In today's video I am going through my zero waste habits that I do in summer. These have changed a little since moving to the US, considering the climate is very different as well as the attitudes towards consumption and sustainability. From saving water and seeds, to composting and eating seasonally, this video covers a lot of my zero waste journey and where we are going !

Also, think about making a bee bath in the garden especially with so many bees and water scarcity as you mentioned.

I also just got a sewing machine and I must say I look at clothes completely different now. Because I see all the effort put into just one piece and idk now I really want to look at where my clothes are made or even better try to do them myself 😊❤️

Something I've really enjoyed learning about are the native plants that our native bees and insects need to thrive. I have quite a few without realising! Yarrow is a wonderful lazy cottage garden flower that bees and butterflies love, but even hover flies, lacewings, ladybugs, and predatory wasps! It's amazing what an ecosystem you can make. If you're looking for edible pollinator plants too - mountain mint is LOVELY dried as tea and when you plant extra, the pollinators love the flowers. ♥ Gosh, I could keep going, but let's not overwhelm you. 😂

I am restarting my kombucha croc and will be starting a sourdough starter when I return from vacation. I will be learning how to make spicy kimchi and sauerkraut as well. Oh and I made my first jar of cruchy peanut butter and raw almond butter yesterday and I was so excited😁! I’m a 61 yrs old minimalist and have been sewing up hole in my clothing to save money for a long time. I’m semi-retired since i was able to save one paycheck a month for two years before the pandemic started and I’m also WFPB. Looking forward to seeing what you’ve got coming for this month. So how are you liking the hot☀ ass summer weather here in Denver? ☀

Hi Immy :) this summer I’ve been reading Barbara Kingsolver’s book “animal vegetable miracle”. It talks a lot about the importance of local food, and I think you’ll enjoy it! It’s from a while ago, so it’s possible you’ve read it, but if you haven’t I strongly recommend.

Low waste so far, reading a book from the library called The Well-Gardened Mind by Sue Stuart-Smith. I think you would love this book. Using my grass clippings for weed reduction purposes. Charity shopped a beautiful lace crocheted table cloth for my friends funeral. I'm using as many flowers as I can from my garden for the funeral. Got the vases for funeral at charity shop. Found a gorgeous vintage wall lamp for $5 at a charity shop. I rewired with new safe electrical parts. Found another gorgeous lamp at charity shop but got bulb at Habitat for humanity. Drying large blankets on clothes line outside. And much more...

It's clear that you are very dedicated to reducing waste and food preservation, your garden looks amazing🤗 I am the one who discussed cotton and water consumption. You are able to purchase organic sustainable cotton which uses far less water and chemicals. It maybe expensive though. I wish you the best of luck with your harvest.🙏

I've been excited to try using the whole watermelon after watching some videos this summer. Usually I throw away the rind and peel, just eat the red fruit. But apparently you use the peel like it is wheat grass in smoothies, and the only thing I knew about watermelon rind was that some people pickle them and I didn't want to do that. Now I've learned you can also put the rind in smoothies (it is nutritious in a different way than the fruit), make kimchi with it, saute it, and even freeze it. Fun experiments!

I usually water my vegetables after sunset. I was tought that it is better for the plants that have the whole night to absorb the water and face the sun the day after. Tomatoes don't need too much water, every other day if it's really hot or every two days. Most of the plants want their water at the roots, not on their leaves. No lemon juice in pesto ;-) That's the recipe from Italy 😀

Home cold brew is a game changer! Myself I often prefer iced coffee (the Japanese or “flash brew” style where you do a concentrated brew over ice, so instead of using let’s say 250g water you use 150g and then 100g ice). It’s so fun, less wait, and you end up using less coffee. A hack for my fellow coffeeheads 😂
