@@837haja Ramana is not talking about perspective. To the sage the waking world is no different from the dream world. Just as the dream world in is me (in my consciousness or awareness, not in my body or brain), so too is the waking world, or any other world for that matter. He is talking from his personal experience. No doubt the other authentic sages too experience the same. It is up to each of us to verify the veracity of this statement ourselves. The key is to really know, who am I? When we can answer that question, we can answer another 2 questions automatically. Who God is. What reality is. The 3 are one and the same question.

Duality depends on non-duality, but non-duality doesn't depend on duality. They aren't opposites. There is no opposite of non-duality.

Kaz was the foremost translator of Dögen on his big project with a great team of scholars who wanted accurate translations other than a guided program, so to think for yourself. Treasury of the true dharma eye, the 90+ fascicles put together to make the best book on ancestor zen/chan/modern and ancient of all time - was 100$, now Amazon has it for 70$ so I'm going to buy another one. When I say we lost Kaz - I meant that his translation seriously dwindled in quality until he downright changed every word of Cold Mountain to his own ends for the new age community it seems like, it was not a more comprehensive exact translation, which is what we came to expect from him as there is a great new Red Pine translation where he did it, though his commentary is flawed, Red Pine's Cold Mountain is the best so far - he understood it was alchemy rather than poetry totally. I believe the Chicago and San Francisco zen centers are no good - though there was once a great board of contributors to zen and translations, I do not like D.T. Suzuki because of his assumption that Americans are all Christians and worked from that point of view seriously flawed his writing and veiled his knowledge - and the other Suzuki out of the zen center was beloved but makes little sense - as well as the curriculum of study includes books that are so fluff and even misleading. So some good came out of it though with a few great translators and their independent work like yampolsky and etc. I'm in Chicago and found I had to study alone for lack of a facility that is up to my intellectual level, and having to deal with a dark side that shouldn't be there in Tibetan, rDOGs Chen, Chan, Zen, etc. Though I found a great Dai-Ji school that actually teaches the religious aspect of it, I believe it is unique here in America, located on the edge of Chicago and the suburbs. I have had no help from the staunch white outdated zen people from Christian backgrounds calling themselves with zen titles like roshi even though it is not their place to do it - it is like when they reopened the golden dawn, or like the Rosicrucians. There is a feeling of a very western essence - where there should be no essence at all. Never make a religion or organization out of zen or Buddhism, just let it be what it is, it needs no labels - does the truth need to be labeled truth? Of course not - anyway, my journey alone has been more fruitful than having to ignore most of my peers in an organization for they're ignorance would contaminate any pure teaching. Cold Mountain studied in a cave by himself and wrote graffiti all over town that the monks copied down because they knew it's worth - his last words before disappearing were, "you better get to work". And that theme echos through Tibet, or did before it was assimilated by profiteers......

Bottom line, life isn’t life; unless, you experience everything while alive. Because when you die, every bit of your memory dies with you. That’s the undeniable fact.

We are human beings so have to be that finite entity but also realise that we are beyond that. To just be the finite entity or just focus on an ideal of non dual transcendence - these are both errors. I take that from him.

I think he is trying to say that sense of self is fabricated. It is fabrication of the mind, sense of self arising in pairs in relation to something, identity assigned to someone/something and assumed to oneself. Thats one way self arises, duality. Non duality is an experience of oneness, sense of self arising as all and nothing at the same time. Thing is, experiences of this way of seeing (non duality / oneness) are temporary and changing as much as range of sense of seperated self experiences. Freedom lies in insight of seeing fabricated and passing nature of both non dual and dual experienced and perceptions.

This galloping horse represents the ordinary mind of today's world. An old basketball coach used to say "be quick but don't be in a hurry." That is to say just see that you don't fall into the mind state of hurry-worry rushing headlong blind to what is happening to and around you and the tension of the body-mind have taken you over and you can't see the game through the eyes of "being in the zone" of creative flow. In Soto Zen, just sitting and sensing the whole body posture as the breath comes and goes on its own, allows the horse (mind as we know it) to settle down. This just sitting allows the settling of everything to the level non-verbal bodily felt sensation in and around the outlines of the bodily form as simple presence. This can only be discovered by actually sitting and allowing the mind to settle sufficiently that we might get a taste of simple presence. If we can find someone who has some practice and experience of 'just sitting', we can get some pointers for discovering such. What can seem like boredom may not be boredom at all; it maybe just the mind's expectation not being met and so the mind labels it boring, or trivial, or useless or any of 10,000 labels that amount to an opinion that everybody has and thinks it is 'a fact of reality'.
