Zeppelin's Southern Triumph: The Untold Story of Their May '77 Alabama Concert

Right after their 1977 Silverdome success, the band was back on the road for the second leg of the tour. A still brand new venue at the time, the BJCC was the setting for a heavy handed display of skill. Led Zeppelin packed their gear and headed out to Birmingham Alabama where Jones premiered his triple neck guitar and Robert felt connected to the town's name being the American version of his hometown in England. Let's revisit the construction of the concert hall plus a musical analysis of the concert's highlights as well as some "whoops" slips. #classicrock #documentary #johnpauljones #ledzeppelin #jimmypage #johnbonham #robertplant #kashmir #stairwaytoheaven

I am so thankful that I got see LZ twice in 1977 during the middle leg of their tour. Both shows in Houston and Ft. Worth were very satisfying! The Ft. worth show being the last time I ever got to see LZ. And it was a fantastic concert. Kashmir being THE Highlight of the evening. So, my LZ experience live is bookended 7 years apart at the TCCC in Ft. Worth: 1970 and 1977.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories I really don't know if soundboards or bootlegs do those shows justice. But being at a LZ concert, in person, in the flesh, well, there's a 4th dimension there. It's just my way of saying, that no matter what a recording shows, I know how special it was at those 2 concerts. I also saw the first show of the '77 tour, in Dallas. But that was the first show, and the band overall was flat. As Robert knew and mentioned to the audience, "Welcome to our Dress Rehearsal"... I paid a price to see LZ in Houston and in Ft. Worth. I don't regret it. But as a college student, I was out on money, and by then I had -0- dollars to go and see Pink Floyd in 1977 on their "Animals" tour.

Their very 1st show before April Fool's Day Dallas, Texas was the Oklahoma Myriad 1977, I wonder how this show was ! They even changed 'Going to California' to 'Going to Oklahoma.' The audience cheered when that was sung. I even heard a recording from 1 of the 6 nights @ M.S.G. it sounded as if some people nearby were arguing about no having money for drinks/food which really spoiled the recording. Cheers !

I was at this show. I was 15 and covinced my parents to let me drive to the show. It was the first show I had heard of w/o an opening act. The ticket was 10$. It seemed like a lot. The show was in 3 parts. the first part was tightly scripted and played perfectly. Then the acoustic show was beyond belief! After that, they started to jam songs with long streaches and the drum solo where the drum riser moved to the front of the stage. It was a fantastic show. The excitement rushed through me as I waited for them to come out was wild. I couldn't believe my luck that Led Zepplin had come to my home town.

I’ve known about this HOT gig for many, many years. There’s some good 8mm color footage of it that came on some VHS tape that I got back in the late eighties. During Rock and Roll, Jimmy drops to his knees so suddenly that I’m still feeling the pain from that fall when I first saw this clip. I wonder why Seattle couldn’t have been this good of a show - seeing as it was the first show back after a three wk respite. Oh well, we’ll never know. This gig here is most definitely a standout performance! Thank you Jose for another Zeppelin journey!

20:08 "We now bring to your attention the greatest rock drummer... In the band" I have to wonder if that was just poor wording from Robert, or if he was "having a laugh" at Bonham's expense. Anyway, another outstanding video from my new favorite RU-vidr! Great job! 👍

It's such a shame that by the time The Rover came out on record Plant was no longer capable of reaching that high key. It's always been one of my favorite Zeppelin songs but unfortunately in terms of live settings it is most often relegated only to a segue way to Sick Again. Great video as always Jose, keep up the great work!!!

I agree with you M.T . When they go into the riff...it's so HEAVY. The power of 1000 tanks moving into the battlefield. I think Robert could have done it you know? I mean, he sang Whole Lotta Love.....it's not like he didn't have SOME range left. What i suspect is the structure being a bit confusing because it is. Played it at one point in a tribute band and it can get messy! Thank YOU for watching!
