Hey everyone! I wrote this review out and published it on my website for those that are interested: gizmoslip.tech/gizmoslip-tech-reviews/2020/6/14/zephyrus-g14-honest-review-most-powerful-cpu-in-thin-amp-light-laptop-good-gamer-too
Just a couple things to note. Your performance figures look a little low. I've got a minor undervolt on my 2060, and I'm getting higher scores. www.reddit.com/r/ZephyrusG14/comments/id97ot/a_65w_2060_that_competes_with_a_110w_2060/ Undervolting is a must since the GPU is hard capped to 65W and it puts this in the league of 95-110W variants which would shift your charts a little. I don't go much higher than 72*. Also there is a new BIOS (218) that changes the fan profiles. Your temps are also really high. You may want to check the heat sink screws. I had 2 that were a little loose from the factory. I NEVER see 100*. Also, also, if you go 24GB, only the first 16GB is dual channel. For the fingerprint sensor, you need to register the same finger twice....or just buy a kensington plug in fingerprint sensor. Also, eGPUs cap out around a 2060 level performance. Someone just tested a 3080 in an eGPU enclosure on a 9900K laptop and it performed SLOWER than the native 1080 in the laptop. So no, TB3 will not future proof it lol. And of course, you can only get the r9/2060 in white in the US without the LEDs. However, there are now skins available to color or pattern swap that out such as this: i.etsystatic.com/25688917/r/il/855e86/2607824954/il_794xN.2607824954_8oyx.jpg Cheers.
i have one of these, and i mostly agree with your points, exept that for me no integrated webcam was no prob (a external one was included in the box) and i love the keyboard backlight (i have the dark-grey version so the white light on dark grey is a bigger contrast), 2 more negative points: 1. is the placement of the usb-A's, when plugging in a mouse the cable of the mouse is always in the way 2. per default there is an issue with the speakers of this laptop(have heard so from multiple people) they sometimes randomly "pop". I could fix this by turning off audio enhancement pretty easily after some research, but in general i think this is a problem where the fix shouldn't require extra diagnostics and research by the enduser. (i got the machine in early june, maybe there was an update since then where this was fixed without me realizing)
bro I got this from bestbuy 2days ago and the panel is just bad, I had it along side my alienware m17 1080p 144hz and msi gs66 1080p 240hz and it's the worse panel among the three lol it also reaches 95-99c lol
@@Walkdthock you can boost off and it will be around 70c-80c it is just the panel it is not very good but!! Compare to what are you getting you can pass this issue👍
Great review. You're the first who measure dollar per point CPU and GPU performance. Also weight to performance ratio. We got the idea how fantastic this laptop compared to others.
Great Review.really appreciate it. I already shortlisted this one and the HP Omen 2020 variant and trying to find expert option on both. I will be using my laptop mostly at home and for both work and entertainment purpose. So screen quality should be good.
@Omar Olwy Not yet bro!!As in UK the situation is little tricky as Asus for some weird reason not selling the most relevant variant which is 120HZ screen (FHD) with R9 4900 HS which is a shame and forcing consumer to buy a higher variant with WQHD(2K) screen which got only 60HZ refresh rate and hence not suitable for fast paced gaming!!!HP got its own set of problem here in UK as they are still only selling the highest variant with i7 10th gen Intel and no AMD variant is still available!!!Seems all OEM are taken it on themselves to uplifting INTEL by any means which is again a shame!!!The pandemic is adding to the woes and the shipment is slower than usual due to that...So long story short,I am still waiting for the right moment to make my move!!!😊 Going by different Review on RU-vid,what I can say is if you are a big fan of cutting edge design and small compact form factor and can live with loud fan noise specially gaming or graphics intensive tasks, should go for Asus G14,if you are too concerned about your laptop thermals and prefer quieter, less toasty laptop inbuilt webcam, more Orthodox kind of keyboard layout with nice RGB color and last but not least better screen refresh rate as per spec available , choice is yours!!😊
I currently have both the HP Omen 2020 (en0023dx) and the G14 (GA401IV). I too was comparing these two and wanted to get hands on with both since there are very little in depth reviews on the new omen. I’m a casual gamer, engineer (CAD), and mobile DJ. So performance isn’t my everything, but I appreciate not buying a laptop every year or two that will perform well and has great build. That said remarks below are after having each for only a day, will get more into them tonight. Omen screen is crazy dim (I think like 250 nits) keyboard is nice with backlight that works great. Body and lid have more flex than I like, but using this indoors on a desk all the time would be totally fine. G14 tons of reviews on this already but leaning more toward this if I can get thermals to a comfortable level. Build quality is great especially since I am out and about as a DJ with my laptop up on a stand sometimes surrounded by drunk people. Setting it up and installing some programs/running chrome and the cpu/gpu stayed cool but the underside and keyboard got warmer than I’d like for such little load. Looks like a bunch of fixes are around for thermals on this so going to see what I can do tonight. Let me know if either of you have questions about either laptop in the next day or two while I still have them both.
The G14 spec'd the same as this review is now $1200 at Best Buy. An incredible bargain! The lack of a webcam is a non-issue as I'd rather use a 1080p external webcam that I can setup in different angles.
Please also add in sound tests in product reviews in comparison to Apple products or MacBook. Great review. Look forward to an video with some light on audio performance of speakers
I bought that laptop too - to check it out. That’s the TUF laptop with 512gb, correct? The G14 outperforms that 3060 tuf laptop. I’m returning it. I was surprised.
I'm trying to keep the review simple and informative, while still containing real info that most reviews don't cover. More reviews incoming... Working on Razer Blade Pro 17 review at the moment.
I actually meant to do this. lol Here's my written review, which if you look at the headers, is the pro/con list. gizmoslip.tech/gizmoslip-tech-reviews/2020/6/14/zephyrus-g14-honest-review-most-powerful-cpu-in-thin-amp-light-laptop-good-gamer-too
honestly, anything over $2000 shouldn't even be compared to this particular model. it fills the charts with outlier junk data since, let's be real, people shopping at this price point most likely aren't considering anything above 2k
The laptops I used in the charts are the laptops I've reviewed and have undergone the exact same benchmarks and identical testing methodology. It allows me to more accurately compare performance between machines, but I haven't reviewed laptops in a while, so some of them are a bit outdated, etc. The charts will improve as I review more of the latest laptops.
There is a registry tweak you can enable on this laptop that reduces the CPU temps A LOT! I mean, I never see mine go over 75c. I'm gunna have this laptop for YEARS. I love it! Best $1400 dollars I have ever spent! Asus seriously killed the competition with the machine. I also love the build quality, and how solid it is. Props to not having a "gamer" look to it as well. Now I can hide my inner nerd when at school.
huh, your cinebench score is a bit lower than mine for some reason... I have the same laptop, except I scored 4316 instead of 3570. Could that possibly be because of the custom fan curve I set in Armoury Crate?
That is because the Cinebench R20 score I have there is the throttled score for all the laptops. That means if you run it in a continuous loop for a sustained load. It gives you the power limit of the CPU and the true workload ablity when rendering, processing stuff. I got a similar score around 4350ish on the first run only, and then the heat and power limits kick in and reduces it down.
Shabih Bhatty limit the cpu boost on battery, force the gpu to be off unless using gpu intensive programs to prevent idle power drain, turn off the back lighting on the key and reduce the screen brightness, remove the Radeonlite program, and update the bios
there is a youtube video ... the G14 is better when compared to power/size/price, but raw performance the razer blade 15 has a 7-9% better performance, not worth buying an Blade 15
You mentioned somewhere earlier in the video that there are other AMD ryzen laptops out there that may be better option, what are those please? Also Is there another slot for an additional nvme ssd?
7:00 just a tip dude please remember to put units on your graph. I mean I'm assuming noise is dB and temp is degrees C but still nice just to always have them when showing data But great video, very informative
@12:13 Gizmo speaks about charging the laptop through the 65W USB charge to get power for as much as 20 hours. Sorry folks I bought one of these for video editing but don't know much about laptop tech....can you help me understand what he meant and how do I charge to get that through the USB port. Thanks
Actually about 40 ms. Most gameplay is great and very smooth still, but competitive first person shooter players will be able to notice the difference in response time. I certainly did, and it did affect my aim just a tiny bit. But I still fragged out just fine. Most gamers wouldn't even notice frankly unless they are coming from a really high response rate display.
I just want to make sure I can edit 4k video on this while running Premiere Pro. I dont game. But the specs seem sufficient for heavy video editing, Would I be correct? Would appreciate feedback. Thank you!
I have this laptop and the whole no web cam issue really shouldn't be a major one, it's 2020 most phones and tablets have better front camera's than most laptops and you can use those. At least that what I do when working from home using my tab s6 the few times I have to use one. If they had added one for $1500 flat though it would have been a worthwhile addition to pay for though
aninnocentchild yes it’s. Basically when you have issues they will ask you to sort it out with a local partner and the global warranty should cover it. That’s what happened in my case.
By "charges" do you mean that it can get the full power out of USB-C* or just that you can also top up the battery when not using it with USB-C as well as run Chrome, Excel and other regular office applications with it? If latter, is fine, for example Razer Blade 15 allows USB-C charging. However you won't be getting full gaming power without the power adapter. *(current maximum practical for USB-C charging is 65-100W so for a gaming laptop with strong CPU and GPU at full power, this just isn't enough to run it)
I’m considering if I should buy this or not, so far I like it a lot. I would like to get the laptop at Best Buy but it’s not available online or in store so does anyone know if it’s possible in the future? Also if not where can I get it? The amazon reviews make me sceptical in buying it from there. I live in Canada🥺
This isn't boxing, I don't care about the performance/price per pound. I wan't to know performance..period. Performance per dollar seems a lot more logical than per pound
It is a very relevant metric for people that care about portability. If you don't plan on lugging your laptop frequently, I'd recommend a larger machine since larger machines can physically have better thermal dissipation.
Vidzz it’s not me at to compete with larger laptops. It’s high on the charts because it’s only competing with other thin & light laptops, and it’s by far the most powerful.
Great info!! Question I want buy this unit to Dj (hope its a good look) Amazon has it listed as such. Is that 40GB RAM wrong? I thought max RAM is 16GB? What is the exact max ram? Thanks in advance!! AASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 Gaming and Entertainment Laptop (AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS 8-Core, 40GB RAM, 1TB PCIe SSD, 14.0" Full HD (1920x1080), RTX 2060 Max-Q,...
I actually edited this video on that Asus Zephyrus. It was great to edit the video on the go. Didn’t have a problem with editing on adobe premiere and render time was surprisingly quick for how thin and light this is. It is hot to work with on your lap so just mostly edited on the desk. Screen color was accurate so no problem with color grading. I’m use to a ultra wide desktop screen for editing videos so it took me a bit to get use to a 15” screen but it’s manageable!
Hey dude ! I love your videos and feel that it's really good and honest ! But a small suggestion. I feel that you give so much of graphs. Few graphs are ok but too much of graph is a bit annoying. Please consider this to improve your videos ! Rest is perfect !!
@@spike178 UK rips off everyone, in EU you can at least get the good models for 1799.- Euro, thats fine (Ryzen 7, GTX2060, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, AnimeMatrix)
Does anyone know which exact RAM to get to upgrade it to 40gb? What I understand is that the first 16gb will act in dual channel and then the rest will act in single channel. Is that correct?
GizmoSlipTech aghhh I’d love to replace my 8700k/1070/32gb desktop and 8750h/1660ti/32gb laptop with a singular device like the g14 but lost confidence in the soldered ram
I almost decided to give this review a thumbs down due to it inaccurately depicting what the device is made of. It is NOT plastic, it is a magnesium-aluminum alloy. However, since the video is so well done and thorough and the fact that the build quality conclusion was accurate, I resisted lol. The video should be edited so people are not mislead who might be sensitive to that. Another point that people should be aware of that has been pointed out in another review that was actually discovered by others a few weeks ago is that one can easily just follow the following short video, you don't have to be technical, and literally lower your temps by 20 degrees Celsius with a very minimum performance hit, especially from a FPS perspective which I've extensively tested, as well as many others. Here is that video that deserves the credit which is tied to disabling boost. The only difference between what this video did and what I did is that I modified the Performance Mode instead of creating a new power profile which for the games I play is a perfect balance between heat, performance, and fan noise. This tweek really is a small miracle :-). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fSgwSidKgCo.html Other than that, this review is spot on with the pros and cons. The Pros far outweigh the cons unless you are an eSport gamer, but for most others, or people who play RPGs, or MMORPGS, and want to game on a lap desk on their couch, this is one of the best devices out there in such a small form factor :-).
somehing is wrong with your measurment of heat profiles. Check with Lisa on mobile tech review, she did not get that kind of heat with her test and I ususlly rely on her reveiws as spot on
Correct me if I'm wrong, so the max I can replace the user upgradable ram slot is with 16gb stick (so that would be 24gb in total) if I still want dual channel
the fingerprint scanner isn't buggy, you have to place your finger on it the same why you did when setting it up. it has to scan the exact location on your finger.
I did place the same finger, the exact same way. Did work about 20-30% of the time for me. Like I said in the video, if I rescanned my fingerprint maybe it would work better. I should actually test it some more. I am being so lazy lul. I guess I'm a little jaded since other Windows 10 laptops also have been buggy for me, even after rescanning my print.
It ABSOLUTELY is buggy as someone who has one. It may not be buggy for everyone or across every manufactured device, but for many people it is far from adequate. I have tried every tweak under the sun from a bios upgrade, uninstalling and reinstalling the Goodrix drivers, to removing and redoing the fingerprints, to using the same finger for multiple finger set ups, to moving the finger around, the fact is for me and many others, it is buggy and works only sometimes. This is despite the fact that I have a Samsung Book Flex sitting right next to it that scans my finger perfectly on the first try with whatever position my finger is in. Regardless, I still love the machine, I have a replacement coming later today so I'm going to see if it does the fingerprint better, but even if it doesn't, it so low on my list of priorities I'll just use a PIn if need be.
++BLACKSCREEN++Another - comment i did buy one from best buy , the model being reviewed and spot on here with the review, however i had to send it back to ASUS due to blackscreen issues. Totally bummed but its under warranty so they will fix it and return in a few weeks.
hey the Helios, has substandard keyboard, mediocre trackpad, etc, I never understood all the hype about the Helios. I like closer to a complete package, nice screen, very nice keyboard and trackpad because I type a lot and I am on the go, so a moust is not always handy. A very nice screen, short of 4k is fine, and not a lot heat and throttling. This laptop beats the helios hands down overall.
sadly my modell comes only with a 512gb ssd, and i cant replace it myself cause ill lose the 24month varranty, but there are no asus shops i could go to in my city to make them replace it
A deal breaker for me is how high I gotta turn up the brightness to be able to see. By the time I turn it up to see I am out of battery in a short time. And the keyboard does get too hot for me to rest my palms while typing. That puts additional strain on my wrists. Dealbreaker!
@@alejasalcedo1870 Thanks Aleja. It was the first thing I did after purchase as I had seen the tip in several reviews prior to purchase. BUT insufficient.
The laptop costs way cheaper in the u.s ... U.S: 1400$ My country: 1862$ The world isn't fair :) 400$++ for the same fking thing Could get a new phone with that
