How helpful & what a great, patient teacher you are! Besides your main topic, other tips were a bonus - lay zinc near joint, lay zinc on table to not kink, horse nails AND holding them at an angle to avoid hitting/breaking glass, using drywall (super tip!) & turning IT around, and using swivel fishing lures. Thank you so much for sharing your practical & technical skills (& using yellow, large font to read). I’m a 4/10 stain “glasser” so I need all the tips I can get.

Thank you so much for this amazing video so helpful, I have a little question if you don't mind, why did you copper foil the edges before you put your zinc profile? Thank you 👍😊
@GommStainedGlass
@GommStainedGlass 5 месяцев назад
It's easier to foil the entire piece of glass rather than trying to save the tiny amount that falls on the outside edge and it adds just a little more to solder to as we attach the zinc.

I just picked up my stained glass after almost 30 years and my first piece was round. 🙄 What was I thinking! I have been playing around with different ways to wrap it, so this video was perfect for me. Thank you! I know this is an older video and I don't expect a response but...I opened the footlocker of supplies and tools to find it pretty complete though I'm wondering if the Flux, patinas, etc. are still usable? Lots of old chemicals. 🧐😬🌈
@GommStainedGlass
@GommStainedGlass 3 года назад
Most chemicals last a long time, you may want to test them out. Remember that getting your project as clean as possible (which is why we use both CJ's and Kwik Clean) is important to get patina (esp. copper) to work. 😀😀😀

Just curious, wouldn't it be easier to measure the circle with string and then add 1 or 2"? Then you wouldn't have to worry about 6' of zinc getting kinks. I love the idea of using fish spinners for the feathers! Big fan from Washington State 😃 🌲🌲🌲

Looking through the responses you answered one of my questions (does this work with different metals), but I wondered if you feel like there is a minimum diameter that you can bend around? I just had problems with bending copper around a 10 in diameter piece - would that work with zinc? I second (third?) the thanks for the drywall hint! I've always wanted something to do with the scrap drywall I end up with.
@GommStainedGlass
@GommStainedGlass 2 года назад
Copper is a more rigid metal than zinc when in a 1/8" u channel so you may be able to bend it around a ten inch diameter piece, I've been able to successfully in the past. Sometimes it feels like it's luck or practice that gets me there! 🙂

Thank you .Very well explained.But why zinc and not steel ?
@GommStainedGlass
@GommStainedGlass 2 года назад
Zinc is easily soldered, steel is not. This is why zinc and copper are the traditional metals used to reinforce stained glass!!!

@@GommStainedGlass Thank you for replying.Maybe I meant copper rather than steel.That is why use zinc over copper.Here in Israel I can only get copper 😐
@GommStainedGlass
@GommStainedGlass 2 года назад
@@valeriegindin3852 Copper is a little more brittle than zinc but it takes a patina very well and solders like a dream. So you'll have to be careful as you bend copper to avoid kinking it but it will give you a strong border.

How do I choose a size of zinc came?
@GommStainedGlass
@GommStainedGlass 2 года назад
It needs to be as wide as your glass and 1/8" is the width of most stained glass. Then if you are going to bend it you'll want it to be narrow, If it's going on a square or rectangle piece you'll want it to be outer bar which gives it strength.

@GommStainedGlass

Great suggestion!..In the video, I was soldering the swivels to the back of the panel. There is probably a way to solder the swivel to the bottom of the zinc, but I was going for the most secure soldered joint, that's why I did it in the way I demonstrated.

I have a 24" round piece, appears old. Has loosened border and 1 piece of missing curves glass. I want to take off the border and redo it. This piece is extremely heavy and I believe that is why it slipped apart. What Zinc should I use, in your opinion, to put on it for a new strong border?? Thanks a lot Janey Boyd
@GommStainedGlass
@GommStainedGlass 3 года назад
If it's heavy, it might have been lead that they went around it with. This would make it heavier and lead can stretch over time giving the piece that looseness you describe. I would use 1/4" outer bar for the new outer rim. Make sure to follow our instructions on the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pAMhLAHfrSc.html
