Tex, she had such monumental fame so young. Wish she had a good, strong loving, very smart, older hand in show business. It might be have kept her from harm.
The pure innocence is so evident in her eyes & on her face! What a shame that she could never enjoy the early stages of her life! Like Marilyn, they lost their bearings facing endless deceptions until they quit life so early!
I was a young boy of six or seven when she captured my heart. I'm 69 now. In my life, I've never seen anyone who displayed such natural beauty, talent and passion and who, despite suffering horrendous cruelty, maintained a loving, caring and compassionate heart. She is in my heart forever.❤️
You have to remember that when she recorded this she was only 16! To have that power and control and tone at that age comes along once in a generation.
Written in 1934 , Zing ! Went The Strings Of My Heart " was a Garland favorite while she was still a young vaudeville sensation . Her mother Ethel is said to have made her original arrangement , with its slow introductory passage and dramatic mid - song shift to a swinging up tempo finale . She sang this version on NBC's Shell Chateau radio program on the night of November 16 , 1935 , with her stricken father listening in on a hospital room radio . The following day he died of spinal meningitis . " I sang my heart out for him , " Garland later recalled , " but by morning he was gone . " The song remained in her repertoire the rest of her life . She sang it in her 1938 film Listen Darling and on numerous radio appearances . It would later become a perennial concert favorite .
I adore this song by Judy. I was very very surprised to find out the studio didnt think she was beautiful which she carried with her all her life. As a little girl growing up on musicals supplied by my wonderful mam I always thought she was absolutely lovely. People are so cruel!!!
Born in 2005 I was, but when I listen to this, I feel like I was born in the 30s, this makes me have an old feeling. I love her singing, I wish she hadn’t have died.
Always "glassy eyed" (uppers) WHAT THEY DID TO HER!!! Her mother first. Pills early, cigarettes early to curb appetite with a voice like that. AMAZING JUDY.
This kind of talent is disappearing from our world today -- not just in the entertainment world....but its simple beauty and its sheer bliss is fading from our society. Judy Garland captures this in this charming simple tune -- she was truly one of a kind
@@aclark903 If you did your research, you would know that MGM, the company that had her on contract and Louis B. Mayer, the boss of MGM, had Judy and Mickey Rooney on uppers to keep up with the high demands of working for MGM. She got her first pregnancy terminated, demanded by Louis B. Mayer because he wanted to hold her to a certain image. That haunted her for the remainder of her life. Judy’s mother treated her like a cash cow, never advocating for her when she was a minor. That combined with poor self esteem caused by the movie studio. Again, she didn’t have love from her family or the industry. MGM and her mom pushed the pills down her throat all for money. So take what you want with that dude.
I love how this song incorporates Grieg's "Morning Mood" into its melody. I always tell younger people that a lot of modern music is inspired by older compositions and it's a tradition going back centuries.

She was a national/world treasure. Her sweetness and passion we're pure, unpretentious and soulful. She was victimized and misused. God bless and rest her soul. May she be singing and flying freely always. True American excellence
Never could carry a tune, never knew where to start You came along when everything was wrong and put a song in my heart Dear when you smiled at me, I heard a melody It haunted me from the start Something inside of me started a symphony Zing! Went the strings of my heart 'Twas like a breath of spring, I heard a robin sing About a nest set apart All nature seemed to be in perfect harmony Zing! Went the strings of my heart Your eyes made skies seem blue again What else could I do again But keep repeating through and through "I love you, love you" I still recall the thrill, guess I always will I hope 'twill never depart Dear, with your lips to mine, a rhapsody divine Zing! Went the strings of my heart Dear when you smiled at me, I heard a melody It haunted me from the start Something inside of me started a symphony Zing! Went the strings of my heart 'Twas like a breath of spring, I heard a robin sing About a nest set apart All nature seemed to be in perfect harmony Zing! Went the strings of my heart Your eyes made skies seem blue again What else could I do again But keep repeating through and through "I love you, love you" I still recall the thrill, I guess I always will I hope 'twill never depart Dear, with your lips to mine, a rhapsody divine Zing! Oh, Oh, Oh went the strings of my heart
I first saw the 1938 MGM classic movie Listen, Darling! when I was in elementary school, I have loved it ever since! Iwas born in 1978. All three of the musical numbers are performed perfectly by the legendary, adorable, very pretty, very intelligent, and extremely talented Judy Garland Judy Garland first performed this beautiful and classic song in 1934! Judy Garland made this song her own!
Just beautiful every time she sang a note! The heartwarming emotion in her voice got to me as I heard her singing almost daily in our house. Nobody like her!Still missing you Judy!
Though this is the most tame version of this song. It still has all the emotional significance of the longer swing versions. She was an earthly angel and now she is a heavenly one. I am almost positive that Mary Astor's tears are real and not an act. It is kind of strange to me though that her demeanor towards Judy is so contrasted between her superior sweet, and motherly coddling nature in 'Listen, Darling' to her more headstrong, strict, and somewhat annoyed demeanor towards Judy in 'Meet Me In St. Louis', but I suppose this is possibly due to Judy's missed rehearsals, sneaking of the set, and not being on time for the shoots. Even still I love their chemistry together in both movies, and as for Mary's change in demeanor towards Judy, it works well in the latter film seeing how Judy is portraying a young woman in her late teens.
According David Shipman's biography, "Judy Garland: the secret life of an american legend", during the filming of "Meet me in St. Louis" Mary was upset with Judy because her behavior on the sets, she even spoke with her in implacable words saying that she seemed to forget that she was a vaudeville artist and calling her "child". But she loved Judy and she said on her autobiography that she fell sorry about her premature death.
The look on Charley Grapewin and Freddie Bartholomew faces at 1:44, lol! I saw the full film and really enjoyed it. Highly recommended! Thank you for posting one of the film's highlights!
This makes me want to cry, it makes me think of a girl I really love a lot, she made me smile, she still does, she’s depressed but everytime I make her smile and I see her face, Zing goes the strings in my heart, nothing makes me happier than thinking of her when I hear this song
Happy 100th birthday, Judy Garland! Thanks for sharing your gifts with the world & all your hard work. Rest easy now. You'll forever be the girl over the rainbow 💕🌈
when you learn about the talent from these days, you realize they were more advanced they could sing on spot, act on spot and dance all in one package... it seems artists today only do 1 thing and not the other
no her father died in 1935 this movie (listen, darling) came out in 1938 she sung this song in the radio in 1935 and her father was dying in the hospital while he listened on the radio but it wasn’t this performance
God she was so beautiful and I am jealous! But it is so sad how hellish her life was and that her life ended way too early. This song is just amazing. But my ultimate favorite song from her will always be Somewhere Over The Rainbow.
What amazing talent. Judy ...you brought so much light into world we are so lucky that you chose to share your wonderful gift with the rest of us. I'm also proud to share the same birthday as yours. God Bless you
She captured my heart as a young boy. Many of the comments here express exactly the effect her life has on us: incomparable beauty, passion, singing from her soul. I am so blessed to have been alive at the same she was.
The One & Only Judy Garland ..Sang this very song in her audition and very first meeting with MGM Louis B. Mayer....and went on to sing some of the most beloved & recognizable songs of the 20th century
