MuggyWeld.com customer Mark Stevenson purchased the Super Alloy 1 low-temperature solder to repair a Zinc Crucifix Statue. Unfortunately, the crucifix was heavily damaged, as you see in the video.
Super Alloy 1 repairs zinc statues of all sizes and thicknesses. Yes, the simple-to-use solder bonds to copper, brass, bronze, steel, etc. But it also works on various white metals, including spelter, Zamak, pewter, lead, extruded aluminum, pot metal, zinc die-cast, monkey metal, and more. This innovative alloy has a working temperature of 350°F that's less than half the 787.2°F melting point of the zinc.
The liquid honey flux paired with the Super Alloy rod helps the alloy adhere to the parent metal; the flux also acts as a temperature guide warning the worker when the zinc is approaching the maximum bonding temperature of the solder rod. When the flux turns brown, it's time to apply the solder. The Super Alloy 1 will also solder to galvanized steel and other zinc-plated metals. The Alloy 1 is also popular among antique spelter clock enthusiasts.
The Super Alloy 1 comes in 3/32" and 1/8" diameters. The 1/8" fills and builds better on large statues due to the thickness. Oxyacetylene is not necessary when using Super Alloy 1. A propane torch is more than enough heat. If you only have oxyacetylene, turn the oxygen down and use a carburizing flame. When working on a section with more design and could use a thinner rod, simply thin the solder by flattening it with a hammer.
When working with Super Alloy 1 on large white metal projects, you may need to use an old butter knife, flat head screwdriver, or a stainless steel spatula, as Mark and the guys are here to shape and contour. They poured some flux on a plate, used the spatula to grab the flux, then heated the back of the spatula while shaping.
As you will see throughout this video, the crucifix suffered extensive damage to its arms, feet, wrists, and fingers. Luckily, mark found the right tool to restore this work of art.
The Super Alloy 1 is easy to apply and finishes nicely. The solder can take powder coating, copper plating, chrome plating, paint, etc.
MuggyWeld would like to thank Mark Stevenson for sending in his photo testimonial.
