I'm a hobbyist and when Maxon purchased Pixologic my heart sank. Then I got the 'thank you for being a perpetual license holder' email with discounts for the first year of subscribing... And I knew I'd be staying with 2022 indefinitely. 40$/month (480$/year) 360$/year 895$/new license 660$/upgrade... A whopping 26% discount for being a historic user. I knew free updates would run out but F that... 26%!? Not to mention the 300$ cost over the yearly plan. If Pixologic had asked me for 200$ a year or even 300$ I'd have seriously considered, but not the faceless void that is Maxon. I've loved watching all your content on my 3d journey and being a part of this mish-mash community of pros and hobbyists, but honestly I'm pretty burnt. Of course dynamic symmetry is the first real addition that benefits the entire work flow system and it's locked behind a 660$ gate. The masking updates are cool but not game changing. Dynamic symmetry though... Thank you for all your hard work here and in the community spaces. It's been a real pleasure being able to follow your instruction, but I guess this is it for me. Just can't get the Maxon taste out of my mouth. I didn't realize how much of my passion was tied up in Pixologic's community. It honestly hasn't been the same since. Maybe in a few years I'll be ready to throw down a grand on a new license but... I just can't get this taste out of my mouth. I hope the zbrush team puts the Maxon money to good use. You know. Make it worth it.

Man, end of an era! I've eagerly awaited your "what's new" videos since some version of ZBrush 4. Thanks so much for getting me up and running with ZBrush, it would have taken 10 times longer without you. I'm a hungry freelancer working part time while looking after 2 young kids. $659 a year is just too rich for my blood after paying for Houdini, Substance Suite etc... Guess I'll just ride the 2022 version until it breaks, then learn Blender or something. Thanks again, Mike.

You and Joseph Drust will always be my "goto"s for how to productively apply ZBrush in a concepting and game asset production context. @@rockon8174 If Microsoft screws something up, it certainly could. that's one reason why im a Proud Pirate. i paid for my "LIFE TIME LICENSE" i bought my license back when they proudly said "Pixologic has never charged for an update in 20 years" i buy it, and 2 years later they're charging the price of the software all over again for an UPDATE, minus like $200. yeah, To Hell with Maxon AND Pixologic. love the program, the people behind it can kiss my ENTIRE Ass.

Zbrush has been oppressing artists for years and years with it's terrible interface.. It amazes me how a simple no brainer features get so their own videos... Mud box took me 15 minutes to learn... zbrush took me a few friends bridges burnt to learn at about a year or so. Makes me wonder why I learned zbrush. hehe, I know, it's all about a good attitude, well not when your forced to eat the crap everybody else is eating. (i lied though, i didn't loose any friends on this)(just no internet fame for kissing zbrush's ass)

Yeah I feel the same way. I used to absolutely love Pixologic. They sold out to Maxon and now we have yet another subscription to sign up for. Do these software companies have any idea how unreasonably expensive all these subscriptions are? CG art is my passion. To produce my work, I need Maya, Marvelous Designer, ZBrush, Substance Painter and Designer, Photoshop, and occasionally a renderer like VRay. We're expected to pay these companies a monthly fee for the rest of our lives? That's not even remotely feasible.

I've been around Pixologic for over 15 years at this point. I know I've more than gotten my money's worth more than 5x over, but man... Talk about a big middle finger to hobbyists. I'd have tried to make room for a Pixologic subscription, but I've been around long enough to watch the faceless void that is Maxon swallow software after software. I just ethically can't click that sign up. Not after this showing.

As a perpetual license holder who refused to pay for yet another subscription, at some point in time, basically all tutorials and videos will be worthless for me as they rely on features that are now locked behind a monthly payment. I guess this was my final wakeup call to learn blender. I still love zBrush, but I guess it doesn't love me back anymore

tbf you are paying for a year of updates not a single update, not that it makes it more palatable. Probably best to wait a couple of years before upgrading now if you even need to. This is excellent QoL but il wait for some huge features before i even consider giving maxon money.

Zbrush just lost a customer. Have to buy Redshift to run Zbrush. fuck that! I knew that was going to happen, when Maxon got their greedy hands on Zbrush. Some of us don't have the extra cash to drop on a program that is hobby. Blender is starting to look good. When adobe went to subscription, I looked around and found Affinity photo. I loved it. Now, it's either blender or bootlegging Zbrush.. 🤔🤔🤔

You dont have to buy Redshift at all, what are you talking about? I dont want or need RS, I dont pay for it. ZBrush works like it was - just the RS menu is greyed out thats it.

Looking forward to this update!. I have been saying for many years that zbrush needs arbitrary symmetry. It was my number 1 favorite modifer in 3Dsmax that I always miss in zbrush. Making mech concepts is way easier now.

Maybe one day zbrush will start to understand gizmo objects that have been imported from blender/maya and use their transforms for local symmetry. Right now, I still need the subtool's origin at coordinate zero to rotate/shift it or use those troubleshooting shinenigans, but if it was already rotated when you started, you're in trouble.

I've been using zBrush since 2005 and I absolutely love it and how much it's grown as a program. It's a giant part of my workflow and completely invaluable for most of what I do digitally, BUT the last few years I've been watching Blender make huge strides with the sculpting ability, which integrates perfectly with their simulation, animation and rendering capabilities along with ALL their other really powerful modeling tools (MANY that are not in zBrush). Blender's sculpting is not to zBrush level yet but it's catching up SO fast, that I've thought many times "wonder how long til this becomes the standard or at least a viable replacement." and "I should probably start investing more time into learning Blender's sculpting, for when it becomes more mainstream (and it WILL) with artists' workflows." I used 3ds max and Maya for 15 years but now I haven't touched those programs since 2020. Anything I was doing in those programs I now do in Blender, and seeing the mountains of fantastic sculpts which are fully created and beautifully rendered in Blender.... for free... gives me pause on how much I'll continue to invest in companies that want to gouge their most faithful supporters. I've definitely got my money's worth from my zBrush license and a small fee to continue with perpetual license, at major milestone upgrades, I could justify but more than $200 it's absolutely crazy. Especially when such viable competition is getting SO close and free. I guess it's 2022.0.7 for me for the foreseeable future...

Is there a way to resize symmetrical items in place as it was possible with local symmetry before? now if you keep gizmo in the centre of one of the objects it scales this one in place and the other moves. For example if you want to change size of ears or hands that are masked out of the body? If you have subdivisions mirror and weld won't work and freezing subdivs sometimes messes everything up. Plus deleting lower and reconstruction after mirror and weld often isn't possible due to the triangles in mesh.

I can no longer move my character's arms, legs, ears, eyes symmetrically if he is not in the center of the world, before I used local symmetry to do this outside the center of the x axis, now I can't anymore, the feature doesn't seem to have been fully thought through. EDIT: The only way I found to solve it was like this: Assign a HOME STAGE in the final position and send the character to the center of the world and assign a TARGET STAGE, then I make the changes without the local symmetry, only with the symmetry in the center of the world and give a SWITCH back to the final position.

Would be cool to see things just get a symmetry gizmo on creation at the dead center. Re-finding could be useful in some cases where you want to move the plane but 99% of the time the original centerline is probably valid. Making it depend on the movement gizmo means you are going to have to noodle around with it more often to get the planes where they need to be.

@MAXON : 3 things .. 1. Start indie, studio, and enterprise pricing before your userbase dwindles. 2. Dyn. Sym.: There should be a selectable list of N most recent pivot locations/rotations that include the Original pivot pos/rot, as well as a set of user specified pivot pos/rot. +Store the original pivot in the file as well as the user specified pivot spots to re-use on file re-open. Why ? because once you make changes to the surface, you might not get that exact pivot data again at a later time as the surface normals may have changed in that spot. 3. Thank you for reading.

I tried to move two Spheres ( eyes ) with Symmetry and Local Symmetry to fit inside a hole, but Symmetry works different now, if i press local Symmetry the gizmo takes the left eye and makes symmetry only there, when i use scale into one side with X symmetry, the Gizmo loose the object so i need re center the gizmo again and again.

Some great symmetry functionality although the dog example shows it still needs work. Pity it'll cost me as much as my perpetual license to get it. Hobbyist so not really going to happen. Anyway still nice to watch Pav's what's new videos.

Thanks for the video on dynamic symmetry. Im just wondering how to achieve something that worked with the previous symmetry method (2022). Lets say I have two eyes balls, all one object. I put the gizmo in the center of the left eyeball and turn on L-Sym go to scale tool and it scales each eyeball uniformly from its center. Now in 2023 with dynamic symmetry this functionality doesn't seem to work anymore. Is there a different way to achieve this with the new system?

I cant figure out how to scale a subtool in place when its 2 separate mirrored pieces (eg. scale up eyes on place). Like before when using symmetry. Now they always scale from the center of the world of from one of the eyes leaving one eye scaled up in the right place and the other one scaled out of place so I have to do a mirror and wield to get it back.

Forgot to mention - Occasionally I use ArrayMesh - Lock Position - Lock Size - Reset - XMirror to sculpt in local symmetry on an object, and have it appear on the opposite side as well!

While this looks handy, I do have a question! As an example, if I were scaling two eyes in a symmetrical head using local symmetry, in 2022 they would scale from the centers of both eyes, keeping the center of their axis in the same position, just scaling out, but now when I use local symmetry it scales the one that has the gizmo from the center, but pushes the other away while scaling it. Using the world center just scales to and away from that world center. It seems like this adds a problem when trying to adjust multiple symmetrical objects, whether scaling or sculpting. Is there a way of getting it to scale the way it did in 2022, or will we have to just delete and mirror and weld over and over again?

I'm wondering the same thing. I really hope they fix the local sym/gizmo issue because it's really annoying. Also, just curious, my Zbrush 2023 does not save new startup materials and always defaults back to red wax. Are you having that issue? FWIW, I'm using the subscription version. I have the same issue. I'm dealing with preparing models for articulation and have to make symmetric gizmo-driven transformations all the time. The new functionality of local symmetry breaks symmetric gizmo scales of features like hands completely. Haven't yet found a way to get the old behavior back either.

I was very happy with the new local symmetry, but now I find that I can not do some things I used to do with the old local symmetry. Any function with the gizmo or transpose is screwed up now, because the symmetry is updated with the tool itself and not the mesh. Is there an option for a "legacy" local sym? I love the new system but sometimes I need the old one. Please dot tell me to use stager.

I just realized that this upgrade isn't free. As a hobbyist, this is goodbye to Zbrush for me then, I'll stick to my 2022 version and try to learn blender. Sorry Michael, I really enjoyed your tutorials, but sadly this is goodbye as I no longer can use the versions beyond this.

That great new "feature" to sculpt in symmetry on a transformed and/or rotated tool makes the stager from before updates obsolete. Overall a weak update and at same time a price hike for long time perpetual license holders and the ones that don´t wanna fall in the MaxOFF subscription trap. Sad way to see ZBrush go down like that.

Local symmetry is not perfect. It really needs options to fix scaling/sculpting issues in identical objects like the human eye. Cannot scale down by using local sym anymore. RIP.

Interesting how fast critical comments disappear on this channel. Another surprise for people with perpetual licenses, who stay on 2022.07. If your coworker or colleagues have the 2023 subscription, you can't exchange files, because they changed the file format. The 2023 Version reads older files, but when you save them, it can not be open with 2022. You'll need to export as fbx or obj. Very nice. This happens without warning. Like i said, this became worse than adobe.

So you can pose a character and still sculpt on it symmetrically?

I believe you can do that without this. You can use posable symmetry.

What's new? : the money I have to pay for the 2023 license. I bought a license with guaranteed updates FOREVER... but no, not for 2023... GG Fingers crossed, I hope it's free for 2024. I loved the pixologic philosophy and community, but now it's time to leave.

Do you really guys think something that must be a vainilla feature on any 3d software is worth the price of the upgrade you are asking for? for real? with blender at the gates?, that`s what maxon is going to do? kill zbrush by do not giving a flying f$&%ck about this software? Ps: Fix the knife brush so it don´t crash every 10 seconds, and if possible try to not charge another 600 $ for it, thanks

Zbrush has been oppressing artists for years and years with it's terrible interface.. It amazes me how a simple no brainer features get so their own videos... Mud box took me 15 minutes to learn... zbrush took me a few friends bridges burnt to learn at about a year or so. Makes me wonder why I learned zbrush. hehe, I know, it's all about a good attitude, well not when your forced to eat the crap everybody else is eating. (i lied though, i didn't loose any friends on this)(just no internet fame for kissing zbrush's ass)

i think compare the price with some free app like Blender , Zbrush must some extra useful features like ready to use character blocks , morphs ( something like reallusion character Creator ) , for normal sculpt and some Brush and mask brush why we must spend 1000 $ when we could have them free in blender !
