Gary your work is astounding and watching your repairs I have rebuild 2007 528xi. I have a 2001 A4 1.8t that when hot reverse is useless. I hope this repair will help me fix mine.

Check the F clutch piston too, they tend to Debond

great job, I've been watching lots of your videos lately and really appreciate your making them!I guess that's why service on the trans is so important, those bushings can get eaten up.

What we do at the shop when we service them is drop the pan, change the filter, pan gasket and refill with new fluid, not all of the fluid is changed. I do not have a machine that transfers all the fluid out and all new fluid in

I have a 2001 BMW 325 CI. I have no reverse but it drives fine. Is it the reverse drum, and if so, can I drive it till I can afford replacement? Thanks Gary.

I rebuilt the transmission and drove it around yesterday and today. My sun gear bushing was very worn and I replaced it and air checked it. I followed the procedure and it was working great in all forward gears, reverse worked fine. I just drove all around the freeway and got the transmission nice and hot (checking with my scanner) and noticed now the reverse initially will slip but finds the gear pretty quickly. After the first slip, I can stay in reverse and it won’t slip anymore. It’s only when shifting into reverse from another gear or park. I replaced all the clutches and the F piston too. It won’t slip until I give it throttle after shifting into reverse, but of course I’m not giving it throttle immediately after shifting if that makes sense. Will clearing the adaptations help with this? My worry is that I tapped the top brass bushing too far down into the sun gear, although it isn’t blocking the hole. I was moving it around after warming it up with no issues until today.

Would it be possible to change in to some thicker ATF-fluid? Any recommendations? My Audi S8 zf5hp24 works ok when not really hot. When it gets hot, it sort of jerks for few meters every time that I switch to reverse. Does this problem have to do anything with the valve bodys main pressure regulator?

Hello, Gary I bought bmw E38 730d last week with the ZF5HP24, my first automatic transmission car so I have not very good idea what to expect. There is one error code that 49 symtom gear check. The only problem i noticed is sometimes shifting from 2nd to 3rd is with a bang but not always and sometimes it goes in reverse a bit rough. I ordered new filter from germany and will do the oil as first step. it is 150 miles transmission. I've watched all the ZF5HP24 videos in your channel, but I'm not sure if the transmission should undergo full overhaul as it is quite expensive and maybe a bit overkill for the issues I noticed. The shops that specialise in auto transmission in my country are very unreliable so most probably I will have to do it by myself, whats your toughts on how I should proceed with the problem. Any checks that I can do when changing the oil?

I would make sure the oil is full. clear the code and see how it drives, if a code is present it may raise line pressure. I would do the service with new filter and top off with new fluid

Thank you, this was a good one, out of all the 5HP24's i built, this is the only one that had this issue, took about a day or so of testing to find the problem.

Hi Gary, I have passat with 5hp 19 transmission, the car was flooded, and the TCU was dead, the car worked in limp mode, he used it like that for a while forward 3d gear an reverse working fine, after I bought it from him I found the dead TCU, there was a lot of corrosion on the plug also, I cleaned it and after that the car works normally forward, changes gears smoothly but the reverse only works when the engine is idling, as soon as I touch the acceleration it seems to disengage and acts as neutral, if I release the acceleration it goes in reverse, other simtoms, when cold in reverse there is only a bump even at idle and car stops, move from N to R and moves a little and disangages, when hot reverse works at idle, it even goes uphill, other than that, if I remove the TCU reverse seems to work fine, I can accelerate even when cold. Hope you read this.

Do you have any codes present for the trans? seems like reverse is slipping, when you unplug the connector your at max line pressure so if there is a leak high line pressure may make up for that, may have a problem in the D clutch

@@GaryFerraro no, there is no error code for transmission, I will open the oil pan in the next days, it there aluminium debris inside I'll know for sure, I will try to fix it myself, thanks for answering

@@GaryFerraro I'm not sure the working principle without the TCU and I was thinking it might be an electrical issue with the TCU plug(I cleaned it as good as I could) is it's still working in reverse if I unplug it, but after your explanation it makes sense

Oh, I see, so the clutch is slipping, the drum might be intact, also to mention that the car is from 2002, has 270k km, that would be ~160k miles and I don't think the transmission oil has been changed, if that is the case maybe new oil will fix the issue, but might cause others from what I read on other forums

Thank you very much for all your videos, is there any way that you can tell me what is the reading in between the terminals of the output speed sensor of the transmission ZF 5hp 19. If i am correct is 292 - 358 ohms right? I will appreciate if you respond. I know you're awesome!

Hi Gary, I'm about to try out a 5HP24 rebuild - I have two of them with no reverse. I know you said with this transmission you got the replacement bushings from Eriksson - did they let you buy just the bushings from ZF? You also mentioned the Omega kit which I was going to buy, until I researched it and it seems one person posting on various forums had issues with the Omega bushings being way out of spec and causing the same no reverse issue. Do you have any more experience after this video with using the Omega kit? Hoping to hear that someone has used it with good results.

Erikson makes there own bushings, if you can buy them i'm not sure, i just purchased the part with the bushings installed

I have same problem with my e38 5hp24 gearbox, now 2-3 years.. when gearbox cold - working perfectly, but when hot, reverese gear sometimes not working, i need one more time do P then R.. still nothing? then one more time P then R and after 2-3s.. with schock reverse working.. but i thinkink maybe problem with reverse gear solenoid(VALVE BODY)? or not..? whant you thinking? when problem not with solenoid.. then better i need to search another gearbox, i think..

Solenoids very rarely go bad on this unit, you either have the bonding coming off the F clutch piston or worn bushings on the C drum, ive really never seen much more than that

Now in Germany, but im from Lithuania.. problem that 3-4 years back - im already did gearbox rebuild, but after one year when warranty ended - did this problem with reverse.. i dont wanna pay one more time ~1000e for rebuild, better another gearbox + new filter and oil..

2-1 downshift may be a valvebody issue or possible clutch clearance problem. the hard shift in reverse when cold, engine rpm high when this happens?

Not to bad, only thing i can think of is maybe a sticky or lazy valve when cold, this is not a common problem, do not really see this, when hot no problem?@@azamc2952

@@DarkMental16 well if it only happens hot very possible the bushings may be worn out that feed the C clutch drum. Also, the common problem is with the bonding coming off the piston on the F drum. I has one with a problem only when hot and it was the worn bushing on the C drum

Hi, I have similar problem on my 2001 Audi S8. I took the transmission out from the car opened it, changed all the o-rings, friction plates and the bushings in solar wheel (or what ever you call it). Bushings were new and in factory spec. When you did this rebuild in the video, did someone manufacture the bushings to fit just this axel/solar wheel? Because in my case the rebuild did not help... Do you have any suggestions what could be wrong, the reverse sort of jerks in when hot and looses grip almost instantly. The car also crawls forward more heavily that you could suspect and you have to push the brake quit hard. For my eye everything seems to be ok mechanically in valve body and in transmission - but I am novice on this...

The old one was ok, I changed it to new one nevetheless. Everything seemed to be like new inside the transmission, someone must have done rebuild before me propably with the same result. Car has done almost 200 000miles. Could this be some kind of a general problem with the main pressure on valve table? Is there anyway to test it?

@@petrikaikkonen5786 ok, so new F clutch piston < is it an OE Piston? New bushiongs on the Hollow shaft that feeds the C clutch correct? and still reverse issue when hot? Did you happen to air check the C clutch? Where did the bushings come from?

Don't know about the f-piston manufacturer, but the old was ok and new was ok and worked well with pressure test. C-clutch worked also ok, but it leaked a bit like it did in your video - really hard to say did it leak a lot or not but some. The outer bushing in solar wheel was 32mm and manufactured by omega machine. I read from zf repair manual that 31.99mm would be ok for that bushing. I dont remember any other measurements. If its about that leak then i might have to manufacture 32.8 or something size bushing, it is just so hell of a job to take the tranny out and dismantle it again... I was wondering, should the valve table give constant oil flow for the c-clutch, or just an pulse that activates it? It just feels like the reverse engages ok, but then drops out. I was hoping that someone could re-program the tcm in a way that it would give constant oil flow for c-clutch to keep it working...

Hello , I just rebuilt my 5HP 24 out of 05 Rover. Im experiencing no reverse but have reverse when in failsafe. the transmission shifts good thru all gears but doesn't feel smooth it seems as if I'm in low range but I'm actually in High range. sometimes I get P0775 pressure control solenoid C code. Is there any way to check for leaks with transmission still in vehicle. My f clutch piston is new and I'm still running to high fluid temps

Did you have reverse before the overhaul? You have all the bolts installed that hold the F drum in place? Do you have the large o-ring around the F drum?

Gary Ferraro yes reverse was smooth and the old piston was in good shape! Also the orings were installed on the F clutch along with all of the bolts.

Really can't check pressures in this unit, but you can air check, Along with the F drum, the C clutch drum is on in reverse, you may want to drop out the valve body and air check the drums, see if you hear any leaks. Also in the manual valve is not adjusted correctly it can cause no reverse(i dont really see this much) but if you move the shifter from reverse closer to park position or toward the neutral and drive position does reverse engage?

Gary Ferraro reverse does engage but it rolls back a few feet then stops like a brake and engine revs with no more movement!
