The Zeus 2000 - a Spanish made 1970`s super bike - Zeus`s mission was to build a better frame than Colnago and a better groupset that Campagnolo.
To be fair, thats one tall order and Zeus tackled it head on, the Zeus factory in Spain manufactured almost all the components in house, from the forged dropouts, frame and forks down to every groupset component down to the bolts!
Our example is a down-at-heel late `70`s Zeus 2000 thats complete but suffered with surface rust, neglect and our old friend the 1980`s re-build. In this video we check out the vintage Zeus 2000, check the frame and parts, then strip down, bare-metal the frame before tackling the paint and decals.

i remember my brother had some Zeus derailleurs back in the 70s. This was before was could afford afford Campagnolo parts. They were hard to get in Canada in the 70s, but i rather liked them.

When I repaint bicycle frames I have the steel frame bead blasted rather than using a chemical stripper. The metal finish is perfect for primer and paint with no chemical residue

Velosport in Norwich used to have one of these hanging on the wall back in the early 80s. Never seen one since...

Another great video Dan ! This one really brings me back to the 70’s . I remember all the Zeus components out at that time ,how Campagnolo never did anything about it is puzzle to me. Will be looking forward to your next video as always. All the best!

Yep, there`s a lot of rumours on the net regarding the relationship between Campagnolo and Zeus but who knows why they didn`t end up in court, Dan

Looking forward to the build up Dan, i must say iv started drilling my own cranks lately they look so cool 👍👍

Drilled cranks done well look super cool - when you look closely at the drill work on the Zeus cranks and deraillieur its a bit wonky so with a bit of care I think a good job can be done at home, Dan

yes i agree the secret is mark out first then use a punch then just take it easy drilling, i also slightly countersink mine to give an extra facet to catch the light@@vintagevelos9517

now that you mention it, you are the Colin Chapman of bicycles. Is there a Navy Cut Players bicycle?

What tubing is the frame made from? Reynold's 531 or Columbus? I have an old Raleigh International frame that needs refiinishing. Do you suggest painting the fork to match or replating the chrome? It half chrome now.
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 6 месяцев назад
The frame is Reynolds 531 - how bads the chrome on the fork? Did you check out the video we did on chrome fork restoration? Half chrome would be easier to sort then clear coat over when you paint the rest, Dan

@@vintagevelos9517 It is flaking in spots with exposed metal and surface rust.

Do you think that the older, heavier steel frame bikes would benefit from a cpmpact chainset?

I prefer a 52/42 up front on most of my bikes - maybe 53 for the superfast rigs - I find if I ride a 50 or 48 I just go slower and sin out to soon, Dan

What frame material is that? Is it Reynolds or Columbus?

I know I totally nerd out on things like this , but yes what steel , quick tape measure would add to the video (looks too small for Dan) , what does bare frame weigh , what size block will the rear mech go up to. So many questions. Not sure about the black and gold theme ( unless you have a matching cotton cycling kit already ). Have a great new year Dan.

Frame is Reynolds 531, Dan
@vintagevelos9517
@vintagevelos9517 8 месяцев назад
Yep, I always overlook some of the detail - will get the tape out when I build it up - and your correct, its a small frame, I`ll be able to ride it (its the same size as the Colnago Super we rode last year) but it will be a tight fit - weight wise I like to weigh in when fully built, Dan@@nickdowdell2441

Had one of these in the day. It was a seriously light frame for the time.. I assumed it to have been SLX or an early iteration thereof. Thanks for correction. It wasn't that strong and didn't withstand a crash i had. Lamented the loss of it due to it's weight- it was that light.!. The componentry was interesting but not fabulous as well as hard to replace.
