Whenever I forget my reusable bags, I just punish myself by dealing with the hassle of having no bag (as opposed to buying new ones). Now, I rarely forget my bags. Negative reinforcement for the win!

I always have one or two that never leave my car, if I forget them I know I have at least one in the back seat. Once i put everything away in my house i walk it back out to the car right away.

I think u mean positive punishment. Neg. Reinforcement is the removal of a stimulus to reinforce a behavior. Technically, you're presenting an unwanted stimulus (having to carry things without a bag) in an attempt to decrease a behavior (forgetting a bag). You aren't really reinforcing a behavior; you're trying to decrease one. Its easy to mix up

@@AlluKat Negative reinforcement is when something is removed to increase the likelihood of a behavior. My thinking is that I'm removing the convenience of bags to increase the likelihood of me bringing my own bags. I think we might just be seeing things differently.

@@BrookeBaubles Realistically both can be argued. The thing I learned in psy 217 is its all about what you're trying to measure (Whether you're looking at increasing bringing your bags vs. Decreasing forgetting them as the behavior)

Hah, well a straw definitely helps with those vegetable smoothies. I'm not a fan of the taste and I sure as hell don't want a kale/beet mustache. Plus it seems to helps when drinking acidic things. Seems somewhat better for your teeth.

Wish there was bamboo electric toothbrush heads! I can’t switch out my electric toothbrush, I’m prone to cavities and the electric toothbrush makes a big difference for me

this is my issue with toothpaste. I soooo badly want to switch to a zero waste & healthier toothpaste but I have such shitty sensitive teeth that every time I've tried, I've ended up with crazy cavities

Everyone regrets their cutlery sets, but I work an office job and use it there everyday. People I work with see the bamboo utensils and it always brings up a conversation about reducing plastic! So no regrets for me! :)

I have a set I keep at work as well - which is good, since the plastic ones my employer provides have sharp edges. My boss has cut his mouth on a spoon more than once, I keep telling him to bring in some real cutlery.

I’m the same, my lunch box and cutlery go EVERYWHERE with me!! I have strict dietary requirements so always have a meal in my lunchbox with me!

I take mine with me to Disney, where they would set off metal detectors/the knife at least would be confiscated, so anywhere you're traveling with tighter security but you still might have a bite is a good venue where bamboo is OK but your home utensils would not be. :)

great idea! another thing you can do is if you don't have any reusable bags you can buy scarfs at thrift stores and use them to wrap presents! Conan Gray talked about this once

What my whole family has done for many many years is just reuse the gift bags we get. As long as the paper gift bags are still in good shape we will reuse them over and over. We really don't care if its reused. We save some money over time not a lot but still. Also we reuse and reduce. I havent bought a gift bag in a long time. Once im about to run out one of my kids bday comes up so there is my restock lol.

A good alternative to buying produce bags is to make them yourself from clothes which are too old/bad condition to donate (super easy). 2 birds one stone!

Is that something that's easy to do by hand, or would you need a sewing machine to go about that? (I only do small sewing projects/mending because I don't have a sewing machine, but I've been thinking about tackling a project like this.)

pillowcases are a great option. I switched from silk/satin to cotton so whenever I get extra pillowcases from bed sheets that's how I use them

I have NEVER paid for a reusable bag! So many companies give them away for free! Even my dentist gives them out now. ETA: you should look into some camping supplies as zero waste swaps. Campers have been trying to reduce or eliminate waste and protect the environment long before it became trendy, so camping supplies are usually incredibly minimalistic, compact, eco friendly, and can even be more cost conscious than products that are often marketed to serve as a prop, like you talked about with the straws.

Yes! I have foldable cutlery from a camping section in the store. It's no more than 5 cm long when folded and lightweight. And I have a pocketknife that I use for camping/outdoors stuff. It's victorinox, if I maintain it well it can last a lifetime. A lot of outdoor stuff is made to last!

@@snazzypazzy same here, I have always brought in (or kept at work) a normal set of cutlery, but life is so much easier now that I have foldable metal cutlery with its own pouch! Never end up without my cutlery because it's always in my bag/ goes straight back into my bag after I wash it 👌 I used to end up with either multiple (slightly) dirty cutlery in my bag, or forgetting to replace it 🤦‍♂️ much better for me to have a dedicated set and I use it every day

I got some plasticy/polyester mesh produce bags on a whim at my local grocery store ages ago (before I really started delving into this low impact lifestyle) and I loved them initially, but every RU-vid video and blog post I read where people sing praises for their bags they always show cotton/natural fiber bags. I started feeling so guilty for my cheap petrol-based bags. I've stopped feeling so guilty largely because I started watching your videos. Your philosophy of utilizing what you have on hand instead of tossing it in favor of something that's made more sustainable has really helped me. I feel better about using the plastic tupperware I still have (recycling it when it inevitably breaks and replacing it with a more sustainable option) and the produce bags I initially bought.

I agree with you. I use yeti cups(which has a plastic like straw and lid) but our oldest one is 4 years old and still looks brand new and we use them everyday. Along with our Tupperware (the brand name) containers for storage no reason to get different when what I have works and it’s from the 60s lol. They were my grandmas who was going to just throw them away in perfect condition. Heck no was I letting that happen plus they remind me of her house.

If you at least use your polyester bags frequently and wipe them down, they can be a good option especially since the cotton ones can pick up odors and be a PIA to wash.

sanityisrelative most of zero waste is just using what you have instead of buying more!! you’re reducing plastic use by having those polyester bags and that’s still really good. people get so hypocritical when it comes to sustainability and zero waste and focus on buying more and more new “better” things when they already have all the stuff they need.

Believe it or not but dentists say that using straws is better for your teeth! It stops the liquids from washing over the teeth which stops the juice acids and/or sugars from getting on your teeth.

It doesn’t stop the liquids it just mainly touches the molars. Also it is better for the teeth to drink water without a straw to wash the teeth, especially if you have been drinking stuff with sugar of acid.

I use straws because with a toddler around little hands end up in my cups if there is no lid 🙄. I've come to live my straws and it seems to help with my sensitive teeth. However, I'm hoping it won't encourage wrinkles around the lips...

@@thisisme2681 If you're drinking from a straw enough it can give you smokers lips, so yes it'll encourage wrinkles in that area as does any constant movement of facial muscle. But if it helps with your sensitive teeth it's most likely worth it anyway, it's not worth pain just to reduce slight wrinkles.

I always have to giggle a little when anyone mentions using a wash cloth as a zero waste swap. I am assuming that it’s a generational thing because I am 44 but I have always used a wash cloth. I think that cotton rounds and makeup wipes being used must be a more recent thing. When I was in high school in the early 90s and started needed to remove makeup everyone used Noxema or Ponds cold cream and a wash cloth. I use oil to cleanse now. I just use my hands to apply it and massage it into my face and eyes and then add a little water and wipe it off with a wash cloth. It used less oil then putting the oil onto your cloth to use.

I'm 36 and I have always used rags/washcloths for makeup with baby soap. I know soap is harsh but I started using it when my nephew lived with me and I ran out of cleanser and it has just stuck with me all these years later....

I have a lot too, for when friends come around ^.^ I also carry 2-3 in my bag, just in case a friend is willing to try one out when we are drinking coffee (yup, in Greece we drink cold coffee all the time!). Gifting them is a very good idea, people who wouldn't bother to make the swap now start using them because in the start they feel bad about it, then get used to it. :D

This was something I just realized after watching a minimalism documentary. I don’t have a reusable straw yet but I’ve been wanting to get them, and looking at packs of 8-10 glass straws but then I just kind of had this epiphany of like “Why on Earth would I need that many? One is plenty.” I might get one as a gift for each member of my family to carry with them, and maybe I’ll do one to carry with me and one to keep at home, but I guess it was just because plastic straws are always sold in multiples my brain naturally went to buying multiples of the glass. One situation where I’m glad my anxiety prevented me from making a decision!

When I wanted to have some cutlery, I went to the thrift store and bought three sets of silverware and six napkins, and all I need to do is wrap up the silverware (sometimes with a straw and chopsticks) in the napkins and put a hair tie around it all. Then I can just throw one in my backpack, one in my purse, and have one extra to swap out when one set gets dirty.

I just realize that I do this when I pack my lunch. Not the hair tie, but I wrap utensils in a napkin, then when I'm done, I just wrap them back in a napkin. I never thought of it as being zero waste, just an easy way to keep the dirty utensils from getting my bag dirty.

@Speaking Truth Now that I think about it, you are right. There aren't many places to eat out in the UK where we would find plastic cutlery on offer instead of the standard cheap stainless steel cutlery which just gets put in an industrial dishwasher. I can think of one hospital canteen that have plastic and that is it. Also chopsticks are usually bamboo or cheap wood. Most of my plastic utensils come from ready to eat meals or treats from supermarkets. So I join your question: Is this a US thing? That they have plastic cutlery on offer everywhere?

A basket of cheap washcloths in place of papertowels was a game changer for us. I only regret buying white ones instead of colored. They are now discolored and look weird on the counter. LOL!

I also suggest trying to find a brand that comes in a bunch of colors, because then you can buy one color this time, and next time buy a different color, so you know which are older/newer (I do this with socks)

So I have reusable plastic straws. I got them like 5 years ago before I was even interested in sustainability. For some reason I found myself looking for bamboo or metal straws to replace them when I had perfectly good straws that still looked new sitting in my cutlery drawer. It's so easy to get caught up in "sustainable products" when the most sustainable thing you can do is use what you have 😂 don't get me wrong! I get so excited when I see companies coming out with more environmentally conscious products! But it's good to keep in mind that a swap isn't always necessary 🤷‍♀️

I feel like drinking through a straw actually helps you drink more water. I find myself drinking WAY more water when I drink through a straw than when I don't have a straw. I think it's really just a mind game but it works. And I love how cold the drink is when it comes through my stainless steel straws.

People saying straws are useless is sooooo ignorant. There are so many people with disabilities who need straws (some actually need plastic straws, and that's why instead of just banning plastic straws we need biodegradable plastic straws). Also the zero waste movement is so not inclusive of disabled people. Like hey hi we exist and we don't want to be wasteful but some of us literally can not do all the zero waste things that abled body people can do. Like I try my best but my disability makes it to where I can't be as zero waste as I'd like and it sucks that's why companies also need to be putting in the work and not just individuals.

@@youtubechannel-uz9sh some disabled people can only use plastic/plastic like materials. There are some disabilities that make it dangerous to use metal straws. Paper straws dissolve in certain drinks or can dissolve in people mouths. So reusable straws are not an option for some people.

That’s not ignorance to say that since that isn’t the majority of people. When people make that statement they always refer to fully able bodied people who buy them because they think they have to it or they’re part of a zero waste kit. Like what @sustainably vegan did. Zero waste (including every single one of shelbi’s videos) for the most part encourages to do what you can with what you have. If your disability prevents you from going low waste in some areas that’s beyond your control and I’ve never seen anyone victimize or not include them for it. No ones gonna be like, “oh you have Parkison’s or multiple sclerosis? You still have to buy non plastic packaged food even tho prepackaged and already cut is better for you” So pls stop painting a picture that doesn’t exist.

That's like a white person saying racism doesn't exist because they have never experienced it or someone saying that abuse doesn't exist because they have never seen or been abused. You really need to wake up and realize you aren't the only person who exists. I never said every zero waste person is ableist, also I know that shell is chill and supports people doing their best, I love her and her videos i would never say that she is ableist or anything like that. This wasn't an attack on anyone and that fact that you are acting like it is really makes you look bad.

i use silicone straws!! they're flexible, soft, and as someone on the spectrum, they're great to chew on! (sorry if that was tmi lmao) hope this helped if you ever want a change of pace and i hope you have a wonderful day!!

Kristas natural toothpaste I get it from Amazon. Best zero waste toothpaste. In glass with a metal lid. Comes in paper package.

Every time you mention people commenting to you on the reusable straws being unnecessary, all I can think to myself is don’t people realize drinking from a straw helps reduce staining your teeth? That has always been my number one reason for preferring straws. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Especially my coffee! It hurt my soul when I had to give up my tiny coffee straws. But then I found short, skinny silicone straws that are finally filling that void!

I have a reusable bamboo spork that fits in my purse! It’s super tiny and it comes in handy a lot. Zero waste is definitely not about buying a lot of new things. But, if it is something you’ll get a lot of use out of, get it. These types of videos are great because it shows you don’t have to buy all new things to be more low waste. The best thing for the planet is using what you have! 👍😊🌎🌱

You're supposed to wet the rag BEFORE you put the oil on it?!?! Wow, I'm definitely doing it because I have the same problem of oil in my eyes. Plus, I love my metal straw. I'll never have to buy another straw in my lifetime. Saves money and the planet!!

I use cotton rounds for toner/ astringent. I apply oil cleaner to my face with my hands then rinse with warm water and wipe with a rag. Never thought of putting it on a cotton round.

That utensil set in your shout out is bamboo and/or wheat (and it’s a huge format compared to other sets so it’s perfect for those that prefer a larger knife, fork or spoon), I have this one but there are more pretty colors too. It fits together so perfectly, you stick the knife and fork through a spacing in the spoon and than the handles click together. The fun part is it will still click together without the middle part (the fork).

Because I was also always forgetting my reusable bag, or going to get groceries unplanned, I bought multiple small foldable reusable bags and put one in every bag I own (handbag, rucksack, sports bag...) - so I make sure to always have a reusable bag with me, no matter which bag I take with me. Yesss! I have been talking about the bamboo cutlery issue for awhile now! We're a vegan fam of SIX and we're not low waste or perfect, but since we can't really afford all the fancy "zero waste essentials" we just use what we have! I just keep a knife in a sheath and some silverware from home and our stainless steel straws in a little drawstring bag in our van.

There are really SO many old stainless steel silverware sets at thrift stores, I doubt anyone really needs to buy new ones unless they really like the new designs. But if you're not picky the thrift stores have them.

Sounds like the beter option to me. Seriously I applaude everyone who choces to be strict with themselves there... But Id say at the end of the day its waste if you buy something that is not necesarily needed. I understand replacing plastic... Especially cheaper ones but steel... Thats a want not a need and eventhough one will get decades of use out of it its still an unnecesarry item that is only replacing what you already have available

Yes! When my towels get so ratty that they can't be used anymore I cut them up into washcloths for cleaning and for makeup removal/face washing. It works really well! Looks a bit odd but oh well 🤷‍♀️

About the reusable bags: I keep one in my bag at all times, so I never go to a shop without a reusable bag. I then never need to buy a bag :) It’s a thin but solid bag that folds into a small little bundle.

I have always used a rag to take my makeup off. And then I can wash and use it over and over again. My skin crawls using cotton pads that you use once and toss or makeup remover wipes! You look super cute in this video! I really like your hair like that!

For my cutlery set, I just went out to a refill place near by and bought one of the little bags they have to put your reusable straws in. Works great, looks cute, and was like 3 bucks. Could have made it myself but meant more work then I was able to do at the time.

I bought this cute cutlery kit from kakao friends in korea. I love it because it is so compact and easy to clean because it is very smooth plastic. I had metal ones before from korea but they would clang around in their case so now i just use the metal utensils at home and the case for jewelry or pencils. It’s probably one of my favorite reusable buys even if it is plastic.

I used to want reusable cotton rounds but then I realized I could use a wash cloth and it would help exfoliate my skin, I’ve been using just warm water and the cloth to remove my makeup and wash my face for about ten months now and my skin is better than ever with little to no acne 😊

Same here. My skin also got a lot better and whenever I tell someone they won't believe me its possible to remove makeup with water. But now I can tell them, I'm not the only one doing it this way whose skin got better 😉💚 I wish I started doing it earlier... I bought fancy cleaning products for my skin the last 13 years and now the cheapest and easiest way is working best 😄

I don’t think I’ve ever used straws at home, only sometimes at restaurants. Straws are not necessary for children, they can drink perfectly fine without them!

Onya is a brand that sells polyester produce bags that are made from 100% recycled plastics. They are excellent and I definitely recommend them if you’re in the same boat as Shelby was!

I’ve always just wrapped my cutlery in a cloth napkin and tossed it in my lunch bag. I’ve used the same cloth napkins for 15 years now! (Buying them in a darker color helps reduce apparent stains. 😁)

In the same vein as the tripod story I find spending a decent amount of money of amazing quality linens and towels etc they last so much longer. I have towels and a quilt and blankets that have lasted me 10+ years and have a recycling programme to return them when you’re done. Far better then some other options that don’t last as long.

Love your point about buying a quality item new! I have been buying all my clothes the last year brand new because I was looking to completely rebuild my wardrobe (entered a semiprofessional workforce and had no clothes) and wanted to pay the extra for quality items I know will be lasting the next decade rather than spending a ton of time looking for gems thrifting. Now that I have my base closet filled out I can take the time to go looking for gems lol.

DON’T BUY PRODUCE BAGS!!! Try using your mesh laundry bags. You can still use them normally in the laundry after grocery shopping. That requires no cost, no demand for new products, no sewing. They are lightweight, see through, and already have a zipper to make everything easy and secure. They are literally a better version of the overpriced draw-string produce bags and you already have them Alternatively, use spare pillow cases (no need to sew or alter them so you can still use them as pillow cases after washing them), or sew some out of recycled fabric.

I don’t use bags where I can (all my fruit and veggies- but unfortunately at my local bulk store they don’t allow you to bring in your own bags or jars for items, so I have to use the plastic bags for the items that need bags (grains, legumes, etc). I try to fill them as much as I can if I know it’s something I’ll continuously get, and when I get home I put those items in jars (to last longer), and recycle the bags.

Or buy second hand reuseable bags from a thrift store... all the thrift stores in my area have a GIANT bin filled with reusable bags bc people impulse buy them but then don’t use them. It seems like the thrift stores are overwhelmed with how many reusable bags they get donated, so buying some from you thrift store for like $0.50 a piece could really help them out! 😊

If you have one of those plastic mesh body wash sponges sitting around, then you can make low effort mesh produce bags out of them. Snip the yarn that holds the middle together, stretch out the single long tube, and cut into segments of useful sizes. Twist one open end into a knot, then you can use the little twist ties to close the open end. Cleans up with dish soap, dries fast, shows contents, and is stretchy.

Agree about the cotton rounds but for a different reason. I made a bunch thinking they were the best idea ever! After reusing a few times I started getting major ache breakouts. I guess they weren't getting clean enough in the washer and were making me break out.... so now I just use a washcloth for a few days, using a different corner each day and it works so much better!

Everyone always forgets that cotton isn’t always the best option! One cotton tote needs to be used 100,000 times to have the same environment equivalent of one plastic bag. Cotton has a huge environmental impact and it’s important to keep that in mind!

I dont use produce bags at all. Just put the fruits and veggies in my cart, its going in a plastic bag at checkout anyways (this is during covid). Just thoroughly wash them when I get home.

I just realized that's saving floss especially since i find the plastic kind better. you also inspired me to start mixing my orphan foundations so I have ok options when its not a special occasion. You can buy paper bag too if you forgot your reusable one? To me they are super useful for recycling and storing things etc because I use a lot of paper as a student and artist. Also if you already bought a plastic one, just reuse it as many times as able. I feel like this is such a waste of stress when there are other things to be stressed about

Ok this is gonna sound dumb but one time my groceries didn't fit in the one bag I'd brought, but I had vowed to stop buying plastic bags so I was trying to think of something. Then I walked past the household isle and I knew what to do, I bought bin bags, took one off during /after checkout, put the groceries in there. When I got home I took out the trash and put the bin bag I used in the bin. I was low-key making a scene at checkout just by doing that (it was a small store and people are kinda unaware about plastic), and people were definitely wondering what I was doing at first and but then I got a respectful nod from someone who got it and I felt very resourceful lol and honestly the people who didn't get it didn't really give a fuck in the end so, yeah, buying bin bags is my tip haha

Depending upon your living situation, avoiding plastic bin bags is impossible. I live in an apartment and the communal dumpsters require trash to be bagged. I can't compost either because I don't have a balcony. Reusing a bin bag for groceries is better than using a single use plastic bag.

i regret all the zero-waste soap/bulk lye soap or shampoo bars. my skin is prone to dermatitis (including itchy scalp) and i find them all so irritating & honestly i hate the soap-scummy residue they leave behind. i stick to Cerave bars now. i honestly tried the eco approach to soap and it just didn't work for me. also i agree with you on the cotton rounds. a designated make-up rag or two works better.

Your tripod story is similar to my experience with winter coats. I searched high and low for the right coat for REALLY COLD (-40 days). The ones I found second hand were either too thin, or already really beaten up, and one just reeked of cigarette smoke. I ended up finding the perfect one at my local big grocery store of all places. Technically counts as fast fashion, but it's really durable and better than buying multiple ones (either new or secondhand) that fall apart every winter. Plus the inner layer zips out so I can use it as a raincoat too!

sometimes there's a need to use straw so using straws are necessary. For example when you have sensitive teeth and you have a very cold drink then there's a need to use straws. Or sometimes when there's a lot of ice and whenever you sip, the ice goes straight in your face. 😂😂

The thing about the “I want it” argument with the straws is that “I want it” justifies so much waste. That being said, there are legitimate reasons to use a reusable straw and people who question you don’t need you to explain it, ya know? You are not required to explain yourself!

Also, with the toothpaste tabs because they have baking soda they make brushing more abrasive. That is super bad for sensitive teeth because it wears down the enamel and makes them more sensitive.

That way, no matter Where we go (Restaurant Etc) I’ve got a CLEAN REUSABLE Straw for whatever I choose to drink. Saves The Establishment from having to Waste a Plastic one. The Bags, actually make Really Good GIFTS.

Here in Salem Oregon we are slowly not being able to use plastic grocery bags anymore they're switching over to where they will charge you for paper do you have to bring your own bag if you don't want to be charged. I'm making my own produce bags and instead of using plastic wrap I just made some beeswax wraps to use... we are trying to get rid of all single-use plastic in our house

Personally, I love my bamboo fork and spoon I didn’t by like a set in a pouch. I find that if I brought silverwear, forks can poke through and and they’re heavy, and I found they can bend if they get put under something heavy, but ive never had my bamboo fork or spoon break. My mom would get pissed at me for getting mascara and lipstick stains and stuff on hand towels, so I always used to just use toilet paper, but then my friend bought me those rounds and honestly I love them. I don’t wash them in the laundry, I just pour my excess hot water from boiling water for tea and then add a touch of detergent to clean them. Its super fast and easy for me and it doesn’t matter if they stain and look ugly. I do regret getting a ceramic tumblers/glass water bottles though because I always inevitably will break them within a few months.

I understand the “useful or not” argument, but 90% of the people who ask me “why did you spend money on that when you can just not use a straw” are the same people who have a pack of plastic straws in their kitchen drawer or get fast food/ Starbucks drinks everyday with a plastic straw hahaha.

Aldi near me did the special buys with those and they sold out in like 3 hours. They need to do it again, super popular. I missed out because I seriously didn’t think my area was into that. Glad they sold out.
