Yeah, 4:27! I know guys that can run under 5:00 for a half and have done it at 5:10s myself, but 4:30 range is just too nuts for me to even fathom as possible. I'll take that pace for a 5k, let alone a damn half marathon.
It helps that he is only 5' 3", a little short even for African distance runners. At that point, I imagine that having a high cadence (but slightly shorter stride also) comes a to more naturally even at a distance like the half.
It amazes me how people cannot leave a runner alone right after they finish. Let them take a breather, stop handing them flowers and stop talking to them. It's like they've never crossed a finish line in their lives.
All Zersenay did on this day was run a 27:40 10-K, which, if it were done on the track, would meet the highest qualifying standards for 10000 meters at the most recent Olympics and World Championships. Then he ran another one. Then he decided to keep up that pace for another kilometer after that. 58:23...what a time.
This was a piece of cake for Tadese, a man accustomed to running olympic finals and majors along with elite top runners such as Kenenisa Bekele, Eliud Kipchoge, Mo Farah, or Sileshi Sihine.
NEW WORLD RECORD FROM A NEW YOUNG NATION, ERITREA!!!! Zeray Jigna-Wedi-Jeganu,,, Thank you for representing my good people & my beloved homeland, ERITREA. You are an ETERNAL HERO & a CHAMPION in the hearts & minds of my people. Millions will follow your foot-steps for generation to come. BLESSED GRATEFUL NATION, ERITREA, HONORS YOU FOR ETERNITY!!!
I'll agree that theres a big change in pace between 10k and half, but you gotta admit that tadese's running style makes it look like he's really working hard. more so than other runners, even though they all are probably just as much in pain.
@MySonOfSam Don't stress about it, ideal cadence varies greatly from runner to runner. Some people like Tadese here have a very high cadence of 210, whereas other great runners like Lawi Lalang have a lower cadence of less than 180. Cadence is really only an issue if your cadence is extremely low and your "jumping"/"hopping" between strides.
Yea, I would definitely agree. Obviously it's a very efficient stride for him (and clearly successful) but it's very quick and looks a little jerky, especially with his "busy" upper body. On a different note, I'm not sure I would call any of the above "flaws". It may not be a "classic" graceful stride like a Seb Coe or Bernard Lagat but it's pretty hard to argue with a 58:23.
agreed the 27: 43 opening 10k stands by itself ------the guy commenting on this as a stand alone world class 10K time tho? ----needs to become aware of Kenesia Bekele's 26: 17-------not to mention his 12: 37 5K which is only a couple seconds short of 3 back to back 4:00 miles ! {oh well Sir Roger !!!}----Daniel Komen ran sub -8:00 twice in the 2 mile{ 7:58 & 7: 55 @1600} and also a 12: 39 5K & the greatest distance mark on the books for over 20 years now -----his 7:20 3K ----no one has come remotely close except himself indoors at 7: 24!!!!!------so all these runners mentioned are in a super rarified place orders of magnitude beyond even " normal " world class runners----who by comparision are rather pedestrain. ...... back to training.........
+Ted Allison Yes, 27:43 is a world-class 10K time by any standard. That's faster than the world 10k record until 1965,. In the past 4 years only 9 Americans ran faster.
@huyiy His cadence is "unusually super high". Between 1:20 and 1:40, I counted 35 strides, which would equate to 105 strides per minute. He keeps roughly the same pace throughout this video and seemingly the entire race. As I'm sure you know, 90 strides a minute is an average among professionals.
All that, but the power he has for each step is staggering.. on top of that, his cadence is up to like ~200steps/minute.. insane! He just doesn't spend that much time on the ground with each step, and that's what really matters
Wow today marks 7 years since he broke the record! Must of been to caught up in running LA Marathon that day that I didn't realize the world half record had been broken!
I had a feeling that he was going to break the record. The half marathon is a great distance for him since it's obvious that he doesn't have enough foot speed for the 10k. Now my 3 favorite runners are all record holders.
+Jer Mitch Well lets see how bad football and hockey players suck at distance running. I can guarantee that they would be dead running half a mile at this pace
@hermonnw1 It takes an athlete with SPEED, talent, will power & determination to beat the competition. Therefore, if you have one, join the competition. If you ain't got none, give credit to those who proved to the world they are special breed & can beat the odds. TELL ME IT AIN'T SO???? CONGRATULATIONS TADESSE, YOU PROVED WHAT IT TAKES TO BE WORLD CLASS ATHLETE!!!
@467076 If you pause at 6:40 you can clearly see they're some kind of flats, although I'm unsure of the model...they kinda looks like the Nike Streak XC 2's but they don't make them in that color
Look at him breaking this world record from Samuel Wanjiru 58'33". I hope he will run the London Olympic marathon. Because at 10000 there will be Bekele who stays behind him all the time like in Berlin (Tadese paced like a dozen of laps). Like Mo Farah bekele has a very fast final lap. So for Tadese it could be only bronze. But this record would not been set when he didn't run against Bekele alll the time. No pain no gain!!!!!
Ran one of these in 1:36 a few weeks ago. The best part was that a guy running it in 1:09 lapped me about 12 times so I could watch his form close up over and over.
@dazeeman It's just unbelievable. From 10k to 20k he does 27:25, which is faster than his first 10k, and just over 1 minute slower than the world record on 10000m, hahaha insaaane
Yea it's a little silly when people say distance runners are "sprinting" these races...but I can't understand why that would make you mad. If it looks to them like your running fast enough to be sprinting...well obviously they think your running pretty damn fast.
@BahreNeGash Do you mean this how you ask "zersenay my friend yak"? Have you EVER considered the motivation for being athlet, besides "how much money did he win anyway's cinquenta mil euros is that how much they won? But, what made you think "Zersenay" is RUNNING for money? HOW ABOUT ZERESENAY IS JUST ENJOYING THE SPORT, MAKING SOMETHING WORTHY IN HIS LIFE? How about Zeresany making name for himself & his people ALL OVER THE WORLD, proving GLORY & PRESTIGE of being a winner?
o.O Go watch like Usain Bolt 100m video a couple times and then watch this, or go watch like the 5000m or 10000m world record videos afterwords. The difference is very dramatic and noticable. Yea, the pace they are running is really, really fast but still no where near a sprint.
