I just invested in the new Zildjian L80 and silent stroke mesh heads from Remo. Here is a review.
+ price
+ look
+ feels close to real heads and cymbals
+ definitely quieter than normal kit
- cymbals are still loud (up to 100db)
- loses texture on the heads
- heads can be too bouncy
- not that quiet overall, and a lot of vibration
So far i am happy with them.
**** GEAR ****
- Tama Metro Jam 16" bass, 10" & 13" toms + 12" snare (custom) with mesh heads Remo Silent stroke
- Zildjian L80 13" HH 14" Crash 18" Ride
- recorded with one mic Studioprojects B1 placed over my right shoulder, no EQ or audio editing
Drum riser:
- MDF 18mm thick about 0.90m x 1.50m (do bigger if you can)
- two 26" mountain bike innertubes
- gym foam mattress type to cover the surface
- carpet

hello - just a follow up, after i got some comments, i am now using some gaffer tape on each head (outside the impact zone), this makes the drum sound a tiny bit louder and therefore closer to the volume of the cymbals. Also that fixes the problem of the snare, the sound is now more even regardless of where i hit it. On the bass drum i put a few pieces of gaffer as well, including where the felt of the batter hits, this gives a better sound and a more realistic feeling (less bouncy). lastly i added a tiny bit of moongel on the bell of the ride cymbal (side i dont reach), this takes some of the sustain away and therefore the sound is a bit clearer/dryer, it also possibly reduces the sound by a few db but barely noticeable.

+pierre g You taped near the edges and this makes it louder? Are you not scared these heads will damage your bearing edges?
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
+Mr.Viking hello, yes, i put a gaffer tape of about 4 inches / 10cm long on the side where my stick never hits the snare - this definitely makes it a bit louder, i guess it just moves more air towards the drum which is why. I never thought about damaging the bearing edge, but i doubt it's doing much.

I have the L80's and the heads. I found if you put a small piece of gaffer tape on the snare head it gives it more snap and volume. Also I tried using a real bottom hihat with the L80 hat on top and it sounded really good and not too loud either.
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
+Brian Davidson hello! thanks for your comment, i put a big piece of gaffer tape on the snare (towards the left where my stick doesnt hit the head) it works really well! you are right a bit louder (so closer to the cymbal volume) and also more consistent. great tip!
@bigangryskygames5281
@bigangryskygames5281 8 лет назад
+pierre g Glad it worked for you! I also found that if you put the piece of gaffer tape over the area you hit that it reduces the rebound back to more like a real snare head. I find the Silent Stroke's just a little too bouncy.
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
+Brian Davidson yes i agree - i also wanted to experiment with having the gaffer tape on the other side of the mesh (so inside the snare), but that require to remove the head first etc...

I've been playing with this set up for about a week and I find if you use a pair of vic firth soft touch sticks it brings the volume of the cymbals down enough to match the drums. You lose a little bit of definition though.

If you loosen a lot or take off your resonant heads completely your toms will be even more quiet and if you turn off your snare wires as well your snare will be almost nothing.

+emmittsmith482 thanks for your comment - actually i would rather the toms are louder, because the cymbals are currently much louder than the rest. for my snare which is 12x3,5, i do get a fair amount of sound even without the wires on.

HI! I' curious of what can be this setting with close regular drum micing. And, maybe more, i'm curious about that 12 inch snare! How deep is it? How much you paid for it? Anyway good demo here!
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
Hi! You mean using real mics? The sound is fairly poor to be honest. What I've just done now is to add some electronic triggers to the toms and snare (well I had another proper electronic snare) and the result is great - the cymbals cut through the headphones and the feel is good - and I can balance the level of the drums. The snare on the video was custom made in an old pearl tom - that was done 20 years ago by a shop in Paris. It's just over 3 inch deep - I used it for years as my main snare which was stupid as it was very quiet

The cymbals and drumheads work nice ,,but they is alot of stick noise" Maybe some rubber tips for the sticks would help quiet the stick noise some ?

true, any rubber tip you recommend? i had the tama ones to put on the tips of any sticks a long long time ago, it changed the weight of the sticks and made no sense to use.. but i guess there are probably better options now

hey man, where do you live? i dont have time to make a video but here is how to do it, it's SUPER simple: - go to your diy shop, and ask to cut some wood plank of MDF 18mm thick and to the size of your drumkit, mine is 90cm x 150cm but i have a small kit and i wish it was a bit bigger = 15 euros - go to your local bike shop or something like Decathlon if it exists in your country and buy 2 big fat innertube, i got a lot of 26" mountain bike tubes for 3 euros at Decathlon, take the cheapest ones - either buy some foam mats tiles from amazon tinyurl.com/jjtc8sw (20 euros to cover the surface) - find a cheap rug to make it look nicer (not necessary) --> no DIY required, just put the two innertubes on the floor, put the MDF plank of wood on top of it, put your foam tiles on it then put your drumkit and you are good to go. --> DO NOT put your throne on the platform, you are too heavy and it will make it sink, so drum throne on the floor, see the end of the video. Good luck!

triggers
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 7 лет назад
hello, thanks for your comment - are you talking about the cymbals or the drum shells? if the drumshells i would say to put some real heads on it as it's technically and acoustic kit, otherwise you can use mics - i've done it and it's great (you have the sound of the meshhead but louder). triggers as mentioned below is an option but you would need a drum module, you can check my other video to see how it sounds converted to electronic.

HI great review.. do you think that Zildjian L80 Series is less noisy than Alesis surge cymbals? thx
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
+LPeacecz hello thanks - i havent tried the surge, but from what i know it probably is a bit louder, although with less sustain (plus it doesnt sound like a cymbal). i think the L80 do a good job
@LPeacecz
@LPeacecz 8 лет назад
+pierre g thx answer. I know that surge C. is not like regular cymbals its trigger.. midi.. i want that feel of real cymbals and make it midi.. it is easy to do but i am wondering if this L80 is more or less loud. is it possible if i send you sample of playing on my surge cymbals and tell you how far is microphone and i record some specific sound like for example drumstick on drumstick than you send mi exact same record of L80 and i will match the volume of that clicks in programe and i will see with one is louder sry f. m. english.

@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
hey man, sorry i havent replied and actually not sure what you mean - but you could try to do some DIY piezzo trigger on a L80 cymbal, i was tempted to do so, i see no reason why it wouldnt work!

Are these loud enough to gig with on the street and coffee shops? Also are they quiet enough for night time playing without disturbing others?
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
on the street/coffee shop i would say "no" - the cymbals are louder than the drums, that said, if you were to add some gaffer tape on the mesh heads (like covering 20% of the head) it would probably make it louder. Also, the crash is very quiet in comparison to the ride and HH. If you can plug your stuff somewhere i would recommend a hybrid electronic like i did in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DLvW_cBdIUM.html - that way you could be at the volume level desired.
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
oh and regarding playing at night, it depends on your neighbours/people living in your flat. 1) the cymbals are still quite loud (especially if it's completely quiet around), 2) there are some vibrations going from hitting, so i would recommend to build a small platform like i did.
@johnnybgoode2333
@johnnybgoode2333 3 года назад
Instead of wasting money on silent strokes, just cover your drum heads with Tshirts. Use hot rod stick bundles to be even quieter. Use a foam kick drum beater or modify your own. You could remove your reso heads as well to be even quieter.

@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 4 года назад
hey, i bought a very cheap racket ball (from the beach racket) for about 1 euros (from Decathlon if you live in Europe), and i did 2 wholes in it and stuck it to instead of the normal beater. What is does is smoother attack, which is quieter and for some reason have a very nice rebound (which i wouldnt have expected, as the ball itself is quite bouncy) www.decathlon.de/p/beachtennis-set-woody/_/R-p-3598?mc=8373039&c=BLAU

how tight can we go with the silent stroke heads?
@pierreg8562
@pierreg8562 8 лет назад
+aurelio agosto you mean how tight vs loose? i play then rather loose actually so they don't have an anoying rebound. I believe it will depends on the size of the drums, somewhere around 12 or 13" are the best, the feel is quite good. But in the end they are just normal mesh heads, you can check out other options, apparently the "real feel" from drumtec are much better, though also 2.5 times more expensive. I would say for the snare it's better to invest in a more realistic head, for the toms these do just fine. I ended up changing my set up, now using an electronic snare and i put trigger on the toms/bass drum, that's perfect.

So this low volume solution seemed perfect. I've watched a lot of videos but still not really sure how do they sound live. Have you tried one? I guess you wouldn't change your edrum for this...
