"Why do people play MMO's solo?" Because it lets them play on their schedule and not based on the whims of being able to form a group with other people. Done. No 25 minute video needed. Don't get me wrong. Most of my best memories from MMOs are from things I did as part of a group like raiding. But I don't want to form a group to do everything.

One of my favourite things about MMOs as someone who initially got into FFXIV with a very solo mindset is the like 30second to 5 min interactions with someone randomly. Maybe you are doing the same questline at the same time so you just see them a bunch. Maybe you see two people fishing in a spot so you hop on fisher and start fishing with them and ask them "what re we fishing?". you find someone emoting in a big city and do a few emotes with them then go about your business. You can sort of have a short, fun interaction without it just eating up all that "solo downtime" that you may use to unwind at the end of the day. Microdosing socialization if you will.

23:00 FFXIV's situation is different though because Final Fantasy is an existing series. Yoshi said around an hour and twenty minutes into Letter from the Producer LXVIII that market research at Square saw a lot of people who loved Final Fantasy as a series... except for XI and XIV, which they wouldn't play because they weren't single player. And no, I didn't just know this offhand, it's just reflective of a sentiment I've seen and held over the years as someone who doesn't really like MMO's but does like Final Fantasy. I remembered this being the reason for Yoshi's reasoning so I looked back for it. But at least in the case of FFXIV(and FFXI), moving toward solo play is an attempt to get people who like the wider series to try the game who otherwise wouldn't.

45:18 To that point, Final Fantasy XI, the most notorious non-solo friendly game back in the day had a soloer job with Beastmaster. It was garbage for a very long time, but it was unique and interesting to play for what it could do. You had to Charm (i.e. mind control) mobs, noting not all mobs were charmable, and use them to kill your target. The problem is that it's random if you can charm them and if you fail to, they'll agg and often kill you while you wait for your cooldown on Charm. Not only that, but the pet enmity/threat works very differently in XI and you had to be careful on pulling threat from even the smallest of actions. Not only that again, but you also suffered experience loss because the pet was counted as a party member, making you not only get less experience points but also a detriment to any party you want to join. Tons of little details to that too that make it even worse, like the job itself without a pet was very weak. They literally penalized your player experience for playing it in many ways compared to other jobs lol. It's pretty funny in hindsight, but it still proves that soloing was always a thought even back in the day.

I absolutely loved the henchman system in GW1. My favorite aspect of it was how much control you had over them. You could pick out their skills and create custom builds for them. So you could stack one henchman with interrupts and just demolish groups of casters. As they developed the system further, you could even control where they stood, so you could position them to set up an ambush. I did 99% of the game with just me, my wife, and some henchmen.

I can't stress how much I LOVE the implementation of the trust system and duty support. I just wish they would add the feature for non-story dungeons. Now I can play around and practice learning jobs (or relearning them) in a dungeon without fear of angering people if I mess up.

It is extremely useful when you are doing the main story quest to get either immerse, being able to click on the npc without having to do the shortcut, taking a screenshot of a view without going in gpose mode. It's also very handy for people with a potato PC. I remember my gaming laptop i used to have couldn't even hold on to my own character FX during a normal savage raid. The other day I played CC and got the same guy in my group 2 matches in a row. When he died, he kept spamming "thank you" in chat for the entire time he was dead. The second match in the starting booth we kinda fought with emotes and he kept spamming. After the match he messaged me that we should solve this disagreement with a duel. We met up at the pier and fought and now were friends - at least hes on my friends list now. I'm usually a loner in the game. But the fact that i can just choose to do an activity like pvp in the same game with my character and then have a unique interaction like this really is the beauty of an MMO or especially FFXIV

I feel like if you're in a large FC or guild you're probably more likely to be playing solo because members ending developing cliques and it can feel isolating. It was an ongoing trend in every large FC I joined. It wasn't until I joined a small FC of about 10 active players that I finally felt like I was able to do content with a close group of friends.

Most of the people in this Comment section is basically describing my whole life in FFXIV to why I was a solo player for years. You'd expect to join large FCs thinking you're going to make a lot of friends just to find out that out of 100 players(I think that was the max of a large FC) the FC seems to be divided in cliques. No one just does things together, and when they DO do content together. It's the cliques together and then usually awkwardly asking one random player in the FC if they want to fill the last spot. When it comes to open world and randomly bumping into players, they ignore you 50% of the times, 30% of the times they'll think you're a weirdo for trying to play with them and do Fates or ask them if they want to do the game together with you, 10% of the times someone will randomly add you but never talk to you 5% they dont know English. And the 5% they think you're trying to flirt with them. Then another reason to play solo is most of the community acts like middle school or high school kids. I started playing FFXIV when I just turnt 18 and most of them were 1.5x and 2x older than me and acting younger than I did. Sure I love to have fun but I got tied up in frivolous nonsensical drama on every corner because of "Ooh Katie is talking to my ex and I saw them sitting together!" or "You ignored me for 1 day so I've replaced you with someone else who has time for me!" Like having friends in FFXIV felt like a full time job. lol Finally another reason why I played solo, whenever I did so happen to have friends or an FC, I was constantly dragged into doing content. I'm the type who likes to do things when I feel like doing things. And I like to progress by myself, not wait for others to catch up and such. I use to be a gillionaire in FFXIV because while my friends were busy talking in Uldah, I was playing by myself with the NPCs in Trust, leveling all of my classes to 80 and making bank and investing a house. I couldn't keep friends because I rather do things alone, not being forced to play with someone everyday all day. Ffxiv felt very stressful at times when it came to friends. I play BDO now. And this game is basically the opposite of FFXIV. You can have friends and still have fun and can play alone and never feel lonely because the chat is always moving and everyone keeps in touch with each other, no cliques, no worries of stop playing for a few days and being replaced, no being dragged to do specific content. I'm happy here lol

People forget often that a hero is more often than not a loner. Many people wish to play that archetype, even in a multiplayer game, because it is even more applicable in a social setting than that of one with no one else around. people want to be dirty harry, or superman. They dont want to be in a party with everyone who is just as powerful as them, they want to be the one who climbs the tower to saves the princess. There are certainly those who want to be apart of the xmen, and work as a team, but for everyone of those people there are eventually gonna be the wolverines or spidermen, who generally work alone.

I solo MMOs because none of my IRL friends play FFXIV. I've made friends in FFXIV but I don't usually get online until two or three hours after they've gone to bed. I really miss party-based mechanics of traditional CRPGs. Duty Support has been such a boon to me though I wish that they could get tactical bonuses like the Company Squadrons do. Granado Espada was cool in the beginning because in that MMO, you built a party of three characters and just did your thing, occasionally joining other players with their three-character party to do content together. But it was too grindy, as most Korean MMOs were in the 00's. For me, modern MMOs have turned into a CRPG with a chat client built into them.

People are sadly, needy. As am I, and I find the very concept both draining and time consuming .... If I sit down to play games, its to get away from the daily bustle and hustle. This includes MMOs. I will group up with people where the game requires it and I will enjoy my experiance doing so, but I will be far far more at ease just exploring and leveling on my own at my own pace. It's also that people often wish to take these friendships outside the game, play other games together, hang out etc... I already have all my social needs filled IRL, making more friends at this point is draining to me instead of fulfilling. It feels abit sad, but thats the reality of this mid 30's gamer, and I think a suprising number of people share these experiances, at least those that have played MMOs for a very long time 20+ years for me now, or those that are in that mid-life spectrum with tons of things outside of the games to take care of as well.

As a new MMO player (six months), I find I love solo play so that I can learn mechanics, grind for stuff, and really dive into the story. On the other hand, I really like having a lot of people who are also playing the game around. I actually found one of the biggest FC‘s I could, just so I could have an active chat window about game and non-gaming things. And the novice network on Final Fantasy 14 was invaluable. Being a new MMO player was a huge learning curve, and I can honestly say I would not have stuck with the game if there wasn’t in game support from other players there for me. Plus, it feels kind of nice to be able to help others out when I know the answer.

As someone who has been playing MMOs since 2003, and about 99% of the time solo since 2014 or so, I play MMOs still not because of the communication, but because I like the challenge and long term goals some offer. This is why, since 2003, I've been playing FFXI (with some years off in between), the ultimate example of long term goal MMORPG. I don't need to raid and I don't need the online relationships with others. I did all that shit before and made good friends. I've met some of them IRL and even still talk to a couple. For many years and to this day, I barely say anything in the game to others because I just don't want to. I like thriving communities in these games simply because I like to make money in games. I like to craft or gather or whatever and make a lot of money. Without a thriving community, you won't have an active Auction House. I am NOT even slightly saying to be the way I am. You SHOULD be playing these games for the purpose of playing with other real people, but that doesn't have to be the only reason.

Just means your ultimate goal isn't to make connections. Nothing wrong with that, as I actually find that to be the general norm these days. It was very different back in the early days of the internet and online gaming, but with EVERYTHING being online, it's easy to not feel that same way as it was back then.

i totally get that feeling even when i try to find people to talk to i can only seem to talk about what im doing in the game at the time and noone really cares about that. Unless im in a discord and actually talking to someone i cant find a connection at all.

Dont be sad over what others expect of you, did you have fun playing these games? Then why feel sad. I'm not playing an online game to make friends, I'm playing it to enjoy the game and the long-term progression it offers to me. There is this sickening mentality in modern day society that you have to be social and want to go outside etc etc.... It's simply draining to some, I'm more or less a hermit for the winter months and every year people think I'm ill or depressed etc.... I just dont feel like being around people, otherwise Im perfectly fine. But everything has to be an issue these days.

Well, if you want to make friends then get out there and talk to them! In FF it was extremely easy to connect with players, hanging out in Gridania emoting people was all I had to do when I started - not bragging just tryijg to say this is in comparison a very receptive and open community. You don’t need to rely on game mechanics forcing you together at all I know this is not easy for everyone, and social anxiety is a b*tch, but if you really want to make friends online 1. Don’t wait for an invitation, as long as you are honest and give/receive basic respect it’ll work itself out, contact others and/or join a FC 2. Be very picky about who you end up keeping close to yourself, if someone is disrespectful or too needy tell them flat-out so they can adjust… or drop them There is nothing wrong with being ‘alone’ either, like the others said. Even if you formed a community, it can be tiring to maintain it sometimes, it’s fine to disengage. And if you feel like social dynamics are murky…. ask questions 🤷🏻‍♀️ People will tell you how they as an individual would like to interact with you if you ask them and are willing to receive their answer.
@Rhodair
@Rhodair Год назад
Social dynamics is a skill as much as anything else, but learning what's valid and what to ignore, how to be charismatic, etc. takes time. It's not like you're incapable of improving - it's a matter of whether learning is a priority for you. Also, much like any other skill you're developing, you should be patient & forgiving with yourself and accept there'll be loads of mistakes made in the process. .. and if you _don't_ want to be social, that's totally cool too (so long as you don't develop a selfish attitude as a result)

~53:00 ... When I had a set community when I was younger, I would play games among that group, but before and after that time period, I was a solo player. Now adays, both because I'm older and because MMOs have been lackluster, I play mostly solo but it's EXACTLY as you're saying: my intent is not to REMAIN solo. It's just that I can't commit to a game right off the bat AND most games today, honestly, don't deserve my commitment. New World is a great example. One of my friends keeps hanging on to that game and I keep going in and out but I haven't committed to him or his group (if he has one, I think our other friends are also tepid) so I've just been soloing it and I don't think I'm going to be getting into that game very much. However, I have just gotten into Albion Online and the more into it I get the more I'm planning on joining a guild and committing to the game. I've been eyeing FFXIV and if I get into that I will definitely play the same way, starting out as a solo and ultimately joining a group. It's a very interesting concept and I definitely now see as I've been playing solo for a few years now that it is a part of MMO play that I really like and I think it creates a healthy game environment for all the reasons you, Josh, and others are saying. Very interesting topic; good vid.

Social media killed the concept of an MMO mostly, I believe... When the internet was young and the concept of playing games with people all over the world was a novelty, doing massive world events with 20-100 was awesome, stronger bonds were forged and we were having fun. Then came social media.. suddenly the appeal of global access has really lost it's charm. Study after study shows that people that spend a lot of time on social media suffer from anxiety and depression, and that's carried over into other "social experiments", MMOs included. More and more we're seeking an escape from a lot of these issues that we are clobbered with nearly every second of our waking day. Depending on the group/guild/FC you are in, people just can't keep their hot takes and triggering opinions to themselves, all nuance and empathy are gone from internet interaction. THIS.. is why people play solo.. we got access to the people of the world on a larger scale, and found out that it really sucks. People really suck (at least in an online space, IRL I have much better interactions, and regain some of my hope for humankind).

You know Facebook's older than World of Warcraft? It's not like social media didn't exist then. The internet may not have been as organized or advanced as today, but we're also not talking about the 1990s here. Social media was very much around back then too. It was a multitude of things - it's foolish to act like it's just 1 thing that caused MMOs to change.
@meriwidget3474
@meriwidget3474 Год назад
That is true in a very technical sense, they were only created months apart, same year. I also don't understand what that has to do with what I said. Of course the internet existed during that time otherwise WoW wouldn't have been created! And I never said it was the ONE thing that destroyed it I just think it's one of the bigger factors. This is intended as a discussion after all and there are many other points that were also brought up I didn't think it was necessary for me to copy paste every single reason on this thread, I was bringing up one point. But comments like yours just prove my point as to why internet interaction has become so bad, your reply shows a complete lack of nuance that I expressed in my original point, which is very damaging to an MMO.
@Rhodair
@Rhodair Год назад
@@meriwidget3474 You're post was not nuanced🤣, and you fail at reading comprehension. I never said that _you_ said it was one thing - I said you _act_ that way - it's what your sentences insinuate. I correctly _assumed_ you had more than one reason, but people could be forgiven for thinking otherwise when your post reads "Social media killed the concept of an MMO mostly" and then you never mention anything else, instead launching into some crazy boomer rant about mental health studies that have _nothing_ to do with MMOs. My point was that Facebook predated that time and wasn't even the first form of social media. You're really reaching to work backward from your conclusions.

To me MMO's are in a weird place as there is conflicting ideals within them that get juxtaposed. It's meant to be Massively Multiplayer in these games, but what you find is "small, niche groups" rather than huge swathes of communities ala New World. And a core component of that imo is skill differences in people. You will go into this "new shiny MMO" with all your mates, quickly to realise X friend doesn't have the time, Y friend is no where near as good or versed at the mechanics of the game or controls as they claimed, Z is steam rolling ahead of everyone because they are unemployed and the rest of you aren't so don't have the same time to put in. All these seemingly little/extra things are what causes people to just play by themselves for hte most part at their own pace within their own skill bracket. Honestly, having your irl friends playing an MMO with you is more stress than you could ever imagine, for the aforementiuoned reasons. TL;DR - Skill disparity between friends = more solo play (searching for others of similar Skill/Amount-of-time-to-play level) Edit: Secondly, another 2 things seemingly in conflict with each other is an abundance of both anti social people playing (mostly solo) and actually social people playing at the same time. Naturally these clashes will exists. "I've always done this by myself just fine" vs "I've only done this in groups"

People keep saying it was more social because you didnt have automatic systems grouping you up for a dungeon.... I'm sorry, but if you find LFM For Newbie Dungeon 4, need Tank, Healer still. Then getting 4 other people in there, everyone says Hi, does the dungeon without a word apart from "It's this way" or "mind this mechanic" and then at the end its a GG, bye, have a good day. That is courtesy not socializing.
@nihzit8185
@nihzit8185 Год назад
People usually had a much slower gameplay in the past. There were situations where you had to wait for the healer to reg mana quite a lot. That's still when i'm starting to do small talk in a dungeon. When someone is AFK, healer is rezzing, we are waiting for the lift etc. When i'm tanking and don't have to pause because of the game, then i simply have no time for small talk. I'm pulling, fighting, next pull, fighting, adding the next group, fighting, dungeon is over, leaving. When playing M+ in WoW there's often some smalltalk before and sometimes after the dungeon. But it's a timed mode and people are focused so... ofc the communication during the run is lowered to a minimum. I think people are social, but the expression does not add up with what people expect. Like... would you prefer a DPS that is chatting a lot over a DPS that picked up some mage food in the last run to give it to the next healer? Does it make the second one less social because he doesn't talk? People often overlook that the reaction to "i'm new" is that people slow down, wait for him to catch up, don't mind his mistakes, give him extra heals, marking focus targets. Socializing is not always about talking a lot, that's a pretty extroverted perspective.

I maybe apart of the side that prefers having friends, but since all my friends have left or moved on. It's has been very hard to find others to play with, coming from FFXI side playing together with a group was a big deal having understanding within the group we worked together for the same goal. That is very hard to find these days with the environment of the world surrounding us these days. Everyone is so self-centered and introverted to the point if so hard even to pull a hello from anyone. Since coming back to FFXIV I've found it very hard to engage others or even few the events from the FC or logon to discord to see what's new. I've become distant from almost everyone and I logon just to do dailies then logoff now. I believe maybe it's me but for the others who feel this way your not alone

I play MMOs solo, because all I got is PSO ep1+2 for GameCube and don’t have a pc yet, so yeah. Not complaining though, I prefer it over it’s sequels due to the slower but purposeful rhythmic combat of PSO. Though once I get me a good enough pc or maybe the steam deck, I’m gonna be split between PSO Blue Burst, FF11, and FF15 and I’ll have to get use to playing with groups. Luckily I have friends willing to join me on those escapades. Until then, I’ll be constantly begging friends to play PSO split screen on the GameCube. Lol

People play MMO's solo because they don't make single player games anymore, and when they do because of the grind in MMOs, the solo rpgs are 'easy' by comparison. Which is why Dark Souls was so successful. It was an RPG but it had a different kind of difficulty. Which made it hard and drawn out the time it takes to finish, and when you did finish it felt like an accomplishment.
