The ZiG -- short for Zimbabwe Gold -- officially started trading on Monday, just days after it was announced it would replace the Zimbabwean dollar, which has tumbled in value over the past year, pushing inflation through the roof. Zimbabwean authorities are cracking down on illegal foreign currency trading, with dozens having been arrested since Friday, as FRANCE 24's Nyasha Chingono reports.

I am Zimbabwean, this is good journalism 👏👏that zig can't buy fual and pay at the passport officies even the governor has distanced himself from this zig rubbish but it was his idea in the first place. Keep it up France 24

So you think the only way forward is to keep using the usd. This is a game of the population having confidence in their currency, it starts with you. Why do you think the sanctions were so effective.

@@upper-Machine-276 the sanctions were not effective zanu used them as an excuse to steal from the nation and leave it empty, I don't trust zanu Mugabe left 6 billion dollars in the reserve bank right now there's nothing, Biti ran fiance and covered about 17 billion of debt leaving the country with only 200 million to pay right now we are at 18 billion in debt. Let not talk about the gold we both know where that is going, ask yourself why zanu doesn't want zig anywhere near their businesses and you will understand
