could only get that line from him once before his dialogue changes). If you talk to him AGAIN before leaving, he'll say "...Since you're goin' all the way to Hyrule, y'all better enjoy as much of the trip as you can!" Again implying that ordon village isn't considered part of hyrule kingdom proper. Again, could be a mistranslation, and maybe he meant to say "castle town" or "hyrule castle" or something similar there instead of just "hyrule", but if it is a mistranslation, it's strange that it happened multiple times, and if it's not a mistranslation, that's kinda fascinating that the hero of twilight isn't technically a citizen of the hyrulian kingdom (there are other lines that imply ordon village isn't in hyrule if you go out of your way to talk to ordon village npcs when you don't have to before going to the spring to get Epona back from Ilia, but this comment is long enough without me citing every line that supports this).

I think Zant was actually referring to the Twili Royal Family, not that of Hyrule. He does say that the royal family in question resigned itself to the half-existence (referring to life in the Twilight). He would still harbor hate for the Hyrulean royal family for their being light-dwellers, and Ganondorf would still be able to inform him that Zelda was the real threat.

I saw that as well with my comment. It is also interesting to note how Zant believed that he was to be King after Midna's father. Knowing that Zant and Midna are not siblings, the only way he could have been King was if he was a servant in a high position of power (like an advisor or such) and that the Twili Royal Family had no male heir in line for the throne, forcing Midna's father to name Zant as his successor (assuming their hierarchy is based around Primogeniture). In most cases however, an advisor becoming king would normally involve a coup d'etat; something that we saw Zant do in game. Perhaps this could be the basis of another theory video that explores why Zant believed that he was to be King after Midna's father.

Yeah I always thought that he was referring to the Twili Royal Family. I thought that Midna was the daughter of the previous ruler and Zant was in some sort of position of power and there was an election for the position of ruler of the twilight realm. Something similar to the Holy Roman Empire.

I wish you could fight the Special Shadow Beasts that get shown next to Zant during a few cutscenes. They look super cool. Edit: I know I'll lose the heart, but I wanted to mention some of my thoughts on this. First off, I think the Invasion of Hyrule Castle happened the same day as Talo's rescue. Remember, Zelda had met Midna before she came with Wolf Link. It seems a bit unrealistic that Midna met Zelda AND found Wolf Link in the same day. I think that Hyrule Castle had fallen as Talo was rescued or shortly after, and after Zant had control of Hyrule Castle, he sent Shadow Beasts out to defeat the Light Spirits so he could have complete control of the land and had gotten to Ordon the day after Hyrule fell. Secondly, when Zant talks about the Royal Family when you encounter him in the Twilight Realm, he is talking about the Twili Royal Family. He says "the useless, do nothing royal family that had resigned *itself* to this miserable half existence". This says that he was complaining about how (presumably Midna) decided to be content with living in the Twilight Realm instead of trying to get back to the Light Realm. I agree with the idea that the rest of the Royal Family was killed in the initial invasion. Since kings are sometimes known to lead in battle in ancient times, it would make sense. I hope if they decide to port it to Switch, they add some extra content to clear some of this stuff up.

Like i said in another comment. Idt these knights are royal guard. But perhaps just castletown soldiers brought in to fill a void from the royal guards absence. The knights didnt show much fear implying they had been trained. But their attacks were sloppy showing lack of experience in real battle. It doesnt matter how much you get trained if you havent actually fought before. (Or have only fought people with the same tactics and strategies. While the Twilight beasts were faster and more agile.)

I think Ashei mentions that the Hyrule soldiers have fallen from glory a bit, since the last several decades have been peaceful, and the army is full of cowards now. Or something like that. *Warning: LONG.* I've always had an issue with this Zelda series cutscene. We're informed early-on about Hyrule Castle and Castle Town as though the last Ganondorf is in captivity; the Kingdom is at peace (sorry, couldn't help the Super Metroid pun). But what, a day or two later the entirety of Hyrule Kingdom is dominated and shrouded in Twilight? The fact that the only token defense is within the main chamber of Hyrule Castle isn't much of a surprise and actually makes sense - the invasion was quick and strategic. But... _HOW!?_ The Twili were locked away in their own reality for untold years (at least long enough to create their own royal family and system of governance that appears at least superficially similar to that of Hyrule). Sure, Zant was using Ganondorf's power to make the attack, but if it was that simple then why didn't Ganondorf himself come back? He wasn't some disembodied spirit like Voldemort from Harry Potter awaiting resurrection, he was banished in whole with what to him was a mere flesh wound thanks to the Triforce of Power activating within him just prior to his banishment. He had the Triforce of Power backing him within the Realm of Twilight...what did he even need the Twili for if he was able to rip an opening in space/time back to Hyrule anyway? It's not like the Twili had their own means to return to Hyrule at any given moment. Hell, how did Zant or Ganondorf even know about the "Spirits of Light" that Zant had his forces assault to steal the light from Hyrule - Ganon had the Triforce of Power not Wisdom, and it's implied (loosely) by Zant himself during his little rant that he was born in Twilight and not a banished native of Hyrule. Or at least he didn't rant as well about the banishment, which seems like it would be a big thing to rant about if he had been one of the original Shadow Tribe. *HOWEVER* It's _heavily_ implied via the order of the in-game cinemas that the assault on the Castle happened FIRST which had taken both people and town guards by shock & awe, and THEN the Kingdom fell to Twilight and everyone made into spirits. Which makes not only the "last line of defense" thing a total WTF moment (especially as the solders in the Main Hall/Throne Room are just that - Soldiers, not the Royal Guard) as how were they even able to scramble that much of a defense (unless those soldiers just happened to be in the room at the time), but the entirety of just how Zant was able to invade in the first place a huge question mark - as it implies that the power of the Light Spirits were stolen *AFTER* he had succeeded in taking the Castle and Princess Zelda. But the bigger question I have is _why_ Zelda surrendered. Sure, she saw that her token defense had fallen. And sure, she was given the order to surrender or die. But this is an enemy she'd never heard of before - why would she believe he'd keep his word? She wouldn't - especially after that little innuendo that he'd just murdered the rest of the Royal Family by stating it was for her to decide _(and really, what's up with the Queen never being around and the King dying in Zelda games)._ How would she know that those trapped in the Twilight would be safely made into spirits - or would be trapped in twilight at all and not just simply slaughtered? She couldn't, not only were they not visible to humans but *the people of Hyrule had yet to be converted into spirits yet.* She possesses the Triforce of Wisdom, not the Triforce of "Sight-Beyond-Sight" (and her sword lacks the Eye of Thundera). Was she just going on the hope that this was "just one of those situations where the Hero of Hyrule will pop-up out of no-where to save the day if he hadn't already been killed"? That's a huge thing to gamble the lives of everyone in her Kingdom on. The wise thing to do would be to assume that the lives of her soldiers were already forfeit, obliterate Zant and his Shadow Beast followers with the Triforce of Wisdom, then figure-out how to restore her kingdom (Queendom? Princessdom?) from there. Remember, Ganondorf being part of this was the plot twist, not something Princess Zelda had advanced knowledge of at this point. Of course, this also brings up the question of if Princess Zelda even had access to the Triforce of Wisdom at that point, as the Light Arrows were bequeathed using the power of the Light Spirits, and her access to her Triforce part during the fight against Link when possessed could've been Ganondorf instead. Yet she DOES know of her power by the time Link returns to the Castle for her to save Midna. But by doing so she faded into nothing (only to somehow return by the end of the game), leading to another idea that her connection to the Triforce was perhaps tenuous at best. Okay, so maybe her surrendering does make sense if her power over her part of the Triforce was that pathetic - she was definitely no war-time strategist and was clearly terrified given the two nervous gulps she made during that one cut scene alone. But I still maintain that the attack doesn't make sense, nor why Ganondorf would even need Zant to begin with. Sure, he was a wizard and all, but did he _really_ have the power to break into Hyrule all on his own? A power that Ganondorf backed by the Triforce of Power lacked? I highly doubt that.

What I think is that when each character was in a moment of need their Triforce piece was given to them like when link got pulled into the twilight part of hyrule and when ganondorf was about to be executed so when princess Zelda's kingdom was Invaded she got the triforce piece And that Thundercats reference was nice (along with the super Metroid one) Nice essay long theory it was probably longer that hyrule games script lol

What if the royal family werent dead. But perhaps in another land or kingdom. And had the royal guard with them. And that is why ganondorf and zant picked this moment to strike. They somehow knew the kingdom was at its weakest. With the king and queen perhaps far away negotiating a peace treaty. Or something else. And if the attack on hyrule was swift enough word wouldnt even reach them(and even if it had they wouldnt be able to make it back in time). So while perhaps normally they would have to be the ones to surrender. Zelda was the only one currently in the kingdom. It would also explain why the defense was setup like it was. Your strongest soldiers are out on an important mission. One that perhaps not even the people of hyrule know about. So you put everyone and anyone right there at the princess' feet to make sure an attack wouldnt be successful. The way the knights went after the twilight showed lack of experience. Though no fear. Perhaps these were castletown guards. Not having seen enough battle to be royal guards. But disciplined and forged by the best. Though it also seems like they were on edge. But wouldnt you if maybe youre hearing screaming from castletown or people lower in the castle as all escape is being blocked off?

I assumed that Ganondorf was transformed by the twilight realm and was left weakened or without a body (temporarily) and had to recover. So he needed Zant. I think it took a combination of the Triforce of Power and the twilight magic to escape the twilight realm.

my guess is that it has to do with the mirror of Twilight. I'm pretty sure Midna said only the rulers could use/destroy the mirror. Ganondorf isn't a ruler, and zant usurped that power from the royal family. Maybe like what Jeremy Hassen said that Ganondorf didn't have a physical body in twilight ream (kinda like how hylians become spirits in twilight) and could really only observe the light world and give out some of his power to others. Once the thrown was taken, Zant and Ganondorf could use the mirror to hop on out of the twilight realm, use teleport magic to go directly to the castle and take it over then (and I'm assuming here) Ganondorf new about the light spirits and made sure Zant took them out one by one. This goes off a lot of assumptions, but I think it was decently implied in the story cutscenes, that it was how it played out.

According to official trading cards released around the same time as the game (Specifically Zelda's card), Zant's invasion happened on the date of Zelda's planned coronation. Had he attacked just a day later, he'd have dealt with a Queen Zelda instead of a Princess Zelda. The stuff needing delivered to the Castle that Link and Rusl discuss during the game's intro were meant as gifts for this event. This is probably why there's no mention of other members of the Hyruleian Royal Family. You don't crown a new monarch unless the old one can't rule after all.

Though not cannon, the manga answers a lot of these questions. For starters it claims that both Zelda and Link were unaware of their powers until later in the games story. Also the reason Ganondorf did not lead the invasion was because he was forced into a spirit form when he entered the twilight realm, and could not wield his powers directly.

The Light Guardians (the light animal gods) were already subdued by Zant, therefore Zelda couldn't use the powers like she could in the 3rd phase of the Gannon fight where Link had already freed the Light Gods. How many Zelda's outside the one from Skyward Sword know that they carry the blood/power of a Goddess within them? It wasn't until Majora's Mask that a "Goddess of Time" was hinted at (which people theorized back in 2002 was connected to the debunked "missing 4th Triforce part" theory), and not until Skyward Sword that she was named (as "Hylian" was a term used to describe the people of Hyrule and "Hylia" was a lake).

@@HyruleGamer That request for a sword could be a year old, but easily weeks or a month or two old. It could even be a bit of a ploy, given what we find out about the Resistance through the game. Ordon is kind of unique in that it doesn't seem to be part of Hyrule, but outside it, and in a lot of ways reminds me of the traveling troup in OoA. Logically I'd say 1 day is too short, and a week is just right for crafting time. We can presume the origin of the sword request too. A sword to be used in the coronation of the new queen, which is unlikely to be a sudden event. So there is that aswell. Another strange aspect of the Twili is it seems to hold villages and people in stasis to some degree, or maybe that is just game mechanics. We do know that the Twili seemed to be expanding outwards swiftly and steadily when link encounters it, or atleast that is how i view it, Finnally reach Ordonia and expanding still rather then suddenly springing up. I'd say Zant blitzed the kingdom in under a week, there may have been a week of corruption following as twilight spread during which most of the good soldiers died in battles (we hear something that could be interpreted this way, or to just general decline at the bar. Less then 365 days, and longer then 3 days. is my diagnosis for events. One could argue the Bokogoblins went around stealing 'tears of light' from the springs to allow twilight to advance, and that is why twilight shows up above and outside Ordon right after.

It just seems that the sword and shield being delivered to Princess Zelda from a village being recently annexed (I don't know if the game itself said Ordon was annexed, or if that came from a theory, sorry!) seems like a pretty big gift, and not just goods being imported, you know?

I don't think Zant was the one who killed the Royal family. In the Twighlight princess card game, the back of Zelda's card says she was to be coronated as queen. Which leads me to believe the sword Link was bringing to the castle was a coronation gift. In that case it would mean the former King/Queen died before the game began, because I doubt they would hold a coronation in the middle of a war.

The entire outfit and the mask are just there to hide what or who he really was...
@verdantmistral442
@verdantmistral442 3 года назад
There a couple of hiccups here. First, Zelda was supposed to crowned as queen when Zant attacked. It was likely that the King and Queen were already gone. Zant likely chose this time due to a combination its symbolic nature and the fact that it was likely a time to catch Hyrule with its guard down. Second, the task Link was sent on was to present tribute to Zelda on behalf of Ordon Village. (I think you can hear about it when you are trying to steal the sword and shield as a wolf.) Although, seeing that cutscene again... I like to see you do a video on the symbolism in the cutscenes of the game. This one has some interesting symbolism with the lighting on the Goddesses and which goddesses the camera focuses on.
@HyruleGamer

Zelda being crowned as Queen was only known via card sets right? Or is there canon proof of this? Yeah; OOT Link got sent back in time and went to the castle to warn young Zelda about Ganondorf, which leads to the execution attempt. It's highly possible that TP Zelda has some kind of written record of the entire thing, maybe even OOT Zelda's journal. She may even be aware of OOT's alternate future, depending on how much of the story the Hero of Time shared with her ancestors.

I think that Zelda would have fought if only her own life was on the line, but the entirety of Hyrule was probably already at Zants mercy in this scene. I think the reason why Zelda couldn't summon the light arrows or bow was likely due to the light spirits' captivity in twilight, as we see in the cut-scene Zelda's summons them from the spirits. As for her other powers, like ones she uses during the first phase of the final battle, I'm not sure. Those powers weren't likely connected to the light spirits', because if so they wouldn't enable Ganon to use them.

Personally one of my favorite Zelda games! I loved the indept storyline, especially with Princess Zelda since this was the first time in the series we get to really see a bit of individual personality from her character(not much but a ton more from OoT). She was the first example of an adult flawed Zelda, one that was probably scared and utterly defeated while being voluntarily locked away in that tower. My take on it was she knew of the hero from legend but she never met Link before the invasion, and didn't even see him in his true form till during the battle with Ganondorf. So in theory she didn't have the power of the hero on her side to use her own divine power with confidence, plus she was unfamiliar with the mysterious power of the twilight. It's probably not smart to fight an enemy you have no knowledge of, especially one that took down your best knights in under minutes. Also it could be that Zant attacked the castle first since there were royal guards that were outside of the castle grounds and didn't go up against the shadow beasts(Telma's bar and guards randomly around Castle Town acting like nothing happened). In fact the people around town didn't seem to know anything other than the castle might have been attacked but no one was freaking out about seeing giant shadow beasts anywhere. Now since you brought up the invasion over Hyrule it always puzzled me on what the heck is up with Ordon village and the fourth light spirit that wasn't seized??!! Ordon is just a weird place that is separated from the rest the kingdom and Ordona seems like a random spirit that just... there?? That has seriously bothered me for years so I wonder what are your thoughts on that or if you have a theory on that of your own?

Personally, I never questioned Zelda's actions; they just made sense to me. Trying to make sense of why, I didn't think it was an unfeeling, selfish, or immature decision; I personally thought she could see the bigger picture. Hyrule Gamer (you) made some good points in this video. But to go further, in Zelda lore, it has been the blood of the goddess and the spirit of the hero working in tandem to banish darkness. And the hero's spirit doesn't seem to manifest until evil does first. Would Zelda really be able to simply one-shot Zant and his forces? She has the Triforce of Wisdom, not necessarily the courageous, fighting spirit...and her arrows don't actually hurt Ganondorf in game (that I recall); they only stun him. Also, if she had the gift of sight, she might have seen a bigger picture - maybe injustices made to those in the Twilight Realm, or something else. I mean, if she had been able defeat the evil initially, the wrongs made on those in the Twilight Realm would have remained unresolved, conveniently forgotten. Regardless, she is my favorite Zelda; I vibe very strongly with her. Probably because I would have done things exactly the way she did. And I feel that compassion is often misunderstood. So I guess that is my motivation for typing this.

It's a good theory and I can actually see it happening, but there is one part that I don't believe actually fits well in this theory. At 9:38, this line Zant says is directed at the Twili Royal Family rather than the Hylian Royal Family. If you look at the whole dialogue he says in game when you confront him in the Twili throne room, he states: "You speak of magic? Still your tongue for a moment, whelp, and I will tell you of both magic and the oppression of ages... The people of our tribe...a tribe that mastered the arts of magic...were locked away in this world like insects in a cage. In the shadows we regressed, so much so that we soon knew neither anger nor hatred...nor even the faintest bloom of desire. And all of it was the fault of a useless, do-nothing royal family that had resigned itself to this miserable half-existence!" (Zant, Palace of Twilight). The Twili, powerful magic wielders, were banished to live in a realm that Zant believed to be a prison; never to see the sun or fully experience the world of Hyrule again without fatal consequences. He felt betrayed as, in his opinion, the ancestors to the Twili Royal Family turned their backs on the Twili when, instead of fighting back against the Hylian Gods that put them there, decided to make the most of their banishment; sealing the fates of the Twili to what he would come to believe to be a "miserable half-existence". The "useless, do-nothing royal family" Zant mentions wouldn't have been the Hylian Royal Family as the Hylians were the ones who had their gods banish the interlopers. The only other people that would have been considered in power at the time that would have experienced being banished to the Twilight Realm would have been the ancestors to the Twili Royal Family. To add insult to injury, Zant's also angry at the fact that Midna, the Princess and heir to the throne, was chosen over him, a servant to Midna's family, to be the next Twili ruler, continuing on to say that: "I had served and endured in that depraved household for far too long, my impudent princess. And why, you ask? Because I believed I would be the next to rule our people! THAT is why! But would they acknowledge me as their king? No! And as such, I was denied the magic powers befitting our ruler." (Zant, Palace of Twilight). In his eyes, he would have been able to undo what he believed to be a mistake of his ancestors had he been appointed as King. And yet, he was" betrayed" by the Twili when they chose Midna over him, further cementing his belief of the Twili Royal Family doing nothing against the Hylians and their gods or the Twili's own predicament. It's only when Zant met and struck a deal with Ganondorf that he began enacting his revenge: "It was then, in the thrall of hatred and despair, that I turned my eyes to the heavens...and found a god." (Zant, Palace of Twilight). Not only did he gain the power to steal away what he believed Midna and the rest of the Twili people stole from him, but he also attacked Hyrule: the villains that Zant believed were responsible for his race being imprisoned and the thorn in Ganondorf's side that served as the major obstacle in the way of obtaining the Triforce and ruling over Hyrule. After Link defeats him, Midna calls Zant out for his actions, stating that: "You want to know why none would call you king? It was your eyes, Zant. All saw it, a lust for power burning in your pupils... Did you think we'd forget our ancestors lost their king to such greed?" (Midna, Palace of Twilight). The Twili knew that Zant did not have any good intentions for the people. They knew that he only wanted the power that came with being the king and fearing that history was going to repeat itself like it did to their ancestors' king should Zant have obtained the throne, chose to pass over Zant in favor of Midna. The Twili wanted to continue living a peaceful existence and feared that Zant would have destroyed that if he had become king. Ironically enough, history did repeat itself when Zant stole the throne from Midna: not only did the power go to his head, but he was eventually killed by by his own lust for power. TL/DR: At the line mentioned at 9:38, Zant's actually mad at the Twili Royal Family for two reasons: doing nothing about the Twili being banished by the Hylian gods, instead favoring to domesticate themselves instead of going to war against Hyrule and for being passed over as king in favor of the Twilight Princess, Midna. He enacts what he believes is his peoples' revenge against Hyrule and the Hylian Royal Family the moment he meets Ganondorf and usurpes the throne from Midna, thereby providing Ganondorf a chance to rule Hyrule and Zant the Twilight Realm, but also their own downfalls when Midna joins up with Link.

Wow thanks a lot for all the feedback, much appreciated! Yeah I realised that afterwards and did try to make a correction with my pinned comment :)

I remember that Zelda was supposed to be promoted as queen the same day Zant attacked, giving her the autority to make that decision. That could mean that her parents could be dead before the invasion or they where just old and Zant killed them. Either way I'm not even sure if that is correct, but I read it somewhere.

Isn’t Zelda about to be coronated when the invasion happens? In that case there might not be any other royal family members, considering that her parents would be dead and she likely doesn’t have any siblings.

There are other comments saying it, but I actually do think that this was earlier than that same day. To kill something, it's much easier to cut off its head. To start in Hyrule Castle, or in Castle Town itself weakens the unity of Hyrule as a whole. And one thing that wasn't mentioned was the fact that those guards were corporeal, and still aware of their surroundings. Zant had yet to shatter the light spirit of the Lanayru area and plunge it into twilight. He demanded the surrender of Hyrule and it's princess to keep her from interfering. And generally speaking, Zelda seems to be needed alive to obtain her piece of the triforce. And in that moment, what could Zelda do? If she fights, she and hers *will* die. If she doesn't, she can buy time, pray to the goddesses that any life left is spared. So when the castle falls, Zant makes his way outwards to spread twilight proper like a parasite, shattering each of the light spirits to sink the land into a livable darkness, and freezing every living being that isn't made of that same dark (or who harbors unique power like Link and Zelda) into a frozen state of constant uncertainty and fear. So, he did keep his word. They lived, but only as spirits. When Link himself is attacked is when they reached Faron, and not when the deal was made. Those boblins came to aid in killing the light spirit, and Link and Ilia were in the way.

8:55 Well if they knew there was an invasion, the rest of the family probably was evacuated.

Yeah, she's probably still the ruler though. If there was an active King he probably wouldn't have fled and left his teenage daughter to fight haha.

Zelda probably also surrendered knowing she would keep the Triforce of Wisdom within her and away from Zant and Ganondorf. I don’t know if within the lore Ganondorf knows about it nor Zant. But if they got a hold of that one she knew the one who carries the triforce of Courage might not be able to help. I’m also assuming the legend of the triforce and the Hero has been passed down as it usually is.

My head canon is that the rest of the royal family was at their retreat in the Snowpeak Ruins. The symbols there are the seal of the queen’s family. Whatever royal family married the king and gave birth to Zelda

You missed one very important detail. HOW did Zant get out of the Twilight World and into the Light World? As far as we know there was no way for Twilight people to escape their banishment to the Twilight Realm, and the only gateway from the Twilight that we know of is the Mirror of Twilight, and the only time it was seen used for the first time was when the Sages sent Ganondorf into the Twilight Realm before sealing it up again. Because if you remember, the giant black rock that was use to open the Twilight Portal was chained by big massive chains, which is connected to the pillars of the Arbiter's Grounds structure, and buried deep beneath the sand when pulled up by these pillars. The way was sealed completely after Ganondorf was sent through, unless of course there was another portal which we don't know about. The timing of everything and his appearance just doesn't make sense, because there's no way the timing between Ganondorf being banished to the Twilight Realm and him granting Zant a new power happened just moments after and somehow slipped through the portal. There's just no way if the only known portal was sealed away.

I believe it was the shere combined power of himself and Ganondorf right? I think it's explained within one of the cutscenes :D

Maybe it was a sigh that Ganondorf shouldn't have tried to manipulate Zant?
