I wish i saw your videos earlier man! Thanks for being a nice guy on youtube :) I was wondering if replacing the chip the correct way (your way) does provide for a durable solution? Or will the bad design of the motherboard eventually make the macbook fail again? Currently im on the fence of either selling my faulty 2011 pro and buying sth new (second hand) or having a replacement of the chip for about 250 euros. Im low on budget... Grts from Berlin

Go back to 22.00, 23.07, 46.28 and 49.20 .Watch how Louis potentially sets himself up by placing the coil of solder in a way that guarantees it will fall at some point. But switching off the machine? That's not right.

Easy solution for aluminum tape adhesive, naphtha. Aka, Old-school Zippo lighter fluid. Grab a bottle form any local gas station/mini-mart. It will remove just about any petroleum product and doesn't leave a stain or residue. It evaporates quickly, but not too quickly. Good stuff.

Louis, here's a great tip that might change your life. Get to know your dentist's toolbox. Micro applicators are q-tip or toothbrush like disposable cleaning tools that do not shed by design. It's been great for me in PC repair where contamination was a bad idea and cleaning or application was needed. There are hundreds of shapes lengths and firmness of bristle. You might also like tweezer scissors. Strong enough to cut thick "human mouth", braces wiring and holds while cutting in small delicate spaces. Lots of sizes as well.

I'll be talking to my dentist about giving me some of these to try. Thanks for the tip!

For those wondering (and I know there's plenty of them, most have at some point) why not just solder, wick, rework with the solder already on there with electronics. Electronics manufacturing use lead-free solder. Leaded solder is an environmental and personal-health nastiness. So industry has to use it. Lead-free solder work great in manufacturing applications, with the right solder bath setups etc. But, it's utter crap for reflowing, wicking and reworking (manually), once it has solidified. So when doing manual repair/reflow work, you gotta replace it with leaded solder, which is much more manual-work/-reflow friendly. As you can't just wish it all away, you do that by adding generous amounts of leaded solder to the lead-free one, wick away when enough to be decently wickable, add more, "rinse and repeat" if neccessary - progressively boosting the lead/leaded solder content of the solder "mix". Until the mix there is satisfactory, all leaded solder, or the component/pads/whatever are tinned but clean. Whatever your goal is. _Then,_ you can proceed working with it with good flow. This is why a fume extractor is important. Those fumes from the solder, especially the leaded one, is quite bad for you.

I admire your patience. I heard someone say recently "perfection is the enemy of good" or something like that. A job like this looks like a prime example; knowing when you've done enough and that it's time to stop is half the battle. Great instructive video as always.

I learned to just leave things be a long time ago when I was an apprentice. I was told to chip the concrete away around a clay drainage pipe while the experienced plumber I was working with went to get the connectors to go onto the clay. "Be careful not to crack the pipe" I was told. After doing a perfect job of it and then waiting quite a while for him to get back I decided I'd just take a tiny bit more out, just to make it even more perfect. Crack! Right down the length of the clay pipe.

Replace that cheap irons cable and it will heat up in 10-20sec. I personal was quite pissed when i found out this fact. They use Coperclad aluminim iin the cable that goes to the iron after you replace it with a good cable it works great and you don't have a shitty cable that folds up and does frustrating things. MOnoprice 24awg usb cords make great replacements:) the "data wires" aka small go to the thermal couple and the 2 "thick" ones go to the heater.

New subscriber here. I've been learning a lot. Thanks so much and looking forward to more. - - - You mentioned that the adhesive on the Nashua tape is almost impossible to get off if you get it on your hands. Just FYI, I've never met an adhesive that won't come off almost any surface in 2 seconds using Zippo lighter fluid. Of course it's totally unsafe so be smart about it, but if you need to remove stubborn adhesive from a material that can handle it (e.g. glass), nothing works better and of course you can get it at just about any store that sells cigarettes.

It's amazing how slow these things are with those mechanical drives, I swapped out a 250gb Toshiba from a 2009 13" Macbook pro to an SSD and it feels like a whole new laptop.

Concerning the MEK cleaning on the pads: Ive got good experience using medical non-sterile bandages. Very cheap and woven in a way that no fiber leaves the material when abused as a swipe. Just cut some cm of material, fold the cut ends inside and use as a cleaning tip either on tweezers or a needle holder if available. Everytime repeatable, clean results for me.

No matter how much you think you know, one can always learn......great tips. I’m sure seasoned techs probably watch as intently as someone like me who knows squat about working on computers.

Infra-red rework stations like Ersa IR450, IR500 or most recent IR650 have advantage of perfectly aiming IR beamer just on the chip using apertures while not blowing other stuff around off (like small 0402 capacitors), which is what hot-air stations usualy do :). It also has semi-automated pull-of with suction and when the solder melts, it pulls the chip away quickly.. And btw those hoses sucking messy fumes at around 25min are heavily affecting the temperature profile.. which should be measured with some thermocouples. One placed on the bottom, one next to the chip and one directly on the chip.

the biggest challenge amongst all of this is finding chips that aren't bullshit

Hi Louis, I'm a computer enthusiast and a IT worker and I've been following your channel for a while. Love your work and Im pretty interested in it. I have a non working laptop (powers on, fan spins, but no image in the screen or via hdmi) and I want to repair it in order to learn and possibly include this service for my customers in the future here in Spain. The thing is the videos are quite long and you don't spend much time explaining techniques, so, if you admit suggestions, I think a series of short tutorials explaining techniques as microsoldering, desoldering, diagnosing problems, following schematics, sources or software for them and such could be a great value in your channel for those who want to enter in this world.

The silver Nashua tape is actually just duct tape. Used in air conditioning repair to seal joints in ductwork and other types of air gaps. The tape is also pressure applied. Meaning you use a squeegee, or a credit card, or something that you can apply pressure to adhere it. i know this from the days I worked as an HVAC repair man. Universal HVAC certified except I now refuse to climb in an attic to mess with an evaporator, since I live in Florida. I remember looking down at my temp sensor and seeing 160° F readings on a daily basis, in the summer. Dont become an HVAC tech kids. Worst job ever. Even I could only stand a couple of years in my younger days. BTW I enjoy your vids Louis. I learn something in every vid brother. Outstanding.

i use gravity to get most solder of the circuit board after removing the component, afterwards i use a hot weller vacuum cleaner, i also use glasses 1.5 or 2 it enlarge a bit, i can also recommend the camera in a phone. That with the camera is ok, I would probably try a heat camera too but then you probably can't see when the soldering goes together

The metal tape is used to patch air leaks in duct work on HVAC and is heat activated and fire proof. That’s why so goopy!

Louis, your videos have me laughing more than at some professional comedians.
