Can I just say I LOVE Japanese voice acting? Like, super into it? There’s something so menacing and yet cool about their vocal talents and range. They’re really good at getting me engaged in the drama of the characters.
Once you've seen a couple of DBZ episodes in Japanese, you'll be hooked. I'm Chinese, but don't understand to much Japanese, but I love hearing DBZ in Japanese and reading the subtitles, you really get into it more than the English version.
it's so great how his greeting to zarbon is exactly the same as how he greeted dodoria a few scenes earlier, down to the grammar. you get the sense that this is a day he's rehearsed in his head for a long time
@@yakeirr6334 i didn't notice the slight tweak in conjugation of that one verb (without going back to double-check myself; taking your word for it). does anyone know the precise difference in tone between "-dana" and "-dattana" ?
What I love about this sequence over the episodes with Vegeta is he's starts at 24,000 Dodoria, then he gets beat by Zarbon (heals and powers up), beats Zarbon, then gets beat up by Recoome, gets a bean (heals and powers up), he can see Goku's movements but he's not at Goku's 120,000 level yet, purposefully gets harmed, healed by Dende (powers up) … so by this point he's likely stronger than Goku as he landed BUT lower than Goku who is now healing and comes out to take on Frieza. It's an nice sequence of beat down come back beat down come back over and over that really gets across how Saiyan bodies follow the whole "That which does not kill you makes you stronger" mantra
Something I find kind of weird: in the manga, Zarbon tells Vegeta that Frieza is able to transform after he turns into his monster form, which is how Vegeta knows later. But no version of the anime ever includes that exchange between them despite him telling Frieza that he learned from Zarbon later on.
i think the anime writers made a wise move in removing it (it would disrupt the pitch-perfect momentum of the scene as it is here, and it's better for vegeta and the viewers to be surprised by the transformation later)...then forgot they'd made the change by the time the later scene came around =\
@@38kob I disagree, it makes Vegeta's loss to Zarbon more devastating. He's basically told he has zero chance of winning and Zarbon follows it up fantastically saying: "How do you hope to defeat the Master if you can't even beat me!!!". It's overwhelming.
@@ballzcorps5146 this scene has probably the best dialogue and momentum in the entire franchise, so above all else i'm much more interested in preserving that. also don't know why we the audience should be despairing for vegeta at this point, when we're just beginning to be seduced into rooting for him (a known villain) and want to believe he has a chance of at least complicating freeza's plans. his showdown with freeza is a more effective time to play that card, since by that point we have that much more reason to empathize with vegeta. this is one of dozens of scenes where i think the anime improves upon the manga, the only drawback is them forgetting the omission and creating a minor plothole later
@@38kob While I do agree, I don't think the point of Zarbon mentioning was to be despairing for Vegeta. But it was sort of a realization on his end that he wasn't anywhere NEAR the strength Frieza had. Zarbon saying it was the kicker, that cherry on top the shit sundae Vegeta was forced to shovel down. He's desperate to get immortality and even begs Krillin and Gohan to the point of promising to leave them in peace if they help him, it makes his team up makes more sense and why he hypes them up towards Frieza. He gets too big for his britches. If he fought Frieza and held his own without goading Frieza into transforming, we wouldn't truly feel how terrifying he is and how much of a miscalculation Vegeta truly made. It would feel more of an asspull that Dragon Ball is now mocked for. Thankfully Zarbon foreshadowing it helped make Vegeta's suffering feel more deserved despite the pity you feel for him by that point.
@@ballzcorps5146 the only thing i have to add at this point is that this is probably the only scene in the entire franchise where the (really subtle!) momentum and power dynamics of a conversation are mirrored precisely by the fight that ensues. it's just about perfect and i really do think the transformation reveal derails that flow, it's clear to me its removal was no mistake
The golden age of Dragon Ball; back when every character (main or secondary) was memorable; when every fight was unpredictable, hard-hitting and often shocking.
yep. we get several great, subtle character moments for vegeta; excellent exposition and forward motion achieved through crisp, believable dialogue; pertinent references to the series' central lore; clever foreshadowing (vegeta's line that it's a shame zarbon doesn't have his scouter - ironically if he'd had it, zarbon would've known he could stomp vegeta after transforming, which would've removed all tension from the scene); and rock solid line-by-line writing in general. the fact that the conversation's dynamic is mirrored by the power struggle in the ensuing fight is just the cherry on top. i'd say this might well be the best-written scene in the entire franchise
@@38kob nailed it Jakob. You can do an entire deep dive about the pinpoint perfect story beats of the namek saga up into I’ll say when goku arrives. To me that is truly the pinnacle of the entire DB franchise from the first episode. As great as super saiyans are, everything before Goku arriving on namek (the pinnacle) is leagues beyond anything after.
@@TactileTherapy i agree, although i'm also really fond of the arrival of future trunks (specifically the revelation of his prophecy, and his parentage) up through...oh, say, cell absorbing no. 17. still some nice moments in the rest of the cell saga but nowhere near the level of intrigue and competing villainy of the android/early cell arcs. also love pretty much everything about the majin vegeta portion of the buu saga, though obviously after his suicide is wasted in order to continue lining toei's pockets things start getting absurdly messy...
@@38kob I would agree and say the Android saga is extremely underrated. In fact, it is just about the only saga I watch over and over nowadays because 17 and 18 have arguably the best character dynamics with the main cast I’ve seen in the entire show. There’s an element of nuance to them that shonen anime doesn’t often portray. Their presence is far from trope-like and their goals and interests and how they approach is also refreshing. I do like future trunks as well especially his forthrightness when compared to some of the idiotic decision-makingthe main cast are often associated with. Japanese Gotenks is my favorite dbz character and prolly the only thing that stands out to me in the entire Buu saga. That’s not to say I don’t like the Buu saga or majin vegeta but not nearly as much as other people. Also I believe Gotenks was a sort of return to form for toriyama and I can see it in the manga and the tone of the character
Just a few moves, we all readers are already drawn into the battles even though they were all bad guys. The tension build up between the two were so good. That's how good the comic writer was at the time.
The best thing about this scene is the fact that there is no good guy here. These 2 are both evil bastards. Its like the joker and the riddler arguing and then fighting.
+Thunder Goku no, he's not. He became the anti-hero around the time of Ginyu but most probably in the fight with Freeza where he abandons his wish of ruling the galaxy and bestows Goku with the task of killing Freeza. At this time he has no allies, and just wants to kill everyone that stands in his way, become immortal and rule the galaxy. Still a villain here.
Honestly I think he became a 100% good guy when he sacrificed his life in an attempt to kill majin buu. Looking back on the events of planet namek he was never a good guy and even during the android/cell saga he was still an evil bastard. Its a very interesting show when u look at the whole series including dragon ball. I'm referencing the Japanese version, I don't acknowledge the English version, In my opinion its straight garbage. Its not a black and white show. Even goku whos supposed to be the hero of the show is not exactly superman, hes kinda selfish. All he cares about is fighting strong opponents and in dragon ball when goku was fighting piccolo jr. kami said something like "The fate of the earth doesn't seem that important to goku" Goku through out the series was saving earth almost inadvertently.
Bobby T That's where you're wrong, Goku isn't selfish. He does care about fighting strong opponents but he also cares about protecting the ones he cares about. If he didn't, he wouldn't fight. And Vegeta also wants to fight string opponents too. They're BOTH Saiyans. Goku loves his family and friends. Vegeta loves his family and friends.
My point is its not that black and white. Maybe goku loves his family but its not for certain. I mean he kind of ignored chichi through out the series and even vegeta during the cell fight said when goku refused to eat the senzu bean "Get it straight, Kakarotto is not fighting for the earth Trunks, hes fighting for the love of battle"
The very first line from Zarbon really shows how overly reliant on Scouters the Frieza force are. Zarbon Can't find a village without a scouter reliably and he can't sense energy. What was he expecting if Vegeta didn't show up? He was flying around blind.
Exactly, it was Toriyama's goal with this sort of thing, the scouters weren't accurate things and rather outdated and unreliable. Consider that Raditz scouter broke at a reading of about 22000 and that Frieza's broke at Vegeta contesting his 1st form. I can't be sure about the Japanese but I'm sure the english explains that Goku raised his power so fast and lowered it with each move that the scouter did not detect it. Also that Goku's moves were so fast it looked like he was a ghost.
I’m late to the party but scouters break due to system overload, not because of too high of a power level. When someone powers up and the scouter is trying to process the climb in power level, the scouter simply overheats and explodes. Can happen at PL 1,000 or PL 100,000,000. Doesn’t matter.
*Zarbon:* _"Vegeta! How dare you ram into me while I'm thinking about Lord Frieza and my thong!?"_ *Vegeta:* _"Yeah, just... going to ignore that one entirely."_
Nothing beats original, I grew up watching DBZ in Spanish but the original source is even better, I remember watching American tv shows and sitcoms in Spanish but after watching their original English versions they're much better.
As french We were lucky enough to have a very good voice actor for Vegeta and we kept the music and sound effects from the original Japanese version and I'm very happy about it because I grew up with it. When I think of the version that Americans had to watch with dark techno rock and some really bad times, I feel sorry for them
You know what? This was the most Favorite part of the entire series for me when i look back; since despite the basic storyline revolving around Goku and team coming to namek to revive their friends; there was a Much Deeper and Much Broader storyline going on in the Background regarding Vegeta; where he was the rebellious insurgent among the entire Frieza clan, and knew exactly who frieza was and who all the other big shot goons were. He even managed to steal 4 or 5 dragon balls right from frieza's ship! despite frieza being in it !! He was portrayed as this Bad-ass cunning survivalist BOSS who was the perfect blend of power and intellect. But then, i dont know why Akira Toriyama messed up such a BOSS character So Badly. With nappa gone, Toriyama made Goku the Vegeta, and made Vegeta the Nappa sadly. How sad. Im a Huge Vegeta fan till date and wish for This Vegeta to come back in DB Super.
I do wonder about how Vegeta really feels about Whis' offer to become the next God of Destruction. He refuses each time he is asked, but I like to think that, deep down, it's what he's always wanted; he's just afraid to admit it.
+Genesis Malakh i want to see him get strong enough and take beerus's throne as a means of revenge for what he did to King Vegeta and since it was his wish to kill all the saiyans. Also because of him slapping bulma. Id like to see Vegeta be called as King Vegeta and see him with a bad-ass high-profile saiyan army of his own who can ascend to ssj3 on will, and he being the strongest among them. I actually hate to see what's happened in BOG And Revival of F. Vegeta had more bad blood with beerus right since his childhood since beerus beat King Vegeta. Also, Frieza. WHY the Hell do they not let Vegeta take on Frieza with all his might? Back during the Namek Saga, (my favourite saga because of how Vegeta was portrayed), Vegeta took on the damn Ginyu force and was fighting the frieza clan with vengeance because of what they did to the saiyans. And now suddenly when Freiza is back, the person who Actually blew up and killed the saiyans, he chooses to let "Goku" have the fight despite such deep history of hatred which goes back all the way since he was a kid. And oddly enough, Frieza doesnt even want to fight Vegeta, he only wants Goku? I Hate Toriyama for this sissy sidekick Vegeta portrayal. I actually like DBGT Much more now (even though non cannon) since it retained what i liked in DBZ. The ssj1, 2 and 3 levels. This whole red hair-blue hair level of ascension is absolute Bullshit man.
Frieza's ki attack was a lot more concentrated. The size of the explosion isn't directly related to the actual power. Later Reccom, and Ginyu both made impressive explosions. Yet their actual damage was nowhere near Frieza's.
