Hi, I was wondering if you could do a video on non-ethical companies and what ethical counterparts they have? Not just single products, but chains, restaurants, retailers etc. I didn't see a video about it on your channel but I might have missed something. Thank you!
I switched to a safety razor about a year and a half ago and spent $10 on a huge pack of blades and haven't even gone through 1/4 of them. I can't believe how much $$$ I've saved. Really one of the best decisions I've made!
Do you find it takes longer than shaving with a disposable once you get used to it? My shower is coin operated so my showers are only 6 minutes to get everything done
I have a bag i got about 6 years ago thats made from old banners around the city. The city i live in would take their banners down and turn them into reusable bags, its amazingly durable and its really pretty
I went straight from pads to menstrual cups. It took my 2 periods to get used to it, but I absolutely love it. No drying out and not diaper rash! Yay! I literally forget that I have it in.
I have started to slowly swap out disposable items for reusable items here is some items i have already swapped out. *swapped from keurig pods & buying coffee out - I now use a french press & bring my own contigo coffee traveler *No longer use plastic produce bags - I replaced with reusable produce net bags *No more plastic straws - metal straws *No longer buying cotton makeup pads - i now use the makeup eraser cloth (it works perfectly with just water! so also reduces me having to buy bottles of makeup remover ) Items on my list to swap out this year once i run out of my stocked up pile *Plastic wrap - Bees wax wrap *Plastic snack bags - Stasher bags * Aluminum Foil - silicon baking mats there is many more items on my list but those are the first 3 i want to swap out
I bought a $50 stainless steel safety razor and 100 razor blades for $13 🪒That was more than two years ago and I haven’t spent another penny on shaving since!! Best money-saving zero waste swap ever 😁
I bought a safety razor with replaceable blades. I’m lazy to shave too but if I do shave I use that. It was like $18 for my Van Der Haagen but for 5 blades it’s like $2.50 so I’ve seriously cut down that cost and I’m so freaking happy. Needed to share.
Honestly an earth hero gift card would be nice. Though in particular I’m looking for zero waste laundry swaps like dryer balls, a microfiber filter, and soap nuts. Thank you for your videos. They’re really informative and inspiring.
TheStephShorty Are they really reliable? I work long hours in a warehouse so my job is very physical which makes my flow heavy. I want to try it but am afraid because of my job.
Really looking for sustainable school supplies! That's the area I need materials in most because college textbooks are SO expensive and I usually don't have a lot of money left over for ethical, eco-minimalistic school supplies. I've never bought sustainable clothing before and always bought second-hand clothes instead for price reasons, but that is something I REALLY want to invest in as well. Keep posting amazing content
Don't know if this is a program you can take advantage of where you live. But where I am universities sometimes offer textbook rentals for a cheaper price. It might be something you can take advantage of :)
Introducing something like zero waste living is a bit daunting for college students (like myself), but I really think a lot of your swaps like Chico bags and Klean Kanteen are soooo simple that it's a NECESSITY!! Love your videos a lot ❤️
This year I’m getting a bunch of stasher bags, a smol compost and a bidet. I’ve made some solid switches over the past two years and I enjoy continuing this “zero waste” journey. Thanks for all you do!
watching this I noticed that I already made all of these swaps, as a young person and a student I'm so happy about all the trash and money I will be able to save in the future :) and I learned about all of them through you x
I can’t wait to make more changes this year! I’ve been replacing my things with zero waste versions when I run out of them and it makes me so happy! So glad to do what I can for our beautiful planet!
I'm so excited to try new zero waste and eco friendly ideas this year! Im trying to find the best way to compost in a small apartment with no yard outside!
I love love LOVE my reusable pads and have been surprised at how positive the reactions from people are when I tell them that’s what I use. I do still get self conscious if I have people over and they’re hanging to dry in my bathroom but hey I haven’t bought pads in the past 5 years so totally worth the $20 cost upfront!
Period underwear is insanely cool! I've bought 3 pairs + some reusable pads and now I feel way more comfortable on my periods + almost don't generate waste. Now I really want to buy couple of pairs for my younger sister: she got her periods last year and she hates the regular pads (completely agree) and she has a flow similar to mine so I think she would like period undies
I’ve started using reusable pads in stead of normal ones. I’ve always used organic cotton ones, but they start itching a lot of the time. They also tear apart when I dance (I’m still in school, but I dance a lot of different dance styles in my free time). It’s been so much better since I switched.
My fav zero waste swaps are: -My 40 oz HydroFlask for my water -My 21 oz HydroFlask for getting coffee out -Reusable Keurig Pods -Making cowboy coffee -Meal prepping even if my tupperware is plastic. -My reusable metal straw (Mine was a gift from the husband and it was from Etsy and has my nickname on it) -My safety razor -Bar soap -Shampoo bar -Reusable grocery bags -DivaCup -6 pack of menstrual pads -Thrifting all of my clothes -Buying essential oils and using them for DIY toothpaste, DIY lotion, DIY hair masks, DIY perfume, diffusing. -Reusing glass jars from salsa/PB to make pickled red onions, pickles, storing stuff etc. -Just using glassware instead of disposable cups, plates, forks, knives, spoons etc. -Bamboo cutlery set for travel. -using boxes from my job for moving, sending packages in, giving gifts in. -Using vinegar for cleaning. -Dr Bronners soap. It’s everything. -Shopping at Lush with those returnable pots for a mask and buying other naked products. -My PELA CASE!! I have the honeybee one 💟 I can’t think of more but you have encouraged this journey for me over the end of 2018 through now Shelbi. Thank you.
One not necessarily “zero waste” swap but sustainable project I’ve wanted to do forever is convert my bike to an electric one/a bike that can travel long distances. Basically electrifying a bike makes it less physically intensive to bike really long distances which is something I’d like to do more of. Oftentimes the battery even charges on the kinetic energy of the bike too so there isn’t a lot of electricity that goes into the bike. One thing that I’m planning on doing at the end of this semester is bike from my college in Burlington VT back home to Massachusetts, which I’d have to get a bike trailer/more storage on my bike for all my stuff, and possibly electrify the bike as well to make the journey easier physically. I just think it would’ve really beautiful to bike through vermont and NH during the summer to get to and from college without creating any emissions. Sorry for such a long post! Anyways I loved the video Shelbi and congratulations on (almost) 200k!!!
I'm a biker too. Just fell on the ice today haha. The light on my bike currently lights with kinetic energy. I've been thinking about wanting to do biking trips too, but more in the sense of exercise. But now that I think about it, it might be cool to have the ability to go further sooner, and to think about it more as an extension of transportation. I bike 1-5 km currently but longer than that I feel lazy and take the buss.
Your videos always make me feel so much better about how I live. I always thought "damn, I don't carry my coffee cup everywhere and sometimes I buy food in plastic and I've only just stopped in the last year shopping at unsustainable clothing brands, but some of these I've been doing for years. I have a period cup, I switched from pads to a New Zealand brand and it was super easy, way less stressful than pads too, my mom and I have been using grocery bags for years because New Zealand doesn't really allow plastic bags anymore, I have a straw for my bubble tea, we've recycled anything we could ever since I was little, it just really helps when I'm feeling low or down on myself for where I am in my sustainability journey to know that I'm doing much more than I realised, and doing better is better than doing nothing.
I was doing really well with sustainable swaps over the summer, but I will fully admit to slacking off quite a bit over the last semester. I’m definitely trying to get back on track! Here are some of the things I’m doing: • I got an off-brand makeup eraser cloth over the holidays and that has replaced makeup wipes • I’m cooking and baking more so I’m not buying snacks wrapped in plastic • I got a reusable smart notebook which has replaced notebooks that would only get filled halfway and has freed up more space in my backpack
Great video! I am new to the zero waste community but NOT new to sustainability, your videos are so inspiring and I am motivated to get the word out about attainable sustainability!
Hey Shelbi, can you do a video about zero waste swaps for school supplies? There is sooooo much plastic!!! Thanks - love watching all the good that you educate the world to do! Excited to see you hit 200K.
Chico Bag and Klean Kanteen are both proud Chico, CA Companies. My cousin's husband has worked in marketing for Klean Kanteen over 10 years and he talks about how small the company is. Their #1 mission is sustainability. They do not collaborate with companies who are not sustainably-conscious and want to keep products 100% out of landfills. Chico Bag is so cool and very easy to just keep in your car. I received my first bag recently and I use it all the time!!! The engineering firm I work for gave us custom Chico Bags to use and I love it. I actually use that one the most alongside another, which is saying something! There are definitely alternatives for both brands, and you dont *have* to have these particular ones to be sustainable, but these small companies are infinitely proud of what they are trying to accomplish and really need your help to keep doing good! Thanks for the mention, Shelbi! Living in this small California college town, I have found that Chico is a great place to get in touch with people who want to help the planet, and with the earth itself. 🌎💚
Hi! Just wanted to let you know that I love how your videos are always friendly and educational at the same time:) I’m becoming environmentally conscious bit by bit with your videos. Keep going girl😘 Huge hugs from Japan!🇯🇵
Star Gazer I’m still looking for the best alternative for me... :( At this moment I’m saving up for some cloth pads. As a student, I want to be sure I spend my (little) money on something that I can keep for forever. Can you recommend a company or certain type of cloth pads?
My sort of zero waste time of the month was just have kids back to back and nurse them. My youngest is 9 months and i still dont have it. Though i feel it coming on any day. And now that i have to start worrying about it again im looking for more sustainable solutions
Hope your dad is doing well and that 2020 is starting to go right for you. Thanks for this video!! I’ve been following for years and love your channel. I’ve been wanting to begin a more sustainable lifestyle for a long time. That is what most of my 2020 goals are filled with, looking forward to it. Thanks for your help. ❤️ 🌎
Shelbi! I recently bought dryer balls because I honestly couldn’t take the static anymore (you could literally see the static on my blankets, towels, etc) and I love them! I haven’t bought dryer sheets since I started college because I couldn’t be bothered 🤷🏼♀️ thank you so so much for your laundry video! I remembered you mentioning Madison liking them so I figured why not
in 2020 i’m entering the working world! just graduated college and moving into my first full-time job. i’m working towards lessening my waste when it comes to bringing lunch!
First, I would like to thank you for all your information on zero waste. The one thing that I'd love to get is any of the kitchen things. The storage bags, grocery bags, the folding straws and water bottle. I have metal straws and love them.. Congratulations on your viewing subscriptions. You are making a difference in the world, one video at a time.m
For 2020 I'm completely starting over my life, I lost everything I owned in august, Currently im staying with my boyfriend's family, but I am going to have to replace everything, kitchen things, bathroom things living room furniture etc... I want to do this in a sustainable minimal way.
Reusable pads changed my life! They are just better than throwaway pads in everyway and BEAUTIFUL! I have sensitive skin and sometimes perfumes in disposable pads would give me a rash or a break of excema.
Without sounding creepy, I'm really looking forward to the period routine video😅 I would really like to switch into the reusable underwear, but I'm scared they won't hold enough liquid😫😖
I bought some. Konda pricey but they work. You still need a pad. I use a reusable pad with mine. They are not ment to be used directly for your period. More like a backup. Mine also stained due to my blood (turned the cloth white though I read that its normal due to the acidic nature of the vagina and my pcos) even though they where black. I still recomend them but keep in mind that they are ment to be used in a particular way and may stain still.
@@alexandriadavis15 I always wondered, thank you for the advice. I hear some people just use the underwear on its own, but I don't think I would consider my flow "light". I'll definitely get reusable pads in black if they have them. Also, I hope she shares how to wash them, I feel weird about washing them mixed in with all my clothes.
I've been watching your channel for a while but just realized I wasn't subscribed, happy to hit that button and support you in your endeavors and in the yt algorithms. Much love mama! I really appreciate your content, your videos are my go to to send to friends (and my parents) when I want to help expose/explain aspects/inspiration for sustainability and zero waste!!!!
New subbie here! Love your personnality and your content! You go girl! Moving out this year and so I am trying to get substainable furnitures and appartment essentials 😣😣 slowly transitionning to low waste living and getting there step by step!
So I switched from pads to cups without going to tampons and personaly its a lot more comfortable than a tampon (I tried but they hurt for me) the only thing about a cup is you do need to get used to it, but it doesnt take that long.
So excited to hear Earth hero are aiming to ship internationally, I'm in the UK & have been waiting for them to update this on their FAQ page! There are a handful of websites that are UK based that sell sustainable products but nothing like earth hero, this is fantastic news! Thank you for the great content as usual 😊
My wishlist for 2020 as I move towards zero plastic are: * lightweight cotton/burlap drawstring bags for bulk food * a microplastic catcher for the washer * beeswax wraps in geeky patterns * zero plastic deodorant (I lean towards lavender & cucumber scents, so that is what I'm looking into) * a set of metal travel utensils * a collapsible straw that is easier to carrying with me than my long metal ones * more mason jars and such for storing bulk or farmer's market products * compostable dish sponges & shower sponges * compost bins
I love my Kleen kanteen! I bought their coffee mug with the handle lid and it keeps my coffee hot aaaall day. Tested it out today on a 3 degree F day walking around all day and it stayed hot the whole time! I would highly reccomend
I LOVE your channel Shelbi! You have been a huge part of my journey towards a more sustainable life. I would love to be able to start composting my pet waste (I have a cat and a dog) in my small backyard! It’s something I’ve been wanting to do for a while and just haven’t been able to. I currently compost all of my food scraps, paper, and such in a worm factory but need a good solution for my pet waste. This would be a huge step forward in my zero waste journey 🌿🌎❤️
I got my grandma some stasher bags for Christmas because she loved the glass straw I got her a few months prior and she was sooo excited! It was so cute :)
New here-- hello! These videos are great Shelbi! I've already got the basics down: plant-based, use a composting service, have the bottles and reusable bags, and am starting to bulk shop. But, increasing my sustainability is one of my goals this year, and I love the positivity and inspiration you're throwing out there! Keep up the great work! (And thanks a bunch for those sweet discount codes!) 🙌
I love that you mention not to throw out your existing dish brushes and maybe instead use them for gross around the house needs and I wish you'd mention something similar with disposable zip lock type bags. We are planning to send our unused baggies and saran wrap to TerraCycle but we have several we've washed and reused and it makes more sense to keep using those til they fall apart before investing in more stasher bags as it's basically the same thing: washing and reusing.
I also talked to my partner about the filter you just put on your washing machine. We plan to move the machine in the next year or two, and she’s happy to help me get a filter installed when we do that!
A water cooler and reusable bottle would be awesome!! In my town, the water is not drinkable (it tastes horrible), so literally everyone has a water cooler with the refillable 5gallon jugs, I think it's a great way to totally avoid plastic water bottles, since you consistently reuse and refill the large ones
I’m going to be looking into stasher freezer bags and food solutions to help out my kitchen! I also am going to be using cloth diapers this year for the first time. Pretty excited about it!
I’m fairly new to living sustainable (for about a year now), and thank you so much for the valuable info you’ve added to my new lifestyle. This year, I hope to add a Berkeley Water filter system to my newly sustainable home. I get so excited when I find sustainable swaps for things I used in the past, and the 2.5 gallon Berkeley is my goal for this year.
I've been better about bringing my reusable bags at the store, using my car less or plan my outings more accordingly to reduce my carbon footprint in that way. I always tell my friends and family what you say at the end of your videos when they used to ask why I even bothered or what I was doing wouldn't really change things anymore, but slowly they have adopted some zero waste mentality over the short time I have been attempting my best. My youngest brother refuses straws and one day just looked at me after he said no to the cashier and said "we don't need those right?" I was so gosh dang proud and happy. My best friend shows me whenever she buys something eco friendly like glass straws and reusable stasher like bags. I see my small changes and consistentency spread out around me and THAT is one of the biggest things that motivate me to keep going even if I'm not at the level of lesser waste where I would like to be
Regarding the pad-to-cup swap: You can totally do that! 😊 I had been using pads for more than ten years, used a tampon maybe 4-5 times, and I made the swap 😉 It took a little time to get the hang of it, but now I will never switch back 😍😍 I realized how much I HATED that feeling of blood blubbering out of me, so switching to a cup was one of the best decisions of my life 😊😊
Period cups are the best!!! Tried one and never looked back. Or more honestly: I did look back and wondered, which I haven‘t learned about these 20 years earlier!?
Intimina has a new reusable disc mensural cup! It seems like a lot easier to use than traditional cups. There’s a big learning curve with normal cups and sometimes the first cup you buy isn’t the cup for you and that’s frustrating cause it’s not like you can give those things away!
This year I am so excited to start a new business. I just bought a home I am converting into a short term rental property (airbnb, vrbo, homeaway) and it is so important to me to make sure it is as eco friendly and as sustainable as I can make it. I would love to see a video on this topic. I'm new to all of this but I am so excited to get started! What would everyone like to see in a place like this? Everyone's opinion is appreciated!!! Love you Shelbi!! I love this channel it has helped me in so many ways, thank you! 😊❤✌
It's so perfect to come across your channel at a time when i'm about to make some major changes to how we purchase and store things. in 2020 I wish to come up with storage solutions in my pantry and fridge and linens closets.
Stasher bags are something I have a goal to build a collection of in 2020. We are a family of five and I watch two other kids during the day. Glass is hard to use with little kids when out and about. Also schools don’t allow glass. Plus the kids really bang up metal togo containers. With being a big busy family I also freezer prep meals and would love to have a better way then store meals.
Hey I know this is months late, but ive been binge watching your chanel. Yay quarentine. Im really inspired, to keep pushing on my sustainablity journey. Im at a middle ground now, I've done a lot, but not all, of the beginner things. The UK has a very different culture here that is maybe(?) slightly more inclined toward zero waste. Having grown up in the states im shocked at the lack of sustainable infastructure that does exist in europe. Also dishwashers and dryers just do not exist in the working class like they do in the US. For the people asking about uk earth hero shops: theres not an online one that I know of BUT if you live in Leeds the jar tree is a local family run zero waste shop. They have a wide
Slowly but surely making swaps. Last year for Christmas I asked for reusable cotton pads, a safety razor which seems to be more sustainable and in the new year I bought myself some reusable sanitary pads which I love. They’re so much comfy. I’ve been using a reusable water bottle, straw and coffee cup for a while now. Hoping to make some more swaps this year
Also planning to purchase some shampoo bars and conditioners this month. On the mention of beauty products I’ve decided to take part in a low buy and use up what I have.
My favorite recent swaps have definitely been cloths instead of paper towels (easing into it with washable bamboo ones that last a bunch of washes), a menstrual cup, and dropps dishwasher detergent. Next I want to make dish soap and little rounds for my makeup removal.
About reusable menstrual products: a menstrual cup coupled with a period underwear or cloth pad as backup is AMAZING for heavy bleeders. It’s the only thing that finally got me to have stress-free periods and it honestly changed my life and how comfortable I am in my body.
I swapped out laundry soap (allergic to so much) soap nuts purchased from earthhero I do not use a dryer, fresh wind breezed outside or just hangup on drying rack inside.i am intimidated on safety razor..happy 2019 too 2020..
I went straight from disposable period products to a cup in 2018, I use a collapsible one from a brand called intimina lily cup which was £20, and they have different sizes available. I experienced a leak once when I was starting to use it but now it really works for me but they don't work for everyone. The most important thing is boiling it before and after every cycle for 20 mins to sterilise it. There was a cup that was recently made where when you squeeze the stem the blood comes out without you having to take it out which sounds good for when you're in a public bathroom and unable to wash it in the sink, but they do recommend taking it out 2-3 times a day to empty it.
My big aim is to make a compost for my garden. In Australia we have such terrible droughts at the moment and as you know - bad bushfires. My area has been lucky so far but my yard is so dry and brown - at the moment I take my veg peelings to work for a company there but i would love my own ! Love your channel
I just came across your channel while looking for more information about zero waste, and I must say I am charmed by your energy and charisma. Yes of course I will be part of your journey to 200K subs and more! Keep making your awesome content, I will be looking forward to it
Great ideas and I just purchased dryer balls. I hate using fabric softener and needed a solution. I just have to get Hubby onboard with my green 2020 theme. I also want to work on making my own natural/green cleaning products etc. Keep up the great work. 🌸🌿
The one thing I've been trying to find is a reusable to go coffee cup with a handle. Ive seen some around but I want to invest in a really good one that will last. ^^
Highly recommend the "Put a Cup in it" Facebook swap group. Finding the right cup or disc for you and your bits can take a little trial and error, and this is a great way to source them second-hand and to have a way to sell ones that you might buy that don't fitperfectly. You can also buy a few of them and try them out and compare. There are also some people in the group who sell period underwear or reusable pads. It's a great resource!
Thank you for another great video!! One thing I reallyyyy want to start doing is using a compost pick up service. It would drastically reduce my landfill waste but I haven’t sprung for it yet. $20-40/monthly in my area. Might be a harder giveaway gift as it’s different for different areas but it’s nice that it’s not a physical item either!
This video contains so many ideas I had not thought of using!! In 2020 I am trying to invest in more sustainably made clothing to stop my use of fast fashion, or kitchenware for when i'm off to uni this year (to study environmental science :) )
How do you feel about Yeti? I have a Yeti tumbler that I use for both coffee but also soda and I totally love it. I’ve read good things but would love to hear your opinions.
Thank you thank you thank you!! You have opened our eyes! You’re such inspiration to us. My husband and I are changing our ways thanks to you! Our next investment it’s going to be the stasher bags! Congrats on the 200K!🎉 love from California
For any fellow Aussies: Flora and Fauna is a great website based in NSW that you get many of these swaps (they are the only place to buy Elate products in Australia). Biome is also another great Aussie website to get sustainable items.
I definitely am trying to make more sustainable kitchen swaps. I cook a lot and most of the time I don’t have the extra to fork into purchasing swaps that I definitely would need. Another thing is anything to shop with. I have a ton of grocery bags that are reusable and I use them a lot. And sustainable clothing is something I’m trying to swap bc I go through pants hard and if it’s at its end of life I tend to cut it up and use it as a pillow fluff
For your video on safety razors: can you also try the brand Leaf? It’s not a safety razor it’s more of a traditional razor but the website says the only waste are the blades. So there’s no plastic cartridge just changing blades!
