Zeiss Ikon Tengor 56/2 - The KING of Box Cameras

Film is more fun

In this video, I test and review the Zeiss Ikon Tengor 56/2 box camera.
This is not just a simple cardboard rectangle with a hole and spring-loaded flapper attached to it. Oh no. The 56/2 is regarded as THE pinnacle of box cameras. Zeiss has a long history of over-building their products, and the Ikon box tengor is no different.

How to load film in a Zeiss tengor box camera:
1. Pull out the silver capture knob on the left side
2. Slide back the outer back cover
3. Note: the leather strap stays connected to both sides
4. Swap the empty spool to the take-up side
5. Insert a new roll and pull the film onto the take-up spool.
6. Get the take-up roll started a few turns
7. Reinsert the loaded film carrier and Slide the cover back on
8. Push in and line up the capture knob, and advance to the first frame.
9. When the number '1' appears in the red window you're all set!

Hi there. I'm Chris. Film is more fun is a place where I share about whatever busted up old camera I'm currently shooting and tinkering with, or my meanderings in film photography. It would be pretty rad if you said what's up. I'm 99% friendly. Definitely do that. Disclaimer: If you want technical proficiency this might not be the best place. These videos are more like an elderly person navigating a tv remote control. Pretty random and confused.

It was my pleasure! There's no cardboard anywhere on this camera, it's all metal. Even the handle is leather. Zeiss went absolutely nuts on this camera.

I found one of these at an antique store about a year ago. I have shot a couple rolls of film through it ,and am impressed with the outcome. As you say, pick one up and right away you sense this is not your typical box camera!

That's a great find! I always come across plenty of Brownies at antique shoppes, they seem to be a dime a dozen. This thing is definitely beefy for sure.

Hey Jason! It's on the shelf at the moment. I'm currently on a 110 and subminature kick haha. It will be back in the rotation soon, I'm sure. The Tengor is such a fun camera to use. 🙂
@SilntObsvr

I started using box cameras before 1970 (yard sales, buy a camera for a quarter and beg Mom for film). The old classics, with glass meniscus lens, did a pretty decent job for contact prints (which is what they were designed for), but that Box Tengor is like a classic economy folder that doesn't fold. The triplet lens will stand up against more than half of the folding cameras ever made, and three focus zones is all you really need with f/9 as your largest lens opening.

@filmismorefun 2 года назад
Camera for a quarter? I'm in! I agree that f9 it's the most useful, especially compared to the standard smaller apertures in my ansco and Kodaks
@SilntObsvr
@SilntObsvr 2 года назад
@@filmismorefun Yeah, well a quarter was more money in 1969 than it is now. Gallon of gas, at least, or loaf of Wonder bread. Still, yard sale cameras were cheap when they were just "junk". I agree, f/9 and a couple smaller choices is more versatile, but you can only get away with it on a three-zone focus. For a standard fixed focus box, you have to go f/11 to f/13 or smaller.

Does anyone know who can clean the internal parts of the viewfinders and kens on these cameras? Thank you
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 11 месяцев назад
Hi there. You can try reaching out to Mark Hama and see if he works be willing to complete a CLA on it. He used to work on Yashica TLR's and he may service other cameras. If you search for "Mark Hama Yashica" his website should come up. I'm not sure if he is still actively repairing though. Good luck!
@robertyoung1777
@robertyoung1777 11 месяцев назад
Thank you. I’ll reach out to Mark. I bought one of these cameras from Ksmerastore in Finland. It all appears to be in good working order. The interior of the lens has some dust spots. The interior of the viewfinder glasses are both somewhat dirty. All in all it’s in great condition.
@ganzonomy

@@filmismorefunif you unscrew the two little screws that are at the front, align the focal and stop to the middle values, you can wiggle the front fascia off to clean it. Be warned, getting the fascia back on is an exercise in patience. You have to get the bottom aligned through the middle of the f stop selector, push down on the top slider with a jewelers screwdriver, and carefully wiggle it back on. I have a junk box I can make a video with.
